E-cadherin and beta-catenin expression in Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric carcinoma and their prognostic significance

AIM： To examine the role of E-cadherin and betacatenin in carcinogenesis and to assess their prognostic implication in Epstein-Barr virus-associated gastric carcinomas （EBV-GCs）. METHODS： We compared the frequency of E-cadherin and beta-catenin expression in 59 EBV-GCs and 120 non-EBV-GCs, and examined the association between patients＇ prognosis and the expressions of these proteins. RESULTS： Neither the cellular-membranous nor the cytoplasmic E-cadherin expression showed any difference between EBV-GCs and non-EBV-GCs. On the other hand, loss of membranous expression of beta- catenin occurred more frequently in non-EBV-GCs than EBV-GCs [odds ratio = 0.41; 950 confidence interval （CI）, 0.19-0.90]. Furthermore, the nuclear and/or cytoplosmic expression of beta-catenin was seen more frequently in EBV-GCs than non-EBV-GCs （odds ratio = 2.23; 95% CI, 0.97-5.09）, and was observed in a larger proportion of carcinoma cells of EBV-GCs than non-EBV-GCs （P = 0.024）. Survival analysis for non-EBV-GC revealed that lymph node metastasis was significantly associated with poor prognosis （P 〈 0.001）. Among EBV- GCs, the depth of invasion （P = 0.005）, lymph node metastasis （P = 0.004） and an intestinal type by Lauren classification （hazard ratio = 9.47; 95% CI, 2.67-33.6） were significantly associated with poor prognosis. On the other hand, nuclear and/or cytoplasmic expression of beta-catenin was associated with a better prognosis in patients with EBV-GC （hazard ratio = 0.32; 95% CI, 0.11-0.93）. CONCLUSION： We observed more frequent preservation of beta-catenin in cell membrane and accumulation in nuclei and/or cytoplasm in EBV-GCs than in non-EBV- GCs. Factors involved in the prognosis of EBV-GCs and non-EBV-GCs are different in the two conditions.

AIM： To investigate features of Epstein-Barr virus （EBV）associated gastric carcinoma （EBVaGC） among a Mexican population. METHODS： Cases of primary gastric adenocarcinoma were retrieved from the files of the Departments of Pathology at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia and the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición in Mexico City. The anatomic site of the gastric neoplasia was identified, and carcinomas were histologically classified as intestinal and diffuse types and subclassified as proposed by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer. EBV-encoded small non-polyadenylated RNA-1 （EBER-1） in situ hybridization was conducted to determine the presence of EBV in neoplastic cells. RESULTS： We studied 330 consecutive, non-selected, primary gastric carcinomas. Among these, there were 173 male and 157 female patients （male/female ratio 1.1/1）. EBER-1 was detected in 24 （7.3%） cases （male/ female ratio： 1.2/1）. The mean age for the entire group was 58.1 years （range： 20-88 years）, whereas the mean age for patients harboring EBER-1-positive gastric carcinomas was 65.3 years （range： 50-84 years）. Age and histological type showed statistically significant differences, when EBER-1-positive and -negative gastric carcinomas were compared. EBER-1 was detected in hyperplastic- and dysplastic-gastric mucosa surrounding two EBER-1-negative carcinomas, respectively. CONCLUSION： Among Latin-American countries, Mexico has the lowest frequency of EBVaGC. Indeed, the Mexican population 〉50 years of age was selectively affected. Ethnic variations are responsible for the epidemiologic behavior of EBVaGC among the worldwide population.

The FLOWERING LOCUS T/TERMINAL FLOWER 1 Gene Family： Functional Evolution and Molecular Mechanisms

In plant development, the flowering transition and inflorescence architecture are modulated by two homol- ogous proteins, FLOWERING LOCUS T （FT） and TERMINAL FLOWER 1 （TFL1）. The florigen FT promotes the transition to reproductive development and flowering, while TFL1 represses this transition. Despite their importance to plant adaptation and crop improvement and their extensive study by the plant community, the molecular mechanisms controlling the opposing actions of FT and TFL1 have remained mysterious. Recent studies in multiple species have unveiled diverse roles of the FT/TFL 1 gene family in developmental processes other than flowering regulation. In addition, the striking evolution of FT homologs into flowering repressors has occurred independently in several species during the evolution of flowering plants. These reports indicate that the FT/TFL1 gene family is a major target of evolution in nature. Here, we comprehen- sively survey the conserved and diverse functions of the FTITFL1 gene family throughout the plant kingdom, summarize new findings regarding the unique evolution of FT in multiple species, and highlight recent work elucidating the molecular mechanisms of these proteins.

Comparison of percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization and unilateral portal vein ligation

AIM： To compare the effect of percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization （PTPE） and unilateral portal vein ligation （PVL） on hepatic hemodynamics and right hepatic lobe （RHL） atrophy.METHODS： Between March 2005 and March 2009, 13 cases were selected for PTPE （n = 9） and PVL （n = 4） in the RHL. The PTPE group included hilar bile duct carcinoma （n = 2）, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma （n = 2）, hepatocellular carcinoma （n = 2） and liver metastasis （n = 3）. The PVL group included hepatocellular carcinoma （n = 2） and liver metastasis （n = 2）. In addition, observation of postoperative hepatic hemodynamics obtained from computed tomography and Doppler ultrasonography was compared between the two groups.RESULTS： Mean ages in the two groups were 58.9 ± 2.9 years （PVL group） vs 69.7 ±3.2 years （PTPE group）, which was a significant difference （P = 0.0002）. Among the indicators of liver function, including serum albumin, serum bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, platelets and indocyanine green retention rate at 15 min, no significant differ- ences were observed between the two groups. Preop-erative RHL volumes in the PTPE and PVL groups were estimated to be 804.9 ±181.1 mL and 813.3 4±129.7 mL, respectively, with volume rates of 68.9% ± 2.8% and 69.2% ±4.2%, respectively. There were no significant differences in RHL volumes （P = 0.83） and RHL volume rates （P = 0.94）, respectively. At 1 mo after PTPE or PVL, postoperative RHL volumes in the PTPE and PVL groups were estimated to be 638.4±153.6 mL and 749.8 ± 121.9 mL, respectively, with no significant difference （P = 0.14）. Postoperative RHL volume rates in the PTPE and PVL groups were estimated to be 54.6% ± 4.2% and 63.7% ± 3.9%, respectively, which was a significant difference （P = 0.0056）. At 1 mo after the operation, the liver volume atrophy rate was 14.3% ± 2.3% in the PTPE group and 5.4%± 1.6% in the PVL group, which was a significant difference （P = 0.0061）.CONCLUSION： PTPE is a

Hepatectomy is an effective surgical treatment for multiple bilobar liver metastases from colon cancer;however,one of the primary obstacles to completing surgical resection for these cases is an insufficient volume of the future remnant liver,which may cause postoperative liver *** induce atrophy of the unilateral lobe and hypertrophy of the future remnant liver,procedures to occlude the portal vein have been conventionally used prior to major *** report a case of a 50-year-old woman in whom two-stage hepatectomy was performed in combination with intraoperative ligation of the portal vein and the bile duct of the right hepatic *** procedure was designed to promote the atrophic effect on the right hepatic lobe more effectively than the conventional technique,and to the best of our knowledge,it was used for the first time in the present *** successful induction of liver volume shift as well as the following procedure,the patient died of subsequent liver failure after developing recurrent *** discuss the first case in which simultaneous ligation of the portal vein and the biliary system was successfully applied as part of the first step of two-stage hepatectomy.

Natural products and food components with anti-Helicobacter pylori activities

The bacterial pathogen Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonizes in over half of the world’s population. H. pylori that establishes life-long infection in the stomach is definitely associated with gastro-duodenal diseases and a wide variety of non-gastrointestinal tract conditions such as immune thrombocytopenia. Triple therapy which consists of a proton pump inhibitor and combinations of two antibiotics (amoxicillin, clarithromycin or amoxicillin, metronidazol) is commonly used for H. pylori eradication. Recently, the occurrence of drug-resistant H. pylori and the adverse effect of antibiotics have severely weakened eradication therapy. Generally antibiotics induce the disturbance of human gastrointestinal microflora. Furthermore, there are inappropriate cases of triple therapy such as allergy to antibiotics, severe complications (liver and/or kidney dysfunction), the aged and people who reject the triple therapy. These prompt us to seek alterative agents instead of antibiotics and to develop more effective and safe therapy with these agents. The combination of these agents actually may result in lower a dose of antibiotics. There are many reports world-wide that non-antibiotic substances from natural products potentially have an anti-H. pylori agent. We briefly review the constituents derived from nature that fight against H. pylori in the literature with our studies.

Ambivalent Portrayals of Female Cyborgs in Oshii Mamoru＇s Ghost in the Shell and Innocence

What we witness is that Oshii＇s narrative and patriarchal technology creates the female cyborgs, who simply mirror male heterosexual desire and who are denied agency in their role. Oshii does not imagine any possibility that might destabilize his newly-imagined order, such as a cyborg that might upset heterosexuality. The absence of any female agency or desire in his cyber fantasy questions its subversive potential. Oshii seems to be immune to feminist theories on posthuman existence that conceptualizes subjectivity outside the gender polarities. Oshii describes a society where high technology only reinforces gender polarities. The representations of women＇s relationship to technology in Oshii＇s film, therefore, are quite problematic; the transgression of boundaries does not work out to reduce or annihilate domination by patriarchal needs and desires. Despite the fact that Oshii denies his female cyborgs a subject position other than that based exclusively in patriarchal fear and desire, his representations mark an ambivalence inherent in cyborg resistance, and feminist politics need to pay attention to such ambivalence.

Effects of General Anesthesia on the Results of Cardiac Catheterization in Pediatric Patients with Ventricular Septal Defect

Background:There is no gold standard sedation method for pediatric cardiac *** congenital heart diseases with intracardiac shunts,hemodynamic parameters are prone to change depending on the ventilation conditions and anesthetics,although few studies have examined these *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two different sedation methods on the hemodynamic ***:This study retrospectively evaluated consecutive patients with ventricular septal defect(VSD)below 1 year of age who underwent cardiac catheterization at Aichi Children’s Health and Medical Center,who were divided into age-and VSD diameter-matched general anesthesia(GA)and monitored anesthesia care(MAC)under the natural airway groups(n=40 each),for comparison of hemodynamic ***:In the GA group,arterial blood pH and arterial partial pressure of oxygen were significantly higher(p<0.01),whereas arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide was significantly lower than in the MAC group(p<0.01).Mean pulmonary artery pressure(p<0.05)and systemic blood pressure(p<0.01)were lower in the GA *** vascular resistance index(p<0.01)and systemic vascular resistance index(p<0.01)were also significantly lower in the GA group than the MAC *** were no significant differences in pulmonary blood flow index,systemic blood flow index,and pulmonary/systemic blood flow ratio between the two ***:Cardiac catheterization under GA in VSD patients results in different hemodynamic parameters compared to that under *** particular,when using pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance measured under GA for judgment regarding the surgical indications or perioperative management,consideration should be given to the fact that these parameters might be lower compared to those measured under MAC.

Literature Review of Nursing Education Promoting Professional Socialization among Nursing Students

The aim of this review was to clarify the elements that promote socialization of nursing professionals from the findings of previous studies, with keywords related to socialization among undergraduate nursing students, and obtain indicators for promoting professional socialization in nursing students in the current nursing education. The literature review was conducted using a qualitative analysis of the promotion of professional socialization among nursing students. The results were reported according to the reporting checklist of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. The authors conducted a literature search using electronic databases in July 2021, such as CINAHL (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (EBSCOhost) for English articles, and Ichushi for Japanese articles. Included studies were from 1985 to 2021. Previous studies were integrated to current studies. A total of 23 articles in English and 34 articles in Japanese were analyzed. The methods for promoting professional socialization in nursing students include self-learning, online media, extracurricular elements, and clinical practice. Socialization process differed for each school year;the first-year students tend to have ideological answers, while the fourth-year students tend to have practical answers as a result of education. The process needs supports from instructors and mentors. Nursing education promoting professional socialization in nursing students has developed diverse modeling, positive effects for improving social skills, and impact of self-efficacy and self-esteem and has fostered professional commitment and professional identity. However, loss of idealism of professional identity after graduation should be considered with supports from instructors and mentors. To establish nursing professional identity smoothly, nursing instructors supporting skills should be developed by understanding students’ stage of professional socialization.

FoxP3^(+)regulatory T cells(Tregs)play crucial roles in peripheral immune *** addition,Tregs that reside or accumulate in nonlymphoid tissues,called tissue Tregs,exhibit tissue-specific functions and contribute to the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and *** an experimental mouse model of crescentic glomerulonephritis induced by an anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody,Tregs started to accumulate in the kidney on day 10 of disease onset and remained at high levels(~30–35%of CD4^(+)T cells)during the late stage(days 21–90),which correlated with stable disease *** depletion on day 21 resulted in the relapse of renal dysfunction and an increase in Th1 cells,suggesting that Tregs are essential for disease control during the convalescence *** Tregs that accumulated in the kidney showed tissue Treg phenotypes,including high expression of GATA3,ST2(the IL33 receptor subunit),amphiregulin(Areg),and PPARγ.Although T-bet^(+) Tregs and RORγt^(+) Tregs were observed in the kidney,GATA3^(+) Tregs were predominant during the convalescence stage,and a PPARγagonist enhanced the accumulation of GATA3^(+) Tregs in the *** understand the function of specific genes in kidney Tregs,we developed a novel T cell transfer system to T cell-deficient *** experiment demonstrates that ST2,Areg,and CCR4 in Tregs play important roles in the accumulation of GATA3^(+) Tregs in the kidney and in the amelioration of renal *** data suggest that GATA3 is important for the recruitment of Tregs into the kidney,which is necessary for convalescence after renal tissue destruction.
