BACKGROUND Genomic profiling of tumors has contributed to the understanding of colorectal cancer(CRC), facilitating diagnosis, prognosis and selection of treatments,including targeted regimens. A report suggested that a 19-gene-based risk classifier(TCA19) was a prognostic tool for patients with stage III CRC. Sex-dependent difference in the effect of metformin on colorectal cancer-specific mortality of diabetic colorectal cancer patients

To assess factors associated with the higher effect of metformin on mortality in diabetic colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, since the factors related to the effectiveness of metformin have not been identified *** January 2000 and December 2010, 413 patients diagnosed with both stage 3/4 CRC and diabetes mellitus were identified. Patients’ demographics and clinical characteristics were analyzed. The effect of metformin on CRC-specific mortality and the interactions between metformin and each adjusted factor were *** follow-up duration was median 50 mo (range: 1-218 mo). There were 85 deaths (45.9%) and 72 CRC-specific deaths (38.9%) among 185 patients who used metformin, compared to 130 total deaths (57.0%) and 107 CRC-specific deaths (46.9%) among 228 patients who did not use metformin. In multivariate analysis, survival benefit associated with metformin administration was identified (HR = 0.985, 95%CI: 0.974-0.997, P = 0.012). Interaction test between metformin and sex after adjustment for relevant factors revealed that female CRC patients taking metformin exhibited a significantly lower CRC-specific mortality rate than male CRC patients taking metformin (HR = 0.369, 95%CI: 0.155-0.881, P = 0.025). Furthermore, subgroup analysis revealed significant differences in CRC-specific mortality between the metformin and non-metformin groups in female patients (HR = 0.501, 95%CI: 0.286-0.879, P = 0.013) but not male patients (HR = 0.848, 95%CI: 0.594-1.211, P = 0.365). Risk factors and prognostic value of acute severe lower gastrointestinal bleeding in Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND Acute severe lower gastrointestinal bleeding(LGIB)is an uncommon but challenging complication of Crohn’s disease(CD).AIM To identify the predictors of acute severe LGIB and to evaluate the impact of acute severe LGIB on the subsequent clinical course in CD *** A retrospective inception cohort study was conducted in 75 CD patients with acute severe LGIB and 1359 CD patients without acute severe LGIB who were diagnosed between February 1991 and November 2019 at Asan Medical Center,a tertiary university hospital in *** analysis with Cox proportional hazard regression was performed to identify the risk factors for acute severe LGIB.A matched analysis using 72 patients with bleeding and 267 matched patients without within the cohort was also conducted to investigate whether acute severe LGIB is a predictor of clinical outcomes of *** Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that early use of thiopurines[hazard ratio(HR):0.23,95%confidence interval(CI):0.12-0.48;Phavioral progression and intestinal resection were not significantly different between the two matched groups(P=0.139 and P=0.769,respectively).The hospitalization rate was higher in the bleeding group than in the matched non-bleeding group(22.1/100 vs 13.2/100 patient-years;P=0.012).However,if hospitalizations due to bleeding episodes were excluded from the analysis,the hospitalization rate was not significantly different between the bleeding group and the matched nonbleeding group(14.5/100 vs 13.2/100 patient-years;P=0.631).CONCLUSION Early use of thiopurines may reduce the risk of acute severe *** of acute severe LGIB may not have a significant prognostic value in patients with CD.

Ethnicity might be associated with treatment outcomes in advanced prostate *** study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)combined with apalutamide in East Asians with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer(mCSPC).The original phase 3 Targeted Investigational Treatment Analysis of Novel Anti-androgen(TITAN)trial was conducted at 260 sites in 23 *** subgroup analysis included patients enrolled in 62 participating centers in China,Japan,and *** progression-free survival(PFS),time to prostate-specific antigen(PSA)progression,and PSA changes from baseline were compared between groups in the East Asian *** intent-to-treat East Asian population included 111 and 110 participants in the apalutamide and placebo groups,*** 24-month radiographic PFS rates were 76.1%and 52.3%in the apalutamide and placebo groups,respectively(apalutamide vs placebo:hazard ratio[HR]=0.506;95%confidence interval[CI],0.302–0.849;P=0.009).Median time to PSA progression was more favorable with apalutamide than placebo(HR=0.210;95%CI,0.124–0.357;Phan that in the placebo group(37.3%vs 9.1%).The most common grade 3 or 4 AEs were rash(12[10.9%])and hypertension(12[10.9%])for *** efficacy and safety of apalutamide in the East Asian subgroup of the TITAN trial are consistent with the global results.

Effect of Additives on the Morphology of the Hydrated Product and Physical Properties of a Calcium Phosphate Cement

The morphology of a hydrated calcium phosphate cement （CPC） doped with several normally used additives was investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and the compressive strength of the cement was determined in this study. The hydrated products of CPC without additives was rod-like hydroxyapatite （ha） grains with around 2-5 μm in length and 100 nm in width. The addition of Sr obviously decreased the crystal size of the rod-like grains. CPCs containing carbonate, collagen and gelatin showed flake-like crystal morphology. Crylic acid-containing CPC presented flocculus-like structure. And malic acid-containing CPC exhibited oriented flake-like structure. The X-ray diffraction （XRD） analysis showed that the additives used in this study did not alter the hydration products of the cement. The compressive strength tests indicated that the compressive strength of the cement with rod-like morphology ha crystals was much higher than that of the cement with flake-like morphology ha crystals, and the cement with oriented flake-like morphology ha crystals exhibited the poorest compressive strength.

Phosphomonoesterase Activities,Kinetics and Thermodynamics in a Paddy Soil After Receiving Swine Manure for Six years

Soil phosphomonoesterase plays a critical role in controlling phosphorus(P) cycling for crop nutrition,especially in P-deficient soils.A 6-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate soil phosphomonoesterase activities,kinetics and thermodynamics during rice growth stages after consistent swine manure application,to understand the impacts of swine manure amendment rates on soil chemical and enzymatic properties,and to investigate the correlations between soil enzymatic and chemical *** experiment was set out in a randomized complete block design with three replicates and five treatments including three swine manure rates(26,39,and 52 kg P ha^(-1),representing low,middle,and high application rates,respectively) and two controls(no-fertilizer and superphosphate at 26 kg P ha^(-1)).The results indicated that the grain yield and soil chemical properties were significantly improved with the application of P-based swine manure from 0 to 39 kg P ha^(-1);however,the differences between the 39(M_(39)) and 52 kg P ha^(-1) treatments(M_(52)) were not *** enzymatic property analysis indicated that acid phosphomonoesterase was the predominant phosphomonoesterase in the tested *** M_(39) and M_(52) treatments had relatively high initial velocity(V_0),maximal velocity(V_(max)),and activation grade(lgN_a) but low Michaelis constant(K_m),temperature coefficient(Q_(10)),activation energy(E_a),and activation enthalpy(ΔH),implying that the M_(39) and M_(52) treatments could stimulate the enzyme-catalyzed reactions more easily than all other *** correlation analysis showed that the distribution of soil phosphomonoesterase activities mainly followed the distributions of total C and total *** on these results,39 kg P ha^(-1) could be recommended as the most appropriate rate of swine manure amendment.

Hydrogen-induced marginal growth model for the synthesis of graphene by arc discharge

High-quality graphene is prepared by arc discharge with low cost under hydrogen atmosphere. However, the growth mechanism of graphene synthesis by arc discharge remains unclear. In this paper, the hydrogen-induced marginal growth(HIMG) model is deduced to study the growth mechanism of graphene by combining experiment with numerical simulation results. First, the characteristics of thick edges and thin middle and containing hydrogen are verified by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. In addition, numerical simulation provides the chemical species and temperature range of graphene growth. Second, the marginal growth pattern of hydrogen transfer and carbon addition is introduced because the C–H and C–C reduce configuration energy and island energy, respectively. Meanwhile, the stacking growth at the margin of the graphene island leads to the longitudinal growth of graphene because of the Van der Waals force and the effect of self-assembly,increasing the number of graphene layers. Finally, graphene sheets with a small amount of hydrogen are deposited on the inner wall after annealing. The investigation of the growth mechanism of graphene under hydrogen atmosphere lays a foundation for the large-scale preparation of graphene by arc discharge.
