Organic dye pollutants present in wastewater pose a significant global challenge. Among pollutants, the synthetic dye Rhodamine B(RB) stands out due to its non-biodegradable nature and associated neurotoxic, carcinogenic,and respiratory irritant properties. Extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of adsorption and photodegradation techniques for the removal of RB from wastewater. While adsorption and advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) have gained considerable attention for their effectiveness in recent years, the underlying behaviors and mechanisms of these technologies remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a comprehensive of recent research progress in this domain is imperative to clarify the basics and present the up-to-date *** review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamentals, advancements, and future trajectories of RB wastewater treatment technologies, mainly encompassing adsorption and photodegradation. This work starts with a general introduction of outlining the sources, toxicity, and diverse applicable removal strategies. Subsequently, it thoroughly examines crucial techniques within non-photochemical, photochemical, and adsorption technologies, such as UV light assisted AOP, catalyst assisted AOP, ozonation, Fenton system, electrochemical AOP, and adsorption technology. The primary objective is to furnish a broad overview of these techniques,elucidating their effectiveness, limitations, and applicability. Following this, the review encapsulates state-of-theart computational simulations pertaining to RB adsorption and interactions with clays and other ***, it delves into column adsorption of RB dye, and elucidates various influencing factors, including bed height, feed concentration, pollutant(RB) feeding or flow rate, and column regeneration. Biomass Estimation Models for Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) Plantations in Ghana, West Africa

The role of cocoa systems for climate change mitigation and adaptation has increased substantially because of their capability to trap carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and deposited in the cocoa trees as carbon. Development of aboveground biomass (AGB) models for cocoa plantations is crucial for accurate estimation of carbon stocks in the cocoa systems, however, allometric models for estimating AGB for cocoa plantations remain a challenge for cocoa producing countries in Sub-Saharan Africa especially Ghana. The aim of this study is to develop allometric model that can be used for the estimation of AGB for cocoa plantations in Ghana, as well as West Africa. Destructive sampling was carried out on 110 cocoa trees obtained from the cocoa rehabilitation exercise for the development of the allometric models. Diameter at breast height (D), total tree height (H) and wood density (ρ) were used as predictors to develop seven models. The best model was selected based on coefficient of determination (R2), index of agreement (IA), root mean squared error (RMSE), bias (E%), mean absolute error (MAE) and corrected akaike information criterion (AICC) and percentage relative standard error (PRSE) of the estimated parameters. The selected model, which was the one with the predictors D and ρ, was given as;AGB = 0.7217ρ(D2)0.921. It was compared with the Yuliasmara et al. (2009) cocoa model using equivalence test and paired sample t-test. The two models were found to be equivalent within ±10% of their mean predictions (p < 0.0001) for one-tailed tests for both lower and upper limits, while the paired sample t-test rejected the null hypothesis with mean difference of 14.16 kg between the two models. This study is significant because it has provided a model to estimate AGB for the cocoa plantations in Ghana which is very important for the Ghana Cocoa-Forest REDD+ Programme and also can be used by other West African cocoa producing

The development of bio-sourced materials is essential to ensuring sustainable construction;it is considered a locomotive of the green ***,it is an abundant material in our country,to which very little attention is being *** work aims to valorize the waste of the trunks of banana trees to be used in ***,the physicochemical properties of the fiber,such as the percentage of crystallization and its morphology,have been determined by X-ray diffraction tests and scanning electron microscopy to confirm the potential and the impact of the mode of drying on the quality of the banana fibers,with the purpose to promote the use of this material in ***,the results obtained with the gypsum matrix allowed us to note a preponderant improvement in the composite’s thermal properties thanks to the variation of the banana fiber ***,the impact of the nature of the banana fiber distribution(either fiber mixed in matrix or fiber series model)on the flexural and compressive strengths of the composites was *** results obtained indicate that the insulation gain reaches up to 40%.It depends on the volume fraction and type of distribution of the banana ***,the thermal inertia of the composites developed,represented by thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity,was *** indicate a gain of 40%and 25%,respectively,in terms of thermal diffusivity and thermal effusivity of the developed composites compared to plaster *** the mechanical properties,the flexural strength depends on the percentage of the volume fraction of banana fibers used,and it can reach 20%more than the flexural strength of plaster;nevertheless,there is a significant loss in terms of the compressive strength of the studied *** results obtained are confirmed by the microstructure of the fiber *** fact,the morphology of the banana fibers was improved by the drying *** reduces the amorphous area an

Synthesis and Characterization of Nitrosonaphthol Dyes Based on 1-Naphthol and Their Dyeing Properties on Tanned Leather

Nitrosonaphthol dyes and other corresponding analogues were synthesised from 1-Naphthol. The dyes were applied onto chrome and vegetable tanned leather upon characterization. The results indicate that the dye bath exhaustion was better on chrome tanned leather than on vegetable tanned leather. This may be attributed to the chelating effect of chrome on leather and the higher temperature of dyeing the chrome tanned leather compared with the vegetable tanned leather. The fastness properties of the dyes of washing ranging from (3 - 5), perspiration on acid (4 - 5), alkaline (4 - 5) and light (4 - 7) were impressive on both vegetable and chrome tanned leather respectively.

Synthesis of Some Azo Disperse Dyes from 1-Substituted 2-Hydroxy-6-pyridone Derivatives and Their Colour Assessment on Polyester Fabric

The synthesis of a series of 3-(p-substituted phenylazo)-6-pyridone dyes which is suitable for the dyeing of polyester fabrics, is described. Visible absorption spectra of the dyes were examined in various solvents and the compounds in solution exhibited hydrazone-common anion equilibrium. The electronic absorption spectra cover a λmax range of 404 - 464 nm in DMF at uniformly high absorption intensity between 5.33 × 104 - 8.55 × 104 lmol–1cm–1 and gave bright intense hues of yellow to orange on polyester fabrics. The colour parameters of the dyed fabrics were measured and the dyes have excellent exhaustion between 72% - 79% for polyester fabrics, more intense and of very good fastness properties on polyester fabrics. The remarkable degree of levelness and brightness after washing is indicative of good penetration and excellent affinity of these dyes for the polyester fabric.

The Synthesis of Diaminoanthraquinone Coloured Cross Linked Epoxy Resins and Their Application in Paint and Selected Polymers

Novel polymeric pigments were synthesized in xylene by cross linked epoxy resin with 1,4 and 1,5-diaminoanthraquinones, by varying weight fractions from 5% to 20% of the diaminoanthraquinone derivatives. FTIR, UV and solubility tests were carried out. The pigments were then used to colour PLA, PMMA, PE and also in emulsion paints using polyvinyl alcohol as binder. Their light fastness, surface drying time and surface hardening time were assessed. It was found that λmax of the 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone shifted towards longer wavelength after the cross linkage, in contrast to the 1,5-diaminoanthraquinone which suffered a blue shift. However in all the cases, the λmax was not affected by the weight fractions of the anthraquinones, but the absorptivity coefficients was significantly increased as the weight fractions of the anthraquinones increased. The light fastness properties of the coloured plastics varied from 4 to 7, indicating a trend of increase with the weight fractions of the anthraquinones. Similar observations were seen with the emulsion paints produced. In all the cases, the 1,4-diaminoanthraqunione produced better result.

Sero-Prevalence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) among High Risk Groups in Abuja, Nigeria

Measurement of HIV prevalence among the general population as well as among specific sub-groups who are at high risk of infection is crucial for planning and for providing health care for those who are infected. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of HIV-1 infection among high risk groups in Abuja. The testing for the presence of HIV antibodies was carried out using Determine®HIV-1/2 Test Cards (Inverness Medical, Japan), UnigoldTM kit (Trinity Biotech, Ireland) and Stat Pak®HIV-1/2 (Chembio Diagnostic Systems, Inc. USA). A total of 1587 high risk persons were screened for HIV-1, 739 (46.6%) were males while 848 (53.4%) were females. 261 (16.4%) tested HIV-1 positive, out of which 74 (5.3%) were males and 190 (11.1%) were females. This study indicates that the incidence of HIV-1 is higher among the females. Prevalence is higher within the age range of 26 - 30 years (5.17%) and highest prevalence was observed within the age range of 31 - 35 years in males (1.32%) and of 26 - 30 years in females (3.91%). Commercial sex workers had the highest prevalence of HIV-1 (7.01%), while Commercial Motorcyclists had the least (2.02%) (p ≤ 0.05). This study has shown that there are local sub-epidemics of HIV infection in Abuja.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Colorants Derived from 1,4-Diamino Anthraquinone Polyamides

In this study, the polycondensation products of a diamine anthraquinone (1,4-diamino anthraquinone) and some aliphatic diacids with different methylene numbers were synthesised. Their UV-visible spectroscopy and thermal properties were then characterised. The synthesis was achieved by reacting equimolar solutions of the amine and the acid halides. The structure and thermal properties of the products were characterised. FT-IR Spectra of all the three products revealed the formation of amide due to the presence of strong bands at 1565 and 3390 cm?1 assignable to C=O stretching and N-H vibrations. Differential Scanning Calorimetry revealed high melting exotherms for the products. Thermogravimetry revealed moderate thermal stabilities for Poly NAM and Poly NAS and low thermal stability for Poly NAA which indicated 5.9%, 7.1% and 61.2% weight losses at 285℃, 285℃ and 374℃ for the three products respectively. The wavelengths of maximum absorbance for the dye samples are 601.5, 591 and 589 nm respectively with absorptivity coefficients (a1cm1% ) of 11640000, 11610000 and 11560000 respectively.
