Livelihood Factors and Household Strategies for an Unexpected Climate Event in Upland Northern Laos

Climate events pose major challenges to food production and the livelihoods of rural inhabitants in northern Laos, where upland rice using swidden production is an important crop. The onset of the rainy season in this area is one such climate event, and it has occurred earlier and with less regularity in recent years. Not all households are able to cope with these changes. This study examines the ability of local farmers to cope with rice insufficiency. This investigation also clarifies household strategies in dealing with the climate event. We randomly interviewed 63 of 95 household heads, and performed a paired sample t test to examine the significance of differences in three household groups between the 2010 normal climate and the 2011 climate event. The groups were categorized according to rice selfsufficiency in 2011: groups I are households with rice self-sufficiency, group II are those facing a rice shortage of up to 3 months, and group III are those with insufficient rice for over 3 months. We also conducted a one-way ANOVA to examine the significance of differences in livelihood strategies among the three groups. We found that the household labor force was the most important factor in enhancing the villagers' ability to deal with the climate event and that the level of impact of that event shaped their coping strategies. Households with substantial labor force had more options for coping strategies than those with smaller ones. The villagers faced different levels of impact and adopted differentcoping strategies accordingly. Non-timber forest product collection was the principle livelihood strategy in response to non-climate factors such as education, access to health services, provision of equipment and clothing, and overcoming the impact of the climate event. Novel Field Emission Organic Light Emitting Diodes with Dynode

Quantifying water quality and flow in multi-branched urban estuaries for a rainfall event with mass balance method

In this study,field observations were conducted after a heavy rainfall event in the Sumida and Shakujii rivers in Tokyo,*** flow dynamics and fluxes of salt,suspended sediment(SS),and dissolved oxygen(DO)were investigated with the mass balance *** fractions of fresh water and saltwater in seaward and landward flows were *** maximum salt flux in the Shakujii River was 53.8 kg/s during the flood tide,and those in the Sumida River were 680.3 kg/s at the upstream station and 703.7 kg/s at the downstream *** trends of SS and DO fluxes were similar in both *** the Shakujii River,the highest SS(3.1 kg/s)and DO(0.4 kg/s)fluxes appeared during the flood tide after *** the Sumida River,the maximum SS fluxes(6.1 and 6.3 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations,respectively)and DO fluxes(1.15 and 1.21 kg/s at the upstream and downstream stations,respectively)appeared during the ebb *** mass balance method was used to estimate discharge,salinity,SS concentration,and DO concentration at a station with missing *** results show that the estimated salinity and SS concentration had a significant correlation with the on-site observations,with correlation coefficients(R)of 0.950 and 0.835,respectively,but not for DO concentration(R?0.638).The disparity between the computed and measured data may be explained by the differences in velocity,salinity,topography,sedimentation,and the presence of organic *** analysis based on the advective salt transport components found a lower salt flux per unit width in the Shakujii River(0.36 kg/(m·s))in comparison with that in the Sumida River(2.88 kg/(m·s)).This indicates a higher probability for salt retention in the Shakujii River.©2020 Hohai *** and hosting by Elsevier *** is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://***/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).

Presence of columnar-lined esophagus is negatively associated with the presence of esophageal varices in Japanese alcoholic men

AIM To determine whether the presence of columnar-lined esophagus(CLE) is associated with the presence of esophageal varices(EVs) in male Japanese alcoholics. METHODS The subjects were 1614 Japanese alcohol-dependent men(≥ 40 years of age) who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopic screening. Digitalized records of high-quality endoscopic images that included the squamocolumnar junction and esophagogastric junction were retrospectively jointly reviewed by four expert endoscopists for the purpose of diagnosing CLE. The authors investigated whether and to what extent there were associations between the presence of CLE and the presence of EVs, especially in the group with liver cirrhosis(LC).RESULTS CLE ≥ 5 mm in length was found in 355 subjects(≥ 30 mm in 6 of them), LC without EVs in 152 subjects, LC with EVs in 174 subjects, and EVs without LC in 6 subjects. Advanced EVs, i.e., nodular, large or coiled forms, red color sign, or post-treatment, were found in 88 subjects. The incidence of CLE ≥ 5 mm decreased in the following order(P < 0.0001): 23.3% in the group without EVs, 17.4% in the group with small and straight EVs, and 5.7% in the group with advanced EVs. The multivariate ORs(95%CI) for EVs and advanced EVs in the group with LC were lower when CLE ≥ 5 mm was present [0.46(0.23-0.93) and 0.24(0.08-0.74), respectively, vs 0-4 mm CLE]. CONCLUSION The presence of CLE in male Japanese alcoholics was negatively associated with the presence of EVs.

Saturated hydraulic conductivity of compacted bentonite-sand mixtures before and after gas migration in artificial seawater

To understand the self-healing property of an engineered barrier for radioactive waste disposal,the hydraulic conductivity of compacted bentoniteesand mixtures saturated with artificial seawater(SW)before and after gas migration was ***-and Ca-bentonites were mixed with fine sand at a ratio of 70%bentonite in dry *** aspects were considered during the experiment:the hydraulic conductivity of the specimen that was resaturated after gas migration and the distribution of water content immediately after gas migration to study gas migration *** gas migrated through the entire cross-section of the specimen,and gas breakthrough occurred in the equilibrium swelling pressure range ***,the gas flow rate reached a sufficient large value when the gas pressure was approximately twice the equilibrium axial pressure(the sum of swelling and confining pressures),which excluded the back *** the gas migration pathway was not visible when the specimen was observed immediately after gas migration,the water content distribution showed that several parts of the specimen with lower water content were connected in the direction of gas *** resaturation,the change in permeability was within a limited rangedtwo to three times larger than that before gas migration for each type of bentonite in *** slight change suggests that gas migration creates a pore structure that cannot be sealed via crystalline swelling of montmorillonite in SW,even if highly compacted bentonite is used under a constant-volume condition.

White Organic Light-emitting Diodes with A Sr_2SiO_4:Eu^(3+) Color Conversion Layer

Abstract:Hybrid inorganic/organic white organic light emitting diodes(hybrid-WOLEDs)are fabricated by combi-ning the blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes(PHOLEDs)with red Sr2SiO4:Eu3+phosphor spin coatedas a color conversion layer(CCL)over the other side of glass substrate on the *** basic configuration of thePHOLEDs consists a host material,N,N'-dicarbazolyl-3,5-benzene(mCP)which doped with a blue phosphorescentiridium complexes iridium(Ⅲ)bis[(4,6-di-fluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N-C2'](FIrpic)to produce high efficient blueorganic light emitting *** hybrid-WOLED shows maximum luminous efficiency of 22.1 cd/A,maximumpower efficiency of 11.26 lm/W,external quantum efficiency of 10.2%and CIE coordinates of(0.32,0.34).Mo-reover,the output spectra and CIE coordinates of the hybrid-WOLED have a small shift in different driving currentdensity,which demonstrate good color stability.
