A metasurface-based light-to-microwave transmitter for hybrid wireless communications

Signal conversion plays an important role in many applications such as communication,sensing,and *** signal conversion between optical and microwave frequencies is a crucial step to construct hybrid communication systems that combine both optical and microwave wireless technologies to achieve better features,which are highly desirable in the future wireless ***,such a signal conversion process typically requires a complicated relay to perform multiple operations,which will consume additional hardware/time/energy ***,we report a light-to-microwave transmitter based on the time-varying and programmable metasurface integrated with a high-speed photoelectric detection circuit into a *** a transmitter can convert a light intensity signal to two microwave binary frequency shift keying signals by using the dispersion characteristics of the metasurface to implement the frequency division *** illustrate the metasurface-based transmitter,a hybrid wireless communication system that allows dual-channel data transmissions in a light-to-microwave link is demonstrated,and the experimental results show that two different videos can be transmitted and received simultaneously and *** metasurface-enabled signal conversion solution may enrich the functionalities of metasurfaces,and could also stimulate new information-oriented applications.

Programmable metasurfaces enable real-time control of electromagnetic waves in a digital coding manner,which are suitable for implementing time-domain metasurfaces with strong harmonic manipulation ***,the time-domain metasurfaces are usually realized by adopting the wired electrical control method,which is effective and robust,but there are still some ***,we propose a light-controllable time-domain digital coding metasurface consisting of a full-polarization dynamic metasurface and a high-speed photoelectric detection circuit,from which the microwave reflection spectra are manipulated by time-varying light signals with periodic phase *** demonstrated,the light-controllable timedomain digital coding metasurface is illuminated by the light signals with two designed time-coding *** measured results show that the metasurface can well generate symmetrical harmonics and white-noise-like spectra,respectively,under such cases in the reflected *** proposed lightcontrollable time-varying metasurface offers a planar interface to tailor and link microwaves with lights in the time domain,which could promote the development of photoelectric hybrid metasurfaces and related multiphysics applications.

Infrared-controlled programmable metasurface

Programmable metasurface enables controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves in real time. By programming the states of active device embedded in metasurface element, the EM properties of the digital metasurface can be changed quickly without redesigning their structures. However, large numbers of long-distance wires are required to connect the programmable metasurface to provide the coded signals from field programmable gate array (FPGA) when controlling the metasurface at a long distance, which is complicated and inconvenient. Here, we propose an infrared-controlled programmable metasurface that can be programmed remotely. The infrared transceiver is able to switch the coding sequences stored in the FPGA controller, thus controlling the voltage on the varactors integrated in the metasurface. Experiment is performed at microwave frequencies, and the measured results verify that the scattering beams of the metasurface sample can be changed remotely by using infrared ray. The proposed infrared-controlled programmable metasurface opens up avenues for constructing a new class of remotely-tuning dynamic metasurfaces.

Impact of ocean data assimilation on the seasonal forecast of the 2014/15 marine heatwave in the Northeast Pacific Ocean

A remarkable marine heatwave,known as the“Blob”,occurred in the Northeast Pacific Ocean from late 2013 to early 2016,which displayed strong warm anomalies extending from the surface to a depth of 300 *** study employed two assimilation schemes based on the global Climate Forecast System of Nanjing University of Information Science(NUIST-CFS 1.0)to investigate the impact of ocean data assimilation on the seasonal prediction of this extreme marine *** sea surface temperature(SST)nudging scheme assimilates SST only,while the deterministic ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF)scheme assimilates observations from the surface to the deep *** latter notably improves the forecasting skill for subsurface temperature anomalies,especially at the depth of 100-300 m(the lower layer),outperforming the SST nudging *** excels in predicting both horizontal and vertical heat transport in the lower layer,contributing to improved forecasts of the lower-layer warming during the *** improvements stem from the assimilation of subsurface observational data,which are important in predicting the upper-ocean *** results suggest that assimilating ocean data with the EnKF scheme significantly enhances the accuracy in predicting subsurface temperature anomalies during the Blob and offers better understanding of its underlying mechanisms.

Boosting bidirectional sulfur conversion enabled by introducing boron-doped atoms and phosphorus vacancies in Ni2P for lithium-sulfur batteries

Lithium-sulfur （Li-S） batteries have gained great attention due to the high theoretical energy density and low cost,yet their further commercialization has been obstructed by the notorious shuttle effect and sluggish redox ***,we supply a strategy to optimize the electron structure of Ni2P by concurrently introducing B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P （Vp-B-Ni2P）,thereby enhancing the bidirectional sulfur *** study indicates that the simultaneous introduction of B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P causes the redistribution of electron around Ni atoms,bringing about the upward shift of d-band center of Ni atoms and effective d-p orbital hybridization between Ni atoms and sulfur species,thus strengthening the chemical anchoring for lithium polysulfides （LiPSs） as well as expediting the bidirectional conversion kinetics of sulfur ***,theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporation of B-doped atoms and P vacancies in Ni2P selectively promotes Li2S dissolution and nucleation ***,the Li-S batteries with Vp-B-Ni2P-separators present outstanding rate ability of 777 m A h g-1at 5 C and high areal capacity of 8.03 mA h cm-2under E/S of 5μL mg-1and sulfur loading of 7.20 mg *** work elucidates that introducing heteroatom and vacancy in metal phosphide collaboratively regulates the electron structure to accelerate bidirectional sulfur conversion.

Fluorinated poly(p-triphenylene isatin) anion exchange membranes based on hydrophilic hydroxyl side chain modulation for fuel cells

The development of alkaline fuel cells is moving forward at an accelerated pace,and the application of ether-free bonded polymers to anion exchange membranes （AEMs） has been widely ***,the question of the“trade-off”between AEM ionic conductivity and dimensional stability remains *** strategy of inducing microphase separation to improve the performance of AEM has attracted much attention recently,but the design of optimal molecular structures is still being ***,this work introduced different ratios of 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone （x=40,50,and 60） into the main chain of poly（p-terphenylene isatin）.Because fluorinated groups have excellent hydrophobicity,hydrophilic hydroxyl-containing side chains are introduced to jointly adjust the formation of phase separation *** results show that PTI-PTF50-NOH AEM with the appropriate fluorinated group ratio has the best ionic conductivity and alkali stability under the combined effect of *** has an ionic conductivity of 133.83 mS cm-1at 80°*** addition,the OH-conductivity remains at 89%of the initial value at 80°C and 3 M KOH for 1056 h of *** cell polarization curve based on PTI-PTF50-NOH shows a power density of 734.76 mW cm-2at a current density of 1807.7 mA cm-2.

A Novel Model for Describing Rail Weld Irregularities and Predicting Wheel-Rail Forces Using a Machine Learning Approach

Rail weld irregularities are one of the primary excitation sources for vehicle-track interaction dynamics in modern high-speed *** can cause significant wheel-rail dynamic interactions,leading to wheel-rail noise,component damage,and *** researchers have employed the vehicle-track interaction dynamic model to study the dynamic interactions between wheel and rail induced by rail weld geometry ***,the cosine wave model used to simulate rail weld irregularities mainly focuses on the maximum value and neglects the geometric *** this study,novel theoretical models were developed for three categories of rail weld irregularities,based on measurements of the high-speed railway from Beijing to *** vertical dynamic forces in the time and frequency domains were compared under different running *** forces generated by the rail weld irregularities that were measured and modeled,respectively,were compared to validate the accuracy of the proposed ***,based on the numerical study,the impact force due to rail weld irrregularity is modeled using an Artificial Neural Network(ANN),and the optimum combination of parameters for this model is *** results showed that the proposed model provided a more accurate wheel/rail dynamic evaluation caused by rail weld irregularities than that established in the *** ANN model used in this paper can effectively predict the impact force due to rail weld irrregularity while reducing the computation time.

Vehicle actuation based short-term traffic flow prediction model for signalized intersections

Traffic flow prediction is an important component for real-time traffic-adaptive signal control in urban arterial *** exploring available detector and signal controller information from neighboring intersections,a dynamic data-driven flow prediction model was *** model consists of two prediction components based on the signal states(red or green) for each movement at an upstream *** characteristics of each signal state were carefully examined and the corresponding travel time from the upstream intersection to the approach in question at the downstream intersection was *** an online turning proportion estimation method,along with the predicted travel times,the anticipated vehicle arrivals can be forecasted at the downstream *** model performance was tested at a set of two signalized intersections located in the city of Gainesville,Florida,USA,using the CORSIM microscopic simulation *** results show that the model agrees well with empirical arrival data measured at 10 s intervals within an acceptable range of 10%-20%,and show a normal *** is reasonably believed that the model has potential applicability for use in truly proactive real-time traffic adaptive signal control systems.

Sporadic E responds to the 2022 Tonga volcano eruptions recorded by the Meridian Project

In this study,ionosonde observations over Fuke(19.5°N,109.1°E),Wuhan(30.5°N,114.4°E),and Mohe(53.5°N,122.3°E)were analyzed to demonstrate the responses of the sporadic E()to the severe atmospheric disturbances caused by the Tonga volcanic eruptions on January 15,*** most prominent signature was the disappearance of the layer after~10:00 UT over Wuhan and Fuke,which was attributed to the vertical drift caused by the *** occurred intermittently after 13:00 UT following the arrival of the tropospheric Lamb *** examine the causal mechanism for the intermittence,we also included data of horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere region recorded by the meteor radars at Wuhan and Mohe in this *** wind disturbances with periods of~20 hours contributed to the formation of the layer in the nighttime on January 15.
