A mesophilic-dry anaerobic digestion process is valid in treating high-concentration substrates containing low moisture content. It has merits of lower wastewater discharge and lower heat capacity required in maintaining reactor temperature as compared with a thermophilic-wet anaerobic digestion process. In fact, chaff can be easily obtained in farming areas and used as a mixture substrate as one of bulking agents for controlling moisture and supplying carbon. For this reason, this study applies the chaff to improve livestock manure, which contains high moisture content and is discharged from domestic pig farms. This study aims at verifying its feasibility for improving methane production efficiency on a basis of BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) assay obtained through a series of experiments. Finding results were methane gas production and gas production per volatile solid (VS) added, and methane gas production among biogas production were increased as the chaff added in the piggery manure was increased. According to experimental results for improving the methane production efficiency, mixture of the chaff and the piggery manure played an important role in controlling the moisture content and improving the methane gas production rate, and also verified its feasibility in the mesophilic-dry anaerobic digestion process indicating relatively less difficulty for operation and management.

Many skyscrapers have installed wind turbine systems to use new renewable energy. In particular, building an integrated wind power generation system by installing a wind power generator inside a building is an attractive method to secure safe energy. However, most studies have dealt with the efficiency of wind turbines and the response effects of wind induced vibration; space preparation for wind turbine installations has not been sufficiently considered. This work reviewed the shapes of openings where wind turbines can be installed in skyscrapers, and the characteristics of wind induced vibration responses occurring in the building with changes in cross sectional area. Nine wind power models were constructed to carry out the experiment. According to the experimental results, wind speed varies with shape of opening in the order of C-type>S-type>R-type. Moreover, wind speed increases as the area is reduced.

Most modern tall buildings using lighter construction materials are more flexible, which can lead to excessive wind-induced vibrations resulting in occupant discomfort and structural unsafety. It is necessary to predict and mitigate such wind-induced vibration at the preliminary design stage. Fluctuating across and along-wind loads acting on a tall building that could not be formulated theoretically were simulated numerically in the time domain using known across and along-wind load spectra. These simulated wind loads were used to estimate the across and along-wind responses of a tall building, which are less narrow-banded processes, based on the state space variable approach. The simulated across-wind response of root-mean-square value(0.0047) and that of KAREEM's(0.0040) and the simulated along-wind response of root-mean-square value(0.021) and that of SOLARI's(0.027) were compared. It is found that these are good approximations of closed form responses. Therefore, these numerically simulated across and along-wind loads can be used for across and along-wind responses estimation for the wind-resistant design of a tall building at the preliminary design stage.

Most of modern tall buildings using lighter construction materials with high strength and less stiffness are more flexible, which occurs excessive wind-induced vibration, resulting in occupant discomfort and structural unsafety. It is necessary to predict wind-induced vibration response and find out a method to mitigate such an excessive wind-induced vibration at the preliminary design stage. Recently, many studies have been conducted in using actuator control force based on the linear quadratic optimum control algorithm. It was accepted as a common knowledge that the performance of passive tuned mass damper(TMD) could increase by incorporating a feedback active control force in the design of TMD, which is called active tuned mass damper(ATMD). However, the fact that ATMD is superior to TMD to reduce wind-induced vibration of a tall building is still a question. The effectiveness of TMD for mitigating the along-wind vibration of a tall building was investigated. Optimum parameters of tuning frequency and damping ratio for TMD under a random load which has a white noise spectra were used. Fluctuating along-wind load acting on a tall building treated as a stationary Gaussian random process was simulated numerically using the along-wind load spectra. And using this simulated along-wind load, along-wind responses of a tall building with and without TMD were calculated and the effectiveness of TMD in mitigating the along-wind response of a tall building was found out.

Due to global climate change,Korea is facing severe droughts that affect the planting and early vegetative periods of upland *** and adzuki bean are important legume crops in Korea,so it is critical to understand their adaptations to water *** study investigated the changes in root morphological properties in soybean and adzuki bean and quantified the findings using fractal *** experiment was performed at the National Institute of Crop Science in Miryang,*** and adzuki beans were planted in test boxes and grown for 30 *** boxes were filled with bed soil with various soil moisture *** images were obtained and scanned every two days,and the root properties were characterized by root length,depth and surface area,number of roots,and fractal parameters(fractal dimension and lacunarity).Root depth,length and surface area and the number of roots increased in both crops as the soil moisture content *** fractal dimension and lacunarity values increased as the soil moisture content *** results indicated that the greater the soil moisture,the more heterogeneous the root *** analysis of the morphological properties and fractal parameters indicated that soybean and adzuki bean had different root structure *** soybean and adzuki bean were sensitive to the amount of soil moisture in the early vegetative *** required a soil moisture content greater than 70%of the field capacity to develop a full root structure,while adzuki bean required 100%of the field *** results would be useful in understanding the responses of soybean and adzuki bean to water stress and managing irrigation during cultivation.

We analyzed the effects of obesity on lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTSs） in Korean benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） patients. This is a multicenter, cross-sectional, prospective study conducted in four centers in Korea. A total of 602 men with LUTSs secondary to BPH were included. BPH/LUTSs cases were men aged ≥ 40 years with intemational prostate symptom scores （IPSS） ≥ 8 points. Height, weight and waist circumference were measured. Among the 602 patients, 156 patients had a waist circumference above 90 cm, representing central obesity, and 215 patients had a body mass index above 25 kg m2. Waist circumference was positively correlated with prostate volume （P = 0.034）. Men with waist circumference 〉 90 cm experienced a 1.36-fold increased risk of severe LUTSs （95% CI 0.82-2.41） compared with men with waist circumference ≤ 90 cm. Prostate volume was positively correlated with urgency and nocturia in men with central obesity. In this population of Korean men diagnosed with BPH, central obesity rather than overall obesity seems to be the more important predictor of LUTSs correlated with BPH.

OBJECTIVES: Venous infarctions after surgical resection of meningiomas were due to anatomical sacrifice of cortical vein. These venous infarctions resulted in swelling, hemorrhage, and neuronal death. So prevention of venous infarction is important for surgery of meningiomas. In this retrospective studies, we evaluated the factors associated with postoperative venous infarction. METHODS: Between 1993 and 2010, 802 patients with intracranial meningiomas underwent microsurgical resection between 1993 and 2010. Of these patients, 27 patients （3.4%） presented symptomatic neurological deterioration because of postoperative venous infarction. There were 5 male （18.5%） and 22 female （81.5%） patients. The mean age was 55.75 years （range, 33-81 years）. Mean maximum diameter was 4.89 mm （range, 1.5-8.0 mm）. The tumor locations were convexity （12 cases, 44.4%）, parasagittal （7 cases, 25.9%）, falx （4 cases, 14.8%）, sphenoid ridge （3 cases, 11.1%）, and trigon （1 cases, 3.7%）. The following factors associated with venous infarction were included in the statistical analysis: sex, age, location, edema, size, and resection. RESULTS: The incidence of venous infarction was 7.3% （22 of 303 cases） in large sized meningiomas （size ≥ 4 cm）. But in small sized ones （size ＜ 4 cm）, the incidence was 1.0% （5 of 499 cases, p ＜ 0.001）. Another factor related to venous infarction was perilesional edema. Meningiomas with perilesional edema were higher incidence of venous infarction than without ones （15/283 （5.3%） vs 12/512（2.3%）, p = 0.032）. We found no significant relationship between venous infarction and age, sex, location, extent of resection. CONCLUSION: It is important to make an effort to preserve main cortical vein during operation as much as possible, especially in meningiomas which were larger than 4 cm and combined with moderate to severe edema.

Melatonin plays a critical role in regulating photoperiodic signals and has recently been shown to decrease immunosenescence with age. In this study, we examined whether melatonin activates T lymphocytes as major adaptive immune cells in in vitro and in vivo models. Splenocytes, CD4＋, and naive CD4 T lymphocytes were isolated from the spleen of BALB/c mice and the cell population patterns and mRNA profiles associated with T cell activation （CD28 and p21） and the melatonin receptor （MT1A and MT1B） were assessed. The T cell activation- related proteins Ki67 and Bcl2 were also evaluated to confirm the relationship between gene and protein levels. Our data clearly revealed that CD28, p21, MT 1 A, and MT 1B mRNA were highly expressed in the presence of melatonin. Co-culture of CD4＋ T lymphocyte and peritoneal macrophage 7 days after melatonin administration to young and aged mice significantly increased APRIL mRNA, suggesting induction or maintenance of T lymphocyte responses. We also found that the intracellular amount of Ki67 and Bcl2 proteins were significantly upregulated in aged CD4＋ T lymphocytes, suggesting enhancing T cell proliferation and ling-term maintenance of memory T cells. Taken together, we conclude that melatonin supplementation may enhance immunity in aged individuals by upregulating immunosenescence indices in association with T lymphocytes and may be an attractive pharmacological candidate for aged and immunocompromised individuals.
