Estimation of Groundwater Recharge Using Water Table Fluctuation Method in Bamako and Surrounding Areas, Mali

Bamako’s geographic and demographic expansion is sure to increase the need for water, and the slow development of the water supply network seems unable to meet this need. The knowledge of the approximate quantity of water reaching the groundwater is crucial, given the high dependence of this city and its surrounding area on groundwater. The aim of this study is to estimate the average groundwater recharge on a monthly scale, based on measurements taken over a 24-month period by using Water Table Fluctuation (WTF). The monthly recharge values obtained from the 15 piezometers in the study area by using WTF method vary from 1.04 to 38.81 mm with an average value of 9.74 mm. As part of the precipitations, these values represent respectively 1.29%, 48.52% and 12.17% of monthly average precipitation. It appears in this study that despite the piezometers belonging to the same climatic zone, the recharge rate can be different because of many factors such as the thickness of the aquifers, the soil and geology type, the local land cover and land use activities.

Management of the Prevention of the Rhesus Alloimmunization: Case of the Mother-Child Hospital Dominique Ouattara of Bingerville/Ivory Coast/West Africa

Introduction: Perinatal mortality linked to fetal anemia of red cell alloimmunization in Côte d’Ivoire as in many developing countries can be explained by a lack of knowledge of Rhesus D feto-maternal alloimmunization, hence the obvious importance of carrying out a study on the problem of prevention of alloimmunization in rhesus negative births. This study takes stock of the management of this pathology in a reference hospital. Results and Discussion: Rh-negative mothers account for 6% of births, 42.7% (70/164) of women had a history of risk, about 61% of women had not had proper prophylaxis during previous pregnancies;and as many had not had follow-up of the coombs test during the current pregnancy;only 4.9% of patients had systematic prophylaxis with anti D serum at 28 weeks of pregnancy. This low rate of prevention is related to the financial difficulties of the patients, but also to a lack of knowledge of the pathology by the nursing staff. Conclusion: Good management of rhesus negative women during their pregnancy allows their incompatible child to benefit from all current treatments ensuring a healthy birth. It is therefore important for medical personnel to know how to deal with this rare disease in a small proportion of pregnant women.

Experimental Study and Thermal Modelling of Cocoa Shell Convective Drying in an Indirect Solar Dryer

The concern of the present work is the convective drying of empty cocoa shells in an indirect solar dryer. Some drying experiments, using one sample, were carried out. During the experiments, the sample is introduced in the drying chamber. Then at steady time intervals, the sample is withdrawn from the drying chamber, for a rapid weighing. After each weighing, the sample is reintroduced in the dryer. At each time interval, the ambient temperature of the drying chamber and its relative humidity γ are measured by a thermo-hygrometer. From the experimental data, a theoretical determination of the moisture evaporated from the product was performed and a good agreement was found between the theoretical and experimental values, confirmed by the value of the RMSE. Those calculations used the constants in the Nusselt number found in literature. Then those constants were evaluated again, to get new values more suitable with the experimental data. The dimensionless numbers of Nusselt, Grashof and Prandtl were calculated. That allowed the calculation of the average value of the Nusselt number. The average convective heat transfer coefficient was determined.

Is the Mock Transfer Enough Reliable to Evaluate Hysterometry for Embryo Transfer?

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of the mock transfer during in vitro fertilization process Method: A case-control study was conducted on 134 patients included in IVF/ICSI cycles. From the hysterometry obtained during the mock transfer, the ideal embryo replacement site, i.e. two cm from the uterine fundus has been determined. Results: Significant differences were noted between the area estimated from the mock transfer and the area where the embryo was deposited during the actual embryo transfer. In fact, 15.9% of the patients had a difference between four and six cm, and 32% of the patients returning for a subsequent transfer had at least 2 cm of difference between the embryo deposit zones. This difference was significant (P 0.00) Conclusion: More than ultrasound guidance, the challenge with embryo transfer is to be able to minimize variations in the length of the uterus. This would make it possible to determine the ideal transfer depot area without multiple manipulations.

Numerical Modeling and Simulation of CIGS-Based Solar Cells with ZnS Buffer Layer

Usually a buffer layer of cadmium sulphide is used in high efficiency solar cells based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2(CIGS). Because of cadmium toxicity, many in-vestigations have been conducted to use Cd-free buffer layers. Our work focuses on this type of CIGS-based solar cells where CdS is replaced by a ZnS buffer layer. In this contribution, AFORS-HET software is used to simulate n-ZnO: Al/i-ZnO/n-ZnS/p-CIGS/Mo polycrystalline thin-film solar cell where the key parts are p-CIGS absorber layer and n-ZnS buffer layer. The characteristics of these key parts: thickness and Ga-content of the absorber layer, thickness of the buffer layer and doping concentrations of absorber and buffer layers have been investigated to optimize the conversion efficiency. We find a maximum conversion efficiency of 26% with a short-circuit current of 36.9 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage of 824 mV, and a fill factor of 85.5%.

Olecranon Bone Tumor Complicated by Ulnar Nerve Paresis Revealing Tuberculous Osteitis—About a Case

Introduction: The localization of bone tuberculosis at the level of the olecranon is rare and can pose a problem of differential diagnosis with a tumoral affection. Only the biopsy allows the diagnosis of certainty. The goal was to report our first case to do a review of the literature. Clinical Observation: This was a 64-year-old patient who consulted 2 years after the onset of symptoms for swelling and mechanical pain in the left elbow. On clinical examination there was a firm consistent mass measuring 6/4 cm in diameter, not very painful and hot on the posterior surface of the left elbow, accompanied by paresthesias in the territory of the ulnar nerve associated with partial functional impotence of the left forearm with little altered general condition. The X-rays of the left elbow showed extensive bone lysis of the olecranon with fracture of the base of the olecranon. The CT Scan of the elbow performed showed osteolysis of the olecranon with extensive bone reactions at the distal end of the humerus. The biopsy carried out with histological examination concluded with an aspect of tuberculous osteitis and the culture came back sterile. A curettage was performed associated with anti-tuberculosis treatment for 12 months as well as the placement of a posterior splint. The evolution at 9 months was unsatisfactory with persistence of paresis and stiffness of the elbow. Conclusion: Tuberculous osteitis of the olecranon can simulate a malignant tumor with non-specific signs of bone tuberculosis. Only the anatomopathological examination is definitive for the diagnosis. The treatment is multidisciplinary. Orthopedic evolution is difficult to predict.

Carbon and Nitrogen Mineralization Kinetics from Organically-Amended Upland Purplish Soil

The application of organic amendments in upland soils may influence soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) mineralization, which are very important for understanding plant nutrition. However, the kinetics of C and N mineralization from organically amended upland purplish soils has been poorly studied. Therefore, this study investigates C and N mineralization kinetics in organically amended upland purplish soils. Incubation experiments were conducted using soil samples collected from experimental plots that have been under long-term organic amendment fertilization, which includes: Organic manure (OM), crop residues (CR), combined organic manure with inorganic fertilizers (OMNPK), combined crop residue with inorganic fertilizers (CRNPK), conventional inorganic fertilizer (NPK), and no fertilizer (CK). The results showed that organically amended treatments increased C and N mineralization rates by 8 - 24% and 17 - 33%, respectively, compared with NPK. Likewise, the amount of potentially mineralizable carbon (Co) and nitrogen (No) increased by 4 - 9% and 15 - 20%, respectively, compared to the conventional NPK treatment. The rate constants for labile C (kC) and N (kN) were 6 - 29% and 3 - 27% higher than the NPK treatment, respectively. In addition, the initial potential rate of C (Co × kC) and N (No × kN) in organically amended soils were 10 - 37% and 18 - 52% higher compared to NPK. This study tried to show that the mechanisms of N supply was direct application of mineral N fertilizer and mineralization of organic N, while the N retention was reducing soil active N loss and storing more active N in cropland of purplish soil. These results suggest that the long-term application of organic amendments to upland soils may increase nutrient bioavailability.

Complications of Corticosteroid Therapy in Rheumatological Practice in Guinea

Introduction: Corticosteroid therapy used in rheumatology is effective but can lead to complications. The objective was to describe the complications of corticosteroid therapy in rheumatological practice at Ignace Deen University Hospital (Conakry). Methods: Cross-sectional study from July 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. All patients who had been diagnosed with a rheumatological disease and who had received corticosteroid therapy were included. Results: Of the 1489 patients suffering from rheumatological diseases, 238 (15.9%) had received corticosteroid therapy. The average age of the patients was 48.5 ± 17.16 years with a female predominance (70.5%). The main indications for corticosteroid therapy were lower back pain due to probable disco-radicular impingement (35.8%) followed by rheumatoid arthritis (21.9%). The predominant method of administration was infiltration (56.9%). The average dosage was 24.2 ± 13.5 mg prednisone equivalent (range: 5 mg and 40 mg). Complications were present in 26 patients (10.9%) such as muscle cramps (3.8%), hypocalcemia (3.4%), edema of the lower limbs (3%), stimulation of appetite and weight gain (3%), high blood pressure (2.5%), hyperglycemia (2.5%). The occurrence of complications was associated with the high dose of corticosteroid (p = 0.014) and long-term use (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Corticosteroid therapy used in 15.9% of consultations in the rheumatology department of Ignace Deen University Hospital led to 10.9% of complications. These complications were related to the dose and duration of corticosteroid therapy.
