Clinical efficacy of 0.05%cyclosporine nano-emulsion in the treatment of dry eye syndrome associated with meibomian gland dysfunction

AIM:To evaluate the clinical efficacy of topical 0.05%cyclosporine nano-emulsion in the treatment of dry eye syndrome(DES)with meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).METHODS:This prospective study included 64 patients with DES and MGD who were randomly assigned to three groups:Group 1(n=24,conventional cyclosporine),Group 2(n=21,nano-emulsion cyclosporine),and Group 3(n=19,control).Lid margin telangiectasia(LMT),meibomian gland secretion(MGS),conjunctival injection(CI),corneal staining(CS),tear break-up time(TBUT),Schirmer test I(STI),Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI),and lipid layer thickness(LLT)was evaluated at 4,8,and 12wk of ***:In Group 3(control),LMT,CS,and CI improved after 8wk,MGS,TBUT after 12wk of *** Group 1(conventional cyclosporine),LMT,MGS,and TBUT improved significantly after 4wk,whereas CS,CI,STI,and LLT improved significantly after 8wk,and OSDI at *** Group 2(nano-cyclosporine),LMT,MGS,CS,CI,TBUT,and OSDI significantly improved after 4wk,and STI after ***,LLT was significantly higher than other groups after ***:Cyclosporine and nano-cyclosporine shows significant improvement in DES with MGD than the control *** contrast,the nano-cyclosporine group shows more statistically improved CI and CS at 4wk,especially LLT at 4,8,and 12wk compared to the conventional cyclosporine group.

AIM:To evaluate the pathogens in cultured jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to the postoperative periods and to obtain data for the prevention of infection of functional lacrimal stent ***:Totally 71 patients(81 eyes)who underwent the removal of jones tubes were enrolled in *** the removed jones tubes were cultured for bacterial and fungal identification and tested for bacterial antibiotic *** results were analyzed according to the duration of the inserted jones tube after lacrimal bypass ***:Of the 81 eyes,bacteria were isolated from 69 eyes(85.2%)and fungi from 6 eyes(7.4%).Among 69 eyes,40.6% showed Staphylococcus aureus(***),11.6% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***).Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more than Gramnegative bacteria,but Gram-negative bacteria showed a higher incidence in the jones tube implanted for over 10y(P=0.035).The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that 46.4% of *** were resistant to *** terms of antibiotics commonly used in ocular clinical practice,vancomycin was sensitive to *** and Streptococcus pneumoniae(***),amikacin responded to *** and Proteus mirabilis(***).Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMX)was all sensitive to ***,*** and *** except ***:*** is the most commonly found organism in the jones tube after lacrimal bypass surgery,and 46.4% of them are methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA),sensitive to ***,*** responded with amikacin is dominantly detected in the jones tubes implanted for more than 10y.

AIM: To evaluate the safety of using 0.03% trypan blue under air for anterior capsule staining in cataract ***: The current study involved a retrospective analysis of the medical records of 86 patients with vitreous hemorrhage, who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and cataract *** patients were classified into two *** trypan blue group(n=45) comprised patients who underwent anterior capsule staining with 0.03% trypan blue under an air *** control group(n=41) comprised of patients who underwent intracameral illuminator-assisted *** status of endothelial cell density(ECD) in both the groups was ***: The trypan blue group displayed significant decline in ECD at 1 mo(7.91% loss, P<0.001) and 3 mo(9.65% loss, P<0.001) after the surgery, whereas no significant changes were observed in the control ***, the number of patients who did not display a postoperative decline in ECD was significantly higher in the control group(43.9%;18 patients) than in the trypan blue group(17.1%;7 patients, P=0.004).CONCLUSION: Anterior capsule staining with trypan blue under the air bubble would not be as safe as the intracameral *** ECD loss might be attributed to the air bubble rather than to the deleterious effects of 0.03% trypan *** studies are required to clarify this.

Mg-Al hydrotalcites were synthesized using different preparation methods(a co-precipitation method, a urea method, and a simple one) to analyze their effect on the catalytic activity of these solid base catalysts. The method strongly affected the structure of their layers(e.g., the growth and stacking of the layers, and the type of intercalated anions) and, accordingly, their catalytic activity. The Mg-Al hydrotalcite prepared by co-precipitation showed the best catalytic performance in the isomerization of glucose into fructose, due to the small crystallite size and sand rose morphology enhancing the exposure of surface active sites to reactants.

Herein,the relationship between the structure and base properties of Mg–Al hydrotalcite catalysts was comprehensively investigated in relation to heat treatment and rehydration processes,which are well known as memory effects of *** structure of Mg–Al hydrotalcites changed from layered double hydroxide(LDH)to mixed metal oxide and subsequently to a spinel structure during heat treatment,and it was returned from mixed metal oxide to a LDH structure by *** on various characterizations,we successfully proposed a detailed mechanism of memory *** also confirmed that the Mg–Al hydrotalcites had weak or strong base sites and that their base properties could be systematically tuned by heat treatment and *** prepared Mg–Al hydrotalcites were applied to a model reaction,isomerization of glucose to fructose,as base *** the catalysts tested,the rehydrated Mg–Al hydrotalcite efficiently produced fructose due to its appropriate base and structure *** finally concluded that the base sites of Mg–Al hydrotalcites can be designed as desired by heat treatment and ***,through systematic design of the base sites of Mg–Al hydrotalcites,these can be promising catalysts for various heterogeneous reactions over base catalysts,giving excellent catalytic performances.

Background:The rapid antibiotics treatment targeted to a specific pathogen can improve clinical outcomes of *** aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of biliary septicemia caused by cholangitis or cholecystitis according to causative ***:We performed a retrospective cohort study in 151 patients diagnosed with cholangitis or cholecystitis with bacterial septicemia from January 2013 to December *** patients showed clinical evidence of biliary tract infection and had blood isolates that demonstrated ***:Gram-negative,gram-positive,and both types of bacteria caused 84.1%(127/151),13.2%(20/151),and 2.6%(4/151)episodes of septicemia,*** most common infecting organisms were Escherichia coli among gram-negative bacteria and Enterococcus species(Enterococcus casseliflavus and Enterococcus faecalis)among gram-positive *** were no differences in mortality,re-admission rate,and need for emergency decompression procedures between the gram-positive and gram-negative septicemia *** univariate analysis,previous gastrectomy history was associated with gram-positive *** analysis also showed that previous gastrectomy history was strongly associated with gram-positive septicemia(Odds ratio=5.47,95%CI:1.19–25.23;P=0.029).Conclusions:Previous gastrectomy history was related to biliary septicemia induced by gram-positive *** information would aid the choice of empirical antibiotics.

AIM: To compare the mid-term outcomes of lapa-roscopic sleeve gastrectomy(LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass(LRYGB) in obese Korean patients. METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent either LSG or LRYGB with primary to treat morbid obesity between January 2011 and December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with a body mass index(BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 with inadequately controlled obesity-related comorbidities(e.g., diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, or obesityrelated arthropathy) or BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 were considered for bariatric surgery according to the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity-Asia Pacific Chapter Consensus statements in 2011. The decision regarding the procedure type was made on an individual basis following extensive discussion with the patient about the specific risks associated with each procedure. All operative procedures were performed laparoscopically by a single surgeon experienced in upper gastrointestinal surgeries. Baseline demographics, perioperative surgical outcomes, and postoperative anthropometric data from a prospectively established database were thoroughly reviewed and compared between the two surgical ***: One hundred four patients underwent LSG, and 236 underwent LRYGB. Preoperative BMI in the LSG group was significantly higher than that of the LRYGB group(38.6 kg/m2 vs 37.2 kg/m2, P = 0.024). Patients with diabetes were more prevalent in the LRYGB group(18.3% vs 35.6%, P = 0.001). Operating time and hospital stay were significantly shorter in the LSG group compared with the LRYGB group(100 min vs 130 min, P < 0.001; 1 d vs 2 d, P = 0.003), but the incidence of perioperative complications was similar between the groups(P = 0.351). The mean percentage of excess weight loss(%EWL) was 71.2% for LRYGB, while it was 63.5% for LSG, at mean follow-up periods of 18.0 and 21.0 mo, respectively(P = 0.073). This study investigates the effect of{10-12}deformation twins on the continuous precipitation behavior of an extruded Mg-8.0Al-0.5Zn-0.2Mn(AZ80)alloy during *** extruded AZ80 alloy is compressed along the transverse direction to introduce{10-12}twins,followed by an aging treatment at 300℃.The extruded material exhibits a twin-free microstructure with low internal strain energy,whereas the pre-twinned material possesses abundant{10-12}twins and has high internal strain *** aging results reveal that the peak-aging time of the pre-twinned material(1 h)is one-eighth of that of the extruded material(8 h).Although Mg_(17)Al_(12)continuous precipitates(CPs)are observed in both the peak-aged materials,these CPs are much smaller and more densely distributed in the pre-twinned material despite the significantly shorter aging *** CPs size in the peak-aged materials increases in the following order:twinned region in the pre-twinned material(0.47μm)

An ultrathin SrTiO3 dielectric layer is optimized through Al doping to solve the problems existing in development of ultra-high-k oxide MOS *** post-deposition annealing,Al doping induces changes in the electronic structure of SrTiO3,thereby effectively reducing leakage current to 80) of ultrathin SrTMO3 MOS *** titanate(SrTiO3) is a high-k material but its bandgap is smaller than that of other oxide dielectrics(e.g.,SiO2,Al2 O3).Consequently,an ultrathin SrTiO3 film may have a high tunneling leakage current,which is not suitable for capacitor-based *** improve the performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor(MOS) capacitors using SrTiO3,an approach based on homogenous and uniform aluminum doping to SrTiO3 through co-sputtering is *** bandgap of a pristine SrTiO3 film showed an increase of 0.5 eV after Al ***,Al doping decreased the leakage current of SrTiO3/Si-based MOS capacitors by more than five orders of magnitude(at the level of nanoampere per square centimeter).Importantly,a dielectric constant of 81.3 and equivalent oxide thickness less than 5 A were achieved in an 8-nm-thick Al-doped SrTiO3 film owing to changes in its crystal structure and conduction band edge electronic ***,the obtained data show the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving the problems existing in the development of ultra-high-k oxide MOS capacitors.
