Liver stiffness and perfusion changes for hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome in rabbit model

BACKGROUND Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome(SOS)is caused by damage to hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells that results in fibrous obliteration of intrahepatic venules and necrosis of *** the diagnosis is primarily based on nonspecific clinical features and invasive liver ***,noninvasive imaging methods are required for the early diagnosis and severity assessment of hepatic *** To determine the effectiveness of supersonic shear wave imaging(SSI)and dual energy computed tomography(DECT)for diagnosing hepatic SOS using a rabbit *** Among nine New Zealand white rabbits(3-4 kg,male),three in control group ingested normal saline for 20 d and six in the SOS group ingested 6-thioguanine(5 mg/kg/d)for 20 *** stiffness was measured using SSI on days 0,3,10,and *** the same days,liver perfusion was evaluated from virtual monochromatic images of 55 keV and iodine map using *** changes in the liver were assessed using *** pathology scores were compared between the two *** stiffness and perfusion parameters were compared according to the groups,days,and pathology *** Final pathology scores were significantly higher in the SOS than the control group(median 22 vs 2,P=0.024).No gross morphologic changes were seen in *** stiffness,Hounsfield Unit values,and iodine concentrations were higher in the SOS compared to the control group on days 10 and 20(all,P≤0.007).Compared to day 0,liver stiffness and perfusion parameters were higher on day 20 in the SOS group(all,P≤0.001).Correlation coefficients for liver stiffness(r=0.635),Hounsfield Unit values(r=0.587),and iodine concentration(r=0.611)with final pathology scores were positive without significance(all,P>0.05).CONCLUSION Liver stiffness and perfusion parameters were significantly increased in the livers of a rabbit SOS *** and DECT might aid in early diagnosis of hepatic SOS.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease affects approximately one-third of the population worldwide, and its incidence continues to increase with the increasing prevalence of other metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. As non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can progress to liver cirrhosis, its treatment is attracting greater attention. The pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is closely associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, especially hypertriglyceridemia. Increased serum levels of free fatty acid and glucose can cause oxidative stress in the liver and peripheral tissue, leading to ectopic fat accumulation, especially in the liver. In this review, we summarize the mechanism underlying the progression of hepatic steatosis to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. We also discuss established drugs that are already being used to treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, in addition to newly discovered agents, with respect to their mechanisms of drug action, focusing mainly on hepatic insulin resistance. As well, we review clinical data that demonstrate the efficacy of these drugs, together with improvements in biochemical or histological parameters.

Effects of Initial and Boundary Conditions on Heavy Rainfall Simulation over the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula:Comparison of ECMWF and NCEP Analysis Data Effects and Verification with Dropsonde Observation

This study evaluated the simulation performance of mesoscale convective system(MCS)-induced precipitation,focusing on three selected cases that originated from the Yellow Sea and propagated toward the Korean *** evaluation was conducted for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)and National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP)analysis data,as well as the simulation result using them as initial and lateral boundary conditions for the Weather Research and Forecasting ***,temperature and humidity profiles from 3D dropsonde observations from the National Center for Meteorological Science of the Korea Meteorological Administration served as validation *** showed that the ECMWF analysis consistently had smaller errors compared to the NCEP analysis,which exhibited a cold and dry bias in the lower levels below 850 *** model,in terms of the precipitation simulations,particularly for high-intensity precipitation over the Yellow Sea,demonstrated higher accuracy when applying ECMWF analysis data as the initial *** advantage also positively influenced the simulation of rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula by reasonably inducing convective-favorable thermodynamic features(i.e.,warm and humid lower-level atmosphere)over the Yellow *** conclusion,this study provides specific information about two global analysis datasets and their impacts on MCS-induced heavy rainfall simulation by employing dropsonde observation ***,it suggests the need to enhance the initial field for MCS-induced heavy rainfall simulation and the applicability of assimilating dropsonde data for this purpose in the future.

Process control factors for continuous microbial perchlorate reduction in the presence of zero-valent iron

Process control parameters influencing microbial perchlorate reduction via a flow-through zero-valent iron （ZVI） column reactor were investigated in order to optimize perchlorate removal from water. Mixed perchlorate reducers were obtained from a wastewater treatment plant and inoculated into the reactor without further acclimation. Examined parameters included hydraulic residence time （HRT）, pH, nutrients requirement, and perchlorate reduction kinetics. The minimum HRT for the system was concluded to be 8 hr. The removal efficiency of 10 mg. L-1 influent perchlorate concentration was reduced by 20%-80% without control to the neutral pH （HRT = 8 hr）. Therefore pH was determined to be an important parameter for microbial perchlorate reduction. Furthermore, a viable alternative to pH buffer was discussed. The microbial perchlorate reduction followed the first order kinetics, with a rate constant （K） of 0.761 hr-1. The results from this study will contribute to the implementation of a safe, cost effective, and efficient system for perchlorate reduction to below regulated levels.

Effects of edible insect extracts on the antioxidant, physiochemical, and microbial properties of Tteokgalbi during refrigerated storage

In this study,Tteokgalbi,a meat product,was prepared with edible insect larvae extracts and its antioxidant,physiochemical,and microbial properties were evaluated during refrigerated *** prepared with 2%*** and 2%*** showed the highest radical-scavenging activity and metal-chelating activity,but the lowest thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS)value,among the treatments(P<0.05).In addition,those antioxidant activities were the lowest and the TBARS value was the highest in control Tteokgalbi(P<0.05)during all storage *** prepared with 2%*** showed the highest brownness index,pH,and cooking yield,but the lowest shear force value(P<0.05).During all storage days,the total aerobic bacteria level did not differ significantly among the *** conclusion,*** extracts(2%)were effective as antioxidants,inhibiting lipid oxidation,and improving the quality properties of Tteokgalbi,without negatively affecting microbial *** results confirmed that the edible insect extracts have industrial value as a food additive.

Kale Juice Improves Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors in Hypercholesterolemic Men

Objective To evaluate the effect of 3-month kale （Brassica oleracea acephala） juice supplementation on coronary artery disease risk factors among hypercholesterolemic men. Methods Thirty-two men with hypercholesterolemia （〉 200 mg/dL） were recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at university. The subjects consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period. Dietary and anthropometric assessments were performed and blood samples were collected to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation. Results Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% （P〈0.0001） and 52% （P〈0.0001）, respectively. The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% （P=0.0007） and 24.2% （P〈0.0001）, respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation. While there was no difference in the concentration of malondialdehyde, significant increase in glutathione peroxidase activity （P=0.0005） were accompanied by a significant increase in the serum selenium level （P=0.0132）. It was also found that the responses of these risk factors to kale juice administration were dependent on smoking status. Conclusion Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reduce the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia.

Aging is a multidimensional process that leads to an increased risk of developing severe diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and immunological diseases. Recently, small non-coding RNAs known as microRNAs （miRNAs） have been shown to regulate gene expression, which contributes to many physiological and pathophysiological processes in humans. Increasing evidence suggests that changes in miRNA expression profiles contribute to cellular senescence, aging and aging-related diseases. However, only a few miRNAs whose functions have been elucidated have been associated with aging and/or aging-related diseases. This article reviews the currently available findings regarding the roles of aging-related miRNAs, with a focus on cardiac and cardiovascular aging.
