Pancreatic cancer, a highly lethal cancer, has the lowest 5-year survival rate forseveral reasons, including its tendency for the late diagnosis, a lack of serologicmarkers for screening, aggressive local invasion, its early metastaticdissemination, and its resistance to chemotherapy/radiotherapy. Pancreaticcancer evades immunologic elimination by a variety of mechanisms, includinginduction of an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Cancer-associatedfibroblasts interact with inhibitory immune cells, such as tumor-associatedmacrophages and regulatory T cells, to form an inflammatory shell-like desmoplasticstroma around tumor cells. Immunotherapy has the potential to mobilizethe immune system to eliminate cancer cells. Nevertheless, althoughimmunotherapy has shown brilliant results across a wide range of malignancies,only anti-programmed cell death 1 antibodies have been approved for use inpatients with pancreatic cancer who test positive for microsatellite instability ormismatch repair deficiency. Some patients treated with immunotherapy whoshow progression based on conventional response criteria may prove to have adurable response later. Continuation of immune-based treatment beyond diseaseprogression can be chosen if the patient is clinically stable. Immunotherapeuticapproaches for pancreatic cancer treatment deserve further exploration, given theplethora of combination trials with other immunotherapeutic agents, targetedtherapy, stroma-modulating agents, chemotherapy, and multi-way combinationtherapies.

Risk factors for tuberculosis after gastrectomy in gastric cancer

AIM: To examine incidence of tuberculosis(TB) in gastrectomy patients and investigate the risk factors for developing TB after gastrectomy in patients with gastric ***: A retrospective cohort study of gastrectomy patients with gastric cancer was performed at a university-affiliated hospital in Seoul, South Korea between January 2007 and December 2009. We reviewed patient medical records and collected data associated with the risk of TB, surgery, and gastric cancer. Standardized incidence ratios(SIRs) of TB were calculated to compare the incidence of TB in gastrectomy patients with that in the general Korean population, and risk factors for TB after gastrectomies were ***: Among the 1776 gastrectomy patients, 0.9%(16/1776) developed post-gastrectomy TB, with an incidence of 223.7 cases per 100000 patients per year. The overall incidence of TB in gastrectomy patients, adjusted by sex and age, was significantly higher thanthat in the general population(SIR = 2.22, 95%CI: 1.27-3.60). Previous TB infection [odds ratio(OR) = 7.1, P < 0.001], lower body mass index(BMI)(kg/m2; OR = 1.21, P = 0.043) and gastrectomy extent(total gastrectomy vs subtotal gastrectomy)(OR = 3.48, P = 0.017) were significant risk factors for TB after gastrectomy in a multivariate ***: TB incidence after gastrectomy is higher than that in the general population. Previous TB infection, lower BMI, and total gastrectomy are risk factors for TB after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer.

Perfluoropentane-based oxygen-loaded nanodroplets reduce microglial activation through metabolic reprogramming

Microglia,the primary immune cells within the brain,have gained recognition as a promising therapeutic target for managing neurodegenerative diseases within the central nervous system,including Parkinson’s *** perfluorocarbon droplets have been reported to not only possess a high oxygen-carrying capacity,but also exhibit remarkable anti-inflammatory ***,the role of perfluoropentane in microglia-mediated central inflammatory reactions remains poorly *** this study,we developed perfluoropentane-based oxygen-loaded nanodroplets(PFP-OLNDs)and found that pretreatment with these droplets suppressed the lipopolysaccharide-induced activation of M1-type microglia in vitro and in vivo,and suppressed microglial activation in a mouse model of Parkinson’s *** suppression led to a reduction in the inflammatory response,oxidative stress,and cell migration capacity in ***,the neurotoxic effects were mitigated,which alleviated neuronal ***,ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry showed that the anti-inflammatory effects of PFP-OLNDs mainly resulted from the modulation of microglial metabolic *** further showed that PFP-OLNDs regulated microglial metabolic reprogramming through the AKT-mTOR-HIF-1α***,our findings suggest that the novel PFP-OLNDs constructed in this study alleviate microglia-mediated central inflammatory reactions through metabolic reprogramming.

Photothermal catalytic CO2hydrogenation is an effective means of utilizing carbon ***,it is severely limited in terms of kinetics and ***,it is necessary to meticulously design catalysts to solve this ***,a sandwich structured NiO@InNi/In2O3is designed to intrinsically regulate the direction of photogenerated carriers transfer,resulting in a CO yield of 42.97 mmol g-1h-1(1290.3μmol h-1) with a selectivity near to 100%.InNi alloy favors the collection of photogenerated carriers by the parallel way and enhancement of the adsorption and activation of *** grown on the surface of InNi alloy not only improves the adsorption of H2and provides sufficient H+for the reaction,but also makes InNi alloy more stable during the reaction *** photothermal effect caused by In2O3accelerates the transfer of photogenerated carriers and increases the surface temperature of the catalyst,thereby synergistically promoting the reaction from a kinetic *** work ameliorates the kinetic and thermodynamic limitations of the photothermal catalytic CO2hydrogenation process through rationally designing the electron transfer direction of the sandwich structured catalysts to parallel way.

Synthesis,Growth Mechanism,and Applications of Zinc Oxide Nanomaterials

This article reviews recent progresses in growth mechanism, synthesis, and applications of zinc oxide nano-materials （mainly focusing on one-dimensional （1D） nanomaterials）. In the first part of this article, we briefly introduce the importance, the synthesis methods and growth mechanisms, the properties and applications of ZnO 1D nanomaterials. In the second part of this article, the growth mechanisms of ZnO 1D nanomaterials will be discussed in detail in the framework of vapor-liquid-solid （VLS）, vapor-solid （VS）, and aqueous solution growth （ASG） approaches. Both qualitative and quantitative information will be provided to show how a controlled synthesis of ZnO 1D nanomaterials can be achieved. In the third part of this article, we present recent progresses in our group for the synthesis of ZnO 1D nanomaterials, and the results from other groups will only be mentioned briefly. Especially, experiment designing according to theories will be elaborated to demonstrate the concept of controlled synthesis. In the fourth part of this article, the properties and potential applications of ZnO 1D nanomaterials will be treated. Finally, a summary part will be presented in the fifth section. The future trend of research for ZnO 1D nanomaterials will be pointed out and key issues to be solved will be proposed.

Multi-user quantum private comparison with scattered preparation and one-way convergent transmission of quantum states

Quantum private comparison(QPC) aims to accomplish the equality comparison of the secrets from different users without disclosing their genuine contents by using the principles of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we summarize eight modes of quantum state preparation and transmission existing in current QPC protocols first. Then, by using the mode of scattered preparation and one-way convergent transmission, we construct a new multi-user quantum private comparison(MQPC) protocol with two-particle maximally entangled states, which can accomplish arbitrary pair's comparison of equality amongK users within one execution. Analysis turns out that its output correctness and its security against both the outside attack and the participant attack are guaranteed. The proposed MQPC protocol can be implemented with current technologies. It can be concluded that the mode of scattered preparation and one-way convergent transmission of quantum states is beneficial to designing the MQPC protocol which can accomplish arbitrary pair's comparison of equality among K users within one execution.

Patternable production of SrTiO_(3) nanoparticles using 1-W laser directly on flexible humidity sensor platform based on ITO/SrTiO_(3)/CNT

Perovskite oxides like S rTiO_(3) at the nanoscale are of interest for eme rging applications,including high-k dielectrics and ***,their synthesis requires long calcination at the elevated temperature,which is a barrier of their application to flexible ***,an effective laser-assisted sol-gel method to patternably produce S rTiO_(3) na noparticles(-100 nm)in selective areas on polyimide substrates(coated with ITO)is ***,the violet-laser power is just 1 W but sufficient to crystallize the material in a short period(a few seconds).Furthermore,developing a flexible device platform using carbon nanotubes(CNT)and SrTiO_(3) nanoparticles for detection of humidity changes at room temperature is *** sensor platform has both capacitive and resistive sensing *** resistive mode with a lower power usage(about 0.2μW)is suitable for long monitoring of humidity in the range of2%RH and *** capacitive mode with higher sensitivity,faster response/recovery time(1-3 min),and lower detection limit(0.5%RH)can be used for calibration *** performance of the flexible sensor is still maintained after 5000 bending cycles at 1.5-cm ***,our synthesis method and the flexible sensor show chances for mass-producing perovskite oxides at low cost for wearable electronics.

Report on Childhood Obesity in China (4) Prevalence and Trends of Overweight and Obesity in Chinese Urban School-age Children and Adolescents, 1985-2000

Objective To describe the nationwide prevalence of childhood overweight/obesity, and their group variations and trends over the past 20 years in the Chinese urban population. Methods Data sets of boys and girls at the age of 7-18 years collected from the series of Chinese national surveillance on students＇ constitution and health （CNSSCH） between 1985 and 2000 were divided into five socioeconomic and demographic groups, while BMI classification reference proposed by Working Group on Obesity in China （WGOC） was used as screening reference to calculate the prevalence and trends of overweight/obesity in these groups. Results In 2000, the prevalence of obesity and overweight in boys aged 7-18 years was 11.3% and 6.5% in Beijing, 13.2% and 4.9% in Shanghai, 9.9% and 4.5% in coastal big cities, and 5.8% and 2.0% in coastal medium/small-sized cities, respectively, while the prevalence of of obesity and overweight in girls of the same age group was 8.2% and 3.7% in Beijing, 7.3% and 2.6% in Shanghai, 5.9% and 2.8% in coastal big cities, and 4.8% and 1.7% in coastal medium/small-sized cities, respectively. The prevalence of obesity was low in most of the inland cities at an early stage of epidemic overweight. The epidemic manifested a gradient distribution in groups, which was closely related to status （SES） of the study population. However, a dramatic and steady increasing trend was witnessed among all sex-age subgroups in the five urban groups, and such a trend was stronger in boys than in girls, and much stronger in children than in adolescents. Conclusion Although China is at an early stage of epidemic obesity by and large, the prevalence of obesity in her urban population, particularly in coastal big cities has reached the average level of developed countries. The increasing trend has been rapid since early 1990s, and the increments in obesity and overweight are exceptionally high. The prospect of epidemic obesity in China is in no way optimistic. By modeling a group of neighboring real particles as a single coarse-grained particle(CGP),discrete particle method(DPM)is now capable of simulating industrial-scale particle-fluid ***,a systematic approach to determine the CGP properties and develop their interaction models is still lacking,which casts uncertainty on the predictivity of the *** this study,collisions between predefined particle groups are analyzed to construct kernel functions for modeling the CGPs and then the model parameters are determined by equating the statistical properties of the CGPs and the real particles in the physical process *** approach is implemented for homogeneous cooling of granular gas,then demonstrated effective in simulating experimental fluidized beds.

Programming of macrophages by UV-irradiated apoptotic cancer cells inhibits cancer progression and lung metastasis

Apoptotic cell clearance by phagocytes is essential in tissue *** demonstrated that conditioned medium(CM)from macrophages exposed to apoptotic cancer cells inhibits the TGFβ1-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition(EMT),migration,and invasion of cancer *** 344SQ(ApoSQ)cell-induced PPARγactivity in macrophages increased the levels of PTEN,which was secreted in *** PTEN was taken up by recipient lung cancer ***-exposed CM from PTEN knockdown cells failed to enhance PTEN in 344SQ cells,restore cellular polarity,or exert anti-EMT and anti-invasive *** CM that was deficient in PPARγligands,including 15-HETE,lipoxin A4,and 15d-PGJ2,could not reverse the suppression of PPARγactivity or the PTEN increase in 344SQ cells and consequently failed to prevent the EMT ***,a single injection of ApoSQ cells inhibited lung metastasis in syngeneic immunocompetent mice with enhanced PPARγ/PTEN signaling both in tumorassociated macrophages and in tumor ***γantagonist GW9662 reversed the signaling by PPARγ/PTEN;the reduction in EMT-activating transcription factors,such as Snai1 and Zeb1;and the antimetastatic effect of the ApoSQ ***,the injection of apoptotic lung cancer cells may offer a new strategy for the prevention of lung metastasis.
