Described is an initial attempt to simulate the suspended sediment dynamics relating to tidal and wave forcing during summertime in June 1980 and August 1981 for the Yellow and East China Seas continental shelf. The cohesive/non-cohesive sediment resuspension and movement generated by the interaction between current and wave are modeled by use of ECOMSED and WAM Cycle 4. Model results are compared with observations in US-China Marine Sedimentation Dynamics Program performed for 1980-81 at off the Changjiang estuary. The main features of simulations show that suspended sediment concentrations during the summer decreased markedly offshore as observed during the simulation periods. As for some discrepancies for the mouth of the estuary with high river discharges, i.e., the Changjiang River, the model did not properly reproduce the over-mixing situation in the summer; thus distinct vertical concentration variation in this local region is not agreeable with observation. However, general dispersal patterns of suspended sediment movement seem to be agreeably reproduced for the nearshore shallow region. Some of the procedures of simulation and results are presented and discussed.

An integrally coupled wave-tide-surge model was developed and then applied to the simulation of the wave-typhoon surge for the typhoon Isewan （typhoon Vera （5915））, which is the strongest typhoon that has struck Japan and caused incalculable damage. An integrally coupled tide-surge-wave model using identical and homogeneous meshes in an unstructured grid system was used to correctly resolve the physics of wave-circulation interaction in both models. All model components were validated independently. The storm surge and wave properties such as the surge height, the significant wave height, wave period and direction were reproduced reasonably under the meteorological forcing, which was reprocessed to be close to the observations. The resulting modeling system can be used extensively for the prediction of the storm surge and waves and the usual barotropic forecast.

The main task of this study focuses on studying the effect of wave-current interaction on currents, storm surge and wind wave as well as effects of current induced wave refraction and current on waves by using numerical models which consider the bottom boundary layer and sea surface roughness parameter for shallow and smooth bed area around Korean Peninsula. The coupled system （unstructured-mesh SWAN wave and ADCIRC） run on the same unstructured mesh. This identical and homogeneous mesh allows the physics of wave-circulation interactions to be correctly resolved in both models. The unstructured mesh can be applied to a large domain allowing all energy from deep to shallow waters to be seamlessly followed. There is no nesting or overlapping of structured wave meshes, and no interpolation is required. In response to typhoon Maemi （2003）, all model components were validated independently, and shown to provide a faithful representation of the system＇s response to this storm. The waves and storm surge were allowed to develop on the continental shelf and interact with the complex nearshore environment. The resulting modeling system can be used extensively for prediction of the typhoon surge. The result show that it is important to incorporate the wave-current interaction effect into coastal area in the wave-tide-surge coupled model. At the same time, it should consider effects of depth-induced wave breaking, wind field, currents and sea surface elevation in prediction of waves. Specially, we found that：（1） wave radiation stress enhanced the current and surge elevation otherwise wave enhanced nonlinear bottom boundary layer decreased that, （2） wind wave was significantly controlled by sea surface roughness thus we cautiously took the experimental expression. The resulting modeling system can be used for hindcasting （prediction） the wave-tide-surge coupled environments at complex coastline, shallow water and fine sediment area like areas around Korean Peninsula.

Tidal current power is one of the promising and reliable renewable energies with the advantage of continuous and predictable resource. It can make stable electricity regardless of weather conditions or seasons all year around. The required technologies for tidal current power in the ocean have been developed for years and now recognized that it could be commercialized after intensive field tests and successful demonstrations. There are several tidal farm development projects in the world, such as the MeyGen project in UK with its commercialization at hand. However, various research subjects in the tidal current energy field are seeking improvements and industrialization of tidal current power in terms of economy and technical reliability. This paper introduces the resource assessment procedure of tidal energy that has been applied in Korea coastal regions. The key research subjects for tidal current power together with the interaction effect of multi-arrangement is described. Also, this paper is to introduce the research output of each subject such as turbine design, experimental validation, turbine interaction and wake, multi-array module, FSI (fluid-structure interaction), and duct application.

Simulation for Water Quality Management in Inohana Lake Estuary, Japan

The Inohana Lake is a branch lake of the Hamana Lake. The Inohana Lake is an estuary rather than a brackish lake, and has suffered environmental problems such as eutrophication and bottom hypoxic water. In this study, the coupled hydrodynamic and ecological models （eco-hydrodynamic model） were used to construct the strategy for preventing the bottom hypoxic water and improving or recovering the water quality in the lake. Using the model input obtained from the summertime data over 1998-2002, the summer-average flow field and oxygen concentration and budget of the standard run were calculated. Remedial measures used in this study are divided into two parts： the biogeochemical and physical changes in the present situation. For the remedial measures including the biogeochemical changes in the present situation, the simulations considering the reductions of the nutrient inputs from the river, main lake （land） and bottom sediment, and the sediment oxygen demand （SOD） were carried out. For the remedial measures including the physical changes, the 50 and 100 m extensions of the inlet width were considered in the model runs. These simulated results were compared in terms of changes in the dissolved oxygen （DO） concentration and oxygen budget in the bottom layer in the Inohana Lake. There was no significant change in the DO concentration and oxygen stock in the simulations for the reduction of the nutrient inputs from the land and bottom sediment, however increases in those in the simulations for the reduction of SOD. When SOD was reduced by 50%, the bottom DO concentration increased by approximately 2 mg/L and the oxygen stock in the bottom layer increased by 47% comparing the present situation （the standard run） of the lake. The simulation results for inlet width extension showed that the extension of width makes the DO concentration and oxygen stock lower. Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. With the high tidal range of up to 9.7 m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with a multi-arrangement is necessary in the ocean. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system, and its performance is determined by various design variables. The power generation is strongly dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. However, the interactions between devices also contribute significantly to the total power capacity. Therefore, rotor performance considering the interaction problems needs to be investigated for generating maximum power in a specific field. This paper documents a performance study of devices considering the interference between rotating rotors with axial, transverse and diagonal arrangements.

Let M be a positive quaternionic Kahler manifold of dimension 4m. We already showed that if the symmetry rank is greater than or equal to [m/2] ＋ 2 and the fourth Betti number b4 is equal to one, then M is isometric to HPm. The goal of this paper is to report that we can improve the lower bound of the symmetry rank by one for higher even-dimensional positive quaternionic Kahler manifolds. Namely, it is shown in this paper that if the symmetry rank of M with b4（M） = 1 is greater than or equal to m/2 ＋ 1 for m ≥ 10, then M is isometric to HPm. One of the main strategies of this paper is to apply a more delicate argument of Frankel type to positive quaternionic Kahler manifolds with certain symmetry rank.

Invasion of an exotic C4 plant Spartina alterniflora has been shown to increase soil organic carbon （SOC） concentrations in native C3 plant-dominated coastal wetlands of China. However, little is known about the effects of S. alterniflora invasion on SOC concentrations and fractions in tidal marshes dominated by native C4 plants. In this study, a field experiment was conducted in a tidal marsh dominated by the native C4 plant Cyperus malaccensis in the Minjiang River estuary, China. Concentrations of SOC and liable SOC fractions, dissolved organic carbon （DOG）, microbial biomass carbon （MBC）, and easily oxidizable carbon （EOC）, were measured in the top 50-cm soils of the C. malaccensis community, as well as those of three S. alterniflova communities with an invasion duration of 0-4 years （SA-4）, 4-8 years （SA-8）, and 8-12 years （SA-12）, respectively. Results showed that both SOC stocks in the 50-cm soils and mean SOC concentrations in the surface soils （0-10 cm） of the C. malaccensis community increased with the duration of S. alterniflora invasion, whereas SOC concentrations in the 10-50-cm soils decreased slightly during the initial period of S. alterniflora invasion, before increasing again. The pattern of changes in labile SOC fractions （DOC, MBC, and EOC） with invasion duration was generally similar to that of SOC, while the ratios of labile SOC fractions to total SOC （DOC：SOC, MBC：SOC, and EOC：SOC） decreased significantly with the duration of S. alterniflora invasion. The findings of this study suggest that invasion of the exotic C4 plant S. alternifora into a marsh dominated by the native C4 plant C. malaecensis would enhance SOC sequestration owing to the greater amount of biomass and lower proportion of labile SOC fractions present in the S. alterniflora communities.
