Performance and environmental impacts of deep foundation excavation in soft soils:A field and modeling-based case study in Nanjing,China

This paper focuses on the performance of a braced deep excavation in soft soil based on field monitoring and numerical *** tests were conducted to determine the soil parameters used in the modified Cam–Clay(MCC)*** field monitoring means were adopted and a three-dimensional model was *** and temporal effects induced by the excavation are investigated for the deep-large foundation pit in soft *** characteristics of the enclosure structure and the surrounding environment throughout the excavation process are *** behaviors of diaphragm walls,columns,the maximum wall deflection rate,ground surface settlement,and utility pipelines were focused on and investigated during the whole excavation ***,the axial forces of the internal supports are *** on the measured and simulated data,the following main conclusions were obtained:the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the measured values,which proves the accuracy of the model parameters;the wall and the ground surface showed the maximum displacement increment at stage 9,which was a coupled product of the"creep effect"of the soft soil in Nanjing,China and the"depth effect"of the excavation;as the excavation progressed,the ground settlement changed from a"rising"to a"spoon-shaped"trend,dvm was measured betweenδ_(vm)=0.0686%H andδ_(vm)=0.1488%H;the rebound deformation curve of the pit bottom was corrugated,and the depth of disturbance of the pit bottom after the completion of soil unloading was 2–3 times the excavation depth;the closer the pipeline is to the corner of the pit,the less the excavation process will affect the settlement of the pipeline and the less the obvious pit corner effect will occur;the support strength of the buttress and the longest corner brace should be strengthened during the actual construction process to ensure the stability of the foundation deformation.

Accurate estimation of the drag forces generated by vegetation stems is crucial for the comprehensive assessment of the impact of aquatic vegetation on hydrodynamic processes in aquatic *** coupling relationship between vegetation layer flow velocity and vegetation drag makes precise prediction of submerged vegetation drag forces particularly *** present study utilized published data on submerged vegetation drag force measurements and employed a genetic programming(GP)algorithm,a machine learning technique,to establish the connection between submerged vegetation drag forces and flow and vegetation *** using the bulk velocity,U,as the reference velocity scale to define the drag coefficient,C_(d),and stem Reynolds number,the GP runs revealed that the drag coefficient of submerged vegetation is related to submergence ratio(H^(*)),aspect ratio(d^(*)),blockage ratio(ψ^(*)),and vegetation density(λ).The relation between vegetation stem drag forces and flow velocity is implicitly embedded in the definition of C_(d).Comparisons with experimental drag force measurements indicate that using the bulk velocity as the reference velocity,as opposed to using the vegetation layer average velocity,U_(v),eliminates the need for complex iterative processes to estimate U_(v)and avoids introducing additional errors associated with U_(v)*** approach significantly enhances the model’s predictive capabilities and results in a simpler and more user-friendly formula expression.

Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)has been widely used as a lubrication additive for reducing friction and wear;however,the hydrophobic nature of PTFE restricts its application in eco-friendly water-based lubrication *** this study,for the first time,we designed novel PTFE@silica Janus nanoparticles(JNs)to meet the requirement for additives in water-based lubricants,which have excellent dispersion stability in water attributed to the unique amphiphilic *** introducing the lubrication of the aqueous dispersion of the JNs with a concentration of 0.5 wt%,the coefficient of friction(COF)and wear volume were reduced by 63.8%and 94.2%,respectively,comparing to those with the lubrication of pure ***,the JNs suspension also exhibits better lubrication and wear-resistance performances comparing to commercial silica and PTFE *** excellent tribological behaviors of PTFE@silica JNs as nano-additives could be attributed to the synergetic effect of the two components,where the PTFE provided lubrication through the formed tribofilms on the friction pairs,and the rigid silica further enhanced the wear-resistance *** importantly,the unique structure of JNs makes it possible to use PTFE as an additive in water-lubrication *** study shed light on the design and application of novel JNs nanomaterials as additives to meet the requirements of future industrial applications.

Interfacial solar-driven evaporation technology shows great potential in the field of industrial seawater desalination, and the development of efficient and low-cost evaporation materials is key to achieving large-scale applications. Hydrogels are considered to be promising candidates; however, conventional hydrogel-based interfacial solar evaporators have difficulty in simultaneously meeting multiple requirements, including a high evaporation rate, salt resistance, and good mechanical properties. In this study, a Janus sponge-like hydrogel solar evaporator (CPAS) with excellent comprehensive performance was successfully constructed. The introduction of biomass agar (AG) into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel backbone reduced the enthalpy of water evaporation, optimized the pore structure, and improved the mechanical properties. Meanwhile, by introducing hydrophobic fumed nano-silica aerogel (SA) and a synergistic foaming-crosslinking process, the hydrogel spontaneously formed a Janus structure with a hydrophobic surface and hydrophilic bottom properties. Based on the reduction of the evaporation enthalpy and the modulation of the pore structure, the CPAS evaporation rate reached 3.56 kg m2 h-1 under one sun illumination. Most importantly, owing to the hydrophobic top surface and 3D-interconnected porous channels, the evaporator could work stably in high concentrations of salt-water (25 wt% NaCl), showing strong salt resistance. Efficient water evaporation, excellent salt resistance, scalable preparation processes, and low-cost raw materials make CPAS extremely promising for practical applications. Lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs)have attracted the attention of more and more researchers due to the advantages of high energy density,environmental friendliness,and low production ***,the low electronic conductivity of active material and shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides(LiPSs)limit the commercial development of *** solve these problems,we design a core-shell composite with nitrogen-doped carbon(NC)and two types of selenides(FeSe_(2)-NC@ZnSe-NC).The FeSe_(2)-NC@ZnSe-NC has a strong adsorption capacity,and can effectively adsorb *** the same time,it also effectively alleviates the shuttling effect of LiPSs,and improves the utilization of the active substance during the charge/discharge reaction *** mechanism involved in FeSe_(2)-NC@ZnSe-NC is demonstrated by both experiments and density-functional theory(DFT)*** electrochemical test results indicate that LSB with S/FeSe_(2)-NC@ZnSe-NC delivers an initial discharge capacity of 1260 mAh·g^(-1)at *** after 500 cycles at 1C,the capacity decay rate per cycle is 0.031%,and the capacity retention rate is 85%.The FeSe_(2)-NC@ZnSe-NC core-shell structure verifies a rational strategy to construct an electrode material for high-performance LSBs.

Iron catalysts are ideal transition metal catalysts because of the Earths abundant, cheap, biocompatible features of iron salts. Iron catalysts often have unique open-shell structures that easily undergo spin crossover in chemical transformations, a feature rarely found in noble metal catalysts. Unfortunately, little is known currently about how the open-shell structure and spin crossover affect the reactivity and selectivity of iron catalysts, which makes the development of iron catalysts a low efficient trial-and-error program. In this paper, a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that the iron-catalyzed hydrosilylation of alkynes is typical spin-crossover catalysis. Deep insight into the electronic structures of a set of well-defined open-shell active formal Fe(0) catalysts revealed that the spin-delocalization between the iron center and the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand effectively regulates the iron center's spin and oxidation state to meet the opposite electrostatic requirements of oxidative addition and reductive elimination, respectively,and the spin crossover is essential for this electron transfer process. The triplet transition state was essential for achieving high regioselectivity through tuning the nonbonding interactions. These findings provide an important reference for understanding the effect of catalyst spin state on reaction. It is inspiring for the development of iron catalysts and other Earth-abundant metal catalysts, especially from the point of view of ligand development.
