Algae are reported to be corrosive,while little is known about the role of the algae associated bacteria in the corrosion *** the present study,Halomonas titanicae was isolated from a culture of an alga strain,Spirulina platensis,and identified through 16 S rRNA gene *** behavior of 304L stainless steel(SS)coupons in the presence and absence of *** was characterized by using electrochemical measurements and surface *** results showed that *** significantly accelerated the corrosion rate and decreased the pitting potential of 304L SS in the biotic *** removal of the corrosion products and biofilms,severe pitting corrosion caused by *** was *** largest pit depth after 14 d reached 6.6μm,which was 5.5 times higher than that of the sterile control(1.2μm).This is the first report revealing that an alga associated bacterium can induce microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC),and a further concern is raised that whether algae play a role in the MIC process.

In the present study, a novel bacterium( Marinobacter aquaeolei) was examined for its corrosion inhibiting behaviour against X80 pipeline steel. electrochemical results showed that X80 steel immersed in the solution inoculated with M. aquaeolei possessed very high corrosion resistance compared to that of abiotic control. Besides, scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to analyse the corrosion product and the biofi lm formed on the metal surface. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was also applied to determine the composition of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS). Above results indicated that the corrosion inhibition effciency observed in biotic medium was very high(91%), proving that M. aquaeolei was an effective inhibitive agent for the corrosion of carbon steel. The inhibition was credited to the formation of bacterial biofi lm and the compact protective layer of the secreted EPS. Thus, this study will introduce a natural, environmentally friendly and cost-effective system for the corrosion control of the carbon steel.

AIM: To determine the effective hospitalization period as the clinical pathway to prepare patients for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study which included 189 patients consecutively treated by ESD at the National Cancer Center Hospital from May 2007 to March 2009. Patients were divided into 2 groups; patients in group A were discharged in 5 d and patients in group B included those who stayed longer than 5 d. The following data were collected for both groups: mean hospitalization period, tumor site, median tumor size, post-ESD rectal bleeding requiring urgent endoscopy, perforation during or after ESD, abdominal pain, fever above 38 ℃, and blood test results positive for inflammatory markers before and after ESD. Each parameter was compared after data collection. RESULTS: A total of 83% (156/189) of all patients could be discharged from the hospital on day 3 postESD. Complications were observed in 12.1% (23/189) of patients. Perforation occurred in 3.7% (7/189) of patients. All the perforations occurred during the ESD procedure and they were managed with endoscopic clipping. The incidence of post-operative bleeding was 2.6% (5/189); all the cases involved rectal bleeding. We divided the subjects into 2 groups: tumor diameter ≥ 4 cm and ell count was 6800 ± 2280 (cells/μL; ± SD) for group A, and 7700 ± 2775 (cells/μL; ± SD) for group B, showing a statistically significant difference (P = 0.023, t-test). The mean C-reactive protein values the day after ESD were 0.4 ± 1.3 mg/dL and 0.5 ± 1.3 mg/dL for groups A and B, respectively, with no significant difference between the 2 groups (P = 0.54, t -test). Microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) is a big threat to the strength and safety of many metallic materials used in different environments throughout the world. The metabolites and bioactivity of the microorganisms cause severe deterioration on the metals. In this study, MIC of pure titanium(Ti) was studied in the presence of a highly corrosive aerobic marine bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results obtained from electrochemical test showed that Ti was corrosion resistant in the abiotic culture medium after 14 d, while the increased corrosion current density(i_(corr)) obtained from polarization curves and the decreased charge transfer resistance(R_(ct)) from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)indicated the accelerated corrosion of Ti caused by P. aeruginosa biofilm. For further confirmation of the above results, the surface of Ti was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). According to the XPS results, TiO_2 was formed in both abiotic and biotic conditions, while unstable oxide Ti_2O_3 was detected in the presence of P. aeruginosa, leading to the defects in the passive film and localized corrosion. Pitting corrosion was investigated with the help of CLSM, and the largest pit depth found on Ti surface immersed in P. aeruginosa was 1.2 μm. Ti was not immune to MIC caused by P. aeruginosa.

Traffic safety and performance measures such as crash risk and queue lengths or travel times are influenced by several important factors including those related to environment,human,and roadway design,especially at *** research has studied different aspects related to these factors,yet these characteristics are not fully investigated with a focus on age and experience of *** this paper,we investigate this issue by using a two-phase approach via a case study application on a critical T-intersection in the City of Tallahassee,*** first phase includes a scenario-based microsimulation analysis through the use of a microscopic simulation software,namely VISSIM,to illustrate the variations in traffic performance measures with respect to driver compositions of different age groups in the traffic stream.A variety of scenarios is created where the driving characteristics are provided as inputs to these scenarios in terms of decision making and risk *** is also supported by a sensitivity analysis conducted based on the driver composition in the *** second phase includes the analysis of microsimulation outputs via a tool developed by Federal Highway Administration tool,namely the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model(SSAM),in order to determine the traffic conflicts that occur in each *** conflicts are also compared with real-life crash data for validation *** show that(a) the differences in risk perception that affect driving behavior might be significant in influencing traffic safety and performance measures,and(b) the proposed approach is considerably successful in simulating the actual crash conflict points.

目的湖北钉螺(***)的内在防御机制,特别是它们的血淋巴细胞,被认为是无脊椎动物防御系统的主要效应因子,对于控制寄生虫病的传播很有意义。在本次实验中,我们对于阴性湖北钉螺(***)和感染日本血吸虫(Schistosoma japonicum)的阳性湖北钉螺(***)的血淋巴细胞进行了定性和定量的比较研究。方法分别在培养后3、5、7、12、16、20、25、30、35、40、45、50、55、60、65、70、75、80、85和90d对其进行连续组织切片和H&E染色观察。结果发现血淋巴细胞具有一个圆形的核,在其被染成深蓝色的细胞质中有一些密集的颗粒状物质。根据细胞核的体积,血淋巴细胞可以分为大、中和小3种类型,其直径分别为8.1～8.6μm(大),5.5～6.0μm(中),4.2～4.7μm(小)。通过对湖北钉螺(***)的足部、围心腔、胃肠道、消化腺以及生殖腺5个器官部位的血淋巴细胞计数观察发现感染日本血吸虫(***)后的湖北钉螺(***),这几处的血淋巴细胞数量都有所增加。湖北钉螺的血淋巴细胞在围心腔处最多,而在足部区域最少。这3种类型的血淋巴细胞在钉螺所有部位都有所增加,且中型血淋巴细胞最多,大型和小型血淋巴细胞较少。结论本次研究中所得到的数据在湖北钉螺(***)对于日本血吸虫(***)的内在防御机制以及更有效的控制血吸虫病的深入研究中具有相当的意义。日本血吸虫;湖北钉螺;血淋巴细胞;
