Using sea surface salinity(SSS)observation from the soil moisture active passive(SMAP)mission,we analyzed the spatial distribution and seasonal variation of SSS around Changjiang River(Yangtze River)Estuary for the period of September 2015 to August ***,we found that the SSS from SMAP is more accurate than soil moisture and ocean salinity(SMOS)mission observation when comparing with the in situ ***,the SSS signature of the Changjiang River freshwater was analyzed using SMAP data and the river discharge data from the Datong hydrological *** results show that the SSS around the Changjiang River Estuary is significantly lower than that of the open ocean,and shows significant seasonal *** minimum value of SSS appears in July and maximum SSS in *** root mean square difference of daily SSS between SMAP observation and in situ observation is around 3 in both summer and winter,which is much lower than the annual range of SSS *** summer,the diffusion direction of the Changjiang River freshwater depicted by SSS from SMAP is consistent with the path of freshwater from in situ observation,suggesting that SMAP observation may be used in coastal seas in monitoring the diffusion and advection of freshwater discharge.

This study investigates a purification process for metallurgical-grade silicon(MG-Si) in which Si is alloyed with tin(Sn) and Ca O–Si O_2–Ca Cl_2 slag is used to remove boron(B) impurity. Acid leaching was performed to remove the Sn phase after slag refining to recover high-purity Si from the Si–Sn alloy. The effect of refining time was investigated, and acceptable refining results were realized within 15 min. The effects of slag composition and Sn content on the removal of B were also studied. The results indicate that increasing Sn content favors B removal. With the increase of Sn to 50% of the alloy, the final B content decreased to 1.1 × 10^(-4) wt%, 93.9% removal efficiency.

Cry toxins produced by Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） are effective biological insecticides against certain insect species. However, there are potential risks of the evolved resistance of insects to Cry toxin owing to decreased binding of toxins to target sites in the brush border membranes of the larva midgut. The Cry toxins with different binding sites in the larval midgut have been considered to be a good combination to deploy in delaying resistance evolution. Bioassay results demonstrated that the toxicity of different Cry toxins ranked differently for each species. The toxicity ranking was CrylAc〉CrylAb〉Cry2Ab for Helicoverpa armigera, CrylB〉CrylC〉Cry2Ab for Spodoptera exigua, and Cry2Ab〉CrylB〉 CrylC for S. litura. Only Cry2Ab was toxic to Agrotis ipsilon. Binding experiments were performed with ^125I-CrylAb, ^125I-CrylAc, ^125I-CrylB, ^125I-CrylC, ^125I-Cry2Ab and the brush border membranes vesicles （BBMV） from H. armigera, S. exigua, S. litura and A. ipsilon. The binding of CrylAb and CrylAc was shown to be saturable by incubating with increasing concentrations of H. armigera BBMV （Kd=（45.00＋2.01） nmol L-1 and （12.80＋0.18） nmol L^-1, respectively; Bmax=（54.95±l.79） ng and （55.44±0.91） ng, separately）. The binding of CrylB was shown to be saturable by incubating with increasing concentrations ofS. exigua BBMV （Kd=（23.26±1.66） nmol L^-1; Bmax=（65.37±1.87） ng）. The binding of ^125I-Cry toxins was shown to be non-saturable by incubating with increasing concentrations of S. litura and A. ipsilon BBMV. In contrast, CrylB and CrylC showed some combination with the BBMV orS. litura, and a certain amount of Cry2Ab could bind to the BBMV ofA. ipsilon. These observations suggest that a future strategy could be devised for the focused combination of specific cry genes in transgenic crops to control target pests, widen the spectrum of insecticide effectiveness and postpone insect resistance evolution.

Low-Temperature Response to Major Agronomic Traits by Using Recombinant Inbred Line(RIL) Populations Derived from Towada × Kunmingxiaobaigu

Development of the recombinant inbred line populations （RILs） is important basis to detect QTLs for cold tolerance at booting stage in rice. A set of 230 RILs derived from the cross of Towada and Kunmingxiaobaigu were used for evaluation of low-temperature response on major agronomic traits of plant height （PH）, panicle length （PL）, panicle exsertion （PE）, spikelet fertility （SF）, specific spikelet fertility （SSF）, and spikelets per panicle （SPP） under natural low-temperature growing environments in yunnan Province, China. The results showed PH, PE, and SPP were mainly attributed by genotypes. PL was mainly influenced interactively by the genotypes × environments. SF and SSF were mainly controlled by the environments. Under the five different growth environments, F values of the six agronomic traits mentioned above ranged from 4.019 to 97.284. Significant difference was revealed between the lines. Under every environment, it indicated significantly positive correlation between SF and SSF, with correlation coefficients ranged from 0.826 to 0.885. It indicated significantly positive correlation between PH, PL, and PE. Under five different growing environments, variation coefficients of the six characters ordered in SSF （66.3%）〉 PE （57.4%）〉 SP （37.2%）〉 SPP （16.2%）〉 PH （9.6%）〉 PL （6.4%）. SSF, PE and SF were most sensitive to low temperature stress at booting stage, while SPP, PH and PL being least. The RILs of Towada/ Kunmingxiaobaigu can be used as a genetic population to investigate cold tolerance at booting stage. SSF, PE and SF are most sensitive to cold tolerance at booting stage in rice. So far the the variation of PH, PL, and SPP related to cold tolerance are not clear under natural low-temperature environment. More tested environments and years are required to identify and evaluate cold tolerance at booting stage in rice.

Chemical and optical properties of aerosols and their interrelationship in winter in the megacity Shanghai of China

A field campaign on air quality was carried out in Shanghai in winter of 2012. The concentrations of NO, NO2, NOx, SO2, CO, and PM2.5increased during haze formation. The average masses of SO4^2-, NO3^-and NH4^＋were 10.3, 11.7 and 6.7 μg/m^3 during the haze episodes, which exceeded the average（9.2, 7.9, and 3.4 μg/m3） of these components in the non-haze days. The mean values for the aerosol scattering coefficient（b sp）, aerosol absorption coefficient（b ap） and single scattering albedo（SSA） were 288.7, 27.7 and0.91 Mm-1, respectively. A bi-peak distribution was observed for the mass concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, and NOx. More sulfate was produced during daytime than that in the evening due to photochemical reactions. The mass concentration of NH4＋achieved a small peak at noontime. NO3-showed lower concentrations in the afternoon and higher concentrations in the early morning. There were obvious bi-peak diurnal patterns for b sp and b ap as well as SSA. b sp and b ap showed a positive correlation with PM2.5mass concentration.（NH4）2SO4, NH4NO3, organic mass, elemental carbon and coarse mass accounted for 21.7%, 19.3%, 31.0%, 9.3% and 12.3% of the total extinction coefficient during non-haze days, and 25.6%, 24.3%, 30.1%, 8.1% and 8.2% during hazy days. Organic matter was the largest contributor to light extinction. The contribution proportions of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate to light extinction were significantly higher during the hazy time than during the non-haze days.

Understanding the characteristics and influences of various factors on phosphorus(P)fractions is of significance for promoting the efficiency of soil *** on long-term experiments on black soil,fluvo-aquic soil,and loess soil,which belong to Phaeozems,Cambisols,and Anthrosols in the World Reference Base for Soil Resources(WRB),respectively,five fertilization practices were selected and divided into three groups:no P fertilizer(CK/NK),balanced fertilizer(NPK/NPKS),and manure plus mineral fertilizer(NPKM).Soil inorganic P(Pi)fractions and soil properties were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of the Pi fractions and the relationships between Pi fractions and various soil *** results showed that the proportion of Ca_(10)-P in the sum of total Pi fractions was the highest in the three soils,accounting for 33.5%in black soil,48.8%in fluvo-aquic soil,and 44.8%in loess ***-term fertilization practices resulted in periodic changes in soil Pi accumulation or *** black soil and fluvo-aquic soil,the Pi accumulation was higher in the late period(10–20 years)of fertilization than in the early period(0–10 years)under NPK/NPKS and NPKM,whereas the opposite result was found in loess *** Pi accumulation occurred in all Pi fractions in black soil;mainly in Ca_(8)-P,Fe-P,and Ca_(10)-P in fluvo-aquic soil;and in Ca_(2)-P,Ca_(8)-P,and O-P in loess *** CK/NK,the soil Pi was depleted mainly in the early period in each of the three *** addition to the labile Pi(Ca_(2)-P)and moderately labile Pi(Ca_(8)-P,Fe-P,Al-P),the Ca_(10)-P in black soil and fluvo-aquic soil and O-P in loess soil could also be used by *** analysis showed that soil properties explained more than 90%of the variation in the Pi fractions in each soil,and the explanatory percentages of soil organic matter(SOM)were 43.6%in black soil,74.6%in fluvo-aquic,and 38.2%in loess ***,decisions regarding the application of P fertilizer should consider
