Molecular insight into electron transfer properties of extracellular polymeric substances of electroactive bacteria by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) extracted from electroactive bacteria show promising redox activity, but the electron transfer(ET) mechanism of the EPS has been rarely elucidated because of their structural complexity and lack of efficient methodologies. In this study, the charge transfer theory of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS) was applied to evaluate the redox properties of EPS adsorbed on Ni and Ag nanoparticles(NPs). These metal NPs were used to simultaneously magnify Raman signals and reduce/oxidize the redox moieties in EPS. As a result, the ET between EPS and metal NPs was evaluated through the changes in Raman signals. In this regard, we compared the redox activity of EPS extracted from two typical electroactive bacteria(Shewanella oneidensis and Geobacter sulfurreducens) and another two nonelectroactive strains(Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis). Electrochemical measurements show that the electroactive strains have higher redox capabilities than nonelectroactive strains. The SERS analysis shows that the porphyrin present in cytochrome c is the dominating redox moiety in the EPS of electroactive bacteria. The results of this study show that SERS with active metal substrates is a sensitive tool to probe the redox response of EPS, offering an opportunity to better understand the redox nature of biomolecules.

Shaking table test on a tunnel-group metro station in rock site under harmonic excitation

A tunnel-group metro station built in rock site is composed of a group of *** tunnels and their interconnections can show inconsistent responses during an *** study investigates the dynamic responses of such a metro station in a rock site,by shaking table *** lining structures of each tunnel and surrounding rock are modeled based on the similitude law;foam concrete and gypsum are used to model the ground-structure system,keeping relative stiffness consistent with that of the prototype.A series of harmonic waves are employed as excitations,input along the transverse and longitudinal direction of the shaking *** discrepant responses caused by the structural irregularities are revealed by measurement of acceleration and strain of the *** characteristics are identified by the transfer function method in white noise *** test results show that the acceleration response and strain response of the structure are controlled by the *** particular,the acceleration amplification effect at the opening section of the station hall is more significant than that at the standard section under transverse excitation;the amplification effect of the structural opening is insignificant under longitudinal excitation.

Topological pumping of edge states in the finite lattice with nontrivial topological phases provides a powerful means for robust excitation transfer,requiring extremely slow evolution to follow an adiabatic ***,we propose fast topological pumping via edge channels to generate large-scale Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger(GHZ)states in a topological superconducting circuit with a sped-up evolution *** scheme indicates a conceptual way of designing fast topological pumping related to the instantaneous energy spectrum characteristics rather than relying on the shortcuts to *** on fast topological pumping,large-scale GHZ states show greater robustness against on-site potential defects,the fluctuation of couplings and losses of the system in comparison with the conventional adiabatic topological *** experimentally feasible qutrit-resonator coupling strengths and moderate decay rates of qutrits and resonators,fast topological pumping drastically improves the scalability of GHZ states with a high *** work opens up prospects for the realization of large-scale GHZ states based on fast topological pumping in the superconducting quantum circuit system,which provides potential applications of topological matters in quantum information processing.

In the era of big data,there is an urgent need to establish data trading markets for effectively releasing the tremendous value of the drastically explosive *** security and data pricing,however,are still widely regarded as major challenges in this respect,which motivate this research on the novel multi-blockchain based framework for data trading markets and their associated pricing *** this context,data recording and trading are conducted separately within two separate blockchains:the data blockchain(DChain) and the value blockchain(VChain).This enables the establishment of two-layer data trading markets to manage initial data trading in the primary market and subsequent data resales in the secondary ***,pricing mechanisms are then proposed to protect these markets against strategic trading behaviors and balance the payoffs of both suppliers and ***,in regular data trading on VChain-S2D,two auction models are employed according to the demand scale,for dealing with users’ strategic *** incentive-compatible Vickrey-Clarke-Groves(VCG)model is deployed to the low-demand trading scenario,while the nearly incentive-compatible monopolistic price(MP) model is utilized for the high-demand trading *** temporary data trading on VChain-D2S,a reverse auction mechanism namely two-stage obscure selection(TSOS) is designed to regulate both suppliers’ quoting and users’ valuation ***,experiments are carried out to demonstrate the strength of this research in enhancing data security and trading efficiency.

Optimization study on neutron spectrum unfolding based on the least-squares method

The response functions and pulse height spectrum(PHS) of a 2''×2'' BC501A detector were obtained through a general-purpose Monte Carlo simulation toolkit,Geant4.A relatively simple but effective method was adopted to unfold the *** regarding the response matrix were proposed to optimize the unfolding *** results indicate that the accuracy of the unfolding can be greatly improved using many incident neutrons with a wide energy range,a proper energy interval,and an appropriate channel width of the response *** above-mentioned method was verified by unfolding three different types of simulated spectrum,the results of which are in good accord with the simulated distribution.

An alternative splice variant of human thioredoxin

An alternative splice variant of human thioredoxin (hTRX) has been identified by using reverse transcription_polymerase chain reaction, cloning and expressing of hTRX_encoding gene, and DNA sequencing. This variant contains hTRX exons 1, 2, 4 and 5. The entire protein encoding region of this variant, named hTRXδ3, is identical to hTRX except for the omission of exon 3. Human TRX and TRXδ3 cDNA has been expressed in \%***\%. The catalytic activity of rhTRXδ3 on DTT_dependent insulin reduction is lower than that of rhTRX, although hTRXδ3 still contains the active site.

Long-term results of clear lens extraction combined with piggyback intraocular lens implantation to correct high hyperopia

AIM:To assess the refractive outcome of clear lensectomy combined with piggyback intraocular lens implantation in highly hyperopic ***:This case review included 19 eyes of 10 patients with high hyperopia and axial length less than *** lens power was calculated for emmetropia using the Holladay II formula in 17 eyes,and SRK/T formula in 2 eyes following clear lens extraction and piggyback intraocular lens *** were examined periodically over 24 months for visual acuity and spherical equivalent(SE).RESULTS:The mean postoperative SE at 24 months was 0.20±1.39D(range,-3.00 to 2.50D),better than preoperative 9.81±2.62D(range,+6.00 to +14.50D)(P<0.001).Five eyes had SE within±0.5D of emmetropia and 11 eyes within±1.00D at postoperative 24 *** mean postoperative uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA) at 24 months was 0.60±0.36,significantly improved compared to preoperative 1.39±0.33(P<0.001).The mean best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) at 24 months was 0.49±0.35,not statistically different compared to preoperative 0.38±0.30(P=0.34).Twelve eyes maintained and 1 gained 1 or more Snellen line of BCVA,4 eyes lost 1 line,and 2 eyes lost 2 lines at 24 postoperative *** eyes best-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA) achieved J1 at postoperative 24 months compared to preoperative 7 eyes and the other 7 eyes better than ***:Clearlensextractioncombinedpiggyback intraocular lens implantation appears to be an effective procedure to correct high hyperopia but mild overcorrection and intralenticular opacification may require secondary procedure.
