Expression of protein S100A4 is a predictor of recurrence in colorectal cancer

AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of S100A4 expression in colorectal cancer and its correlation with expression of E-cadherin and p53. METHODS: A cohort of archival formalin-fixed paraff inembedded specimens was selected from 127 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgical resection between April 2000 and March 2004 at the Department of Surgery, Korea University Guro Hospital. The expression of protein S100A4 was evaluated according to the proportion of positively stained cancer cells. In each case, three core biopsies with a diameter of 2 mm were punched out and positioned in a recipient paraff in array block. Four-μm sections of these tissue array blocks were used for immunohistochemical analysis of protein S100A4, E-cadherin, and p53. Clinicopathological data were based on the original histopathologic reports and clinical records of patients. RESULTS: In normal colorectal mucosa, protein S100A4 immunoreactivity was clearly absent in both cytoplasm and nucleus. However, positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 was detected in 45 (35.4%) of the tumor cases. There was no significant association between positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 and clinicopathological parameters such as tumor differentiation or TNM stage, and also no correlation between the reactivity and E-cadherin or p53 expression. However, positive immunoreactivity of protein S100A4 was found to be associated with tumor recurrence (P = 0.004), and was also associated with significantly worse overall survival in the Kaplan-Meyer survival analysis (P = 0.044). After adjustment for tumor differentiation, tumor depth and nodal status, however, it failed to achieve statistical significance (P = 0.067). CONCLUSION: The expression of protein S100A4 is associated with tumor recurrence and poor overall survival in patients with colorectal cancer.

Multiple malignant extragastrointestinal stromal tumors of the greater omentum and results of immunohistochemistry and mutation analysis:A case report

To report an extragastrointestinal stromal tumor （EGIST） that occurs outside the gastrointestinal tract and shows unique clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features. In our case, we experienced multiple soft tissue tumors that originate primarily in the greater omentum, and in immunohistochemical analysis, the tumors showed features that correspond to malignant EGIST. Two large omental masses measured 15 cm×10 cm and 5 cm×4 cm sized and several small ovoid fragments were attached to small intestine, mesentery and peritoneum. On histologic findings, the masses were separated from small bowel serosa and had high mitotic count （115/50 HPFs）. In the results of immunohistochemical stains, the tumor showed CDl17 （c-kit） positive reactivity and high Ki-67 labeling index. On mutation analysis, the c-kit gene mutation was found in the juxtamembrane domain （exon 11）and it was heterozygote. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor （PDGFR） gene mutation was also found in the juxtamemembrane （exon 12） and it was polymorphism. From above findings, we proposed that there may be several mutational pathways to malignant EGIST, so further investigations could be needed to approach this unfavorable disease entity.

＜正＞Twenty-one patients with primary high-grade advanced gastric cancer in whom the presence of stage ? was con- firmed by preoperative diagnostic imaging,were treated with a wide-spectrum regimen,designated as FEPMTX therapy to establish an effective salvage *** therapy consisted of 5-fluorouracil（5-FU）and the triple biochemical modulators;methotrexate（MTX）,calcium leucovorin（LV）,cisplatin（CDDP）,and in addition of epiru- bicin（EPI）.The schedule comprised 3 days continuous administration of 5-FU（350 mg/m2/day）and MTX（35 mg/ m2）on day 1,LV（30 mg/m2）on the day 2,LV（30 mg/m2）and CDDP（30 mg/m2）and EPI（20 mg/m2）on day *** treatment was performed two or more courses with 2 weeks interval in *** partial responses（PR）, five no changes（NC）and five progressive diseases（PD）were obtained,and the response rate was 52%.Ten patients （PR 7,NC 2,PD 1）were received gastrectomy（resectability rate 48%）.The survival in all cases resulted in median survival of 184 days and one-year survival rate of 23%.While there is no significant difference insurvival between the cases with or without the resection of the primary lesion,the survival of responders was significantly longer than that of non-responders（median survival time;responder 356days,non-responder 152days）.Adverse effects such as myelo- suppression and anorexia and fatigue sometimes occurred,but were mild and all the patients well *** therapy is thought to be an effective regimen for neoadjuvant chemotherapy with longer survival and little toxic for patients with stage?gastric cancer.

Direct and Indirect Applications of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma to Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides from Exhaust Gas

Dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） plasma was utilized to oxidize NO contained in the exhaust gas to NO2, ultimately improve the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides （NOx）. In the one case, DBD was created directly in the exhaust gas （direct application）, and in the an other case, ozone produced by DBD was injected into the exhaust gas （indirect application）. A comparative study between such direct and indirect applications of DBD plasma was made in terms of the NOx removal efficiency and the energy consumption. The NO2 content in the exhaust gas was changed by the voltage applied to the DBD device （for direct application） or by the amount of ozone added to the exhaust gas （for indirect application）. In both cases, NO was easily oxidized to NO2, and the change in NO2 content largely affected the NOx removal performance of the catalytic reactor placed downstream, where both NO and NO2 were reduced to N2 in the presence of ammonia as the reducing agent. The experiments were primarily concerned with the effect of reaction temperature on the catalytic NOx reduction at various NO2 contents. The direct and indirect applications of DBD were found to remarkably improve the catalytic NOx reduction, especially at low temperatures.

Behaviour of Trichloroethylene Decomposition in a Plasma-Catalytic Combined Process

A nonthermal plasma processing combined with Cr2O3/TiO2 catalyst was applied to the decomposition of trichloroethylene （TCE）. A dielectric barrier discharge reactor was used as the nonthermal plasma reactor. The effects of the reaction temperature and input power on the decomposition of TCE and the formation of byproducts including HCl, Cl2, CO, NO, NO2 and O3 were examined. With an identical input power, the increase in the reactor temperature lowered the decomposition of TCE. The presence of the catalyst downstream the plasma reactor not only enhanced the decomposition of TCE but also affected the distribution of byproducts significantly. However any synergetic effect as a result of the combination of the nonthermal plasma with the catalyst was not observed, i.e., the TCE decomposition ei^ciency in the plasma- catalyst combined system was almost similar to the sum of those obtained with each process. To improve the decomposition of TCE argon as a plasma-assisting gas was added to the feeding gas and a large enhancement in the TCE decomposition was achieved.

Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater by Using Positive Pulsed Corona Discharge to Water Surface

This study investigated the treatment of textile-dyeing wastewater by using an electrical discharge technique （positive pulsed corona discharge）. The high-voltage electrode was placed above the surface Of the wastewater while the ground electrode was submerged in the wastewater. The electrical discharge starting at the tip of the high voltage electrode propagated toward the surface of the wastewater, producing various oxidative radicals and ozone. Oxygen was used as the working gas instead of air to prevent nitrogen oxides from forming. The simulated wastewater was made up with amaranth, which is a kind of azo dye. The results obtained showed that the chromaticity of the wastewater was almost completely removed within an hour. The ultraviolet/visible spectra of the wastewater treated by the electrical discharge revealed that the total hydrocarbon level also decreased significantly.

Distributional Methods for a Class of Functional Equations and Their Stabilities

We consider a class of n-dimensional Pompeiu equations and that of Pexider equations and their Hyers Ulam stability problems in the spaces of Schwartz distributions. First, reducing the given distribution version of functional equations to differential equations we find their solutions. Secondly, using approximate identities we prove the Hyers Ulam stability of the equations.

Relationships between Pathological Patterns and Vocal Qualities Estimated by Acoustic Parameters

Objective： To examine whether vocal characteristics estimated by acoustic parameters were associated with phlegm, yin deficiency, or cold-heat patterns. Methods： A total of 75 college students （males：females = 53：22） aged 19-24 years were enrolled in this study. Each subject was asked to complete the phlegm pattern questionnaire （PPQ）, yin deficiency questionnaire （YDQ） and cold-heat questionnaire （CHQ）. For the acoustic analysis, each subject was asked to produce a sustained vowel sound （/a/） for 3 s to be used to calculate acoustic parameters. Then, habitual fundamental frequency （F0）, jitter, shimmer, F0 tremor, mean F0, standard deviation of F0, maximum F0, minimum F0, normalized noise energy, harmonic-to-noise ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, amplitude tremor, and power ratio were calculated using the Dr. Speech software. Finally, four hierarchical regression models with pattern questionnaire scores as dependent variables were formed to examine which factors among acoustic parameters, sex, and age were predictive of those pattern scores. Results： PPQ, YDQ, heat, and cold pattern scores all formed significant regression model equations and the adjusted R2 values were 0.281, 0.164, 0.156, and 0.170, respectively. There were aging effects in the PPQ and YDQ models （standardized β =0.199, 0.271, respectively）. Vocal tremor-related Fo tremor and vocal ringing-related power ratio parameters were associated with PPQ and YDQ scores. Gender was directly predictive of PPQ and indirectly moderated the relationship between power ratio and YDQ score. Vocal pitch- related habitual F0 and mean F0 were associated with heat and cold scores. These results indicate that the vocal qualities of phlegm- and yin deficiency-susceptible subjects tend to be ringing and less tremorous, and those of heat- and cold-susceptible subjects tend to be high-pitched. A major issue in radar quantitative precipitation estimation is the contamination of radar echoes by non-meteorological targets such as ground clutter,chaff,clear air echoes *** this study,a fuzzy logic algorithm for the identification of non-meteorological echoes is developed using optimized membership functions and weights for the dual-polarization radar located at Mount *** selected precipitation and non-meteorological events,the characteristics of the precipitation and non-meteorological echo are derived by the probability density functions of five fuzzy parameters as functions of reflectivity *** membership functions and weights are then determined by these density ***,the nonmeteorological echoes are identified by combining the membership functions and *** performance is qualitatively evaluated by long-term rain *** detection accuracy of the fuzzy logic algorithm is calculated using the probability of detection（POD）,false alarm rate（FAR）,and clutter–signal ratio（CSR）.In addition,the issues in using filtered dual-polarization data are alleviated.
