Reconsideration of the origins of the pastoral nomadic economy in the Eurasian Steppe

Archaeological discoveries indicate that a variety of economic models have operated in the inland areas of *** of these models,pastoral nomadism,differs from agriculture,agro-pastoral,and settled pastoralism in terms of cattle-breeding,cultivation and *** nomadism is a livestock-breeding management mode of production,in which the stock is fed by uninterrupted moving in a large geographical *** Eurasian Steppe,which includes the cold forest-steppe area in the north and the semi-arid desert-steppe in the south,is the major region in which the ancient nomadic population *** of the absence of both intrinsic motivation and external pressure for the transition to pastoral nomadism,early animal husbandry economy in the forest-steppe area could not have developed into the initial pastoral nomadic economy;instead,the pastoral nomadic economy emerged from the agro-pastoral economy in the semi-arid *** agro-pastoral people were forced to minimize the scale of agriculture and sedentary pastoralism and to turn to a nomadic lifestyle,with the internal cause being a shortage of feed resources caused by expansion of the human population and livestock,with the added external pressure of climatic and environmental *** archaeological findings,the eastern Tianshan area in xinjiang,China,was a major region for the emergence of the early pastoral nomadic *** main evidence for this conclusion is a series of pastoral nomadic settlement sites in the northern and southern piedmonts of the Tianshan Mountains,which display settlement conditions,resources and environments entirely different from those of agricultural and agro-pastoral settlements elsewhere.

Effects of starvation and hormones on DNA synthesis in silk gland cells of the silkworm, Bombyx moil

Silk gland cells of silkworm larvae undergo multiple cycles of endomitosis for the synthesis of silk proteins during the spinning phase. In this paper, we analyzed the endomitotic DNA synthesis of silk gland cells during larval development, and found that it was a periodic fluctuation, increasing during the vigorous feeding phase and being gradually inhibited in the next molting phase. That means it might be activated by a self- regulating process after molting. The expression levels of cyclin E, cdtl and pcna were consistent with these developmental changes. Moreover, we further examined whether these changes in endomitotic DNA synthesis resulted from feeding or hormonal stimulation. The results showed that DNA synthesis could be inhibited by starvation and re-activated by re-feeding, and therefore appears to be dependent on nutrition. DNA synthesis was suppressed by in vivo treatment with 20-hydroxyecdysone （20E）. However, there was no effect on DNA synthesis by in vitro 20E treatment or by either in vivo or in vitro juvenile hormone treatment. The levels of Akt and 4E-BP phosphorylation in the silk glands were also reduced by starvation and in vivo treatment with 20E. These results indicate that the activation of endomitotic DNA synthesis during the intermolt stages is related to feeding and DNA synthesis is inhibited indirectly by 20E.

Mucosa repair mechanisms of Tong-xie-yao-Fang mediated by CRH-R2 in murine,dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis

AIM To explore the significance of corticotropin-releasing hormone(CRH)-receptor(R)2 in mucosal healing of dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)-induced colitis and the effect of Tong-xie-yao-Fang(TXYF) on CRH-R2 expression and *** Ulcerative colitis was induced in mice by administration of 3%(w/v) DSS for 7 d. Once the model was established,mice were administered urocortin-2(30 μg/kg), a peptide which binds exclusively to CRH-R2, or various doses of aqueous TXYF extracts(2.8-11.2 g/kg), a CRH-R2 antagonist Astressin(Ast)2B(20 μg/kg), Ast2B + Ucn2, or Ast2B with various doses of aqueous TXYF extracts for 9 d. Colonic mucosal permeability was then evaluated by measuring the fluorescence intensity in serum. The colitis disease activity index(DAI), histology, body weight loss and colon length were assessed to evaluate the condition of colitis. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase d UTP nick-end labeling was used to detect apoptosis of the intestinal epithelial cells. The expression level of Ki-67 represented the proliferation of colonic epithelial cells and was detected by immunohistochemistry. The expression levels of inflammation cytokines IL-6, TNF-α and CXCL-1 were examined in colon tissues using real-time PCR and ELISA *** Compared with the DSS group, mice treated with the CRH-R2 antagonist Ast2B showed greater loss of body weight, shorter colon lengths(4.90 ± 0.32 vs 6.21 ± 0.34 cm, P < 0.05), and higher DAI(3.61 ± 0.53 vs 2.42 ± 0.32, P < 0.05) and histological scores(11.50 ± 1.05 vs 8.33 ± 1.03, P < 0.05). Additionally, the Ast2B group showed increased intestinal permeability(2.76 ± 0.11 μg/mL vs 1.47 ± 0.11 μg/mL, P < 0.001), improved secretion of inflammatory cytokines in colon tissue, and reduced colonic epithelial cell proliferation(4.97 ± 4.25 vs 22.51 ± 8.22, P < 0.05). Characterization of neurovascular compression in facial neuralgia patients by 3D high-resolution MRI and image fusion technique

Objective:To describe the anatomical characteristics and patterns of neurovascular compression (NVC) in patients suffering trigeminal neuralgia(TN) by 3D high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) method and image fusion ***:The anatomic structure of trigeminal nerve,brain stem and blood vessel was observed in 100 consecutive TN patients by 3D high resolution MRI(3D SPGR,contrast-enhanced T1 3D MP-RAGE and T2/T1 3D FIESTA). The 3D image sources were fused and visualized using 3D DOCTOR ***:One or several NVC sites,which usually appeared 0-9.8 mm away from brain stem,were found on the symptomatic side in 93%of the TN *** cerebellar artery was involved in 76%(71/93) of these *** other vessels including antero-inferior cerebellar artery,vertebral artery, basilar artery and veins also contributed to the occurrence of *** NVC sites were found to be located in the proximal segment in 42%of these cases(39/93) and in the distal segment in 45% (42/93).Nerve dislocation or distortion was observed in 32%(30/93).Conclusions:Various 3D high resolution MRI methods combined with the image fusion technique could provide pathologic anatomic information for the diagnosis and treatment of TN.

The role of statins in erectile dysfunction： a systematic review and meta-analysis

To evaluate the effect of statins for erectile dysfunction （ED）, a systematic review of the literature was conducted in the Cochrane Library, Embase and PubMed from the inception of each database to June 2013. Only randomized controlled trials （RCTs） comparing treatment for ED with statins were identified. Placebo RCTs with the International Index of Erectile Function （IIEF） as the outcome measure were eligible for meta-analysis. A total of seven RCTs including two statins with a total of 586 patients strictly met our criteria for systematic review and five of them qualified for the meta-analysis. A meta-analysis using a random effects model showed that statins were associated with a significant increase in IIEF-5 scores （mean difference （MD）： 3.27; 95% confidential interval （CI）：1.51 to 5.02; P〈 0.01） and an overall improvement of lipid profiles including total cholesterol （MD： -1.08; 95% Ch -1.68 to -0.48; P 〈 0.01）, low-density lipoprotein （LDL） cholesterol （MD： -1.43; 95% Ch -2.07 to -0.79; P 〈 0.01）, high-density lipoprotein （HDL） cholesterol （MD： 0.24; 95% Ch 0.13 to 0.35; P〈 0.01） and triglycerides （TGs）（MD. -0.55; 95% Ch -0.61 to -0.48; P 〈 0.01）. In summary, our study revealed positive consequences of these lipid-lowering drugs on erectile function, especially for nonresponders to phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors （PDE51s）. However, it has been reported that statin therapy may reduce levels of testosterone and aggravate symptoms of ED. Therefore, larger, well-designed RCTs are needed to investigate the double-edged role of statins in the treatment of ED.

A FIASCO-Based Approach for Detection and Diagnosis of Puccinia graminis *** in China

Stem or black rust of wheat, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks.＆E. Henn. （Pgt）, has historically caused severe losses to wheat （Triticum aestivum L.） production worldwide. In the Fujian and Guangdong provinces of China, six moderate-to-severe epidemics of wheat stem rust have occurred, which caused destructive losses of wheat between 1949 and 1966, although these were brought under control by integrated management. A rapid and reliable detection of the pathogen will contribute to the accurate forecast and seasonal control of this disease. The objective of this study was to develop a diagnostic molecular marker generated from simple sequence repeats （SSR） for the early rapid identiifcation of P. graminis. The genomic DNA of P. graminis, Puccinia striiformis, Puccinia triticina and seven other species was ampliifed by a pair of SSR primers generated by the FIASCO （fast isolation by AFLP sequences containing repeats） enrichment protocol. The primer set Pgtw （f）/Pgtw （r） generated a polymorphic pattern displaying a 330-bp DNA fragment speciifc for P. graminis whereas no DNA fragment was obtained from other non-target wheat fungal pathogens. The detection limit of the primer was 1 ng DNA in a 25-mL PCR reaction. The SSR markers of P. graminis can also be used to detect the presence of latent hyphae in Pgt-infected wheat leaves as early as 30 h post-inoculation. A rapid approach to distinguish P. graminis from similar pathogenic fungi would be anticipated in further study.

Noninvasive Diagnostic Technique for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Based on Features of Tongue Images

Objective:To investigate a new noninvasive diagnostic model for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) based on features of tongue ***:Healthy controls and volunteers confirmed to have NAFLD by liver ultrasound were recruited from China-Japan Friendship Hospital between September 2018 and May 2019,then the anthropometric indexes and sampled tongue images were *** tongue images were labeled by features,based on a brief protocol,without knowing any other clinical data,after a series of corrections and data *** algorithm was trained on images using labels and several anthropometric indexes for inputs,utilizing machine learning ***,a logistic regression algorithm and a decision tree model were constructed as 2 diagnostic models for ***:A total of 720 subjects were enrolled in this study,including 432 patients with NAFLD and 288 healthy *** them,482 were randomly allocated into the training set and 238 into the validation *** diagnostic model based on logistic regression exhibited excellent performance:in validation set,it achieved an accuracy of 86.98%,sensitivity of 91.43%,and specificity of 80.61%;with an area under the curve(AUC) of 0.93 [95% confidence interval(CI) 0.68–0.98].The decision tree model achieved an accuracy of 81.09%,sensitivity of 91.43%,and specificity of 66.33%;with an AUC of 0.89(95% CI 0.66–0.92) in validation ***:The features of tongue images were associated with *** the 2 diagnostic models,which would be convenient,noninvasive,lightweight,rapid,and inexpensive technical references for early screening,can accurately distinguish NAFLD and are worth further study.
