Background/Aim: Antarctic seaweeds are considered a promising source of compounds with anticancer activity. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most incident cancers with high mortality rates worldwide. This work aimed to characterize chemically extracts of the Antarctic macroalgae Iridaea cordata, Cystosphaera jacquinotii and Desmarestia anceps and to evaluate the cytotoxic effects against human colon cancer HCT 116 cell line. Materials and Methods: The extracts were obtained by depletion using an ultrasound probe and were identified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Results: Hexanic and chloroform extracts of the I. cordata and the hexanic, chloroform and methanolic extracts of D. anceps were able to inhibit growth of colorectal cancer cells in the three different incubation times (24, 48 and 72 h). Through GC analysis, 01 compounds were identified in the hexane extract and 02 compounds in the chloroform extract of the algae I. cordata. The hexane extract of D. anceps macroalgae presented 5 compounds, chloroform extract 10 and methanolic extract 3 respectively, with special highlight to fucosterol. Carotenoid analysis by HPLC identified β-carotene in all species, while zeaxanthin was present in the spectrum of I. cordata and C. jacquinotii. Fucoxanthin and violaxanthin were confirmed in the brown seaweeds C. jacquinotii and D. anceps. Conclusion: Extracts of macroalgae I. Cordata and D. anceps may be a source of therapeutic agents against CRC.

Background： Nutrition is one of the most important factors that affect animal performance, and it therefore also impacts on financial results in beef systems. In this way, finding the best strategy for feeding supplements is of paramount importance. Aiming to evaluate the effect of supplement feeding strategies for beef cows in the last third of gestation, two experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, 35 pregnant Nellore cows were assigned to a completely randomized design with four treatments： control, which received no supplement; supplementation for the last 30 d of gestation（30-d; 3.0 kg/d）; supplementation for the last 60 d of gestation（60-d; 1.5 kg/d）; or supplementation for the last 90 d of gestation（90-d; 1.0 kg/d）. All supplemented treatments received the same total amount of supplement throughout the experiment： 90 kg（20% of crude protein）. A second experiment（Experiment 2） was delineated to evaluate the effects of the amounts offered in Experiment 1 on intake and metabolism. Four multiparous pregnant Nellore cows were assigned to a 4 × 4 Latin square design, with periods of15 d ***： There was a linear effect of the number of days of supplementation on calving body weight（BW; P 〈 0.05）and a quadratic effect on BW change from parturition to d 31 post-calving（P 〈 0.05）, with cows on the 60-d strategy losing less BW post-calving. No difference was found in offspring birth BW（P 〉 0.10）. A significant linear effect on interval from parturition to conception（P 〈 0.05） was observed, with the highest calving to conception interval being observed in the 90-d strategy. The level of supplementation did not affect forage intake or neutral detergent fiber digestibility（P 〉 0.10）. Nitrogen excreted through urine tended to increase linearly with the level of supplementation（P 〈 0.10）.Conclusion： Providing 1.5 kg of supplement during the last 60 d of gestation improves cow performance after calving, reducing the magnitude of BW lost, and reduces the number of

We report the first genetic linkage map of the catfish Lophiosilurus alexandri,a South American threatened and promising aquaculture catfish *** the progeny of three full-sib families,with 141,74,and 49 offspring,respectively,we could genotype 2351 SNP markers using the ddRAD technology,shared by the male and the female maps *** averaged,female and male maps spanned a total length of 2201.3 cM,2481.9 cM,and 1872.8 cM,respectively,and comprehended the expected 27 linkage groups according to the karyotype information of the species(2n=54).The recombination rate was nearly twice higher in the female than in the male *** average map was used to estimate the historical effective population size(Ne)of the species from linkage disequilibrium between pairs of SNPs using parental individuals and revealed a remarkable drop in Ne about 20-25 generations in the *** construction of the biggest artificial reservoir in Latin America and associated nutrient retention is pointed as a possible reason for such a reduction and suggests a reevaluation of the conservation status of the *** current map lays the groundwork for understanding the genetic basis of economically important traits in breeding programs and will be useful for the genome assembly of this important commercial species.

Antiulcerogenic Effect of Brazilian Propolis Formulation in Mice

Propolis is a natural resin used around the world to treatment of several diseases. We evaluated the effect of Brazilian propolis (P1) in guinea pig isolated trachea in vitro contracted with hista-mine, in paw oedema induced by histamine in mice and anti-ulcerogenic effect of propolis formulation in mice. We used a P1 extract from South of Brazil to produce a formulation containing sodium bicarbonate and propolis dry extract (2%). In the guinea pig trachea Brazilian propolis extract (10 μg/mL) produced a non-significant inhibition in the cumulative response curve for histamine. However, the dose of 100 μg/mL shown had a significant inhibitory effect on the contraction induced by histamine (51% ± 5%). In the mouse paw oedema induced by intraplantar injection of histamine (50 μg/paw), the results showed that the treatment of the mice with P1 (10 or 100 mg/Kg (p.o) or 1 or 10 mg/Kg (i.p)), 0.5 h beforehand, significantly inhibited the paw oedema with maximal inhibition (MI) of 25% or 42% by p.o. route or 22% or 37% by i.p. route, respectively. Finally we have pre-treated mice with P1 formulation (20 mg/Kg or 40 mg/Kg, p.o, one time) or vehicle (powder) in animals submitted to diclofenac-induced ulcer, after 8 h P1 formulation inhibited of 43% or 83% of ulcers scores, respectively. Results showed that P1 formulation inhibited the ulcerogenic effect induced by diclofenac. Results suggested also, at least in part, the antiulcerogenic effect of formulation containing standardized extract of propolis can be due to the antagonistic action on the histaminergic system.

Byrsonima intermedia A Juss. is a species with pharmacological properties from the Brazilian Cerrado that shows difficulties related to sexual propagation. Research on cell viability may provide useful information for the selection of cells with embryogenic potential during the callus culture, Within this context, our research is aimed at establishing the cell viability of calli from Byrsonima intermedia leaf segments. The calli went through three subculture phases, of 60 days each, in MS medium with 0.09 M sucrose, 0.6% agar, pH 5.8 and 4.52 laM 2,4-D. The calli were stored in dark conditions and samples were collected every 10 days from each subculture for viability tests with fluorescein 3,6-diacetate （Fda） and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride （TTC）. The staining methods allowed quantifying cell viability in each subculture. The best results from the Fda tests were obtained at 21, 25 and 29 days for the first, second and third subcultures respectively, with 53,86%, 61.88% and 53.73% viable cells. Regarding the TTC test, the largest absorbance values were obtained at 21, 27 and 28 days for the first, second and third subcultures respectively. Fluorescence and spectrophotometry analyses were efficient for determination of cell viability during callus cultivation period.

The digital TV deployment brings to think a new paradigm for the vehicles of mass communication, by inserting mechanisms of interactivity. This means a new way to transmit content and connect the people of a nation and, thus, eventually shows up on various social aspects of a country. Brazil is undergoing a period of definitions and experimentations regarding the implementation of these mechanisms in the programs for digital TV. Therefore, many aspects (technicians and mainly socials) must be taken into account in this phase, because due to the interactivity, it is expected that there will be changes in education, industry, social inclusion, among other areas.

Post-fire Behavior of Ordinary Concrete Reinforced with Short Steel Fibers

Concrete is a widely used material in civil construction and may be submitted to high working temperatures under various circumstances. Many factors influence the behavior of this material at high temperatures, which usually leads to the evaporation of the hydrated cement. The dehydrated cement undergoes a contraction, simultaneously with the thermal expansion of the inert fraction of the material. As a consequence of these conflicting expansions and contractions, the material cracks and its strength and modulus of elasticity decrease significantly. On the other hand, the addition of short metallic fibers to the material increases its toughness, probably due to its action on the cracking behavior of the composite. It is thus expected that a concrete containing metallic fibers should maintain its original properties even after exposure to elevated temperatures. This paper presents an evaluation of the influence of steel fibers on the microstructure and toughness of concretes submitted to high tenaperatures. The bending behavior, under strain rate control, of concretes with a strength of 30 MPa and containing short steel fibers, submitted to a previous treatment at 500 ℃, was analyzed. It was observed that, after both heat treatments, the addition of metallic fibers to concrete was able to maintain the pseudo-ductility and load-carrying capacity of this composite material.

Rapid Differentiation of Closely Related Citrus Genotypes by Fluorescence Spectroscopy

The differentiation of closely related Citrus genotypes is a meticulous, laborious, and time-consuming task that involves the assessment of complex traits such as growth, tolerance to stress, photosynthetic efficiency, yield, and many others. Such a task is generally accomplished either by analyzing specific features of adult plants or by applying molecular markers to young trees. On one hand, only after plants start yielding can distinct genotypes be differentiated by comparing their fruit sizes, shapes, taste, and the number of seeds. On the other hand, molecular markers are expensive, and demand expertise and time for the analysis of a larger number of plants. For these reasons, the development of techniques that could assist in an early, quick and accurate differen-tiation of closely related Citrus varieties is of utmost importance. In this context, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) is a promising technique, since it is rapid, highly sensitive, and inexpensive. Previous studies showed that LIFS can differentiate a variety of sweet orange. However, this new study aimed to determine LIFS accuracy in the differentiation and grouping of very closely varieties of four Sunki mandarin selections: Comum, Florida, Tropical, and Maravilha. Furthermore we compared the results with ISSR and SSR molecular markers for the same varieties. LIFS technique distinguished the four selections with accuracy greater than 70%. Only with molecular markers was possible distinguishing clearly Tropical from Maravilha, but not Comum from Florida selections. In this way the results suggest that LIFS may be a sound tool for helping the identification of closely Citrus varieties.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in the Nursing Team of a Cardiology Hospital

Objective: Cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of morbidity and the leading cause of mortality in the world scenario, accounting for about 20% of all deaths in individuals over 30 years. It has attributed this to the increase in the company’s exposure to risk factors. It identifies cardiovascular risk factors in the nursing team and compares the cardiovascular risk by Framingham score among professionals of middle and upper working in a referral hospital in cardiology. Method: Cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in 2014, in a reference hospital in cardiology located in Recife/Pernambuco, Brazil. data of cardiologic risk factors were collected from 82 nursing team members, comprised of technical, auxiliary nurses, and nurses between 30 and 74 years of age. The cardiovascular risk level was evaluated by the Framingham Score. data were organized and analyzed by means of the SPSS, with descriptive statistics and Student-t test for the continuous variables. Results: Family history, stress and sedentary life style were the prevalent risk factors in more than half of the professionals. Only 5.23% of the technical and auxiliary nurses had a high risk score for cardiovascular event. Conclusion: The data indicates a low cardiovascular risk for these professionals and the presence of risk factors that can be modified. Health surveillance of these professionals is necessary in order to avoid a change to a risk of greater vulnerability.

Screening of Type 2 Diabetes in the City of Belo Horizonte: Differences between Genders

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem that carries a high social and economic burden. Its diagnosis is unknown in half of individuals who have the disease. The diagnosis of the risk factors should be done in the beginning, since changes in lifestyle and hyperglycemic correction may delay the appearance of the disease and its complications. In this context, screening has been considered an important tool for an early detection of diabetes in asymptomatic adults. Objective: The objective is to track diabetes in people from BH, comparing genders. Patients and methods: People were interviewed with questions concerning the risk factors associated with the development of diabetes. According to the risk factors present, they were classified as non-diabetic [ND], pre-diabetic [PD] or diabetic [DM]. Statistical analyses were performed considering p ≤ 0.05 as significant. Results: 1264 individuals participated (5.5% DM, 6.5% PD, 88.0% ND). When grouped, PD and DM males were more prevalent than PD and DM females. Those in the DM group had higher blood pressure, age, glycaemia, number of past smokers, first-degree relatives with diabetes than either PD or ND. Both males and females in DM and PD groups had a higher waist circumference than did either ND males or females. ND men had a higher intake of fried food and smoked more in the past than ND women. Both ND and PD males had higher blood pressure than women from the same groups. Conclusion: Screening for diabetes is very important for an early diagnosis and to avoid future complications in patients. It’s possible to infer that women are more conscientious when it comes to taking care of themselves than men.
