A high-entropy spinel ceramic oxide as the cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells

A high-entropy ceramic oxide is used as the cathode for the first time for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells(H-SOFCs).The Fe_(0.6)Mn_(0.6)Co_(0.6)Ni_(0.6)Cr_(0.6)O_(4)(FMCNC)high-entropy spinel oxide has been successfully prepared,and the in situ chemical stability test demonstrates that the FMCNC material has good stability against CO_(2).The first-principles calculation indicates that the high-entropy structure enhances the properties of the FMCNC material that surpasses their individual components,leading to lower O_(2)adsorption energy for FMCNC than that for the individual *** HSOFC using the FMCNC cathode reaches an encouraging peak power density(PPD)of 1052 mW·cm^(-2)at 700℃,which is higher than those of the H-SOFCs reported *** comparison was made between the high-entropy FMCNC cathode and the traditional Mn_(1.6)Cu_(1.4)O_(4)(MCO)spinel cathode without the high-entropy structure,revealing that the formation of the high-entropy material allows the enhanced protonation ability as well as the movement of the O p-band center closer to the Fermi level,thus improving the cathode catalytic *** a result,the high-entropy FMCNC has a much-decreased polarization resistance of 0.057Ω·cm^(2)at 700℃,which is half of that for the traditional MCO spinel cathode without the high-entropy *** excellent performance of the FMCNC cell indicates that the high-entropy design makes a new life for the spinel oxide as the cathode for HSOFCs,offering a novel and promising route for the development of high-performance materials for H-SOFCs.

Taking advantage of Li-evaporation in LiCoO_(2) as cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells

LiCoO_(2),a widely used electrode material for Li-ion batteries,was found to be suitable as a cathode material for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells(H-SOFCs).Although the evaporation of Li in LiCoO_(2) was detrimental to the Li-ion battery performance,the Li-evaporation was found to be beneficial for the *** partial evaporation of Li in the LiCoO_(2) material preparation procedure led to the in-situ formation of the LiCoO_(2)+Co_(3)O_(4) *** to the cell using the pure phase LiCoO_(2) cathode that only generated moderate fuel cell performance,the H-SOFCs using the LiCoO_(2)+Co_(3)O_(4) cathode showed a high fuel cell performance of 1160 mW·cm^(-2) at 700℃,suggesting that the formation of Co_(3)O_(4) was critical for enhancing the performance of the LiCoO_(2) *** first-principles calculation gave insights into the performance improvements,indicating that the in-situ formation of Co_(3)O_(4) due to the Li-evaporation in LiCoO_(2) could dramatically decrease the formation energy of oxygen vacancies that is essential for the high cathode *** evaporation of Li in LiCoO_(2),which is regarded as a drawback for the Li-ion batteries,is demonstrated to be advantageous for the H-SOFCs,offering new selections of cathode candidates for the H-SOFCs.

Nb-doped PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(2)O_(6)-based perovskite cathode with improved oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability for solid oxide fuel cells

The performance of a solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC)is strongly associated with the activity and durability of the cathode,where the oxygen reduction reaction *** this study,we report our findings in the development of an Nb-doped PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(2)O_(6-δ)(PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(2-x)Nb_(x)O_(6-δ),x=0,0.025,0.05,and 0.1,denoted as PBCCNx)perovskite composite as the SOFC *** of X-ray diffraction(XRD)patterns and energy-dispersive transmission electron microscopy(TEM-EDS)images suggest that after being treated at 950℃ in air,PBCCN0.05 mainly contains phases of Ca-and Nb-doped PrBaCo2O6-δdouble perovskite,PrCoO_(3) perovskite with Ca and Nb doping,and Ba_(3)Ca_(1.18)Nb_(1.82)O_(9-δ).When evaluated as an SOFC cathode,the PBCCN0.05 mixture has shown a low polarization resistance of 0.0074Ω·cm^(2)at 800℃ in La_(0.8)Sr0.2Ga_(0.8)Mg_(0.2)O_(3)electrolyte symmetrical ***,anode-supported single cells with a configuration of Ni-Zr_(0.84)Y_(0.16)O_(2-δ)(YSZ)/YSZ/Gd_(0.1)Ce0.9O_(2-δ)/PBCCN0.05 display high electrochemical performance,with a peak power density of 1.81 W·cm^(-2)and a reasonable durability of 100 h at 800℃.PBCCN_(0.05)possesses a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies,a faster oxygen surface adsorption-dissociation rate,and an increased mass ratio of PrCoO_(3) perovskite with Ca and Nb doping compared to PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(2)O_(6)-δwithout Nb doping.

Visiting the roles of Sr-or Ca-doping on the oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability of a perovskite cathode for proton conducting solid oxide fuel cells

While double perovskites of PrBaCo_(2)O_(6)(PBC)have been extensively developed as the cathodes for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells(H-SOFCs),the effects of Sr-or Ca-doping at the A site on the activity and stability of the oxygen reduction reaction are yet to be fully ***,the effect of A-site doping on the oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability has been studied by evaluating the performance of both symmetrical and single *** is shown that Ca-doped PBC(PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(2)O_(6),PBCC)shows a slightly smaller polarization resistance(0.076Ωcm^(2))than that(0.085Ωcm^(2))of Sr-doped PBC(PrBa0.8Sr0.2Co2O6,PBSC)at 700◦C in wet ***,the degradation rate of PBCC is 0.0003Ωcm^(2)h^(−1)(0.3%h−1)in 100 h,about 1/10 of that of PBSC at 700◦C in wet *** addition,it is also confirmed that single cells with PBCC cathode show higher peak power density(1.22Wcm^(−2)vs.1.08Wcm^(−2)at 650◦C)and better durability(degradation rate of 0.1%h^(−1)vs.0.13%h^(−1))than those with PBSC *** distribution of relaxation time analyses suggests that the better stability of the PBCC electrode may come from the fast and stable surface oxygen exchange process in the medium frequency range of the electrochemical impedance spectrum.

Entropy engineering design of high-performing lithiated oxide cathodes for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells

A new medium entropy material LiCo_(0.25)Fe_(0.25)Mn_(0.2)5Ni_(0.2)5O_(2)(LCFMN)is proposed as a cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells(H-SOFCs).Unlike traditional LiXO_(2)(X=Co,Fe,Mn,Ni)lithiated oxides,which have issues like phase impurity,poor chemical compatibility,or poor fuel cell performance,the new LCFMN material mitigates these problems,allowing for the successful preparation of pure phase LCFMN with good chemical and thermal compatibility to the ***,the entropy engineering strategy is found to weaken the covalence bond between the metal and oxygen in the LCFMN lattice,favoring the creation of oxygen vacancies and increasing cathode *** a result,the H-SOFC with the LCFMN cathode achieves an unprecedented fuel cell output of 1803 mW·cm^(−2)at 700℃,the highest ever reported for H-SOFCs with lithiated oxide *** addition to high fuel cell performance,the LCFMN cathode permits stable fuel cell operation for more than 450 h without visible degradation,demonstrating that LCFMN is a suitable cathode choice for H-SOFCs that combining high performance and good stability.

Promoting near-infrared photocatalytic activity of carbon-doped carbon nitride via solid alkali activation

Ultrabroad spectral absorption is required for semiconductor photocatalysts utilized for solar-to-chemical energy *** light response range can be extended by element doping,but the photocatalytic performance is generally not enhanced *** we present a solid alkali activation strategy to synthesize near-infrared(NIR)light-activated carbon-doped polymeric carbon nitride(A-cPCN)by combining the copolymerization of melamine and 1,3,5-trimesic *** prepared A-cPCN is highly crystalline with a narrowed bandgap and enhanced efficiency in the separation of photogenerated electrons and *** irradiation with NIR light(780 nm≥λ≥700 nm),A-cPCN shows an excellent photocatalytic activity for H_(2)generation from water with rate of 165µmol g^(−1)h^(−1),and the photo-redox activity for H_(2)O_(2)production(109µmol g^(−1)h^(−1))from H_(2)O and O_(2),whereas no observed photocatalytic activity over pure *** NIR photocatalytic activity is due to carbon doping,which leads to the formation of an interband level,and the alkali activation that achieved shrinking the transfer distance of *** current synergistic strategy may open insights to fabricate other carbon-nitrogen-based photocatalysts for enhanced solar energy capture and conversion.

Pyrimidine donor induced built-in electric field between melon chains in crystalline carbon nitride to facilitate excitons dissociation

The strong intrinsic Coulomb interactions of Frenkel excitons in crystalline carbon nitride(CCN) greatly limits their dissociation into electrons and holes, resulting in unsatisfactory charges separation and photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we propose a strategy to facilitate excitons dissociation by molecular regulation induced built-in electric field(BIEF). The electron-rich pyrimidine-ring into CCN changes the charge density distribution over heptazine-rings to induce BIEF between melon chains. Such BIEF is sufficient to overcome the considerable exciton binding energy(EBE) and reduce it from 38.4 meV to 16.4 meV,increasing the excitons dissociation efficiency(EDE) from 21.5% to 51.9%. Our results establish a strategy to facilitate excitons dissociation through molecular regulation induced BIEF, targeting the intrinsic high EBE and low EDE of polymer photocatalysts.

Reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells(R-PCECs)demonstrate great feasibility for efficient energy storage and *** critical challenge for the development of R-PCECs is the design of novel air electrodes with the characteristics of high catalytic activity and acceptable ***,we report a donor doping of Hf into the B-site of a cobalt-based double perovskite with a nominal formula of PrBa_(0.8)Ca_(0.2)Co_(1.9)Hf_(0.1)O_(5tδ)(PBCCHf_(0.1)),which is naturally reconfigured to a double perovskite PrBa_(0.8-x)Ca_(0.2)Co_(1.9)Hf_(0.1)-xO5tδ(PBCCHf_(0.1)-x)backbone and nano-sized BaHfO3(BHO)on the surface of PBCCHf_(0.1)*** air electrode demonstrates enhanced catalytic activity and durability(a stable polarization resistance of 0.269Ωcm2 for~100 h at 600℃),due likely to the fast surface exchange process and bulk diffusion *** employed as an air electrode of R-PCECs,a cell with PBCCHf_(0.1) air electrode demonstrates encouraging performances in modes of the fuel cell(FC)and electrolysis(EL)at 600℃:a peak power density of 0.998 W cm^(-2)and a current density of1.613 A cm^(-2)at 1.3 V(with acceptable Faradaic efficiencies).More importantly,the single-cell with PBCCHf_(0.1) air electrode demonstrates good cycling stability,switching back and forth from FC mode to EL mode0.5 A cm^(-2)for 200 h and 50 cycles.

Tailoring Sr_(2)Fe_(1.5)Mo_(0.5)O_(6-δ)with Sc as a new single-phase cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells

Sc-doped Sr_(2)Fe_(1.5)Mo_(0.5)O_(6-δ)(SFMSc)was successfully synthesized by partially substituting Mo in Sr_(2)Fe_(1.5)Mo_(0.5)O_(6-δ)(SFM)with Sc,resulting in a higher proton diffusion rate in the resultant SFMSc *** calculations showed that doping Sc into SFM lowered the oxygen vacancy formation energy,reduced the energy barrier for proton migration in the oxide,and increased the catalytic activity for oxygen reduction ***,a proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cell(H-SOFC)with a single-phase SFMSc cathode demonstrated significantly higher cell performance than that of cell based on an Sc-free SFM cathode,achieving 1258 mW cm^(−2)at 700℃.The performance also outperformed that of many other H-SOFCs based on single-phase cobalt-free ***,no trade-off between fuel cell performance and material stability was *** SFMSc material demonstrated good stability in both the CO_(2)-containing atmosphere and the fuel cell *** combination of high performance and outstanding stability suggests that SFMSc is an excellent cathode material for H-SOFCs.
