Microbial degradation of various types of dissolved organic matter in aquatic ecosystems and its influencing factors

Interactions between chemodiverse dissolved organic matter(DOM)and biodiverse microbes are governed by a myriad of intrinsic and extrinsic factors which are not well ***,we update and bridge the gap of this interdisciplinary theme *** an ecosystem level,aquatic ecosystems dominated by algae-sourced DOM(e.g.,eutrophic lake or coastal upwelling areas)harbor more biolabile DOM,such as directly assimilable monomers and readily hydrolysable ***,other ecosystems prevailed by DOM supply from soil and vascular plants(e.g.,river or wetland)have more biorefractory DOM,such as low molecular weight(LMW)residue of aliphatic C skeletons and geopolymers.A variety of heterotrophic bacteria,archaea,fungi,phagotrophic protists,and even photoautotrophic phytoplankton shows genomic and/or culturing experimental evidence of being able to process a diverse type of *** various biodegradable organics have different chemical structures and chemical bonds such as carbohydrates,amino acids,proteins,lignins,lipids,carboxylic acids,humic acids,hydrocarbons,and ***,bio-production of metabolism intermediates and/or biorefractory organics(e.g.,carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules,CRAM)is observed despite general decay of bulk dissolved organic carbon(DOC)during bioassay *** particular,emerging evidence shows that archaea contribute significantly to biomass in the marine mesopelagic zone and subsurface environments and their abundance often increases with depth in ***,not only intrinsic factors(e.g.,DOM composition and structure),but also extrinsic ones(e.g.,sunlight and dissolved oxygen)play important roles in interplays between DOM and microbes.

The goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the next 30-40 years is approaching worldwide consensus and requires coordinated efforts to combat the increasing threat of climate *** main sets of actions have been proposed to address this grand *** is to reduce anthropogenic CO2emissions to the atmosphere,and the other is to increase carbon sinks or negative emissions,i.e.,removing CO2from the *** we advocate eco-engineering approaches for ocean negative carbon emission(ONCE),aiming to enhance carbon sinks in the marine *** international program is being established to promote coordinated efforts in developing ONCE-relevant strategies and methodologies,taking into consideration ecological/biogeochemical processes and mechanisms related to different forms of carbon(inorganic/organic,biotic/abiotic,particulate/dissolved) for *** focus on marine ecosystem-based approaches and pay special attention to mechanisms that require transformative research,including those elucidating interactions between the biological pump(BP),the microbial carbon pump(MCP),and microbially induced carbonate precipitation(MICP).Eutrophic estuaries,hypoxic and anoxic waters,coral reef ecosystems,as well as aquaculture areas are particularly considered in the context of efforts to increase their capacity as carbon *** approaches are thus expected to be beneficial for both carbon sequestration and alleviation of environmental stresses.

Intraoperative glycemic control procedures and the use of an artificial pancreas

Strict intraoperative glycemic control can significantly decrease the incidence of postoperative infection; however, anesthesiologists must carefully control blood glucose levels as well as properly manage the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. However, standard blood glucose measurement systems and insulin dosing algorithms, which are necessary for achieving strict glycemic control, have not yet been developed. An artificial pancreas (STG-22TM; Nikkiso Co., Tokyo, Japan) is considered a highly accurate blood glucose monitoring system capable of closed-loop control of blood glucose. The device has, however, many problems to be addressed since it is a large and expensive system with little versatility, and it requires a large amount of blood to be collected. Therefore, the development of less invasive and inexpensive systems with future technological progress is greatly anticipated.

Study on the Rotor Design Method for a Small Propeller-Type Wind Turbine

Small propeller-type wind turbines have a low Reynolds number,limiting the number of usable airfoil ***,their design method is not sufBciently established,and their performance is often *** ultimate goal of this research is to establish high-performance design guidelines and design methods for small propeller-type wind *** that end,we designed two rotors:Rotor A,based on the rotor optimum design method from the blade element momentum theory,and Rotor B,in which the chord length of the tip is extended and the chord length distribution is *** examined performance characteristics and flow fields of the two rotors through wind tunnel experiments and numerical *** results revealed that the maximum output tip speed ratio of Rotor B shifted lower than that of Rotor A,but the maximum output coefficient increased by approximately 38.7%.Rotors A and B experienced a large-scale separation on the hub side,which extended to the mean in Rotor *** difference in separation had an impact on the significant decrease in Rotor A's output compared to the design value and the increase in Rotor B's output compared to Rotor A.

Kinetic roughening transition and missing regime transition of melt crystallized polybutene-1 tetragonal phase: growth kinetics analysis

The morphology and lateral growth rate of isotactic polybutene-1(it-PB1)have been investigated for crystallization from the melt over a wide range of crystallization temperatures from 50 to 110℃.The morphology of it-PB1 crystals is a rounded shape at crystallization temperatures lower than 85℃,while lamellarsingle crystals possess faceted morphology at higher crystallization *** kinetic roughening transi-tion occurs around 85℃.The nucleation and growth mechanism for crystallization does not work below 85℃,since the growth face is ***,the growth rate shows the supercooling dependence derived from the nucleation and growth *** nucleation theory seems still to work even for rough surface *** mechanisms for the crystal growth of this polymer are discussed.

Wide and Fast Wavelength-Swept Fiber Lasers Based on Dispersion Tuning and Their Application to Optical Coherence Tomography

We recently proposed a new class of wavelength-swept lasers for swept-source optical coherence tomography （SS-OCT）. It uses the same gain medium with the conventional swept lasers, but does not require any tunable filters. It is based on a principle called ＂dispersion tuning＂, in which a highly dispersive medium is inserted in the laser cavity, and loss/gain modulation is applied to mode-lock the laser. Since the cavity contains no mechanical components, such as tunable filters, we could achieve the very high sweep rate. In this review paper, we describe the principle of the dispersion-tuned swept lasers in detail and present our recent work on the application to the SS-OCT system.

Quality assessment of volunteered geographic information for outdoor activities:an analysis of OpenStreetMap data for names of peaks in Japan

Geographical studies of outdoor activities have increased in recent years with the rise in popularity of these activities worldwide,including in *** geographic information(VGI)is a key tool for organizing outdoor activities as it offers a means to determine the locational information and names of *** evaluate the quality of VGI,geospatial data generated by land survey agencies and other VGI are often utilized as reference ***,since these reference data may not be available,other methods are necessary to assure the quality of *** this study,we examined five trust indicators based on the inherent characteristics of VGI through an empirical case *** used mountain names extracted from OpenStreetMap in Japan as data because there were almost no other VGI in the *** a result,we isolated three trust indicators,namely versions,users,and tag corrections,to examine the thematic accuracy of VGI because these were the only statistically significant ***,we found that the prediction rate of thematic accuracy was very *** improve thematic accuracy,this study recommends using the most accurate versions,applying correctly given tags,and considering the motivations and characteristics of the VGI contributors.

The pitch of the spiral finned tube influences seriously to the acoustic resonance in the heat *** this research,the flow characteristics in relating to the aeolian tone from the finned cylinder are studied by the numerical *** is observed that the tonal noise generated from the finned tube at two pitch *** ratio of the fin pitch to the cylinder diameter is changed at 0.11 and *** tone level increases and the frequency decreases with the pitch *** separation flow from the cylinder generates the span-wise vortices,Karman vortices,and the separation flow from the fin generates the stream-wise *** the fin pitch ratio is small,the stream-wise vortices line up to span-wise and become weak *** the Karman vortices are remained and integrate in *** the Karman vortex became *** causes the low frequency and the large aeolian tone.

This paper introduces a knowledge construction model called the i-System for knowledge integration and creation and its relation to the new concept of the Creative Space. The five ontological elements of the i-System are Intelligence, Involvement, Imagination, Intervention, and Integration corresponding to five diverse dimensions of the Creative Space. The paper discusses the meanings and functions of these dimensions in knowledge integration and creation, and presents applications of the i-System to technology roadmapping and archiving.
