Danzhi Jiangtang capsule(丹蛭降糖胶囊) alleviate hyperglycemiaand periodontitis via Wnt/β-catenin signaling in diabetic rats

OBJECTIVE:To elucidate whether Danzhi Jiangtang capsule(丹蛭降糖胶囊,DJC)has treatment effects on diabetic periodontitis and the potential mechanism.METHODS:One week after the induction of diabetes by streptozotocin(STZ),60 male Wistar rats were ligated by orthodontic ligation thread in cervical portion of bilateral maxillary first molar to induce diabetic periodontitis.Periodontitis was exanimated by tooth tissue morphology after 4 weeks.And then all rats were divided into 5 groups:diabetic periodontitis group(DP,n=20),periodontal basic treatment group(DP+BT,n=20),periodontal basic treatment+DJC treatment group(DP+BT+DJC,n=20)and additional Wnt/β-catenin inhibitor group(DP+BT+DJC+WIKI4/21 H7,n=20).Eight weeks after different interventions,fasting plasma glucose(FPG),C-peptide and glycosylated hemoglobin(Hb Alc)of rats were measured and then all rats were sacrificed.The paraffin sections of periodontal tissue were executed hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining and immunohistochemical examination.The m RNA and protein levels of inflammatory cytokines were evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(Q-PCR)and Western blotting(WB).The protein levels of Wnt/β-catenin signaling molecules were measured by WB.RESULTS:The blood glucose and C-peptide concentrations in DP,DP+BT and DP+BT+DJC groups were gradually reduced,with gradually decreased distance of CEJ-A and the percentage of periodontal ligament(PDL),as well as gradually increased Hb Alc.The number of monocytes and leukocytes in the junctional epithelium and periodontal connective tissue was markedly decreased in DP+BT+DJC group(P<0.05),which was slightly reduced in DP+BT group comparing to DP group.The protein levels of Wnt1 andβ-catenin were obviously up-regulated with DJC treatment,while the SOST and DDK1 were markedly down-regulated with DJC treatment.The expression levels of BGP were lowest in DP group and highest in DP+BT+DJC group,while the tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interferon-γ(IFN-γ)and metalloproteinase-3(MMP-3)were highest in DP group and lowest in DP+B

Isolation and identification of fungi found in contaminated fermented milk and antifungal activity of vanillin

Fungi contamination is an important factor affecting the quality and commercial value of fermented milk.Vanillin is known as a safe and efficient natural antimicrobial additive with great potential value as a food bio-preservative.In this study,the microbiological quality of fermented milk of different brands retailed in China and the antimicrobial activity of vanillin were investigated.A total of 27 fermented milk samples were purchased and evaluated.Fungal isolates obtained were characterized by DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer(ITS)region.The effects of vanillin on the growth of fungi were studied by plate dilution method,radical colony diameter,and mycelium biomass.The result showed that 14.8%of the samples were contaminated with three different species of fungi with Cladosporium spp.being the most predominant fungal contaminant.The study further showed that vanillin had significant inhibitory activity against the growth of the fungi species.The cell number,radical colony diameter,and the mycelium biomass of the fungal contaminant were significantly reduced by the inhibitory action of the vanillin.The study thus provides reliable data evidence that will help relevant stakeholders in the fermented milk industries to improve their quality control strategies and consider vanillin as a bio-preservative with the potential to increase the shelf-life and safety of fermented milk.

Unprecedented divergent synthesis of gem-difluorovinylacetic acid and glutaric acid derivatives fromα-CF_(3)alkenes with formate as the carbonyl source was disclosed.The reaction can undergo selective mono-or triple C-F bond cleavage by simply switching the photocatalyst and hydrogen atom transfer(HAT)catalyst under visible-light-induced conditions at room temperature.Foramte acts as both the C1 source and the reductant through the generation of CO_(2)^(·-)species,which underwent Giese radical addition to electron-deficient alkenes to trigger the consecutive C-F bond cleavage and carboxylation process.

Preparation of Porous Polylactide Microspheres and Their Application in Tissue Engineering

In this study, porous polylactide（PLA） microspheres with different structures were prepared through the multiple emulsion solvent evaporation method. By changing organic solvents（ethyl acetate and chloroform） and adding effervescent salt NH4 HCO3 in the inner water phase, microspheres with porous capsular, matrix, microcapsular and multivesicular structures were prepared. The protein encapsulation and release, and the cell growth behavior of porous microspheres were further explored. Under the same inner water phase, microspheres prepared with chloroform had higher protein encapsulation efficiency and less protein release rate as compared with those prepared with ethyl acetate. Cell experiments showed that the relatively rough surface of microspheres prepared with chloroform was more favorable for the cell growth in comparison with the smooth surface of microspheres prepared with ethyl acetate. This study shows a simple and effective method to control the protein release and cell growth behaviors of polymer microspheres by tuning their porous structure.

The new magnetic degree of freedom provided by the noncollinear structure plays an important role in the development of spintronic devices.In this work,we conducted a systematic study on the magnetic and electrical transport properties of the hexagonal noncollinear ferromagnetic MnFeGe alloy.Abnormal Hall effect and moderate magnetoresistance(MR)were observed below the Curie temperature(~200 K)of MnFeGe,in both bulk and thin-film forms.Notably,the perpendicular MR in all samples firstly grows,then quasi-linearly descends with magnetic field increasing,making an irregular M-type MR in the low-field region.It is speculated that the abnormal MR is related to the magnetic domain change,and combined with micromagnetic simulations,the labyrinth domain and sparse bubble formation are verified to exist in MnFeGe.Our work offers an understanding of the lowfield-positive MR in a ferromagnet,as well as raises the possibility of magnetic bubble formation in this noncollinear system.

A high-sensitivity H2S gas sensor based on optimized ZnO-ZnS nano-heterojunction sensing material

This paper reports a high-performance H2S gas sensing material that is made of ZnO nanowires(NWs)modified by an optimal amount of ZnS to form nano-hete rojunctions.Compared with the intrinsic ZnONWs,the three differently modified nano-heterostructure material ZnO-ZnS-x(x=5,10,15)shows significant improvement in sensing performance to H2S at the working temperatures of 100-400℃,especially in the low temperature range(<300℃).The chemiresistive sensor with ZnO-ZnS-10 sensingmaterial exhibits the largest response signal to H2S among all the other ZnO-ZnS-x(x=5,10,15,20)sensors.Its response signal to 5 ppm H2S at 150℃is about 2.7 times to that of the ZnO-NWs sensor.Besides,the ZnO-ZnS-10 sensor also features satisfactory selectivity and repeatability at 150℃.With the technical advantage attributed to the reduction of the redesigned band gap at the interface between ZnO and ZnS,the ZnO-ZnS hete ro structure sensor rather than the traditional ZnO-NWs sensor can be used for high-sensitivity application at low working temperature.

Ethnopharmacology,chemodiversity,and bioactivity of Cephalotaxus medicinal plants

Cephalotaxus is the only genus of Cephalotaxaceae family,and its natural resources are declining due to habitat fragmentation,excessive exploitation and destruction.In many areas of China,folk herbal doctors traditionally use Cephalotaxus plants to treat innominate swollen poison,many of which are cancer.Not only among Han people,but also among minority ethnic groups,Cephalotaxus is used to treat various diseases,e.g.,cough,internal bleeding and cancer in Miao medicine,bruises,rheumatism and pain in Yao medicine,and ascariasis,hookworm disease,scrofula in She medicine,etc.Medicinal values of some Cephalotaxus species and compounds are acknowledged officially.However,there is a lack of comprehensive review summarizing the ethnomedicinal knowledge o f Cephalotaxus,relevant medicinal phytometabolites and their bioactivities.The research progresses in ethnopharmacology,chemodiversity,and bioactivities of Cephalotaxus medicinal plants are reviewed and commented here.Knowledge gaps are pinpointed and future research directions are suggested.Classic medicinal books,folk medicine books,herbal manuals and ethnomedicinal publications were reviewed for the genus Cephalotaxus(Sanjianshan in Chinese).The relevant data about ethnobotany,phytochemistry,and pharmacology were collected as comprehensively as possible from online databases including Scopus,NCBI PubMed,Bing Scholar,and China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI).44 Cephalotaxus"',and the respective species name were used as keywords in database search.The obtained articles of the past six decades were collated and analyzed.Four Cephalotaxus species are listed in the official medicinal book in China.They are used as ethnomedicines by many ethnic groups such as Miao,Yao,dong,She and Han.Inspirations are obtained from traditional applications,and Cephalotaxus phytometabolites are developed into anticancer reagents.Cephalotaxine-type alkaloids,homoerythrina-type alkaloids and homoharringtonine(HHT)are abundant in Cephalotaxus,e.g.,C.lanceolata,C.fortunei var.alpina,C.

Associations between Borg's rating of perceived exertion and changes in urinary organic acid metabolites after outdoor weightbearing hiking

BACKGROUND Developing methods to monitor exercise load and evaluate body fatigue and muscle injury over time in hiking training remains a key problem to be solved.A widely used psycho-physical tool to assess the subjective perception of effort during exercise is Borg’s rating of perceived exertion(BRPE)scale.Data on the relationships and validity of the BRPE compared to objectively assessed metabolic criteria are still lacking,especially urinary organic acid concentrations.AIM To verify whether the BRPE scale could be used in the prescription of outdoor hiking with weight-bearing and reveal the relationship between the BRPE scale and urinary physiological measures.METHODS Eighty-nine healthy men(average age:22 years)were enrolled in a 40 km(6 h)hiking training exercise with a 20 kg load.After training,the BRPE scale(6-20)was completed.All participants were divided into three groups according to the rating of the BRPE scale.Urine samples were collected before and after training.Urinary myoglobin levels were measured immediately using the fluorescent immunoassay method.The remaining urine was subpacked and frozen for the subsequent detection of urinary organic acids using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.RESULTS The contents of organic acids and myoglobin in urine were significantly increased after participants hiked 40 km(6 h)with a 20 kg load.Only orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis performed well in separating the group with a BRPE score of 6-12 from the group with a BRPE score of 13-20.Significant differences in the urine levels of several organic acids were observed between the two groups,and the heatmap also presented different metabolic profiles based on BRPE.According to the standard of a variable importance in the projection>1,fold change>1.5 and P<0.05,19 different metabolites of urinary organic acids were screened and enriched in pathways mainly including the citrate cycle(tricarboxylic acid cycle)and alanine,aspartate and glucose metabolism.CONCLUSION The BRPE scale identifi

Proper treatment of acidleaching tailings(ALTs)of vanadiumbearing stone coal minerals is of great urgency.One approach is adding it into the raw materials during the preparation of lightweight aggregate(LWA).But clay is always needed.In this paper,another solid waste,red mud,was mixed with ALTs as a source of flux components instead of clay.Evaluation of the physical characteristics,morphological structures,as well as crystal phases during the sintering process were investigated.When their mixtures with a proper ratio were sintered at 1080℃,a glassy phase with certain viscosity was formed,and the gases generated simultaneously were encapsulated by the melt.Finally,LWA with a onehour water absorption as low as 1.46%,a bulk density as low as 728.76 kgm 3 and a compressive strength as high as 10.77 MPa was fabricated.

Recent progress about 2D metal dichalcogenides: Synthesis and application in photodetectors

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered metal dichalcogenides (MDCs) have received enormous attention on account of their excellent optoelectronic properties. Especially, various MDCs can be constructed into vertical/lateral heterostructures with many novel optical and electrical properties, exhibiting great potential for the application in photodetectors. Therefore, the batch production of 2D MDCs and their heterostructures is crucial for the practical application. Recently, the vapour phase methods have been proved to be dependable for growing large-scale MDCs and related heterostructures with high quality. In this paper, we summarize the latest progress about the synthesis of 2D MDCs and their heterostructures by vapour phase methods. Particular focus is paid to the control of influence factors during the vapour phase growth process. Furthermore, the application of MDCs and their heterostructures in photodetectors with outstanding performance is also outlined. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future application are presented.
