Flexible ac transmission system(FACTS)controllers,especially the series-FACTS controllers,affect the operation of distance relays and can lead to the relays under/*** paper aims to demonstrate the effects of static synchronous series compensator(SSSC)and series capacitive compensation(SCC),as two important series compensators,on the distance protection using theoretical and computational *** results of the investigation are used to develop a feasible and adequate method for eliminating the negative effects of these devices on the distance *** developed method measures the voltages at terminals of the SSSC and SCC by phasor measurement units(PMUs)which are then transmitted to the relay location by communication *** transmitted signals are used to modify the voltage measured by the *** operation types and conditions of SSSC and SCC,and different faults such as phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground faults are investigated in *** the modeled distance relay can measure the fault resistance,trip boundaries are used to show the performance of the presented *** show that the presented method properly eliminates the negative effects on the distance relays and prevents them from mal-operation under all fault resistance conditions.

Smart grid design and structures are somehow depending on the way of designing and operating Microgrids. In this research a unique design of microgrid is proposed as in medium tension isolated power distribution system contains diesel generation unit and photovoltaic generation. Storage system is a part of the control strategy to reduce the diesel usage and to maintain the balance between generation and demand which might be disturbed due to the presence of PV system. Fuzzy logic control scheme has been chosen compared with conventional controller to be the main controller for both the diesel unit and storage system. Promising result has been found by digital simulation using Matlab Simulink proving the possibility of reducing the dependency on fossil fueled generators and increase the utilization of renewable energy.

Physico-Chemical Properties of Compost Based Waste-Recycling of Grape Fruit as Nursery Growing Medium

The present study reports the physico-chemical properties of four compost based squeezed grape fruit wastes (SGFW) consisting of 60% SGFW + 40% chicken manure (including sawdust) (CMS) (v/v), 80% SGFW + 20% bean hay (BH) (v/v), 80% SGFW + 20% chicken manure (including wheat hay) (CMH) (v/v) and 100% SGFW. Results showed that 100% SGFW compost had a suitable pH and EC with 7.82 and 1.68 dSm-1, respectively. Also, 80% SGFW + 20% BH compost was very rich in organic matter similar to coco peat, but 80%SGFW + 20% CMH compost had the lowest C/N ratio (5.2). The N, P and K concentrations in SGFW composts were higher than the coco peat or vermiculite. The soluble cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+) and anions (CO23, HCO-3 ) in 60% SGFW+ 40% CMS compost were the highest among substrates. The concentrations of trace elements and heavy metals in SGFW composts were far lower than the range of phytotoxicity. On the other hand, total phenols in SGFW composts were higher than coco peat.

Adjusting radar transmitted waveform to its environment is one of the most important roles in cognitive radar;having the capability of updating transmitted waveforms in different applications is a key point. It has been shown in many studies that if the waveform is designed according to the target and clutter characteristics, the detection performance will improve significantly. The uncertainty of the target radar signatures decreases via maximizing MI and the probability of extended target detection is increases via maximizing SNR. In this paper, a waveform design approach based on maximizing both SNR and MI and with regard to target and clutter shape is presented. The detection performance for proposed waveform is compared with previous proposed waveforms. The present paper compares different scenarios of target and clutter and using the probability of detection as a cost function to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of each waveform in different scenarios which are mainly discussed in this text. The desired waveform for cognitive radar is selected based on simultaneously making compromises between SNR and MI, which plays an important role in cognitive radar systems and based on the assumption addressed in the text, the best waveform transmitted into the environment.

Influence of Paint on Steel Corrosion for Marine Applications

The majority of naval ships are constructed of mild steel. Corrosion is a major concern in a maritime environment. This particular type of material degradation has recently received more attention by the marine industry. The present work aims to investigate the effect of recent coatings used in marine ship surfaces for preventing corrosion. Experiments were performed according to standard tests to evaluate and measure the coating adhesion to steel and to measure the corrosion wear rate if any for three types of coatings. An accelerated corrosion test was conducted to duplicate in the laboratory the field corrosion performance of a product. The results indicate that all tested types of paint have resulted in a reduction in the corrosion rate compared with the uncoated steel. A minimum corrosion rate of 0.8 mm/year for the coat “Hempadur 52,140” was obtained compared to 2.1 mm/year for the uncoated steel. A microscopic examination of the corroded steel surfaces was conducted which prevailed pitting behavior with different degree. The minimum corroded surface exhibited few pitting attack in comparison to other specimens. Although the pitting attack of the surface layer (paint), one can drive a conclusion that sample surface without coating is aggressively attacked by pits.

Assessing Internal Software Quality Attributes of the Object-Oriented and Service-Oriented Software Development Paradigms: A Comparative Study

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is becoming the dominant approach for developing and organizing distributed enterprise-wide applications. Although the concepts of SOA have been extensively described in the literature and in-dustry, the effects of adopting SOA on software quality are still unclear. The aim of the paper is to analyze how adopt-ing SOA can affect software quality as opposed to the Object-Oriented (OO) paradigm and expose the differential implications of adopting both paradigms on software quality. The paper provides a brief introduction of the architectural differences between the Service-Oriented (SO) and OO paradigms and a description of internal software quality metrics used for the comparison. The effects and differences are exposed by providing a case study architected for both paradigms. The quantitative measure concluded in the paper showed that a software system developed using SOA approach provides higher reusability and lower coupling among software modules, but at the same time higher complexity than those of the OO approach. It was also found that some of the existing OO software quality metrics are inapplicable to SOA software systems. As a consequence, new metrics need to be developed specifically to SOA software systems.

Secure Hashing Algorithms (SHA) showed a significant importance in today’s information security applications. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), held a competition of three rounds to replace SHA1 and SHA2 with the new SHA-3, to ensure long term robustness of hash functions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive hardware evaluation for the final round SHA-3 candidates. The main goal of providing the hardware evaluation is to: find the best algorithm among them that will satisfy the new hashing algorithm standards defined by the NIST. This is based on a comparison made between each of the finalists in terms of security level, throughput, clock frequancey, area, power consumption, and the cost. We expect that the achived results of the comparisons will contribute in choosing the next hashing algorithm (SHA-3) that will support the security requirements of applications in todays ubiquitous and pervasive information infrastructure.

Risks of suicidality in adult patients with epilepsy

AIM: To determine the prevalence and risks of suicidality in a group of patients with epilepsy. METHODS: Included were 200 adult patients and 100 matched healthy subjects. The clinical interview using The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(4th edition), Beck Depression Inventory(2nd edition)(BDI-Ⅱ), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale(HAM-A), Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale(Y-BOCS) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Rating Scale testings were used for diagnosis and assessment of severity of psychiatric symptoms. Blood concentrations of serotonin, catecholamines and dopamine were also ***: Suicidality was reported in 35%(compared to 9% for controls), of them 80%, 72.86%, 55.71% and 52.9% had depression, anxiety, obsession and aggression respectively. Patients with suicidality had higher scores of BDI-Ⅱ(P = 0.0001), HAM-A(P = 0.0001), and Y-BOCS(P = 0.037) and lower scores of psychotic(P = 0.0001) and extroversion(P = 0.025) personality traits. Regardless the presence or absence of suicidality, patients with epilepsy had low serotonin(P = 0.006), noradrenaline(P = 0.019) and adrenaline(P = 0.0001) levels. With suicidality, significant correlations were identified between:(1) age and scores of BDI-Ⅱ(r = 0.235, P = 0.0001) and HAM-A(r = 0.241, P = 0.046);(2) age at onset and concentrations of noradrenaline(r =-0.502, P = 0.024);(3) duration of illness and scores of BDI-Ⅱ(r = 0.247, P = 0.041), Y-BOCS(r = 0.270, P = 0.025) and neurotic personality trait(r =-0.284, P = 0.018); and(4) doses of antiepileptic drugs and scores of psychotic personality traits(r =-0.495, P = 0.006 for carbamazepine; r =-0.508, P = 0.0001 for valproate).CONCLUSION: This is the first study which systematically estimated the prevalence and risks of suicidality in a homogenous group of patients with epilepsy. This study emphasizes the importance of epilepsy itself as a risk for suicidality and not its treatment.
