Gaoligong Mountain(hereafter,GLGM)is located at the intersection of Myanmar and China’s Yunnan Province and Xizang Zizhiqu,and spans three globally significant biodiversity hotspots:the Himalayas,Indo-Burma,and the Mountains of Southwest China.Although surveys of mammals in this ecologically important region have a long history,there is no comprehensive systematic checklist and distribution account of the mammals of GLGM.Here,we compiled a mammal species checklist of GLGM based on thorough field investigations and literature reviews.We also examined specimen collections and applied camera trapping surveys to explore the region’s mammal diversity and distribution patterns.We recorded 212 mammal species in nine orders,33 families,and 119 genera,which accounts for 30.5%of China’s mammal species,and a high proportion of nationally protected(50)and globally threatened(29)species.Mammal species richness showed a symmetrical unimodal curve along the elevation gradient,peaking at intermediate elevations(2000 to 2500 m above sea level(asl)),and increasing generally from south to north,slightly higher in the east slope than in the west.Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed three distinct elevational assemblages(3500 m asl)and significant south-to-north variation,but no substantial differences between the east and west slopes.The GLGM present a unique conservation value due to the high proportions of rare and endangered mammal species,complex faunal composition,high endemism,and being the distribution boundary for many species.This study is an important phased account of mammal diversity in GLGM and makes a prospect for future research.

Tiger reappearance in Medog highlights the conservation values of the region for this apex predator

In less than a century,Asia’s largest apex predator,the tiger(Panthera tigris),has been relegated to isolated populations surviving in only a small fraction of its historical range.The Medog region,located in Xizang Zizhiqu(Tibet),China,is an important stronghold for this ecologically important apex predator.To enhance our knowledge of the status of tigers in the Medog region,we carried out a systematic camera trapping survey combined with socioecological data collection between April 2020 and May 2022.We surveyed a 1769 km2 area across the Medog region,with a total valid sampling effort of 43163 camera days from 322 camera stations.We also collected socioecological data from 27 forest rangers.We documented tigers at eight camera trapping stations at two villages separated by the Jinzhu Tsangpo River,confirming the presence of at least one adult male individual within the Medog region.These new records were observed over 80 km northeast of the first record in 2019.Additionally,residents reported tiger sightings in 2020 and likely tiger pugmarks in 2021.These spatially and temporally separate records of tigers in the Medog region provide valuable data for informing species-oriented conservation management and highlight the importance of the region for tiger movement and population expansion.However,although encouraging,our survey also detected human activities that may threaten tigers and their potential prey.Ensuring the future survival of tigers in the Medog region entails anti-poaching patrols and long-term camera trapping efforts.In addition,it is also important to identify and establish corridors that connect the Medog region with the adjacent Zangnan region,which also harbors an important population of tigers.

Patterns of human-wildlife conflict and compensation practices around Daxueshan Nature Reserve, China

Understanding the spatial patterns of human-wildlife conflict is essential to inform management decisions to encourage coexistence, but it is constrained by the lack of spatially-explicit data. We collected spatially-implicit data of human-wildlife conflicts from 2009-2015 around Daxueshan Nature Reserve, Yunnan, China, and investigated the patterns and drivers of these conflicts. A questionnaire was also designed to capture local resident attitudes toward insurance-based compensation for the losses caused by targeted wildlife. We found that the Asiatic black bear （Ursus thibetanus） was the most conflict-prone animal around the reserve, followed by the rhesus macaque （Macaca mulatta） and Southeast Asian sambar （Cervus equinus）. Conflicts were unevenly distributed among seasons, villages, and communities, with several grids identified as conflict hotspots. Poisson models revealed that human-bear conflicts were negatively related to distance to the reserve and proportion of forest, but positively correlated to the proportion of cropland. Binomial models showed that communities affected by crop depredation were positively correlated with the proportion of cropland and negatively correlated with distance to the reserve, whereas communities affected by livestock depredation were negatively correlated with the proportion of cropland. The insurance-based scheme has compensated over 90% of losses, to the satisfaction of 90.6% of respondents. Our results suggest that human-bear conflict could be potentially reduced by eliminating food crops near the reserve boundary and livestock grazing at conflict hotspots.In addition, the insurance-based scheme could be replicated at a broader scale with improvement in loss assessment.

Isolated alpine habitats reveal disparate ecological drivers of taxonomic and functional beta-diversity of small mammal assemblages

The interpretation of patterns of biodiversity requires the disentanglement of geographical and environmental variables.Disjunct alpine communities are geographically isolated from one another but experience similar environmental impacts.Isolated homogenous habitats may promote speciation but constrain functional trait variation.In this study,we examined the hypothesis that dispersal limitation promotes taxonomic divergence,whereas habitat similarity in alpine mountains leads to functional convergence.We performed standardized field investigation to sample non-volant small mammals from 18 prominent alpine sites in the Three Parallel Rivers area.We estimated indices quantifying taxonomic and functional alpha-and beta-diversity,as well as beta-diversity components.We then assessed the respective importance of geographical and environmental predictors in explaining taxonomic and functional compositions.No evidence was found to show that species were more functionally similar than expected in local assemblages.However,the taxonomic turnover components were higher than functional ones(0.471±0.230 vs.0.243±0.215),with nestedness components showing the opposite pattern(0.063±0.054 vs.0.269±0.225).This indicated that differences in taxonomic compositions between sites occurred from replacement of functionally similar species.Geographical barriers were the key factor influencing both taxonomic total dissimilarity and turnover components,whereas functional betadiversity was primarily explained by climatic factors such as minimum temperature of the coldest month.Our findings provide empirical evidence that taxonomic and functional diversity patterns can be independently driven by different ecological processes.Our results point to the importance of clarifying different components of beta-diversity to understand the underlying mechanisms of community assembly.These results also shed light on the assembly rules and ecological processes of terrestrial mammal communities in extreme environments.

Effects of microenvironment and biological behavior on the paracrine function of stem cells

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),the most well-studied cell type in the field of stem cell therapy,have multi-lineage differentiation and self-renewal potential.MsC-based thera-pies have been used to treat diverse diseases because of their ability to potently repair tissue and locally restore function.An increasing body of evidence demonstrates that paracrine func-tion is central to the effects of MsC-based therapy.Growth factors,cytokines,chemokines,extracellular matrix components,and extracellular vehicles all contribute to the beneficial ef-fects of MSCs on tissue regeneration and repair.The paracrine substances secreted by MSCs change depending on the tissue microenvironment and biological behavior.In this review,we discuss the bioactive substances secreted by MsCs depending on the microenvironment and biological behavior and their regulatory mechanisms,which explain their potential to treat human diseases,to provide new ideas for further research and clinical cell-free therapy.

Microbiome changes in esophageal cancer:implications for pathogenesis and prognosis

Esophageal cancer(EC)is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis.Various factors,including dietary habits,and antacid and antibiotic use,have been shown to influence the esophageal microbiome.Conversely,enrichment and diversity of the esophageal microbiome can also impact its function.Recent studies have revealed prevalent changes in the esophageal microbiome among patients with EC,thus suggesting the potential contribution of the esophageal microbiome to EC development.Additionally,distinct microbiome compositions have been observed in patients with different responses to radiotherapy and chemotherapy,indicating the role of the esophageal microbiome in modulating treatment outcomes.In this review,we have examined previous studies on the esophageal microbiome in healthy individuals and patients with EC or other esophageal diseases,with a focus on identifying microbial communities associated with EC pathogenesis and prognosis.Understanding the role of the microbiome in EC may aid in early detection and optimized treatment strategies,ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients.

Inhibiting shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides by double metal selenides for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

lithium-sulfur batteries（LSBs） have attracted the attention of more and more researchers due to the advantages of high energy density,environmental friendliness,and low production cost.However,the low electronic conductivity of active material and shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides（liPSs） limit the commercial development of LSBs.To solve these problems,we design a core-shell composite with nitrogen-doped carbon（NC） and two types of selenides（FeSe2-NC@ZnSe-NC）.The FeSe2-NC@ZnSe-NC has a strong adsorption capacity,and can effectively adsorb liPSs.At the same time,it also effectively alleviates the shuttling effect of liPSs,and improves the utilization of the active substance during the charge/discharge reaction processes.The mechanism involved in FeSe2-NC@ZnSe-NC is demonstrated by both experiments and density-functional theory（DFT） calculations.The electrochemical test results indicate that LSB with S/FeSe2-NC@ZnSe-NC delivers an initial discharge capacity of 1260 mAh·g-1at 0.2C.And after 500 cycles at 1C,the capacity decay rate per cycle is 0.031%,and the capacity retention rate is 85%.The FeSe2-NC@ZnSe-NC core-shell structure verifies a rational strategy to construct an electrode material for high-performance LSBs.

Let G={Gi:i∈[n]} be a collection of not necessarily distinct n-vertex graphs with the same vertex set V,where G can be seen as an edge-colored(multi)graph and each Gi is the set of edges with color i.A graph F on V is called rainbow if any two edges of F come from different Gis’.We say that G is rainbow pancyclic if there is a rainbow cycle Cℓof lengthℓin G for each integerℓ2[3,n].In 2020,Joos and Kim proved a rainbow version of Dirac’s theorem:Ifδ(Gi)≥2/n for each i∈[n],then there is a rainbow Hamiltonian cycle in G.In this paper,under the same condition,we show that G is rainbow pancyclic except that n is even and G consists of n copies of Kn/2,n/2.This result supports the famous meta-conjecture posed by Bondy.

Migration and distribution characteristics of soil heavy metal(loid)s at a lead smelting site

Heavy metal(loid)s contamination is a constant issue at smelting sites.It is essential to investigate the spatial distribution and migration characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s in the soil for environmental management and remediation strategies of non-ferrous smelting sites.In this study,203 soil samples from 57 sites were collected in a typical lead smelting site.The findings demonstrated that there were significant Pb,Zn,Cd,and As contamination in soil samples.The spatial distribution of heavy metal(loid)s showed strong spatial heterogeneity,the contaminated soil areas of Pb,As,Cd,and Zn were 99.5%,98.9%,85.3%,and 72.4%,respectively.Pb,Cd,and As contamination of the soil reached a depth of 5 m,which migrated from the surface to deep soil layers.The leaching contents of Zn,Pb,and As decreased obviously in 3-4 m soil layer,but the leaching content of Cd was still high,which indicated the high migration of Cd.With the increase of depth,the proportion of acid soluble fraction of heavy metal(loid)s decreased,and the residual fraction increased.The acid soluble fraction of Cd accounted for a higher proportion,and As mainly existed in reducible and residual fractions in soil.According to the calculation of the migration factor,the migration of heavy metal(loid)s in soils were ordered as Cd>Zn>Pb>As.The outcomes are advantageous for risk reduction and site remediation for non-ferrous metal smelting sites.

Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Multiuser Millimeter-Wave/THz Systems

It is assumed that reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS)is a key technology to enable the potential of mmWave communications.The passivity of the RIS makes channel estimation difficult because the channel can only be measured at the transceiver and not at the RIS.In this paper,we propose a novel separate channel estimator via exploiting the cascaded sparsity in the continuously valued angular domain of the cascaded channel for the RIS-enabled millimeter-wave/Tera-Hz systems,i.e.,the two-stage estimation method where the cascaded channel is separated into the base station(BS)-RIS and the RIS-user(UE)ones.Specifically,we first reveal the cascaded sparsity,i.e.,the sparsity exists in the hybrid angular domains of BS-RIS and the RIS-UEs separated channels,to construct the specific sparsity structure for RIS enabled multi-user systems.Then,we formulate the channel estimation problem using atomic norm minimization(ANM)to enhance the proposed sparsity structure in the continuous angular domains,where a low-complexity channel estimator via Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers(ADMM)is proposed.Simulation findings demonstrate that the proposed channel estimator outperforms the current state-of-the-arts in terms of performance.
