Remarkable carbon dioxide catalytic capture (CDCC) leading to solid-form carbon material via a new CVD integrated process (CVD-IP): An alternative route for CO_2 sequestration

Through our newly-developed ＂chemical vapor deposition integrated process （ISVD-IP）＇＂ using carbon OlOXlae （t..u2） as me raw matenal and only carbon source introduced, CO2 could be catalytically activated and converted to a new solid-form product, i.e., carbon nanotubes （CO2-derived） at a quite high yield （the single-pass carbon yield in the solid-form carbon-product produced from CO2 catalytic capture and conversion was more than 30% at a single-pass carbon-base）. For comparison, when only pure carbon dioxide was introduced using the conventional CVD method without integrated process, no solid-form carbon-material product could be formed. In the addition of saturated steam at room temperature in the feed for CVD, there were much more end-opening carbon nano-tubes produced, at a slightly higher carbon yield. These inspiring works opened a remarkable and alternative new approach for carbon dioxide catalytic capture to solid-form product, comparing with that of CO2 sequestration （CCS） or CO2 mineralization （solidification）, etc. As a result, there was much less body volume and almost no greenhouse effect for this solid-form carbon-material than those of primitive carbon dioxide.

The stability of lead halide perovskite quantum dots （PQDs） was improved by embedding them in carboxybenzene microcrystals. The resulting needle-shaped mixed microcrystals preserved the strong photoluminescence of the PQDs. Compared with previously reported polystyrene-encapsulated PQDs, the carboxybenzene crystals were robust and protected the dots from moisture and photodegradation. The enhanced stability was attributed to the tight matrix of carboxybenzene microcrystals, which protected the PQDs from moisture. This versatile strategy protected various QDs, including all-inorganic PQDs and chalcogenide QDs （e.g., CdSe/ZnS QDs and CuInS/ZnS QDs）. It provides a facile and versatile method of protecting PQDs and may enable applications in solid-state systems with high color quality requirements such as displays, lasers, and light emitting diodes.

Photosynthesis and biochemical responses to elevated O_3 in Plantago major and Sonchus oleraceus growing in a lowland habitat of northern China

A field experiment was carried out to compare the responses to ozone （03） in two common herbaceous plant species, Plantago major L. and Sonchus oleraceus L., by building open-top growth chambers in situ to simulate 03 stress （＋03, 85 ± 5 ppb, 9 hr/day for 30 days） in a lowland habitat in Inner Mongolia, Northern China. Responses to 03 of gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, leaf pigment content, andoxidant capability, soluble protein content, membrane lipid peroxidation and dark respiration （Rd） were analyzed. Results showed that elevated 03 exposure significantly reduced the light-saturated net photosyn- thesis （PNsat）, stomata] conductance （gs） and transpiration rate （e） in both species. Although non-significant interactive effect between species and 0s on PNsat was analyzed, the reduction in PNsat in S. oleraceus might be due primarily to the higher fraction of close PSII reaction centers and impaired activities of plant mesophyll cells as evidences by decreased maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry after dark adapted state （Fv/Fm） and unchanged intercellular CO2 concentration （Ci）. Besides, biochemical analysis showed that S. oleraceus had lower antioxidant ability compared to P. major. As a result, S. oleraceus was damaged to the larger extent in terms of lipid peroxidation and visible O3 injury, indicating that S. oleraceus was more sensitive to O3 than P. major. Our results indicated that wild herbaceous plant species growing in a lowland habitat in sandy grassland were sensitive to O3 stress and S. oleraceus can be considered as one of the bio-indicators for high O3 concentration in semi-arid -rassland of northern China.

The effect of sintering dispersed and bulk,low molecular weight(M_n=50,000 Da),nano-emulsionpolytetrafluoroethylene(PTFe)particles near their melting point is *** the nascent particles consisting of ca.75 nm diameter,hexagonal,single crystals,sintering at,e.g.,350℃,results,initially,in merger of neighboring particles,followed by individual molecular motion on the substrate and the formation of folded chain,lamellar single crystals andspherulites,and on-edge *** is suggested these structures develop,with time,in the mesomorphic“melt”.Sintering ofthe bulk resin yields extended chain,band structures,as well as folded chain lamellae;end-surface to end-surface merger,possibly by end-to-end polymerization,occurs with increasing time.

PIV measurements of turbulent jets issuing from triangular and circular orifice plates

The present study experimentally investigated the near-field flow mixing characteristics of two turbulent jets issuing from equilateral triangular and circular orifice plates into effectively unbounded surroundings,*** particle image velocimetry(PIV) was applied to measure the velocity field at the same Reynolds number of Re=50,000,where Re = UeDe /with Ue being the exit bulk velocity and the kinematic viscosity of fluid,D e the equivalent *** instantaneous velocity,mean velocity,Reynolds stresses were *** the mean velocity field,the centreline velocity decay rate and half-velocity width were *** the mixing characteristics of the two jets,it is found that the triangular jet has a faster mixing rate than the circular *** triangular jet entrainments with the ambient fluid at a higher rate in the near *** is evidenced by a shorter unmixed core,faster Reynolds stress and centreline turbulence intensity *** primary coherent structures in the near field are found to break down more rapidly in the triangular jet as compared to the circular *** the entire measurement region,the triangular jet maintained a higher rate of decay and ***,all components of Reynolds stress of the triangular jet appear to reach their peaks earlier,and then decay more rapidly than those of the circular *** addition,the axis-switching phenomenon is observed in the triangular jet.

Unified analytical solutions for a circular opening based on non-linear unified failure criterion

Unified analytical solutions are presented for the predictions of the stresses and displacements around a circular opening based on non-linear unified failure criterion and the elastic-brittle-plastic softening *** analytical solutions not only involve generally traditional solutions which are based on the Hoek-Brown (H-B) failure criterion or the non-linear twin-shear failure criterion,but also involve other new *** results of the radius of plastic zone,radial displacements and stresses are obviously different using three rock masses when different values of the unified failure criterion parameter or different material behavior models are *** a given condition,the radius of plastic zone and radial displacements are reduced by increasing the unified failure criterion *** latent potentialities of rock mass result from considering the effect of intermediate principal *** is shown that proper choices of the failure criterion and the material behavior model for rock mass are significant in the tunnel design.

A cross-layer approach to enable multipacket transmission in MIMO-SDMA based WLAN

We propose a medium access control(MAC) protocol for uplink transmissions in wireless local area networks(WLANs),where both stations and access points(APs) are equipped with multiple antennas. The protocol solves some common problems in utilizing multiple input multiple output(MIMO) under the 802.11 protocol,e.g.,how to deploy preamble(training sequence) used for channel estimation and how to enable simultaneous data transmissions,and facilitates two simultaneous uplink data transmissions via a cross-layer approach. Furthermore,we develop a 3D discrete-time Markov model to analyze the per-formance of the proposed WLAN scheme. The analytical results are verified by simulation,and numerical results show that the system throughput can be significantly improved by our proposed scheme as compared with conventional schemes.

Computational modeling methods have been increasingly employed to quantify aortic hemodynamic parameters that are challenging to in vivo measurements but important for the diagnosis/treatment of aortic *** the presence of turbulence-like behaviors of blood flow in normal or diseased aorta has long been confirmed,the majority of existing computational model studies adopted the laminar flow assumption(LFA)in the treatment of sub-grid flow *** far,it remains unclear whether LFA would significantly compromise the reliability of hemodynamic *** the present study,we addressed the issue in the context of a specific aortopathy,namely aortic dilation,which is usually accompanied by disturbed flow *** patient-specific aortas with treated/untreated dilation of the ascending segment were investigated,and their geometrical models were reconstructed from computed tomography angiographic images,with the boundary conditions being prescribed based on flow velocity information measured in vivo with the phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging *** the modeling of blood flow,apart from the traditional LFA-based method in which sub-grid flow dynamics is ignored,the large eddy simulation(LeS)method capable of incorporating the dissipative energy loss induced by turbulent eddies at the sub-grid level,was adopted and taken as a reference for examining the performance of the LFA-based *** results showed that the simulated large-scale flow patterns with the two methods had high similarity,both agreeing well with in vivo measurements,although locally large between-method discrepancies in computed hemodynamic quantities existed in regions with high intensity of flow ***,a switch from the LeS to the LFAbased modeling method led to mild(es in computed space-averaged wall shear stress metrics(i.e.,SA-TAWSS,SA-OSI)in the ascending aortic segment where intensive vortex evolution accompanied by high stat
