Neural stem cell-derived exosomes promote mitochondrial biogenesis and restore abnormal protein distribution in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.We previously showed that neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles improved mitochondrial function in the cortex of AP P/PS1 mice.Because Alzheimer’s disease affects the entire brain,further research is needed to elucidate alterations in mitochondrial metabolism in the brain as a whole.Here,we investigated the expression of several important mitochondrial biogenesis-related cytokines in multiple brain regions after treatment with neural stem cell-derived exosomes and used a combination of whole brain clearing,immunostaining,and lightsheet imaging to clarify their spatial distribution.Additionally,to clarify whether the sirtuin 1(SIRT1)-related pathway plays a regulatory role in neural stem cell-de rived exosomes interfering with mitochondrial functional changes,we generated a novel nervous system-SIRT1 conditional knoc kout AP P/PS1mouse model.Our findings demonstrate that neural stem cell-de rived exosomes significantly increase SIRT1 levels,enhance the production of mitochondrial biogenesis-related fa ctors,and inhibit astrocyte activation,but do not suppress amyloid-βproduction.Thus,neural stem cell-derived exosomes may be a useful therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer’s disease that activates the SIRT1-PGC1αsignaling pathway and increases NRF1 and COXIV synthesis to improve mitochondrial biogenesis.In addition,we showed that the spatial distribution of mitochondrial biogenesis-related factors is disrupted in Alzheimer’s disease,and that neural stem cell-derived exosome treatment can reverse this effect,indicating that neural stem cell-derived exosomes promote mitochondrial biogenesis.

Optimal Kalman-like filter for a class of nonlinear stochastic systems

This paper deals with an optimal Kalman-like filter for nonlinear discrete-time systems aided with auto and cross-correlated noises and stochastic parameter matrices involved in state and measurement equa-tions,and random nonlinearity.The random variables are proposed by their statistical characteristics while the inquiry is focused on stochastic multivariate analysis and calculation.For the nonlinear sys-tem with the auto and cross-correlated noises and stochastic parameter matrices,an equivalent system is first reconstructed by decomposing stochastic parameter matrices and introducing uncorrelated pseudo-noises.Then a recursive filter that ensures unbiasedness and minimizes the error variance is designed for the newly transformed equivalent system.Finally,the filter is verified by applying it to some numerical simulations.

From beasts to bytes:Revolutionizing zoological research with artificial intelligence

Since the late 2010s,Artificial Intelligence(AI)including machine learning,boosted through deep learning,has boomed as a vital tool to leverage computer vision,natural language processing and speech recognition in revolutionizing zoological research.This review provides an overview of the primary tasks,core models,datasets,and applications of AI in zoological research,including animal classification,resource conservation,behavior,development,genetics and evolution,breeding and health,disease models,and paleontology.Additionally,we explore the challenges and future directions of integrating AI into this field.Based on numerous case studies,this review outlines various avenues for incorporating AI into zoological research and underscores its potential to enhance our understanding of the intricate relationships that exist within the animal kingdom.As we build a bridge between beast and byte realms,this review serves as a resource for envisioning novel AI applications in zoological research that have not yet been explored.

A 38-Year Climatology of Explosive Cyclones over the Northern Hemisphere

Explosive cyclones(ECs)over two basins in the Northern Hemisphere(20°-90°N)from January 1979 to December2016 are investigated using ERA-Interim and Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature(OISST)data.The classical definition of an EC is modified considering not only the rapid drop of the central sea level pressure of the cyclone,but also the strong wind speed at the height of 10 m in which maximum wind speeds greater than 17.2 m s^-1are included.According to the locations of the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific,the whole Northern Hemisphere is divided into the"A region"(20°-90°N,90°W-90°E)and"P region"(20°-90°N,90°E-90°W).Over both the A and P regions,the climatological features of ECs,such as their spatial distribution,intensity,seasonal variation,interannual variation,and moving tracks,are documented.

Insight into the reaction mechanism of sulfur chains adjustable polymer cathode for high-loading lithium-organosulfur batteries

Small molecules with adjustable sulfur atoms in the confined structure were acted as precursor for the synthesis of polymer cathodes for lithium-organosulfur batteries.Among them,poly(diallyl tetrasulfide)(PDATtS)delivered a high capacity of 700 mAh g^(-1),stable capacity retention of 85%after 300 cycles,high areal capacity~4 m Ah cm^(-2) for electrode with up to 10.3 mg cm^(-2) loading.New insight into the reaction mechanism of PDATtS electrode that radicals arisen from the homolytic cleavage of S-S bond in PDATtS reacted with Li+to generate thiolates(RSLi)and insoluble lithium sulfides(Li_(2)S)or lithium disulfide(Li_(2)S_(2))was clearly verified by in-situ UV/Vis spectroscopy,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)studies and density-functional theory(DFT)calculations.Therefore,based on the unique reaction mechanism,problems of rapid capacity fading due to the formation of soluble polysulfide intermediates and their serious shuttle effect in conventional lithium-sulfur(Li-S)batteries was totally avoided,realizing the dendrite-free lithium sulfur batteries.This study sets new trends for avenues of further research to advance Li-S battery technologies.

导气同精为《灵枢·五乱》中所载的针刺手法,“徐入徐出,谓之导气,补泻无形,谓之同精”。历代医家对于“导气同精”有不同的理解。文章从《黄帝内经》出发,通过梳理隋代杨上善、金代李东垣、清代黄元御及现代不同医家对于“导气同精”的见解,思考“导气同精”的内涵,认为“导气同精”不是一种针刺补泻的手法,而是一种将逆乱之气导引顺治的针刺手法。临床中可将“导气同精”这一针刺手法运用于各种气机逆乱所致之证,并选用胸、腹、头、胫四气街局部的相关穴位进行治疗,为针刺临床治疗提供另一种治疗选择。

Biodegradation of Ammonia Nitrogen Using a Novel Candida sp. Strain N6 Immobilization

Due to the high efficiency of ammonia nitrogen degradation,a novel Candida sp.strain N6 was applied for wastewater treatment by using immobilization technology.Immobilization conditions and corresponding ammonia removal capacity of immobilized N6 beads were investigated.The immobilized N6 beads were applied to degrade simulated ammonia nitrogen wastewater.Results showed that the optimum formula of immobilized materials was 9%polyvinyl alcohol,1.5%sodium alginate,and 2%calcium chloride,under which the ammonia nitrogen removal rate of the immobilized N6 beads reached 97.97%.The following immobilization conditions were observed to be optimal:the immobilization time was 24 h,the inoculum of N6 was 3%,and the pH was 8.The immobilized N6 beads exhibited excellent ammonianitrogen degradation ability in SBRs.The ammonia nitrogen removal rate was stable at 95%-99%in the SBRs.The results indicated that immobilized N6 beads possess good application prospects in the treatment of ammonia nitrogen wastewater.

Diagnostic Analyses and Numerical Modeling of Explosive Cyclone over Northwestern Pacific on January 11-13,2012

In this paper,we use FNL grid data obtained from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP)to analyze an explosive cyclone(EC)that occurred over the northwestern Pacific Ocean from January 11 to 13,2012.To simulate the EC,we used the Weather Research and Forecasting model(WRFV3.5).The cyclone outbreak occurred east of Japan from January 11 to 12 and weakened near the Kamchatka Peninsula on January 13.The analysis results show a distinct frontal structure,in which the high potential vorticity(PV)of the upper troposphere extends downward to the surface,which can facilitate EC development.A low-level jet stream develops with the EC,which can lead to more distinct convergence.The results of sea surface temperature(SST)sensitivity tests suggest that changes in the SST can affect cyclone intensity,but have little effect on its path.When small changes are made to the SST,the air pressure at the cyclonic center responds more distinctly to an increased SST than a decreased SST.The results of our latent heat release test suggest that diabatic heating processes lead to maximum PV values in the lower troposphere.Latent heat is also one of the important factors influencing EC development.

CEOs’Diverse Career Experiences and the Effectiveness of Compensation Contracts:Evidence from Compensation Stickiness

CEO compensation stickiness represents an important indicator to measure the effectiveness of compensation contracts.This study uses CEO career experience data and compensation stickiness data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2020 to investigate the compensation contracts’effectiveness of CEOs with diverse career experiences.The findings are as follows:1)Compensation stickiness is more pronounced for CEOs with diverse career experiences.According to the mechanism test,these CEOs with diverse career experiences can obtain compensation incentives by reducing corporate uncertainty perception and improving total factor productivity.This approach leads to increased compensation stickiness and the effectiveness of compensation contracts.CEOs with diverse career experiences may receive excess compensation by raising agency costs,which intensifies compensation stickiness and weakens the effectiveness of compensation contracts.2)Compensation stickiness of CEOs with diverse career experiences is more significant in companies with lower investor protection,which brings about less effective compensation contracts.In contrast,in companies with higher diversification,the compensation stickiness of CEOs with diverse career experiences is more significant,which delivers more effective compensation contracts.The conclusions deepen the research of CEO compensation contracts and provide a helpful reference for CEO compensation management practices.
