Are newborn rat-derived neural stem cells more sensitive to lead neurotoxicity?

Lead ion （Pb2＋） has been proven to be a neurotoxin due to its neurotoxicity on mammalian nervous system, especially for the developing brains of juveniles. however, many reported studies involved the negative effects of Pb2＋ on adult neural cells of humans or other mammals, only few of which have examined the effects of Pb2＋ on neural stem cells. The purpose of this study was to reveal the biological effects of Pb2＋from lead acetate [Pb （0H30OO）2] on viability, proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells derived from the hippocampus of newborn rats aged 7 days and adult rats aged 90 days, respectively. This study was carried out in three parts. In the first part, 3-（4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl）-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay （MTT viability assay） was used to detect the effects of Pb2＋ on the cell viability of passage 2 hippocampal neural stem cells after 48-hour exposure to 0-200 pM Pb2＋. In the second part, 10 pM bromodeoxyuridine was added into the culture medium of passage 2 hippocampal neural stem cells after 48-hour exposure to 0- 200 pM Pb2＋, followed by immunocytochemical staining with anti-bromodeoxyuridine to demonstrate the effects of Pb2＋ on cell proliferation. In the last part, passage 2 hippocampal neural stem cells were allowed to grow in the differentiation medium with 0-200 pM Pb2＋. Immunocytochemical staining with anti-microtubule-associated protein 2 （a neuron marker）, anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein （an astrocyte marker）, and anti-RIP （an oligodendrocyte marker） was performed to detect the differentiation commitment of affected neural stem cells after 6 days. The data showed that Pb2~ inhibited not only the viability and proliferation of rat hippocampal neural stem cells, but also their neuronal and oligodendrocyte differentiation in vitro. A cross-sectional study on compliance with topical glaucoma medication and its associated socioeconomic burden for a Chinese population

Can cold dark matter paradigm explain the central-surface-densities relation?

Recently, a very strong correlation between the central surface density of stars and dynamical mass in 135 disk galaxies has been obtained. It has been shown that this central-surface-densities relation agrees very well with Modified Newtonian Dynamics（MOND）. In this article, we show that if we assume the baryons have an isothermal distribution and dark matter exists, then it is possible to derive by means of the Jeans equation an analytic central-surface-densities relation connecting dark matter and baryons that agrees with the observed relation. We find that the observed central-surface-densities relation can also be accommodated in the context of dark matter provided the latter is described by an isothermal profile. Therefore, the observed relation is consistent with not only MOND.

Does the gamma-ray signal from the central Milky Way indicate Sommerfeld enhancement of dark matter annihilation?

Recently, some studies showed that the GeV gamma-ray excess signal from the central Milky Way can be explained by the annihilation of -40 GeV dark matter through the bb channel. Based on the morphology of the gamma-ray flux, the best-fit inner slope of the dark matter density profile is γ = 1.26. however, recent analyses of the Milky Way dark matter profile favor γ = 0.6 - 0.8. In this article, we show that the GeV gamma-ray excess can also be explained by the Sommerfeld-enhanced dark matter annihilation through the bb channel with γ = 0.85 - 1.05. We constrain the parameters of the Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation by using data from Fermi-LAT. We also show that the predicted gamma-ray fluxes emitted from dwarf galaxies generally satisfy recent upper limits on gamma-ray fluxes detected by Fermi-LAT.

Aerosol-assisted rapid synthesis of SnS-C composite microspheres as anode material for Na-ion batteries

SnS-C composite powders were prepared through one-pot spray pyrolysis for use as anode materials for Na-ion batteries. C microspheres with uniformly attached cubic-like SnS nanocrystals, which have an amorphous C coating layer, were formed at a preparation temperature of 900 ℃. The initial discharge capacities of the bare SnS and SnS-C composite powders at a current density of 500 mA·g^-1 were 695 and 740 mA·h·g^-1, respectively. The discharge capacities after 50 cycles and the capacity retentions measured from the second cycle of the bare SnS and SnS-C composite powders were 25 and 433 mA.h.g-1 and 5 and 89%, respectively. The prepared SnS-C composite powders with high reversible capacities and good cycle performance can be used as Na-ion battery anode materials.

Enhanced Li^＋ storage properties of few-layered MoS2-C composite microspheres embedded with Si nanopowder

A few-layered MoS2-C composite material is studied as a supporting material for silicon nanopowder. Microspheres of the few-layered MoS2-C composite embedded with 30 wt.% Si nanopowder are prepared by one-pot spray pyrolysis. The Si nanopowder particles with high capacity are completely surrounded by the few-layered MoS2-C composite matrix. The discharge capacities of the MoS2-C composite microspheres with and without 30 wt.% Si nanopowder after 100 cycles are 1,020 and 718 mAh·g^-1 at a current density of 1,000 mA·g^-1 respectively. The spherical morphology of the MoS2-C composite microspheres embedded with Si nanopowder is preserved even after 100 cycles because of their high structural stability during cycling. The MoS2-C composite layer prevents the formation of unstable solid-electrolyte interface （SEI） layers on the Si nanopowder. Furthermore, as the MoS2-C composite matrix exhibits high capacity and excellent cycling performance, these characteristics are also reflected in the MoS2-C composite microspheres embedded with 30 wt.% Si nanopowder.

To the Editor:Extraovarian primary peritoneal carcinoma(EOPPC)is an uncommon malignancy with many similarities to epithelial ovarian carcinoma in histological,clinical,and etiological aspects[1].This phenomenon is explained by their common embryonal origin,in which both develop from the coelomic epithelium in the early embryological *** their similarities,the incidence of EOPPC is significantly lower than that of epithelial ovarian carcinoma(6.78 cases per million vs.120.5 cases per million)[1].
