Influence of external loading and halocline on phosphorus release from sediment in an artificial tidal lake

Electrochemical behavior of dental implant system before and after clinical use(in vivo and in vitro) was researched by using abutment and titanium *** simulate an oral environment,the samples of clinically used and non-used implant systems as a working electrode were exposed to artificial saliva at(36.5±1) ℃.Electrochemical tests were carried out using a *** electrochemical test,the corrosion morphology of each sample was investigated by FE-SEM and *** corrosion potential and pitting potential of clinically used implant system are lower than those of non-used implant system,and clinically used implant system exhibits a lower range of passivation,indicating a less degree of inherent resistance against chloride *** polarization resistance decreases in the case of clinically used implant system,whereas,Rp for clinically non-used implant system increases compared with clinically used implant system.

Spatial distribution and comparative evaluation of phosphorus release rate in benthic sediments of an estuary dam

A series of experiments and simulations were performed to ascertain the rate at which phosphorus is released using a water quality model in Saemangeum Lake, an artificially constructed lake located in an estuary. The general inflow of seawater once a day contributed to the formation of a halocline in the lake water, which caused variation in the vertical concentration of dissolved oxygen. The halocline was mainly observed in the deep downstream regions of Saemangeum Lake that are close to the open sea. In contrast, the shallower regions upstream, which are under the influence of pollutant-loading from upstream rivers, exhibited high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and Chl-a,resulting in lower water quality than the downstream regions. Laboratory experiments investigating the release of phosphorus at five representative locations showed that the upstream release flux, where the halocline was weaker, was higher than that downstream, where the initial level of phosphorus sedimentation was high. In particular, a need for an accurate evaluation method for the release of phosphorus at each site was suggested as slight differences were obtained depending on the estimation method used at each representative location. The results of the phosphorus release experiments led to the use of time-weighted integration(TWI), terminated time evaluation, and statistical mean value; the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code-National Institute of Environment Research model, a widely used water quality model for studying retention watersheds, was applied to the simulation of hydraulic and water quality characteristics for the Saemangeum Lake and its surrounding waters. The result of the water quality simulation indicated the highest reproducibility for release-time TWI so that TWI values were more useful in predicting phosphorus concentrations and the subsequent management of water quality.

The IFITM3 gene is classified as a member of the small interferonstimulated genes(ISGs)and plays a paramount role in defense against enveloped viruses,including influenza A viruses.1–6 Previous studies have reported that the rs12252 SNP,which is located in the open reading frame(ORF)of the IFITM3 gene,impacts the splicing procedure of protein production,which makes a truncated form of the IFITM3 protein and lowers its antiviral capacity.7–9 In addition,the rs34481144 SNP genotype affects the transcriptional regulation of the IFITM3 gene and IFITM3-neighboring genes and has a potent association with the clinical results of the H1N1 influenza 2009 pandemic in three human cohorts.10 Because several studies have reported that polymorphism of the IFITM3 gene is crucial in the host immune response,fine mapping of and extracting disease-associated SNPs from the human IFITM3 gene are important baseline studies necessary to understand how the IFITM3 protein functions in innate immunity.

TO THE EDITOR Prion diseases are fatal and in curable n eurodegenerative diseases caused by a pathogenic form of prion protein(PrP^(Sc))derived from a cellular form of prion protein(PrP^(C)).Recent studies have reported that aquaporin 4(AQP4)expression is dramatically upregulated in the brains of individuals with several different prion *** AQP4 is a key protein of the glymphatic system,which is the perivascular waste clearing system of the brain,and since altered expression of AQP4 has been observed in prion diseases,the glymphatic system may be associated with prion diseases.

Long-term clinical outcome between beta-blocker with ACEI or ARB in patients with NSTEMI who underwent PCI with drug-eluting stents

Background Because limited comparative data are available,we decided to compare 2-year major clinical outcomes between beta-blockers (BB) with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and BB with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) therapy in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES).Methods A total 11,288 NSTEMI patients who underwent PCI with DES were enrolled and they were divided into two groups,the BB with ACEI group (n = 7600) and the BB with ARB group (n = 3688).The major clinical endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) defined as all-cause death,recurrent myocardial infarction (re-MI),total revascularization [target lesion revascularization (TLR),target vessel revascularization (TVR),non-TVR] rate during the 2-year follow-up *** After propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis,two PSM groups (3317 pairs,n = 6634,C-statistic = 0.695) were *** the cumulative incidences of all-cause death,cardiac death,TLR,and non-TVR were similar between the two groups,MACE (HR = 0.832,95% CI: 0.704?0.982,P = 0.030),total revascularization rate (HR = 0.767,95% CI: 0.598?0.984,P = 0.037),and TVR rate (HR = 0.646,95% CI: 0.470?0.888,P = 0.007) were significantly lower in the BB with ACEI group after *** In this study,we suggest that the combination of BB with ACEI may be beneficial for reducing the cumulative incidences of MACE,total revascularization rate,and TVR rather than the BB with ARB after PCI with DES in NSTEMI patients.

The Climate Variabilities of Air Temperature Around the Korean Peninsula

In this study, changes in climatological conditions around the KoreanPeninsula are estimated quantitatively using various types of high order statistical analyses. Thetemperature data collected from Incheon station have been analyzed for the assessment of the climatevariation. According to our analysis, the climate changes observed over the Korean Peninsula forthe last century are similar to the global observational data in many respects. First of all, thewarming trend [+1.5℃ (100 yr)^(-1)] and the overall evolving pattern throughout the century axequite similar to each other. The temperature change in the Korean Peninsula is about two to threetimes larger than that of the global scale which may partially be ascribed to the influence ofurbanization at mid and high latitudes. In this work, a new Winter Monsoon Index (WMI) is suggestedbased on the European continental scale circulation index (EU1) pattern. Our WMI is defined as thenormalized sea level pressure (SLP) difference in the winter period between the centers of the EastSea and west of Lake Baikal in Siberia, the two eastern centers of the EU1 action patterns. A strongsimilarity is found between the time series of the WMI and surface air temperature at Incheon. TheWMI has decreased gradually since the 1920s but has shifted to a rapid increasing trend in the lasttwo decades; it was in fact accompanied by a weakening of the Siberian High and a decreasing of thenortherly during winter. Our findings of the close correlations between the surface air temperatureat Incheon and the WMI strongly indicate that our newly suggested index is unique and can be used asan efficient tool to predict climate variability in Korea.

The contribution of gender and age on early and late mortality following ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction： results from the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction National Registry with Registries

Background Although previous studies using Korean data have already reported higher rates of mortality in women, it is less clear whether these gender differences in prognosis post ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI）, are age dependent. The aim of this study is to examine the gender-age interaction with early and late mortality in patients with STEMI enrolled in the Korean nationwide regis-try. Methods This prospective study stratified outcomes according to gender and age from 17,021 STEMI patients. We compared in-hospital, early （30 days） and late （12 months） mortality between gender to examine the gender-age interaction in multivariable models. Results In younger women （〈 60 years）, in-hospital [5.8% vs. 2.5%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted odds ratios （OR）： 2.41, 95% confidence inter-vals （CI）： 1.59-3.66], early （6.2% vs. 2.6%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.4, 95% CI： 2.12-2.72） and late mortality （7.0% vs. 3.1%, P 〉 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.33, 95% CI： 2.08-2.61） were significantly higher compared with men. However, after adjustment for patient characteristics, Killip class ≥ 3, symptom to balloon time and major bleeding, and in-hospital bleeding, overall early and late mortality were no longer re-lated to gender in any age groups. Conclusions Among a Korean population with STEMI, higher early and late mortality in younger women may be explained by poor patient characteristics, higher Killip class ≥3, longer symptom to balloon time and more frequent major bleeding. Therefore, based on gender-age differences, more precise and aggressive preventive strategies focused on risk factor reduction, education and more intensive management for yotmger women should be performed.
