Tracing sediment transport history using mineralogical fingerprinting in a river basin with dams utilizing sediment sluicing

Sediment causes a serious problem in relation to dam function. A cooperative sediment sluicing operation has been under way since 2017 to prevent sediment from accumulating in dams in the Mimi River,Miyazaki, Japan. To achieve a smooth and stable operation, it is very important to determine the sediment source and a sediment transport system to maintain the dam’s function. In the current study, the source and transport of sediment from the Mimi River basin have been analyzed with X-ray diffraction(XRD) to reveal the peaks of mineral species. The sediment samples were collected in the Mimi River basin from the Tsukabaru Dam to the sea in an area including 4 dams and 5 tributaries. In addition, the minerals in samples collected in 2014, before the start of the sediment sluicing operation, and from 2018 to 2020, after the start of the operation, were analyzed. An evaluation of the similarity of the sediment at each sampling point based on the X-ray diffraction peaks of mineral species showed that sediment distributed upstream was transported downstream in the year when the sediment sluicing was done.This result indicates that the sediment sluicing operation at dams ensured the continuity of the sediment distribution in the Mimi River basin. In addition, an investigation done in 2020 showed that sediment particles very similar to those of the upstream tributaries were deposited downstream because of extensive flooding caused by a large typhoon. The management of sediment transport has the greatest importance in a river basin where a dam is to be constructed. It is possible to trace the history of the sediment distribution and movement resulting from the operation of sediment sluicing by using sediment mineral analysis.

Relationship among Health Related Quality of Life, Quality of Sleep, and Oral Health Condition

Japan’s aging rate (ratio of elderly aged 65 and older to total population) has exceeded 20%. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationships between Health Related Quality of Life, Body Mass Index (BMI), and sleep quality. Subjects were 51 adults over 55 years old with chronic disease who living in the community. Instruments and structured interviews were used giving due consideration to privacy. Interviews were conducted within 10 - 20 minutes at the out-patient department. The evaluation instruments included bodymass index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL), and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). A significant positive correlation (ρ = 0.321, p < 0.05) between PSQI and QOL (OHIP-14) scores was confirmed with sleep quality being lower with lower QOL scores. A negative correlation (ρ = ?0.339, p < 0.05) between physical health component summary scores (PCS) and mental health component summary scores (MCS) of HRQOL was confirmed, demonstrating that PCS was low, and the level of MCS was high. Sleep quality was found lower among those with lower oral health-related QOL scores. Moreover, in subjects with lower MCS scores, the PCS scores were found to be higher. Accordingly, it was considered appropriate that dental treatment and care, support the maintenance of activities and sleep, and mental health promotion which are likely requisites critical for elderly persons’ maintenance of independent lifestyles in their familiar community.

Obstructive and secretory complications of diverting ileostomy

This review aimed to highlight the etiology,diagnosis,treatment,and prevention of obstructive and secretory complications associated with diverting ileostomy(DI).Obstructive complications at the stoma site are termed stoma outlet obstruction(SOO)or stoma-related obstruction(SRO).The incidence of SOO/SRO is 5.4%-27.3%,and the risk factors are multifactorial;however,the configuration of the stoma limb and the thickness of the rectus abdominis muscle(RAM)may be of particular concern.Trans-stomal tube decompression is initially attempted with a success rate of 33%-86%.A thick RAM may carry the risk of recurrence.Surgical refinement,including a wider incision of the anterior sheath and adequate stoma limb length,avoids tension and immobility and may decrease SOO/SRO.Secretory complications of DI are termed high output stoma(HOS).Persistent HOS lead to water and sodium depletion,and secondary hyperaldosteronism,resulting in electrolyte imbalances,such as hypomagnesemia.The incidence of HOS is 14%-24%,with an output of 1000-2000 mL/d lasting up to three days.Treatment of HOS is commenced after excluding postoperative complications or enteritis and includes fluid intake restriction,antimotility and antisecretory drug therapies,and magnesium supplementation.Intensive monitoring and surveillance programs have been successful in decreasing readmissions for dehydration.

Natural moisturizing factor(NMF)in the stratum corneum contributes to the retention of moisture there.The purpose of this study was to determine the penetration of ions in Shotokuseki extract(SE)into the three-dimensional cultured epidermis and the effect of NMF on the biosynthesis of amino acids and pyrrolidone carboxylic acid formation.Vari-ous ions,amino acids and pyrrolidone carboxylic acid were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrom-etry,fully automatic amino acid analyzer or high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)in three-dimensional cultured epidermis after application of SE.Gene expression levels of profilaggrin,calpain1,caspase14,and bleomycin hydrolase,which are involved in NMF production,were determined by reverse-transcription qPCR and bleomycin hydrolase activity was determined by aminopeptidase assay.The application of SE increased Na,K,Mg,Ca,Al,and Fe levels in three-dimensional cultured epidermis.The mRNA levels of the starting material of amino acid synthesis profilaggrin,and calpain1 and bleomycin hydrolase,which are involved in its fragmentation,increased.The activity of bleomycin hydrolase also increased.Furthermore,the levels of amino acids and pyrrolidone carboxylic acid increased in the three-dimensional cultured epidermis.This suggests that the ionic composition of SE may be involved in its moisturizing effect on the stratum corneum.

Although the number of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients is decreasing due to the development of hepatic anti-virus therapy,it remains a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide.The recent development of systemic or locoregional therapy for advanced or unresectable HCC has enabled advanced HCC to be downstaged,and reports of conversion therapy have increased;however,many clinical and scientific subjects rely on the therapeutic strategies of advanced HCC.There is a need to assess the evidence and develop clinical guidelines for conversion therapy for HCC;therefore,the Chinese Expert Consensus on Conversion Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma(2021 Edition),consisting of 16 statements,has been developed for clinical practice(1).This consensus addresses treatment strategies for both technically and oncologically unresectable HCCs.We applaud Chinese establishment of this comprehensive and cutting-edge consensus on the treatment of advanced HCC.

Oncologic impact of colonic stents for obstructive left-sided colon cancer

Colonic stenting has had a significant positive impact on the management of obstructive left-sided colon cancer(OLCC) in terms of both palliative treatment and bridge-to-surgery(BTS). Notably, many studies have convincingly demonstrated the effectiveness of stenting as a BTS, resulting in improvements in shortterm outcomes and quality of life, safety, and efficacy in subsequent curative surgery, and increased cost-effectiveness, whereas the safety of chemotherapy after stenting and the long-term outcomes of stenting as a BTS are controversial. Several studies have suggested an increased risk of perforation in patients receiving bevacizumab chemotherapy after colonic stenting. In addition, several pathological analyses have suggested a negative oncological impact of colonic stenting. In contrast, many recent studies have demonstrated that colonic stenting for OLCC does not negatively impact the safety of chemotherapy or long-term oncological outcomes. The updated version of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guidelines released in 2020 included colonic stenting as a BTS for OLCC as a recommended treatment. It should be noted that the experience of endoscopists is involved in determining technical and clinical success rates and possibly oncological outcomes. This review discusses the positive and negative impacts of colonic stenting on OLCC treatment, particularly in terms of oncology.

We examined the chemical constitution of the red alga Laurencia saitoi Perestenko,collected from Katsuura,Boso Peninsula,Chiba Prefecture,Japan.This specimen produced a new polyhalogenated acetogenin,named katsuural-lene(1),which structure was determined by the spectral methods,along with known diterpene,deoxyparguerol(2)and triterpene,thyrsiferol(3).In this paper we describe the structural elucidation of katsuurallene together with some biological activities.

Transfer of electrons on scratched iron surfaces:Photoelectron emission and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies

We report the activation energy, ΔEa, for the quantum yield in thermally assisted photoelectron emission(TAPE) under 210-nm-wavelength light irradiation, and the associated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) results. Samples were cleaned only in acetone and scratched in air, water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, benzene, and cyclohexane. Glow curves, describing the temperature dependence of photoelectron emission(PE) quantum yield(emitted electrons/photon), Y, were obtained. A simple method of determining ΔEa using Y, called YGC, at seven temperatures up to 353 °C, for the same Y glow curve, was proposed. The ΔEa obtained using this method was almost the same as that obtained from Y for seven stationary temperatures(YST). For scratched samples, the TAPE was measured over two cycles of temperature increase and subsequent decrease(Up1, Down1 and Up2, Down2 scans) in the 25–339 °C range, and ΔE_a was obtained from YGC. The Arrhenius plot was approximated by a straight line, although a convex swelling peak appeared in the Up1 scan. ΔE_(aUp1) was in the 0.212–0.035 eV range, depending on the environment in which scratching was performed; ΔE_(aUp1) for water was much higher than that for acetone. This was explained in terms of the mode of the acid–base interaction between the liquid molecules and the hydroxyl group of Fe–OH. The values of ΔE_(aDown1), ΔEa Up2, and ΔE_(aDown2) were in the 0.038–0.012 eV range. The total count of electrons emitted during the Up1 and Up2 scans was found to decrease with increasing ΔE_(aUp1) and ΔE_(aUp2), respectively. ΔE_(aUp2) was found to increase with increasing presence of the FeO component in the analyzed Fe oxides. The convex swelling peak was attributed to the removal of carbon materials from the scratched surface and the effect of the increased electron density of the surface hydroxyl group of FeOH under the light irradiation.
