Multi-layer perceptron-based data-driven multiscale modelling of granular materials with a novel Frobenius norm-based internal variable

One objective of developing machine learning(Ml)-based material models is to integrate them with well-established numerical methods to solve boundary value problems(BVPs).In the family of Ml models,recurrent neural networks(RNNs)have been extensively applied to capture history-dependent constitutive responses of granular materials,but these multiple-step-based neural networks are neither sufficiently efficient nor aligned with the standard finite element method(FEM).Single-step-based neural networks like the multi-layer perceptron(MlP)are an alternative to bypass the above issues but have to introduce some internal variables to encode complex loading histories.In this work,one novel Frobenius norm-based internal variable,together with the Fourier layer and residual architectureenhanced MlP model,is crafted to replicate the history-dependent constitutive features of representative volume element(RVE)for granular materials.The obtained Ml models are then seamlessly embedded into the FEM to solve the BVP of a biaxial compression case and a rigid strip footing case.The obtained solutions are comparable to results from the FEM-DEM multiscale modelling but achieve significantly improved efficiency.The results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed internal variable in enabling MlP to capture highly nonlinear constitutive responses of granular materials.

Response Evaluation Using Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound for Unresectable Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated With Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors Plus Anti-PD-1 Antibody Therapy

Objective: The aim of the work described here was to evaluate the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in response evaluation for unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) plus anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) antibody therapy. Methods: A prospective cohort of consecutive patients with HCC who received combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody treatment for unresectable HCC between January 2022 and October 2022 was included in this study. The patients underwent unenhanced ultrasound (US) and CEUS examinations before treatment and at follow-up. Changes in the largest diameters of the target tumor on unenhanced US and the largest diameters of the enhancing target tumors on CEUS were evaluated. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 with unenhanced US and magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography (MRI/CT) and modified RECIST (mRECIST) with CEUS and CEMRI/CT were used to assess treatment response. Results: A total of 24 HCC patients (23 men and 1 woman; mean age: 56.5 ± 8.5 y; Barcelona Clinic liver Cancer stage C, 62.5%; 29 intrahepatic target tumors) were studied. Calculations of degree of necrosis in the target tumors revealed no significant differences between CEUS and CEMRI/CT (44.5 ± 36.2% vs. 45.3 ± 36.8%, p = 0.862). As for the differentiation of responders from non-responders, the agreement between RECIST version 1.1 of unenhanced US and mRECIST-CEUS was poor (κ coefficient = 0.233). Meanwhile, there was a high degree of concordance between mRECIST-CEUS and mRECIST-CEMRI/CT (κ coefficient = 0.812). Conclusion: CEUS proved to be superior to baseline US and is comparable to CEMRI/CT in defining treatment outcome for combined TKI/anti-PD-1 antibody therapy. © 2023 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

As important messengers of intercellular communication,exosomes can regulate local and distant cellular communication by transporting specific exosomal con-tents and can also promote or suppress the development and progression of gas-tric cancer(GC)by regulating the growth and proliferation of tumor cells,the tumor-related immune response and tumor angiogenesis.Exosomes transport bioactive molecules including DNA,proteins,and RNA(coding and noncoding)from donor cells to recipient cells,causing reprogramming of the target cells.In this review,we will describe how exosomes regulate the cellular immune respon-se,tumor angiogenesis,proliferation and metastasis of GC cells,and the role and mechanism of exosome-based therapy in human cancer.We will also discuss the potential application value of exosomes as biomarkers in the diagnosis and treat-ment of GC and their relationship with drug resistance.

Atomically Substitutional Engineering of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide layers for Enhancing Tailored Properties and Superior Applications

Transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)are a promising class of layered materials in the post-graphene era,with extensive research attention due to their diverse alternative elements and fascinating semiconductor behavior.Binary MX2 layers with different metal and/or chalcogen elements have similar structural parameters but varied optoelectronic properties,providing opportunities for atomically substitutional engineering via partial alteration of metal or/and chalcogenide atoms to produce ternary or quaternary TMDs.The resulting multinary TMD layers still maintain structural integrity and homogeneity while achieving tunable(opto)electronic properties across a full range of composition with arbitrary ratios of introduced metal or chalcogen to original counterparts(0–100%).Atomic substitution in TMD layers offers new adjustable degrees of freedom for tailoring crystal phase,band alignment/structure,carrier density,and surface reactive activity,enabling novel and promising applications.This review comprehensively elaborates on atomically substitutional engineering in TMD layers,including theoretical foundations,synthetic strategies,tailored properties,and superior applications.The emerging type of ternary TMDs,Janus TMDs,is presented specifically to highlight their typical compounds,fabrication methods,and potential applications.Finally,opportunities and challenges for further development of multinary TMDs are envisioned to expedite the evolution of this pivotal field.

The severe degradation of electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries(lIBs)at low temperatures poses a significant challenge to their practical applications.Consequently,extensive efforts have been contributed to explore novel anode materials with high electronic conductivity and rapid li^(+)diffusion kinetics for achieving favorable low-temperature performance of lIBs.Herein,we try to review the recent reports on the synthesis and characterizations of low-temperature anode materials.First,we summarize the underlying mechanisms responsible for the performance degradation of anode materials at subzero temperatures.Second,detailed discussions concerning the key pathways(boosting electronic conductivity,enhancing li^(+)diffusion kinetics,and inhibiting lithium dendrite)for improving the low-temperature performance of anode materials are presented.Third,several commonly used low-temperature anode materials are briefly introduced.Fourth,recent progress in the engineering of these low-temperature anode materials is summarized in terms of structural design,morphology control,surface&interface modifications,and multiphase materials.Finally,the challenges that remain to be solved in the field of low-temperature anode materials are discussed.This review was organized to offer valuable insights and guidance for next-generation lIBs with excellent low-temperature electrochemical performance.

Proactive Resilience Enhancement of Power Systems with link Transmission Model-based Dynamic Traffic Assignment Among Electric Vehicles

The rapid development of electric vehicles(EVs)is strengthening the bi-directional interactions between electric power networks(EPNs)and transportation networks(TNs)while providing opportunities to enhance the resilience of power systems towards extreme events.To quantify the temporal and spatial flexibility of EVs for charging and discharging,a novel dynamic traffic assignment(DTA)problem is proposed.The DTA problem is based on a link transmission model(lTM)with extended charging links,depicting the interaction between EVs and power systems.It models the charging rates as continuous variables by an energy boundary model.To consider the evacuation requirements of TNs and the uncertainties of traffic conditions,the DTA problem is extended to a two-stage distributionally robust version.It is further incorporated into a two-stage distributionally robust unit commitment problem to balance the enhancement of EPNs and the performance of TNs.The problem is reformulated into a mixed-integer linear programming problem and solved by off-the-shelf commercial solvers.Case studies are performed on two test networks.The effectiveness is verified by the numerical results,e.g.,reducing the load shedding amount without increasing the unmet traffic demand.

TBK1:a new target for overcoming cancer immunotherapy resistance

In a recent study published in Nature,Sun et al.(2023)discovered that targeting TANK-binding kinase 1(TBK1)can successfully overcome resistance to immune checkpoint blockade(ICB)treatment and the study revealed its potential mechanism.The authors provided evidence that the disruption of TBK1 signal enhances the blockade of programmed cell death protein-1(PD-1)and promotes anti-tumor immunity in the tumor microenvironment(TME).Tumor cells rely on Janus kinase(JAK)and signal transducer as well as activator of transcription(STAT)signals to elicit an immune response by perceiving tumor necrosis factorα(TNF-α)and interferon-γ(IFN-γ),resulting in receptor-interacting protein kinase(RIPK)-caspase-mediated cell death in tumor cells(Figure 1).

Tailored architecture of composite electrolyte for all-solid-state sodium batteries with superior rate performance and cy.l. life

Seeking for composite electrolytes reinforced all-solid-state sodium ion batteries with superior long lifespan and rate performance remains a great challenge.Here,a unique strategy to tailor the architecture of composite electrolyte via inserting polymer chains into a small quantity of sulfate sodium grafted C_(48)0H_(28)O_(32)Zr_(6)(UIOSNa)is proposed.The intimate contact between polymer segments and UIOSNa with limited pore size facilitates the anion immobilization of sodium salts and reduction of polymer crystallinity,thereby providing rapid ion conduction and reducing the adverse effect caused by the immigration of anions.The tNa+grafting of-SO_(3)Na groups on fillers allows the free movement of more sodium ions to further improve and ionic conductivity.Consequently,even with the low content of UIOSNa fillers,a high ionic conductivity of 6.62×10^(-4) S·cm^(-1) at 60℃ and a transference number of 0.67 for the special designed composite electrolyte are achieved.The assembled all-solid-state sodium cell exhibits a remarkable rate performance for 500 cy.l.s with 95.96%capacity retention at a high current rate of 4 C.The corresponding pouch cell can stably work for 1000 cy.l.s with 97.03%capacity retention at 1 C,which is superior to most of the reported composite electrolytes in the literature.

Review on synergistic damage effect of irradiation and corrosion on reactor structural alloys

The synergistic damage effect of irradiation and corrosion of reactor structural materials has been a prominent research focus.This paper provides a comprehensive review of the synergistic effects on the third-and fourth-generation fission nuclear energy structural materials used in pressurized water reactors and molten salt reactors.The competitive mechanisms of multiple influencing factors,such as the irradiation dose,corrosion type,and environmental temperature,are summarized in this paper.Conceptual approaches are proposed to alleviate the synergistic damage caused by irradiation and corrosion,thereby promoting in-depth research in the future and solving this key challenge for the structural materials used in reactors.

Nanoforming of transferred metal contacts for enhanced twodimensional field effect transistors

Two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides(2D-TMDs)have attracted much attention because of their unique layered structure and physical properties for transistor applications.Mechanically transferred metal contacts on these low-dimensional materials or their homogeneous and heterogeneous multilayers have generated huge interest to avoid deposition damages.In this paper,we show that there are large physical gaps at both the edge contact and surface contact between the transferred electrodes and the 2D materials.A method called laser shock induced superplastic deformation(lSISD)is proposed to tackle this issue and enhance the performance of the transistors.The enhancement mechanism was investigated by molecular dynamics(MD)simulations of the nanoforming process,atomic force microscopy(AFM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM)characterizations of the interfaces,and density functional theory(DFT)modeling.The force effect of laser shock can reduce the contact gap between metals and semiconductors.The electrical performances of the transistors before and after lSISD,along with MD simulations,are used to find the optimal process parameters.In addition,this paper applies the lSISD method to the short-channel MoS_(2)/graphene vertical transistors to show potential improvement in interface contact and electrical properties.This paper demonstrates the first report on using mechanical force induced by.l.ser shock to enhance metal–semiconductor interfaces and transistor performances.
