Prevention strategies of postoperative adhesion in soft tissues by applying biomaterials:Based on the mechanisms of occurrence and development of adhesions

Postoperative adhesion(POA)widely occurs in soft tissues and usually leads to chronic pain,dysfunction of adjacent organs and some acute complications,seriously reducing patients’quality of life and even being life-threatening.Except for adhesiolysis,there are few effective methods to release existing adhesion.However,it requires a second operation and inpatient care and usually triggers recurrent adhesion in a great incidence.Hence,preventing POA formation has been regarded as the most effective clinical strategy.Biomaterials have attracted great attention in preventing POA because they can act as both barriers and drug carriers.Nevertheless,even though much reported research has been demonstrated their efficacy on POA inhibition to a certain extent,thoroughly preventing POA formation is still challenging.Meanwhile,most biomaterials for POA prevention were designed based on limited experiences,not a solid theoretical basis,showing blindness.Hence,we aimed to provide guidance for designing anti-adhesion materials applied in different soft tissues based on the mechanisms of POA occurrence and development.We first classified the postoperative adhesions into four categories according to the different components of diverse adhesion tissues,and named them as“membranous adhesion”,“vascular adhesion”,“adhesive adhesion”and“scarred adhesion”,respectively.Then,the process of the occurrence and development of POA were analyzed,and the main influencing factors in different stages were clarified.Further,we proposed seven strategies for POA prevention by using biomaterials according to these influencing factors.Meanwhile,the relevant practices were summarized according to the corresponding strategies and the future perspectives were analyzed.

The osteochondral defect repair has been most extensively studied due to the rising demand for new therapies to diseases such as osteoarthritis.Tissue engineering has been proposed as a promising strategy to meet the demand of simultaneous regeneration of both cartilage and subchondral bone by constructing integrated gradient tissue-engineered osteochondral scaffold(IGTEOS).This review brought forward the main challenges of establishing a satisfactory IGTEOS from the perspectives of the complexity of physiology and microenvironment of osteochondral tissue,and the limitations of obtaining the desired and required scaffold.Then,we comprehensively discussed and summarized the current tissue-engineered efforts to resolve the above challenges,including architecture strategies,fabrication techniques and in vitro/in vivo evaluation methods of the IGTEOS.Especially,we highlighted the advantages and limitations of various fabrication techniques of IGTEOS,and common cases of IGTEOS application.Finally,based on the above challenges and current research progress,we analyzed in details the future perspectives of tissue-engineered osteochondral construct,so as to achieve the perfect reconstruction of the cartilaginous and osseous layers of osteochondral tissue simultaneously.This comprehensive and instructive review could provide deep insights into our current understanding of IGTEOS.

Study on Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic exhumation of the Yanji area,NE China: insights from low-temperature thermochronology

The Yanji area,northeastern China,a part of the orogenic collage between the North China Block in the south and the Jiamusi-Khanka Massifs in the northeast,is the most likely location where the Pacific Plate subduction・related magmatic activities and subsequent exhumation processes occurred.Here,we report new low-temperature thermochronology of apatite and zircon data from the granitoid samples in the Yanji area.The exhumation rates of Tianfozhishan,Yanji area,were〜0.049 and〜0.073 mm/year,interpreted from the elevations and apatite and zircon fission track ages,respectively.The exhumation,integrated with the geological setting,suggested that the paleogeothermal gradient of the Tianfozhishan,even extending to the Yanji area,was possibly to be greater than 35℃/km in the Late Cretaceous.The thermal history modeling of the data indicates a basically similar pattern,but the various timing for different samples between the Oligocene-Early Miocene and the Middle Miocene in the Yanji area.We hence conclude that a fourstages of cooling,from〜6.7℃/Ma(during the Late Cretaceous),to〜0.8℃/Ma(during the Late Cretaceous to the Oligocene-Early Miocene),then to〜2-3℃/Ma with varied styles(between the Oligocene-Early Miocene and the Middle Miocene),and finally to3 km under a reasonable paleogeothermal gradient(>35℃/km),speculated from the possible exhumation rate of Tianfozhishan.Combined with the tectonic setting,this exhumation,including two stages of pronounced tectonic uplift and denudation and two stages of weak exhumation driven by the low regional erosion rate,is possibly related to the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate since the Late Cretaceous.This study used more robust evidence to propose higher paleogeothermal gradient(>35℃/km),reflecting exhumation of>3 km in the Yanji area since the Late Cretaceous.

Relative contributions of temperature and salinity to steric sea level over the South China Sea

The relative contributions of surface temperature and salinity to steric sea-level variations are investigated using satellite observations and reanalysis datasets.By defi ning a contribution factor,the relative roles of thermal and haline steric height variations are quantifi ed over the South China Sea(SCS).The thermosteric height dominates the steric sea level variation in the northern SCS deep basin,while the contribution of the halosteric height increases southward.Further investigation reveals that this transition is related to the meridional imbalance of surface heat flux and precipitation variations.The revealed steric constitution distribution is not confi ned to the surface but extends within the upper layer to approximately 50m depth,and then the thermosteric component dominates from the depth underneath.The results of this study clarify the steric sea level constitution over the SCS,benefit the understanding of sea-level variations at the regional scale,and may further facilitate multisensor remote sensing data mining studies.

One family of 13315 stable periodic orbits of non-hierarchical unequal-mass triple systems

The three-body problem can be traced back to Newton in 1687,but it is still an open question today.Note that only a few periodic orbits of three-body systems were found in 300 years after Newton mentioned this famous problem.Although triple systems are common in astronomy,practically all observed periodic triple systems are hierarchical(similar to the Sun,Earth and Moon).It has traditionally been believed that non-hierarchical triple systems would be unstable and thus should disintegrate into a stable binary system and a single star,and consequently stable periodic orbits of non-hierarchical triple systems have been expected to be rather scarce.However,we report here one family of 135445 periodic orbits of non-hierarchical triple systems with unequal masses;13315 among them are stable.Compared with the narrow mass range(only 10-5)in which stable"Figure-eight"periodic orbits of three-body systems exist,our newly found stable periodic orbits have fairly large mass region.We find that many of these numerically found stable non-hierarchical periodic orbits have mass ratios close to those of hierarchical triple systems that have been measured with astronomical observations.This implies that these stable periodic orbits of non-hierarchical triple systems with distinctly unequal masses quite possibly can be observed in practice.Our investigation also suggests that there should exist an infinite number of stable periodic orbits of non-hierarchical triple systems with distinctly unequal masses.Note that our approach has general meaning:in a similar way,every known family of periodic orbits of three-body systems with two or three equal masses can be used as a starting point to generate thousands of new periodic orbits of triple systems with distinctly unequal masses.

Genetic diversity is a cornerstone of crop improvement,However,cultivated soybean(Glycine max)has undergone several genetic bottlenecks,including domestication in China,the introduction of landraces to other areas of the world and,latterly,selective breeding,leading to low genetic diversity the poses a major obstacle to soybean improvement.By contrast,there remains a relatively high level of genetic diversity in soybean's wild relatives,especially the perennial soybeans(Glycine subgenus Glycine),which could serve as potential gene pools for improving soybean cultivars.Wild soybeans are phylogenetically diversified and adapted to various habitats,harboring resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses.Advances in genome and transcriptome sequencing enable alleles associated with desirable traits that were lost during domestication of soybean to be discovered in wild soybean.The collection and conservation of soybean wild relatives and the dissection of their genomic features will accelerate soybean breeding and facilitate sustainable agriculture and food production.

Geospatial social media(GSM)data has been increasingly used in public health due to its rich,timely,and accessible spatial information,particularly in infectious disease research.This review synthesized 86 research articles that use GSM data in infectious diseases published between December 2013 and March 2022.These articles cover 12 infectious disease types ranging from respiratory infectious diseases to sexually transmitted diseases with spatial levels varying from the neighborhood,county,state,and country.We categorized these studies into three major infectious disease research domains:surveillance,explanation,and prediction.With the assistance of advanced computing,statistical and spatial methods,GSM data has been widely and deeply applied to these domains,particularly in surveillance and explanation domains.We further identified four knowledge gaps in terms of contextual information use,application scopes,spatiotemporal dimension,and data limitations and proposed innovation opportunities for future research.Ourfindings will contribute to a better understanding of using GSM data in infectious diseases studies and provide insights into strategies for using GSM data more effectively in future research.

Clean numerical simulation:a new strategy to obtain reliable solutions of chaotic dynamic systems

It is well-known that chaotic dynamic systems, e.g., three-body system and turbulent flow, have sensitive dependence on the initial conditions(SDIC). Unfortunately,numerical noises, i.e., truncation error and round-off error, always exist in practice. Thus,due to the SDIC, the long-term accurate prediction of chaotic dynamic systems is practically impossible. In this paper, a new strategy for chaotic dynamic systems, i.e., the clean numerical simulation(CNS), is briefly described, and applied to a few Hamiltonian chaotic systems. With negligible numerical noises, the CNS can provide convergent(reliable) chaotic trajectories in a long enough interval of time. This is very important for Hamiltonian systems, and thus should have many applications in various fields. It is found that the traditional numerical methods in double precision cannot give not only reliable trajectories but also reliable Fourier power spectra and autocorrelation functions(ACFs). In addition, even the statistic properties of chaotic systems cannot be correctly obtained by means of traditional numerical algorithms in double precision, as long as these statistics are time-dependent. The CNS results strongly suggest that one had better be very careful on the direct numerical simulation(DNS) results of statistically unsteady turbulent flows, although DNS results often agree well with experimental data when the turbulent flow is in a statistical stationary state.
