Comparison of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in the treatment of hypercoagulability secondary to traumatic infection

Purpose: To compare the effects and side-effects of fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied with traumatic infection. Methods: Thirty-six patients with post-traumatic infections in our hospital intensive care center were diagnosed with hypercoagulability from February 2012 to February 2013. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. In group F (18 patients), the patients were treated with fondaparinux sodium, 2.5 mg, 1/d for 11 d. In group L (18 patients), the patients were treated with low molecular weight heparin, 4100 U, 1/12 h for 11 d. The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, bleeding events and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and mortality of two groups after anticoagulation therapy were analyzed. Fibrinogen, D-dimer level and activity of antithrombin III were measured by the coagulation analyzer. Results: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis, MODS incidence and mortality were not significantly different between the two groups. The rate of bleeding evens in group F was lower than group L ( p 0.05). D-dimer was significantly decreased after anticoagulant therapy for 5 d ( p 0.05). Conclusion: Fondaparinux sodium and low molecular weight heparin can effectively improve coagulopathy in patients with traumatic infection. Compared with low molecular weight heparin, fondaparinux sodium may reduce the risk of bleeding events in patients with hypercoagulability accompanied by traumatic infection.

Numerical simulation and scaling analysis of elasticity-induced lift force in a viscoelastic fluid between confining surfaces

How to accurately characterize the lift force on the particles near the solid surfaces is an ongoing challenge in fluid mechanics and microfluidic techniques, especially in a complex system with viscoelastic fluid or/and soft surface that is commonly encountered in a biological system. The motions of the particles in vicinity of a surface can be simplified to be a rigid cylinder surrounded by the viscoelastic fluid moving along a substrate which can be rigid or soft according to different cases. In such an inertial free system with a wide range of Weissenberg number (Wi < 5.00, representing the ratio of the elastic force to the viscous force), firstly we numerically evaluate the influence of the systematic parameters, including the polymer viscosity, the geometry and Wi, on the net normal force for a cylinder closely moving along a rigid substrate, and the elasticity-induced lift force in a scaled form. It is shown that a strong shear arises in the viscoelastic confinement between the moving cylinder and the rigid substrate, it leads to the asymmetry of the first normal stress distribution around the cylinder, and thus the lift force. Then, the influence of a soft substrate on the lift force is considered, and we find that the lift force induced by the viscoelastic fluid always dominates in magnitude over that induced by the soft substrate deformation. This work provides a reliable scaling that can be utilized to quantify the elasticity-induced lift force on the particles in a viscoelastic system, such as the micro- and nanofluidic systems in biological applications.

In this paper,observer-based control for fractional-order singular systems with orderα(0<α<1)and input delay is studied.On the basis of the Smith predictor and approximation error,the system with input delay is approximately equivalent to the system without input delay.Furthermore,based on the linear matrix inequality(LMI)technique,the necessary and sufficient condition of observer-based control is proposed.Since the condition is a nonstrict LMI,including the equality constraint,it will lead to some trouble when solving problems using toolbox.Thus,the strict LMI-based condition is improved in the paper.Finally,a numerical example and a direct current motor example are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the strict LMI-based condition.

A three-dimensional robust volume-of-fluid solver based on the adaptive mesh refinement

The present study provides a three-dimensional volume-of-fluid method based on the adaptive mesh refinement technique.The projection method on the adaptive mesh is introduced for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.The octree structure mesh is employed to solve the flow velocities and the pressure.The developed solver is applied to simulate the deformation of the cubic droplet driven by the surface tension without the effect of the gravity.The numerical results well predict the shape evolution of the droplet.

Mechanical stretching of 3D hydrogels for neural stem cell differentiation

While it is known that mechanical dynamics are influential in neural differentiation for critical processes like neurogenesis or neurodegeneration, studies on neural stem cell therapies usually focus on biochemical interactions rather than mechanical aspects, frequently resulting in low efficacy and unfulfilled potential. Therefore, current studies are attempting to elucidate the effect of mechanical stimulus on neural performance using conventional two-dimensional(2D) planar substrates. Yet, these2D substrates fail to capture the defining three-dimensional(3D) characteristics of the in vivo neural stem cell environment.To complete this research gap, we synthesized a series of soft and elastic 3D hydrogels to mimic the neural tissue mechanical environment for 3D cell culture, using long-chain polyethylene glycol diacrylate(PEGDA) and gelatin-methacryloyl(Gel MA).By varying the concentration of the polymer, we obtained biomimicking hydrogels with a tensile modulus as low as 10 k Pa and a compressive modulus as low as 0.8 k Pa. The in vitro results demonstrated that Gel MA-PEGDA hydrogels have the high biocompatibility required to support neural cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation, as well as neurite outgrowth. We then studied the effect of mechanical stretching on the behaviors of neural cells and observed that mechanical stretching could significantly enhance neurite extension and axon elongation. In addition, the neurites were more directionally oriented to the stretching direction. Immunocytochemistry and relative gene expression data also suggested that mechanical tension could upregulate the expression of neural differentiation protein and genes, including GFAP and βIII-Tubulin. Overall, this study shows that in addition to the specific mechanical properties of Gel MA-PEGDA that improve neural differentiation towards specific lineages, hydrogel stretching is also a potentially attractive strategy to improve the therapeutic outcomes of neural stem cell therapies.

Iodopentafluorosulfanylation of [1.1.1]propellane and further functionalizations

Pentafluorosulfanylated(SF_(5^(-))) aromatics have shown great potential in drugs, and the bioisosteric replacement of aromatic ring with bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane(BCP) unit has attracted considerable attention recently. Consequently, pentafluorosulfanylated bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes(SF_(5^(-))BCPs) should have application in the realm of drug discovery. In this study, a one-pot iodopentafluorosulfanylation of [1.1.1]propellane with SF_(5)Cl and CH_(2)I_(2)for the practical synthesis of iodopentafluorosulfanylated bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane(SF_(5^(-))BCP-I) was developed. SF_(5^(-))BCP-I was the first example of SF_(5^(-))BCPs that could be transformed. The first general method to access SF_(5^(-))substituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane derivatives was demonstrated through photoredox-catalyzed radical addition of SF_(5^(-))BCP-I to alkenes and alkynes.

Integrating field images and microclimate data to realize multi-day ahead forecasting of maize crop coverage using CNN-LSTM

Crop coverage(CC)is an important parameter to represent crop growth characteristics,and the ahead forecasting of CC is helpful to track crop growth trends and guide agricultural management decisions.In this study,a novel CNN-LSTM model that combined the advantages of convolutional neural network(CNN)in feature extraction and long short-term memory(LSTM)in time series processing was proposed for multi-day ahead forecasting of maize CC.Considering the influence of climate change on maize growth,five microclimatic factors were combined with historical maize CC estimated from field images as the input variables of the forecasting model.The field experimental data of four observation points for more than three years were used to evaluate the performance of CNN-LSTM at the forecasting horizon of three to seven days ahead and compared the forecasting results to CNN and LSTM.The results demonstrated that CNN-LSTM obtained the lowest RMSE and the highest R2 at all forecasting horizons.Subsequently,the performance of CNN-LSTM under univariate(historical maize CC)and multivariate(historical maize CC+microclimatic factors)input was compared,and the results indicated that additional microclimatic factors were effective in improving the forecasting performance.Furthermore,the 3-day ahead forecasting results of CNN-LSTM in different growth stages of maize were also analyzed,and the results showed that the highest forecasting accuracy was obtained in the seven leaves stage.Therefore,CNN-LSTM can be considered a useful tool to forecast maize CC.

Microcurvature landscapes induce neural stem cell polarity and enhance neural differentiation

Tissue curvature has long been recognized as an important anatomical parameter that affects intracellular behaviors,and there is emerging interest in applying cell-scale curvature as a designer property to drive cell fates for tissue engineering purposes.Although neural cells are known to undergo dramatic and terminal morphological changes during development and curvature-limiting behaviors have been demonstrated in neurite outgrowth studies,there are still crucial gaps in understanding neural cell behaviors,particularly in the context of a three-dimensional(3D)curvature landscape similar to an actual tissue engineering scaffold.In this study,we fabricated two substrates of microcurvature(curvature-substrates)that present a smooth and repeating landscape with focuses of either a concave or a convex pattern.Using these curvature-substrates,we studied the properties of morphological differentiation in N2a neuroblastoma cells.In contrast to other studies where two-dimensional(2D)curvature was demonstrated to limit neurite outgrowth,we found that both the concave and convex substrates acted as continuous and uniform mechanical protrusions that significantly enhanced neural polarity and differentiation with few morphological changes in the main cell body.This enhanced differentiation was manifested in various properties,including increased neurite length,increased nuclear displacement,and upregulation of various neural markers.By demonstrating how the micron-scale curvature landscape induces neuronal polarity,we provide further insights into the design of biomaterials utilizing the influence of surface curvature in neural tissue engineering.
