Effects of the Application of Different Concentrations of NaN3 for Different Times on the Morphological and Cytogenetic Characteristics of Barley （Hordeum vulgate L.） Seedlings

Sodium azide （NAN3） has been used in many biological studies as a mutagen. In the present study, the morphological and cytogenetic effects of NaN3 on barley （Hordeum vulgare L.） seedlings were investigated. Seeds of barley were treated with different concentrations of NaN3 （0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mmol/L） and applied for different periods of time （3 and 4 h）. Parameters investigated, except for the mitotic index, were determined on Days 7 and 14. Increasing concentrations of NaN3 affected germination rates on Days 7 and 14 following application for 3 and 4 h. Although the length of the roots and leaves was affected by treatment with NaN3 on Day 14 of the germination period, coleoptile length was affected by NaN3 treatment on Day 7. Increasing concentrations of NaN3 and increased treatment period decreased the mitotic index compared with the untreated control. The inhibitory effects of NaN3 on the mitotic index indicate that NaN3 can have genotoxic and mutagenic effects on barley seedlings.

Manometric findings in patients with isolated distal gastroesophageal reflux

AIM:To analyze manometric abnormalities in patients with isolated distal reflux and compare these findings in patients with erosive and non-erosive disease. METHODS:Five hundred and fifty patients who presented to the outpatient clinic of Turkiye Yuksek Ihtisas Hospital with gastroesophageal reflux disease-like symptoms were *** individual was evaluated with esophageal manometry,24-h ambulatory pH monitoring,and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Manometric findings for the patients with isolated distal reflux were compared to findings in controls who were free of reflux disorders or hypersensitive esopha- *** for isolated distal reflux patients with and without erosive reflux disease were also compared. RESULTS:Of the 550 subjects enrolled,97(17.6%, mean age 48 years)had isolated distal reflux and 100 had no abnormalities on ambulatory pH monitoring (control group,mean age 45 years).There were no significant differences between the isolated distal reflux group and control group with respect to age,body mass index,and esophageal body contraction amplitude (EBCA).Mean lower esophageal sphincter pressure was significantly higher in the control group(12.7±10.3 mmHg vs 9.6±7.4 mmHg,P=0.01).Fifty-five(56.7%) of the 97 patients with isolated distal reflux had erosive reflux *** were no statistical differences be- tween the erosive reflux disease and non-erosive reflux disease subgroups with respect to mean EBCA,lower esophageal sphincter pressure,or DeMeester ***,13%of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease had distal wave amplitudes≤30 mmHg, whereas none of the patients with non-erosive reflux disease had distal wave amplitudes in this low category. CONCLUSION:Patients with erosive and non-erosive disease present with similar manometric abnormalities. The only striking difference is the observation of very low EBCA exclusively in patients with erosive disease.

Fruit Yield and Quality, and Irrigation Water Use Efficiency of Summer Squash Drip-Irrigated with Different Irrigation Quantities in a Semi-Arid Agricultural Area

Fruit yield, yield components, fruit mineral content, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity and irrigation water use efifciency （IWUE） of summer squash responses to different irrigation quantities were evaluated with a ifeld study. Irrigations were done when the total evaporated water from a Class A pan was about 30 mm. Different irrigation quantities were adjusted using three different plant-pan coefifcients （Kcp, 100% （Kcp1）, 85% （Kcp2） and 70% （Kcp3））. Results indicated that lower irrigation quantities provided statistically lower yield and yield components. The highest seasonal fruit yield （80.0 t ha-1） was determined in the Kcp1 treatment, which applied the highest volume of irrigation water （452.9 mm）. The highest early fruit yield, average fruit weight and fruit diameter, length and number per plant were also determined in the Kcp1 treatment, with values of 7.25 t ha-1, 264.1 g, 5.49 cm, 19.95 cm and 10.92, respectively. Although the IWUE value was the highest in the Kcp1 treatment （176.6 kg ha-1 mm-1）, it was statistically similar to the value for Kcp3 treatment （157.1 kg ha-1 mm-1）. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of fruits was higher in the Kcp1 （44.27 μg gallic acid equivalents （GAE） mg-1 fresh sample） and in the Kcp2 （84.75%） treatments, respectively. Major （Na, N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S） and trace （Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn and B） mineral contents of squash fruits were the highest in the Kcp2 treatment, with the exception of P, Ca and Cu. Mineral contents and total phenolic content were signiifcantly affected by irrigation quantities, but antioxidant activity was not affected. It can be concluded that the Kcp1 treatment was the most suitable for achieving higher yield and IWUE. However, the Kcp2 treatment will be the most suitable due to the high fruit quality and relatively high yield in water shortage conditions.

Determining Crop and Pan Coefficients for Cauliflower and Red Cabbage Crops Under Cool Season Semiarid Climatic Conditions

The aim of this study was to estimate the evapotranspiration of cauliflower and red cabbage crops grown under cool season semiarid climatic conditions from Class A pan evaporation. Actual evapotranspiration （ETc） of cauliflower and red cabbage crops was calculated according to the water balance approach. Reference evapotranspiration （ETo） was calculated with FAO Penman-Monteith equation. Pan evaporation （Epan） was measured by using Class A pan. Seasonal ETc was determined as 475 mm for cauliflower and 556 nun for red cabbage. Seasonal pan coefficient （kp=ETo/Epan） was determined as 0.82, and the seasonal crop coefficient （kc=ETc/ETo） was determined as 0.84 for cauliflower and 0.83 for red cabbage. So the evapotranspiration of cauliflower and red cabbage crops was estimated as 70% Class A pan evaporation.

An Al/SiO_(2)/p-Si(MOS)capacitor with a thick(826Å)interfacial oxide layer(SiO_(2))which is formed by using the thermal oxidation method is fabricated to investigate both frequency and applied bias voltage dependences of real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant(ϵ'andϵ")and electric modulus(M'and M"),loss tangent(tanδ)and ac electrical conductivity(σ_(ac))in a wide frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz at room *** dielectric properties of the MOS capacitor are obtained using the forward and reverse bias capacitance-voltage(C–V)and conductance-voltage(G/ω–V)measurements in the applied bias voltage range 1.4–5.6 *** values ofϵ',ϵ",tanδ,M',M"and σ_(ac) are found to be strong functions of frequency and applied bias voltage in the depletion region due to excess capacitance Cex and conductance G_(ex)/ω especially at low *** experimental results show that the interfacial polarization can occur at low frequencies more easily,consequently contributing to the dispersion inϵ',ϵ",tanδ,M',M"and σ_(ac) values of the MOS *** other reason for dispersion in the dielectric properties may be attributed to a particular density distribution of interface states(Nss)localized at the Si/SiO_(2) interface,as well as space charge carriers and inhomogeneity of interfacial oxide *** increase in conductivity with increasing frequency can be attributed to the hopping type conduction *** can be concluded that theϵ',ϵ",tanδ,M',M"and σ_(ac) values of the Al/SiO_(2)/p-Si(MOS)capacitor are strongly dependent on both the frequency and applied bias voltage especially in the depletion region.

Surface-modified rice husk ash was used as an inorganic support material for immobilization of Candida antarctica lipase B.(3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane was used for surface *** of CALB was performed via both physical adsorption and *** synthesis was carried out by using these immobilized enzymes,free enzyme and Novozyme 435®.Molecular weight distribution of polymer samples was obtained by gel permeation chromatography(GPC)and chain structures of the polymer samples were observed by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance(1H-NMR).The highest monomer conversion is generally obtained by using cross-linked enzyme,around 90%.PDI values for all polymer samples were approximately 1.5 which can be considered as *** general cross-linked enzymes were better than physically adsorbed enzymes in terms of average molecular *** can be concluded that PCL can be synthesized with these immobilized enzymes with high molecular weight and low PDI values.
