Recent successful examples for synthesis of new polyolefins containing (polar) functionalities by adopting the approaches by controlled incorporation of reactive functionalities (and the subsequent introduction of polar functionalities under mild conditions) by coordination polymerization in the presence of transition metal complex catalysts have been described. Related methods (such as direct copolymerization of olefin with polar monomer using living radical or coordination insertion methods) have also been demonstrated for comparison. Our recent efforts for precise synthesis of polyolefins containing polar functionalities by efficient incorporation of reactive functionality by copolymerization of ethylene with nonconjugateddiene (1,7-octadiene, vinylcyclohexene etc.) or divinyl-biphenyl using nonbridged half-titanocene [ex. Cp’TiCl2(O-2,6-iPr2C6H3), Cp’ = C5Me5, tBuC5H4 etc.] catalysts have been introduced.

In order to elucidate the indirect effect by radiation on DNA base pairs, we investigate the mechanism for the attacking reaction of a hydroxyl radical (·OH-radical) to the G-C and A-T base pairs, by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The effect of solvation on the mechanism is also revealed by performing the same DFT calculations under the continuum solvation approximation. We find the stable structures for the dehydrogenated G-C and A-T base pairs, in which the hydrogen atom of NH2 group of G or A base is abstracted by the ·OH-radical. The solvation around the base pairs stabilizes the dehydrogenated structures significantly, indicating the acceleration of the attacking reaction by ·OH-radical to the base pairs in water. Therefore, we conclude that the hydrogen atom of the NH2 group of G or A base in the G-C and A-T base pairs is the most preferably abstracted by the ·OH-radical in living cells.

In order to upgrade the conventional wood pellet, Japanese softwood and hardwood chips were torrefied at around 200-350℃, and pelletized. The characteristics of the torrefied material/pellets such as their calorific value, grinding energy, pelletizing energy and elemental composition, were also evaluated in this study. The calorific value rose with increasing torrefaction temperature and exceeded 25 MJ/kg （an increase of nearly 40% compared to the untreated state） for torrefaction at around 350℃. The grinding energy greatly decreased with increasing torrefaction temperature, and the reduction was larger for Japanese oak hardwood chips. The pelletization energy for the torrefied material tended to be slightly smaller than in the untreated case. People named such torrefied pellet as ＂hyper wood pellet＂.

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the clinical and immunological factors influ encing sialometry in xerostomia patients. Method: The association between sialometry and other clinical examinations were investigated in a cross-sectional study. A total of 179 dry mouth patients showing hyposalivation who underwent a clinical examination were enrolled in this study. Multiple regression analyses were employed to examine the relative con-tributions of clinical and immunological factors including age, gender, parotid sialography, labial Salivary gland biopsy, anti-Ro/SS-A antibodies, and anti-La/SS-B antibodies to the resting (RSF) or stimulated saliva flow rate (SSF). Results: An increase of the stage of sialography, the grade of a labial biopsy, and the presence of anti-La/SS-B antibody had a significant correlation with a decrease of sialometry. Results of the multiple regression analysis showed that age (standardized coefficient = -0.244), grade of lip biopsy (-0.189), and anti-SS-B antibody (-0.171), were significantly associated with the RSF. The stage of sialography (?0.423) and age (-0.169) were significantly related to the sialometry in the SSF according to a multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the measurement of RSF reflects the immunological factors and SSF reflects the damage to the parotid gland.

Upgraded Pellet Making by Torrefaction—Torrefaction of Japanese Wood Pellets

Upgraded wood pellets were produced and evaluated by torrefaction of wood pellets. In this study, conventional wood pellets were initially prepared and subsequently torrefied on a laboratory and then larger scale. During the laboratory scale production, pellets from wooden parts of Japanese cedar (sugi, Cryptomeria japonica) and Japanese oak (konara, Quercus serrata) trees were heat- treated in an inert gas oven under nitrogen atmosphere around 170°C - 320°C. For the Japanese cedar, the calorific values were improved by heat treatment up to 260°C. By heat treatment at 240°C, the upgrade ratio of higher heating value (HHV) was nearly 30% and the energy yield was 97%. For the Japanese oak, the calorific values were improved by heat treatment up to 320°C. By heat treatment at 280°C, the upgrade ratio of HHV exceeded 30% and the energy yield was 84%. On a larger scale, a conventional charcoal oven was modified for torrefied wood pellet production, meaning that torrefied wood pellet with 25 MJ/kg of calorific value was produced during heat treatment at 350°C. A mixture of conventional and torrefied pellets was applied to a commercial pellet stove, and torrefied wood pellets produced in this study might be usable as fuel for conventional pellet stoves.

Tetrandrine (1 μM), a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from Stephania tetrandra S Moore, signifi-cantly decreased tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα;10 ng/ml)-induced increase in the number of micro vessels that budded from cultured rat choroidal explants. Tetrandrine also decreased the TNFα-induced in-crease in the number of cells composing the microvessels. Ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC;0.1-0.3 μM), an inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), decreased the TNFα-induced increase in the number of microvessels in a concentration-dependent manner. TNFα increased the phosphorylation and degradation of inhibitor of NF-κB (IκBα), as well as increasing the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB in choroidal explants. TNF? induced an increase of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A mRNA, but not VEGF-C mRNA or VEGF-D mRNA. TNFα-induced angiogenic action was inhibited by treatment of VEGF-A antibody in cultured choroidal capillaries. Tetrandrine inhibited the TNFα-induced increases of phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα, and reduced the TNFα-induced increase of DNA-binding activity of NF-κB in chor-oidal explants. In conclusion, tetrandrine inhibits TNFα-induced activation of NF-κB in the choroidal capil-laries via inhibition of TNFα-induced phosphorylation of IκBα.

AIM： To determine the efficacy of an interferon alpha and ribavirin combination treatment for Japanese patients infected with hepatitis C virus （HCV） of genotype 2, a multi-center study was retrospectively analyzed. METHODS： In total, 173 patients with HCV genotype 2 started to receive interferon-alpha subcutaneously thrice a week and 600-800 mg of ribavirin daily for 24 wk. RESULTS： The overall sustained virological response （SVR）, defined as undetectable HCV RNA in serum, 24 wk after the end of treatment, was remarkably high by 84.4%, （146/173） by an intention-to-treat analysis. A significant difference in SVR was found between patients with and without the discontinuation of ribavirin （46.9% vs 92.9 %）, but no difference was found between those with and without a dose reduction of ribavirin. A significant difference in SVR was also found between patients with less than 16 wk and patients with 16 or more weeks of ribavirin treatment （34.8 % vs 92.0 %）. CONCLUSION： The 24-wk interferon and ribavirin treatment is highly effective for Japanese patients with HCV genotype 2. The significant predictor of SVR is continuation of the ribavirin treatment for up to 16
