Exploiting push-pull strategy to combat the tea green leafhopper based on volatiles of Lavandula angustifolia and Flemingia macrophylla

Thirteen volatile compounds were identified from Flemingia macrophylla plants. Eight major components significantly attracted the tea green leafhoppers, Empoasca flavescens F. Based on their relative abundances, following synthetic blends were made for field experiments: 1) eight-component-attractant blend included Z-3-hexen-1-ol, Z-3-hexenyl acetate, Z-ocimene, Me SA, Z-3-hexenyl butyrate, dodecane, hexadecane and nonanal at 10, 10, 1, 11, 2, 6, 2 and 4 mg mL^-1 in n-hexane, respectively;2) four-component-attractant blend #1 contained hexadecane, Z-3-hexenyl acetate, Z-3-hexen-1-ol and nonanal at 2, 10, 10 and 4 mg mL^-1 in n-hexane, respectively;3) four-component-attractant blend #2 contained hexadecane, Z-3-hexenyl acetate, Z-3-hexen-1-ol and Me SA at 2, 10, 10 and 11 mg mL^-1 in n-hexane, respectively. Thymol and 1-methoxy-4-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)-benzene, identified from Lavandula angustifolia aeration samples, significantly repelled the leafhopper as strong repellents when tested alone or in combination at 10 mg mL^-1. For field bioassays, each attractant lure was attached to a bud green sticky board hung from a bamboo stick at above tea plant level for catching the leafhoppers, whereas the repellent dispenser was tied to a tea branch inside tea clump for pushing the leafhoppers away from tea clumps. The results showed that the eight-component-attractant blend caught similar numbers of the leafhopper as did the four-component-attractant blend #1 at about 53–79 leafhoppers/trap/day, which were significantly higher than those on the hexane-control bud green sticky boards. Average leafhopper catches from un-baited sticky boards were about 51–73 leafhoppers/trap/day when pushed by the repellents placed inside tea plants, with the two-component-repellent blend being more effective than their single components. When the two-component-repellent blend was further tested with the three attractant blends in a push-pull fashion, average trap catches ranged from 62 to 9

Effect of Phopshate Fertilizer and Manure on Crop Yield, Soil P Accumulation, and the Environmental Risk Assessment

Phosphorus （P） applied from fertilizer and manure is important in increasing crop yield and soil fertility; however, excessive uses of phosphate fertilizer and manure may also increase P loss from agricultural soils, posing environmental impact. A long term experiment was conducted on a calcareous soil （meadow cinnamon） in Hebei Province, China, from 2003 to 2006 to investigate the effects of phosphate fertilizer and manure on the yield of Chinese cabbage, soil P accumulation, P sorption saturation, soluble P in runoff water, and P leaching. P fertilizer （P2O5） application at a rate of 360 kg ha^-1 or manure of 150 t ha^-1 significantly increased Chinese cabbage yield as compared to the unfertilized control. However, no significant yield response was found with excessive phosphate or manure application. Soil Olsen-P, soluble P, bioavailable P, the degree of phosphorus sorption saturation in top soil layer （0-20 cm）, and soluble P in runoff water increased significantly with the increase of phosphate fertilizer and manure application rates, whereas the maximum phosphorus sorption capacity （Qm） decreased with the phosphate fertilizer and manure application rates. Soil Olsen-P and soluble P also increased significantly in the sub soil layer （20-40 cm） with the high P fertilizer and manure rates. It indicates that excessive P application over crop demand can lead to a high environmental risk owing to the enrichment of soil Olsen-P, soluble P, bioavailable P, and the degree of phosphorus sorption saturation in agricultural soils.

Analysis of floral scent emitted from Syringa plants

Syringa is an important aromatic woody angiosperm that is widely planted in gardens. Its dry flowers are traditionally used to manufacture infusions and spices in China. In this study, the floral volatiles emitted from nine different Syringa species and varieties, viz. S. chinensis, S. protolaciniata, S. oblata, S. oblata var. giraldii, S. oblata var. plena, S. vulgaris ＇Mrs Harry Bickle＇, S. vulgaris ＇Bright Centennial＇, S. vulgaris ＇White Spires＇, and S. vulgaris ＇President Lincoln＇ were collected by the dynamic headspace technique, and then identified by automated thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. There were significant differences in components and corresponding contents of floral scent emitted from the nine Syringa species and varieties. Among the detected components, β-ocimene exhibited the highest content, accounting for more than 70 % of the floral scent of S. protolaciniata, S. oblata var. giraldii, and S. vulgaris ＇Bright Centennial＇. A significant daytime variation of floral scent emitted from S. pekinensis was recorded, especially for benzaldehyde, whose content first increased and then decreased. We studied the scent emitted from the in vitro flowers of S. vulgaris ＇Pres Lincoln＇ during the process of natural drying. Alcohol compounds were released in the greatest content, and the content of 2-ethyl-l-hexanol accounted for about 40 % of the total release amount. The results described the emission pattern and mechanisms of floral scent in Syringa.

Alleviating the sluggish kinetics of all-solid-state batteries via cathode single-crystallization and multi-functional interface modification

The application of Li-rich Mn-based cathodes, the most promising candidates for high-energy-density Liion batteries, in all-solid-state batteries can further enhance the safety and stability of battery ***, the utilization of high-capacity Li-rich cathodes has been limited by sluggish kinetics and severe interfacial issues in all-solid-state batteries. Here, a multi-functional interface modification strategy involving dispersed submicron single-crystal structure and multi-functional surface modification layer obtained through in-situ interfacial chemical reactions was designed to improve the electrochemical performance of Li-rich Mn-based cathodes in all-solid-state batteries. The design of submicron single-crystal structure promotes the interface contact between the cathode particles and the solid-state electrolyte,and thus constructs a more complete ion and electron conductive network in the composite ***, the Li-gradient layer and the lithium molybdate coating layer constructed on the surface of single-crystal Li-rich particles accelerate the transport of Li ions at the interface, suppress the side reactions between cathodes and electrolyte, and inhibit the oxygen release on the cathode surface. The optimized Li-rich cathode materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in halide all-solid-state batteries. This study emphasizes the vital importance of reaction kinetics and interfacial stability of Lirich cathodes in all-solid-state batteries and provides a facile modification strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state batteries based on Li-rich cathodes.

Influence of HBcAg in liver cell plasma on expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 in liver tissue of low-grade chronic hepatitis B patients

AIM： To study the influence of HBcAg on the expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 （TGF-131） in liver tissue of low-grade chronic hepatitis B （CHB） patients. METHODS： The expression of T（3F-β1 and HBcAg in liver samples from 93 low-grade CHB patients was detected by immunohistochemistry and valuated by semi-quantitative scoring. RESULTS： In the 93 low-grade CHB patients, HBcAg was expressed in cell plasma but not in the liver tissue. There was no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION： The expression of TGF-β1 is not related with HBcAg expressed as plasma type in the tissues of low-grade CHB patients.

A novel BINOL-based fluorescence probe(S)-6 featuring a sodium sulfonate fragment at the 2'-position was designed and synthesized via simple synthetic procedures under mild reaction *** watersoluble probe(S)-6 displays excellent enantioselective recognition toward 15 common amino acids,and it can be used for enantiomeric excess determination of amino *** fluorescence intensity of(S)-6 treated with amino acids reaches the maximum after standing for only 30 min at room temperature and remains stable in the following 5.5 h,which has great potential in the application of chiral fluorescence analysis due to its timeliness and outstanding fluorescent stability.

A low prevalence of H pylori and endoscopic findings in HIV-positive Chinese patients with gastrointestinal symptoms

AIM： To compare the prevalence of H pylori infection, peptic ulcer, cytomegalovirus （CNV） infection and Candida esophagitis in human immunodeficiency virus （HIV）- positive and HIV-negative patients, and evaluate the impact of CD4 lymphocyte on H pylori and opportunistic infections. METHODS： A total of 151 patients （122 HIV-positive and 29 HIV-negative） with gastrointestinal symptoms were examined by upper endoscopy and biopsy. Samples were assessed to determine the prevalence of Hpylori infection, CMV, candida esophagitis and histologic chronic gastritis. RESULTS： The prevalence of Hpylori was less common in HIV-positive patients （22.1%） than in HIV-negative controls （44.8%; P 〈 0.05）, and the prevalence of H pylori displayed a direct correlation with CD4 count stratification in HIV-positive patients. In comparison with HIV-negative group, HIV-positive patients had a lower incidence of peptic ulcer （20.7% vs 4.1%; P 〈 0.01）, but a higher prevalence of chronic atrophy gastritis （6.9% vs 24.6%; P 〈 0.05）, Candida esophagitis and CMV infection. Unlike HIV-negative group, H pylori infection had a close relationship to chronic active gastritis （P 〈 0.05）. In HIV-positive patients, chronic active gastritis was not significantly different between those with Hpylori infection and those without. CONCLUSION： The lower prevalence of H pylori infection and peptic ulcer in HIV-positive patients with gastrointestinal symptoms suggests a different mechanism of peptic ulcerogenesis and a different role of H pylori infection in chronic active gastritis and peptic ulcer. The pathogen of chronic active gastritis in HIV-positive patients may be different from the general population that is closely related to Hpylori infection.

Antibacterial wound dressing can benefit the wound healing by preventing bacterial infection,especially for the electrospun ones due to their porous structures and easily loading antibacterial ***,it is challenging to apply the antibacterial electrospun wound dressing to covering the wound conveniently and ***,we presented one step fabrication and application of antibacterial electrospun zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing via a handheld electrospinning *** prepared zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing showed gas permeability of(76.1-5.45)mm/s,hydrophilicity with zero body fluid contact angle,swelling stability after 24 h as well as antibacterial zones over 5 cm against both *** and *** ***,in situ electrospinning process can deposit the electrospun zein/cinnamon oil fibers directly onto the wound,meantime forming a wound *** mice cut-wound model experiment demonstrated that the one step in situ fabrication and application of zein/cinnamon oil wound dressing could nearly heal the wound within 11 d.
