In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments of SWCNT （single-walled carbon nanotube） electrode in alkali halide aqueous electrolyte at several applied potentials were performed, and the change in the diffraction pattern of SWCNTs was observed. It was found that the position of the 100 diffraction peak does not change with applied potential while the peak intensity decreases with anion adsorption. It was concluded that the space inside the tube would be the important ion adsorption site for the well-gown SWCNT bundles.

Grooming is essential to build social relationships in primates. Its importance is universal among animals from different ranks; however, rank-related differences in feeding patterns can lead to conflicts between feeding and grooming in low-ranking animals. Unifying the effects of dominance rank on feeding and grooming behaviors contributes to revealing the importance of grooming. Here, I tested whether the grooming behavior of low-ranking females were similar to that of high-ranking females despite differences in their feeding patterns. I followed 9 Japanese macaques Macaca fuscata fuscata adult females from the Arashiyama group, and analyzed the feeding patterns and grooming behaviors of low- and high-ranking females. Low-ranking females fed on natural foods away from the provision- ing site, whereas high-ranking females obtained more provisioned food at the site. Due to these differences in feeding patterns, low-ranking females spent less time grooming than high-ranking females. However, both low- and high-ranking females performed grooming around the provisioning site, which was linked to the number of neighboring individuals for low-ranking females and feeding on provisioned foods at the site for high-ranking females. The similarity in grooming area led to a range and diversity of grooming partners that did not differ with rank. Thus, low-ranking females can obtain small amounts of provisioned foods and perform grooming with as many partners around the provi- sioning site as high-ranking females. These results highlight the efforts made by low-ranking females to perform grooming and suggest the importance of grooming behavior in group-living primates.

Deep learning with convolutional neural networks(CNNs)has achieved great success in the classification of various plant ***,a limited number of studies have elucidated the process of inference,leaving it as an untouchable black *** the CNN to extract the learned feature as an interpretable form not only ensures its reliability but also enables the validation of the model authenticity and the training dataset by human *** this study,a variety of neuron-wise and layer-wise visualization methods were applied using a CNN,trained with a publicly available plant disease image *** showed that neural networks can capture the colors and textures of lesions specific to respective diseases upon diagnosis,which resembles human *** several visualizationmethods were used as they are,others had to be optimized to target a specific layer that fully captures the features to generate consequential ***,by interpreting the generated attention maps,we identified several layers that were not contributing to inference and removed such layers inside the network,decreasing the number of parameters by 75%without affecting the classification *** results provide an impetus for the CNN black box users in the field of plant science to better understand the diagnosis process and lead to further efficient use of deep learning for plant disease diagnosis.

In this study, we introduced the temperaturedependent formation phases and crystallographic parameters of hot-pressed silver gallium telluride AgGaTe2 and copper gallium telluride CuGaTe2 with chalcopyrite structure from 300 to 800 K. These two compounds are potential thermoelectric materials in the intermediate temperature range; however, the temperature-dependent formation phases and crystallographic parameters of hotpressed samples have not yet been analyzed in detail. The crystal structure analysis based on synchrotron X-ray diffraction （SXRD） measurements clarifies that impurity phases such as Te and Ag2Te in the AgGaTe2 matrix and Te and CuTe in the CuGaTe2 matrix appear at some temperature regions above 300 K. The existence of such impurity phases could be correlated with the increases of the electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient of the samples after multiple measurement cycles of the temperature-dependent transport properties from 300 to 800 K. The tetragonal lattice parameters a and c, tetragonal lattice volume, thermal expansion coefficients, tetragonal distortion, anion displacement parameter, and isotropic displacement parameter of the hot-pressed AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2 were also analyzed. These crystallographic parameters are expected to substantially affect the thermoelectric properties of AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2. Our results provide prospect of the long-term high-temperature stability and clues of the detailed analysis on the transport properties of hot-pressed AgGaTe2 and CuGaTe2, which should aid their development for thermoelectric applications.

Coulometric determination of dissolved hydrogen with a multielectrolytic modified carbon felt electrode-based sensor

A multielectrolytic modified carbon electrode （MEMCE） was fabricated by the electrolytic-oxidation/reduction processes. First, the functional groups containing nitrogen atoms such as amino group were introduced by the electrode oxidation of carbon felt electrode in an ammonium carbamate aqueous solution, and next, this electrode was electroreduced in sulfuric acid. The redox waves between hydrogen ion and hydrogen molecule at highly positive potential range appeared in the cyclic voltammogram obtained by MEMCE. A coulometric cell using MEMCE with a catalytic activity of electrooxidation of hydrogen molecule was constructed and was used for the measurement of dissolved hydrogen. The typical current vs. time curve was obtained by the repetitive measurement of the dissolved hydrogen. These curves indicated that the measurement of dissolved hydrogen was finished completely in a very short time （ca. 10 sec）. A linear relationship was obtained between the electrical charge needed for the electrooxidation process of hydrogen molecule and dissolved hydrogen concentration. This indicates that the developed coulometric method can be used for the determination of the dissolved hydrogen concentration.

Clinical differentiation of acute appendicitis and right colonic diverticulitis: A case-control study

BACKGROUND Acute right colonic diverticulitis (ARCD) is an important differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) in Asian countries because of the unusually high prevalence of right colonic diverticula. Due to qualitative improvement and the high penetration rate of computed tomography (CT) scanning in Japan, differentiation of ARCD and AA mainly depends on this modality. But cost, limited availability, and concern for radiation exposure make CT scanning problematic. Differential findings of ARCD from AA are based on several small studies that used univariate comparisons from Korea and Taiwan. Previous studies on clinical and laboratory differences between AA and ARCD are limited. AIM To determine clinical differences between AA and ARCD for differentiation of these two diagnoses by creating a logistic regression model. METHODS We performed an exploratory single-center retrospective case-control study evaluating 369 Japanese patients (age ≥ 16 years), 236 (64.0%) with AA and 133 (36.0%) with ARCD, who were hospitalized between 2012 and 2016. Diagnoses were confirmed by CT images. We compared age, sex, onset-to-visit interval, epigastric/periumbilical pain, right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, medical history, body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, RLQ tenderness, peritoneal signs, leukocyte count, and levels of serum creatinine, serum C-reactive protein (CRP), and serum alanine aminotrans-ferase. Gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding was performed both in a microgravity environment and in a terrestrial environment,and the arc shapes in both environments were compared. A microgravity condition was obtained using the free fallsystem at the Japan Microgravity Center. The system can maintain a 10 s microgravity of less than 10-5 g. Awater-cooled Cu plate was used to simplify the arc phenomenon. The electric arc current was between 15 and 80 A,and the shielding and atmospheric gas was 99.9995% Ar and its flowing rate was 10 l/min. The polarity was a directcurrent electrode negative (DCEN). The arc gap was 3 mm and careful attention was also paid to the arc gap in boththe terrestrial and microgravity environments being the same. As a result, it was found that no effect of gravity onthe arc shape is observed under general welding conditions (over 60 A). When the electric arc current is lower than25 A, the arc shape is determined by the initial position of the arc root and is constant with time. Accordingly, itcan not be judged whether or not the arc shape is affected by gravity for this range. When the electric arc current isbetween 25 A and 60 A, it is estimated that the arc shape is not affected by gravity though it is occasionally affectedby other minor effects.

Improved performance of direct methanol fuel cells with the porous catalyst layer using highly-active nanofiber catalyst

PtRu supported on TiO2-embedded carbon nanofibers(PtRu/TECNF),which was recently reported as a highly-active catalyst for methanol oxidation,was applied to a direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC),and the power generation performance was compared to that using the commercial PtRu/*** the comparison,the effect of the catalyst loading on the power density of the DMFC was investigated using PtRu(18 wt%)/*** DMFC power density showed a maximum at about a 1.5 mg cm2 PtRu loading that corresponds to about an 80 mm layer thickness.A catalyst layer thicker than this value reduced the power density probably due to the concentration *** PtRu content in the PtRu/TECNF was then increased to 30 wt%or more to reduce the layer thickness and to increase the power *** DMFC performance was compared to that of different anode catalysts at a 1 mg cm2 PtRu *** power density was maximized using the PtRu30 wt%/TECNF,which showed a 173 mW cm2 at 353 K and had 66 mm layer thick,that was 26%higher than that of commercial PtRu/*** current–voltage curve of the DMFC with the PtRu/TECNF suggested an improved mass transport overvoltage,but a little improvement in the activation one despite using the catalyst with about a 2 times higher activity compared to that of the commercial PtRu/*** was attributed to the lower Pt utilization of the nanofiber catalyst layer.

New pyrometallurgical process of EAF dust treatment with CaO addition

The non-carbothermic zinc pyrometallurgical processing of electric arc furnace(EAF) dust was investigated on a laboratory scale. The main objective of this process was to convert highly stable zinc ferrite(Zn Fe2O4), which accounts for more than half of total zinc in the EAF dust, into Zn O and Ca2Fe2O5 by Ca O addition. The EAF dust was mixed with Ca O powder in various ratios, pressed into pellets, and heated in a muffle furnace in air at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1100°C for a predetermined holding time. All Zn Fe2O4 was transformed into Zn O and Ca2Fe2O5 at a minimum temperature of 900°C within 1 h when sufficient Ca O to achieve a Ca/Fe molar ratio of 1.1 was added. However, at higher temperatures, excess Ca O beyond the stoichiometric ratio was required because it was consumed by reactions leading to the formation of compounds other than Zn Fe2O4. The evaporation of halides and heavy metals in the EAF dust was also studied. These components could be preferentially volatilized into the gas phase at 1100°C when Ca O was added.
