Synthesis of coral-like structures of Pr-yb co-doped yIG: Structural,optical, magnetic and antimicrobial properties

Coral-like structures of the y_(3-x)Pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)yb_(y)O_(12),(0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04, 0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.02) compound were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Structural investigation certified the yIG cubic crystal structure formation, without any secondary phase. It is shown that, the relatively large ionic radius of the dopant cations results in an expansion of the lattice parameter, variations in the Iona-O-Iondangle, Iona-O,Iond-O and Ionc-O bond distances and decrease in the average crystallite size. Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and Raman measurements are essential to testify the single-phase formation of yIG crystal structure and are observed changes in the stretching and vibrational modes, respectively. The morphological study, energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) spectra and textural properties show corallike structures, peaks associated with Pr^(3+) and yb^(3+) atoms and the effect of dopants on surface area,diameter, and pore volume, respectively. The optical analysis from diffuse reflectance spectra witnessed an increase in the optical gap band, a decrease in Urbach energy and blue shift in the charge transfer,correlated with the expansion of the unit cell due to the dopant's insertion in the yIG structure. A typical ferrimagnetic behavior is exhibited by the y_(3-x)Pr_(x)Fe_(5-y)yb_(y)O_(12)compound. The saturation magnetization(M_(s)), cubic anisotropy constant(K_(1)) and coercive field(H_(c)) increase with the Pr^(3+)cations content, as consequence of their magnetic nature and distribution around of Fe^(3+)ions due to the coexistence with the yb^(3+). Finally, for the first time, antibacterial tests by mean of the direct contact method were performed for yIG co-doped with Pr^(3+)and yb^(3+)and it is shown that, relatively high dosages of Pr^(3+) cations favored the activity against S. aureus, therefore, a new biological property for yIG doped with rare earths is presented.

BACKGROUND Portal vein arterialization(PVA)has been used in liver transplantation(LT)to maximize oxygen delivery when arterial circulation is compromised or has been used as an alternative reperfusion technique for complex portal vein thrombosis(PVT).The effect of PVA on portal perfusion and primary graft dysfunction(PGD)has not been assessed.All patients receiving PVA and LT at the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota between 2011 and 2022 were analyzed.To account for the time-sensitive effects of graft perfusion,patients were classified into two groups:prereperfusion(pre-PVA),if the arterioportal anastomosis was performed before graft revascularization,and postreperfusion(post-PVA),if PVA was performed afterward.The pre-PVA rationale contemplated poor portal hemodynamics,severe vascular steal,or PVT.Post-PVA was considered if graft hypoperfusion became evident.Conservative interventions were attempted before PVA.

Neuropsychological Profile of a Patient with Acquired Brain Damage Following Vascular Lesion of the Left Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Stroke is a physiological alteration associated with changes in blood flow that can result in sudden-onset cognitive impairment. It has a heterogenous clinical presentation with varying degrees of severity correlated with specific central nervous system zones or areas, and its prognosis is uncertain. This case study describes a 62-year-old male patient with acquired brain damage of the anterior cingulate cortex as a result of an ischemic event in the territory of the left anterior cerebral artery. Cognitive function was assessed using the neuropsychological executive function and frontal lobe test battery (BANFE-2) as well as other neuropsychological tests. The results show a profile of higher mental functions characterized by the presence of dysexecutive syndrome with marked behavioral alteration and diencephalic amnesia. .

Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Vulva: Case Report and Literature Review

Background: Neuroendocrine neoplasms are those that develop from a neuroendocrine cell. They most commonly affect the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and pancreas, being rare conditions in the female genital tract. When present, these neoplasms often manifest with nonspecific signs and symptoms such as pain, itching, swelling, single-focus lesions, bleeding, and enlargement of inguinal lymph nodes, in addition to the presence of progressively enlarging vulvar nodules. Consequently, the diagnostic investigation involves histopathological examination and confirmation through immunohistochemistry. Objective: To present a comprehensive understanding of this rarely studied pathology. The primary objective is to provide valuable insights that could aid in the future development of universally applicable treatment guidelines. Case Presentation: A 57-year-old female, with no prior comorbidities, menopause at 36, who presented with a left vulvar nodule accompanied by intense pain and swelling, later diagnosed with small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the vulva. Conclusion: This case report highlights the importance of enhancing our knowledge regarding small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the vulva, given its scarcity in medical literature. The information presented here underscores the need for standardized diagnostic and treatment approaches, paving the way for future consensus on managing this uncommon but challenging neoplasm.

Influence of wire spacing and plate spacing on electrostatic precipitation of nanoparticles: An approach involving electrostatic shielding and diffusion charging

Electrostatic precipitation is a process widely used as gas cleaning device,to removal particles from gas flows.However,in a conventional and well-sized precipitator,the collection efficiency decreases for ultrafine particles,making it difficult to employ this equipment for controlling nanoparticle pollution.This paper investigates the influence of plate spacing(4 and 6.5 cm)and wire spacing(4,6,and 12 cm)on the electric current and nanoparticle collection efficiency,considering the effect of diffusion charging and electrostatic shielding.Two laboratory-scale dry wire-plate electrostatic precipitators with different plate spacings were tested for the collection of nanoparticles(6.15–241.4 nm)at three air velocities(1.9,2.9,and 3.9 cm/s).The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the equipment in removing nanoparticles(99.9%)under the highest electric fields.Higher values of the wire spacing led to increases in the current and the collection efficiency.This was associated with reduced electrostatic shielding,which is more evident in smaller ducts with a higher density of field lines.It is expected that the findings should improve knowledge on electrostatic precipitation of nanoparticles,enabling optimization of collection efficiency by considering the effects of geometric parameters.

Discordance among aggressiveness characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma:Portal vein thrombosis and multifocality,related to tumor size,but not to serum alpha-fetoprotein level

Background and aims:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is characterized by several clinically important prognostic parameters,including portal vein thrombosis(PVT),tumor multifocality,and serum alphafetoprotein(AFP)levels,in addition to maximum tumor diameter(MTD).However,associations among these parameters have not been thoroughly examined.Thus,the study aimed to investigate the correlations among these HCC characteristics in a prospectively collected database.Methods:An 8080 HCC patient database derived from our weekly HCC council meeting was examined with respect to the correlations at baseline patient presentation between increases in MTD and changes in the percentage of patients with PVT,multifocality,or AFP levels.Results:The percentage of patients with PVT and with multifocality(tumor nodule numbers≥3)significantly increased with enlarging MTD,regardless of the serum AFP level,showing the independence of PVT and multifocality on AFP.The percentage of patients with multifocality increased with enlarging MTD,in the presence or absence of PVT,showing the independence of multifocality from PVT.Therefore,discordance was found between different tumor parameters.Conclusions:A statistically significant association was found between PVT and MTD and between multifocality and MTD,all three of which are independent of AFP.PVT and multifocality appeared to be independent of each other.Although PVT and multifocality were independent of AFP,they were also augmented with high serum AFP levels.The results suggest the possibility of multiple pathways of tumor progression in the later stages of HCC development.

Extracellular vesicles have been identified as pivotal mediators of intercellular communication with critical roles in physiological and pathological conditions.Via this route,several molecules(e.g.,nucleic acids,proteins,metabolites) can be transferred to proximal and distant targets to convey specific information.Extracellular vesicle-associated cargo molecules have been proposed as markers of several disease conditions for their potential of tracking down the generating cell.Indeed,circulating extracellular vesicles may represent biomarkers of dysfunctional cellular quality control systems especially in conditions characterized by the accrual of intracellular misfolded proteins.Furthermore,the identification of extracellular vesicles as tools for the delivery of nucleic acids or other cargo molecules to diseased tissues makes these circulating shuttles possible targets for therapeutic development.The increasing interest in the study of extracellular vesicles as biomarkers resides mainly in the fact that the identification of peripheral levels of extracellular vesicle-associated proteins might reflect molecular events occurring in hardly accessible tissues,such as the brain,thereby serving as a "brain liquid biopsy".The exploitation of extracellular vesicles for diagnostic and therapeutic purposed might offer unprecedented opportunities to develop personalized approaches.Here,we discuss the bright and dark sides of extracellular vesicles in the setting of two main neurodegenerative diseases(i.e.,Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases).A special focus will be placed on the possibility of using extracellular vesicles as biomarkers for the two conditions to enable disease tracking and treatment monitoring.

Cell replacement therapy has long been proposed as a treatment for the damaged nervous system.One of the most challenging aspects of such a strategy,however,is finding sources of donor cells for transplantation.Autologous neural cells are rarely an option as every cell in the nervous system has a defined function that would be lost if that cell was to be removed.One possibility would be sourcing precursor or differentiated cells from fetal tissues;however,aside from ethical issues,heterologous cells are at risk of immunological rejection in the long term.Methodological improvements over the past 15 years have led to the possibility that autologous non-neural cells could be used for cell transplantation through their conversion into neural derivatives.

Do experienced subjects bias experimental results?Evidence from 16 laboratories in six countries

This paper addresses an area of growing concerns for laboratory researchers:is subjects’behaviour affected by prior experiences in laboratory experiments?We address the question with a large and highly diverse international dataset and an operationalisation strategy that allows our findings to cohere with previous work while shedding new light on future research.The findings presented in this article are drawn from original data gathered as part of one of the largest tax compliance experiments ever conducted,involving more than 3,000 participants in six countries,across 16 different laboratories.Our results reveal that subjects’behaviour correlates with their past experimental experiences,in a way that could bias results and compromise a study’s external validity.However,this change in behaviour due to experiences occurs only after subjects have participated in at least two previous laboratory experiments.The findings have implications not just for tax compliance research,but for allocation experiments more generally and for participant recruitment particularly.

Urethroplasty in a post irradiation urethral stricture-a review

Radiotherapy-induced urethral strictures(RIUS)decrease quality of life and present a great challenge for surgical reconstruction,especially due to proximal location,compromised vascular supply,and poor wound healing.It is unclear whether urethroplasty is an option in cases with stricture resulting from exposure to pelvic radiation.We review the pathophysiology,diagnostic workup,and disease-specific aspects of RIUS.Furthermore,we discuss several management alternatives such as excision and primary anastomosis,as well as techniques for open reconstruction with flaps.The most extensive techniques in the treatment of strictures include,for example,those using gracilis muscle flaps,as they can involve periurethral tissue to provide sufficient vascularity for excellent post-surgery urethral healing.In brief,RIUS represent a significant challenge.In carefully chosen patients,urethroplasty should be considered as a feasible and durable treatment.However,medical practitioners should always take into consideration that the results of urethroplasty in RIUS are not comparable to urethroplasties without a radiation background.
