Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the colon:A case report and review of literature

＜正＞The intraoperative and postoperative complications of laparoscopic colectomy were analyzed in a consecutive personal series of 90 cases. The final histological diagnosis of these patients was adenoma of the colon in 8, carcinoma of the colon and rectum in 80, leiomyoma of the colon in 1 and Crohn’s disease in 1. The TNM staging of the carcinomas in our series was Tis in 7, T1 in 21, T2 in 12 and T3 in 30, T4 in 10 cases. Six of the 90 cases had to be converted to open surgery. A primary clear cell adenocarcinoma of the colon is a rare oncologic entity. We herein report a case of such a tumor of the sigmoid colon in a 71-year-old woman who was successfully treated by an endoscopic polypectomy in our hospital. We also reviewed the published reports regarding cases of primary clear cell tumors in the colon.

The present paper discusses a design method for the head position in a Hard Disk Drive （HDD） control system. In the HDD control system, the sampling interval of the head position is constrained because of the hardware specifications, but the hold interval of the control input is not constrained. In the present study, a multirate control system is designed, in which the sampling and the hold intervals are not equal. A multirate control law, which stabilizes a closed-loop system, is extended using newly introduced parameters such that the sample response of the plant output is maintained. Furthermore, intersample ripples in the steady state are eliminated using the new design parameters, which can be selected independently of the sample response. As a result, the intersample response can be improved independently of the sample response. The proposed method is applied to a benchmark problem of an HDD system, and its effectiveness is demonstrated.

Zhenxuanyin (镇眩饮) is composed of pure Chinese medicinal herbs, such as gastrodia tuber, poria cocos, ligusticum wallichii etc. 4-verssel occlusion (4VO) model rats were reperfused after 30 minutes’ complete occlusion, and Zhenxuanyin was administered 3 times a day. 24 hours later, 123I-IMP uptake in the brain was evaluated as an index of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The results show that Zhenxuanyin (0.03g kg, 0.3g kg, Ig kg, or 3g/ kg a day) can greatly improve the blood flow in the main cerebral regions, and 0.3g/ kg can increase cerebral blood flow (CBF) to the normal level.

＜正＞BACKGROUND. It has been reported that patients with metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas have higher frequencies of having family history of colorectal carcinoma, associated colorectal adenomas or extracolonic malignancies These clinicopathlogical factors are considered to have a relationship to the development of metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas after colorectal cancer surgery. In this paper, we investigated whether genetic markers such as DNA replication error（RER） was helpful in predicting the development of metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas. METHODS. During the period of 1990-1997, there were 382 colorectal cancer patients who underwent yearly surveillance colonoscopy after surgery. Among these patients, there were 19 nonfamilial colorectal carcinoma patients in which metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas were diagnosed in the yearly surveillance clonoscopy. A control group consisted of 28 patients without synchronous or metachronous carcinomas on surveillance over a period of 5 years or longer. Six microsatellite markers（D2S123, D3S1029, D3S1611, TP53, Mfd26, Mfd36） were used for the determination of MSI by polymerase chain reaction （PCR） RESULS. The frequency of RER positive cases was significantly higher in patients with sporadic metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas than in those with a single carcinoma （17/19 vs.4/28 p＜0.0001）. In the distal colon and rectum. the percentage of RER positive carcinomas was significantly higher in patients with metachronous multiple carcinomas than in those with a single carcinoma [13115 （87%） vs. 0/19 （0％） p＜0.0001]. This difference was not seen in the proximal colon. CONCLUSION. The analysis of RER in sporadic carcinomas of the distal colon and rectum may be helpful in predicting the development of metachronous multiple colorectal carcinomas.

Screening and Phylogenetic Analysis of Deep-Sea Bacteria Capable of Metabolizing Lignin-Derived Aromatic Compounds

Lignin is one of the most abundant biomasses in nature. It is composed of aromatic moieties and has great potential for use in the production of chemical alternatives to petroleum products. Because of increasing interest in biocatalysis, the potential for industrial application of microbial metabolism of lignin-derived compounds has gained considerable recent attention. Functional screenings of culturable bacteria isolated from sediments and sunken wood collected from the deep sea revealed the existence of a number of previously unidentified bacteria capable of metabolizing lignin-related aromatic compounds. Of the 510 isolates obtained in the present study, 208 completely or partially metabolized these compounds. The 208 isolates were classified into diverse phyla, including Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria. Among the 208 isolates, 61 unique 16S rRNA gene sequences were detected including previously unidentified marine lineage isolates. The metabolites of the isolates were analysed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) or gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Most of the representative 61 isolates non-oxidatively decarboxylated the substrates to produce the corresponding aromatic vinyl monomers, which are used as feed stocks for bio-based plastics production. Oxidative metabolism of the lignin-related compounds for assimilation was frequently observed. Our study showed that the deep-sea environment contains an abundance of microorganisms capable of both non-oxidative and oxidative bioconversion of lignin-derived aromatic compounds. The ability for bio-conversion of aromatic compounds found in this study will facilitate the development of future biotechnological applications.

Human uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) develops more often in the muscle tissue layer of the uterine body than in the uterine cervix. The development of gynecologic tumors is often correlated with female hormone secretion;however, the development of uterine LMS is not substantially correlated with hormonal conditions, and the risk factors are not yet known. Importantly, a diagnostic-biomarker, which distinguishes malignant uterine LMS from benign tumor leiomyoma (LMA), is yet to be established. Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze risk factors associated with uterine LMS, to establish a clinical treatment method. Protea some β-ring subunit LMP2/β1i-deficient mice spontaneously develop uterine LMS, with a disease prevalence of ~40% by 14 months of age. We found LMP2/β1i expression to be absent in human uterine LMS, but present in human LMA. Therefore, defective-LMP2/β1i expression may be one of the risk factors for human uterine LMS. LMP2/β1i is a potential diagnostic-biomarker under the combination of candidate molecules, for instance cyclin B1, cyclin E and calponin h1 and ki-67/MIB1 counts for uterine mesenchymal tumors, especially human uterine LMS, and may be a targeted-molecule for a new therapeutic approach.
