Integrated wellbore-reservoir-geomechanics modeling for enhanced interpretation of distributed fiber-optic strain sensing data in hydraulicfracture analysis

Fiber-optic distributed strain sensing(FO-DSS)has been successful in monitoring strain changes along horizontal wellbores in hydraulically fractured ***,the mechanism driving the various FO-DSS responses associated with near-wellbore hydraulic fracture properties is still *** address this knowledge gap,we use coupled wellbore-reservoir-geomechanics simulations to study measured strain-change behavior and infer hydraulic fracture *** crossflow among fractures is captured through explicit modeling of the transient wellbore *** addition,local grid refinement is applied to accurately capture strain changes along the fiber.A Base Case model was designed with four fractures of varying properties,simulating strain change signals when the production well is shut-in for 10 d after 240 d of production and reopened for 2 ***-pressure plots for different fracture clusters were used to gain insights into inferring fracture properties using DSS *** comparing the model with and without the wellbore,distinct strain change signals were observed,emphasizing the importance of incorporating the wellbore in FO-DSS *** effects of fracture spacing and matrix permeability on strain change signals were thoroughly *** results of our numerical study can improve the understanding of the relation between DSS signals and fracture hydraulic properties,thus maximizing the value of the dataset for fracture diagnostics and characterization.

Emerging ferroelectric and antiferroelectric HfO_(2)-based thin films are attractive candidates for energy conversion and storage applications. In this work, the polar phase transformation between tetragonal and orthorhombic phases associated with ferroelectric or antiferroelectric behaviors is utilized to manipulate the electrocaloric cooling and energy storage performances in Zr-doped, woken up HfO_(2) ultrathin films. A giant electrocaloric temperature change of up to 11.85 K in Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2) with the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) state and a high energy storage density of 39.34 J/cm3 in the tetragonal phase-dominant Hf0.25Zr0.75O2 system are obtained. More interestingly, contrary to overdoping and excessive electric fields, an appropriate Zr concentration of 0.5 and an applicable driving field of 1.91 MV/cm are desired for the electrocaloric effect, resulting in an ultralow operating voltage as low as 1.3 V in this 6.8 nm thick Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2) film. These findings illustrate that the structural design strategy is a visible method for achieving optimal energy-related behaviors and highlight the great possibilities for building future energy-related devices.

High-Efficiency Dynamic Terahertz Deflector utilizing a Mechanically Tunable Metasurface

Terahertz (THz) wave manipulation, especially the beam deflection, plays an essential role in various applications, such as next-generation communication, space exploration, and high-resolution imaging. Current THz optical components and devices are hampered by their large bulk sizes and passive responses, limiting the development of high-performance, miniaturized THz microsystems. Tunable metasurfaces offer a powerful dynamic optical platform for controlling the propagation of electromagnetic waves. In this article, we presented a mechanically tunable metasurface (MTM), which can achieve terahertz beam deflection and vary the intensity of the anomalous reflected terahertz wave by changing the air gap between the metallic resonator (MR) array with phase discontinuities and Au ground plane. The absence of lossy spacer materials substantially enhances deflection efficiency. The device was fabricated by a combination of the surface and bulk-micromachining processes. The THz beam steering capability was characterized using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. When the air gap is 50 μm, the maximum deflection coefficient reaches 0.60 at 0.61 THz with a deflection angle of ~44.5°, consistent with theoretical predictions. We further established an electrically tunable miniaturized THz device for dynamic beam steering by introducing a micro voice coil motor to control the air gap continuously. It is shown that our designed MTM demonstrates a high modulation depth of deflection coefficient (~ 62.5%) in the target steered angle at the operating frequency. Our results showcase the potential of the proposed MTM as a platform for high-efficiency THz beam manipulation.

We consider two models of interacting DNA molecules:First is(four parametric)bubble coalescence model in interacting DNAs(shortly:BCI-DNA).Second is(three parametric)bubble coalescence model in a condensed DNA molecules(shortly BCC-DNA).To study bubble coalescence thermodynamics of BCI-DNA and BCC-DNA models we use methods of statistical ***,we define Hamiltonian of each model and give their translation-invariant Gibbs measures(TIGMs).For the first model,we find parameters such that corresponding Hamiltonian has up to three TIGMs(three phases of system)biologically meaning existence of three states:“No bubble coalescence”,“Dominated soft zone”,“Bubble coalescence”.For the second model,we show that for any(admissible)parameters,this model has unique *** is a state where“No bubble coalescence”phasedominates.

Flexible hafnia-based ferroelectric memories are arousing much interest with the ever-growing demands for nonvolatile data storage in wearable electronic ***,high-quality flexible Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2)membranes with robust ferroelectricity were fabricated on inorganic pliable mica substrates via an atomic layer deposition *** flexible Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2) thin membranes with a thickness of∼8 nm exhibit a high remanent polarization of∼16μC/cm^(2),which possess very robust polarization switching endurance(>10^(10) cycles,two orders of magnitude better than reported flexible HfO_(2)-based films)and superior retention ability(expected>10 years).In particular,stable ferroelectric polarization as well as excellent endurance and retention performance show negligible degradations under 6 mm radius bending conditions or after 10^(4) bending cycles with a 6 mm bending *** results mark a crucial step in the development of flexible hafnium oxide-based ferroelectric memories for wearable electronic devices.

Stakeholder Theory, Public Engagement, and Epistemic Injustice: The Case of Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Scotland's African, Caribbean, and Black Communities

The adoption of a stakeholder approach to public engagement within the public sector has been extensive. However, there remain critical gaps in the understanding of stakeholder participation arising from hidden disparities that contribute to unequal access to communication channels, information, and hence ultimately knowledge and decision making. The term "epistemic injustice" has been used to describe such inequality of access and consequently, the outcome that ensues. Epistemic injustice is much overlooked in stakeholder theory. This article shows how epistemic injustice can act as a barrier to effective stakeholder engagement and hence to successful public policy formulation and implementation. We use the case of vaccine hesitancy among Scotland's African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities to illustrate this problem of unequal participation. The study drew on primary data involving 85 participants and secondary data sources from extant literature and explored salient factors shaping barriers to vaccine uptake during the recent pandemic. The findings demonstrate how the failure to grasp epistemic injustice undermines the effectiveness of the stakeholder approach, even with the most well-intentioned efforts. We argue that epistemic injustice is a critical barrier to effective stakeholder approaches.

Flexible wide-range multidimensional force sensors inspired by bones embedded in muscle

Flexible sensors have been widely studied for use in motion monitoring,human‒machine interactions(HMIs),personalized medicine,and soft intelligent ***,their practical application is limited by their low output performance,narrow measuring range,and unidirectional force ***,to achieve flexibility and high performance simultaneously,we developed a flexible wide-range multidimensional force sensor(FWMFS)similar to bones embedded in muscle *** adjustable magnetic field endows the FWMFS with multidimensional perception for detecting forces in different *** multilayer stacked coils significantly improved the output from theμV to the mV level while ensuring FWMFS *** optimized FWMFS exhibited a high voltage sensitivity of 0.227 mV/N(0.5–8.4 N)and 0.047 mV/N(8.4–60 N)in response to normal forces ranging from 0.5 N to 60 N and could detect lateral forces ranging from 0.2–1.1 N and voltage sensitivities of 1.039 mV/N(0.2–0.5 N)and 0.194 mV/N(0.5–1.1 N).In terms of normal force measurements,the FWMFS can monitor finger pressure and sliding trajectories in response to finger taps,as well as measure plantar pressure for assessing human *** plantar pressure signals of five human movements collected by the FWMFS were analyzed using the k-nearest neighbors classification algorithm,which achieved a recognition accuracy of 92%.Additionally,an artificial intelligence biometric authentication system is being developed that classifies and recognizes user *** on the lateral force measurement ability of the FWMFS,the direction of ball movement can be distinguished,and communication systems such as Morse Code can be *** research has significant potential in intelligent sensing and personalized spatial recognition.
