Clinical characteristics and risk factors for mortality in cancer patients with COVID-19

Patients with cancer are at increased risk of severe infections.From a cohort including 3060 patients with confirmed COVID-19,109(3.4%)cancer patients were included in this study.Among them,23(21.1%)patients died in the hospital.Cancer patients,especially those with hematological malignancies(41.6%),urinary carcinoma(35.7%),malignancies of the digestive system(33.3%),gynecological malignancies(20%),and lung cancer(14.3%),had a much higher mortality than patients without cancer.A total of 19(17.4%)cancer patients were infected in the hospital.The clinical characteristics of deceased cancer patients were compared with those of recovered cancer patients.Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that a Nutritional Risk Screening(NRS2002)score≥3(adjusted hazard ratio(HR)11.00;95%confidence interval(CI)4.60–26.32;P<0.001),high-risk type(adjusted HR 18.81;95%CI 4.21–83.93;P<0.001),tumor stage IV(adjusted HR 4.26;95%CI 2.34–7.75;P<0.001),and recent adjuvant therapy(<1 month)(adjusted HR 3.16;95%CI 1.75–5.70;P<0.01)were independent risk factors for in-hospital death after adjusting for age,comorbidities,D-dimer,and lymphocyte count.In conclusion,cancer patients showed a higher risk of COVID-19 infection with a poorer prognosis than patients without cancer.Cancer patients with high-risk tumor,NRS2002 score≥3,advanced tumor stage,and recent adjuvant therapy(<1 month)may have high risk of mortality.

由冯友兰和金岳霖创立的新理学是分析哲学的中国化,在中国分析哲学的发展进程中具有里程碑的意义。新理学一方面批判地继承了宋明儒学的理学,另一方面批判地继承了西方的逻辑经验主义。对于旧理学,它的新颖之处在于明确地引入逻辑分析的方法;对于逻辑经验主义,它的新颖之处在于适当地引入形而上学。冯友兰的形而上学主要包括四个概念,即理、气、道体和大全,金岳霖的形而上学主要包括三个概念,即道、式和能,这两组概念之间具有某种对应关系。在方法论上,新理学主张正方法和负方法的结合,即逻辑分析和静默显示的结合。从新理学的角度看,拒斥形而上学的逻辑经验主义眼界过窄,而借助文学语言的诗化哲学则说得过多,尽管二者都具有一定的合理性。新理学面临关于“存在问题”的困境,出路在于区分语言性质的形而上学和实践性质的形而中学。

Spheroidization of molybdenum powder by radio frequency thermal plasma

To control the morphology and particle size of dense spherical molybdenum powder prepared by radio frequency（RF） plasma from irregular molybdenum powder as a precursor, plasma process parameters were optimized in this paper. The effects of the carrier gas flow rate and molybdenum powder feeding rate on the shape and size of the final products were studied. The molybdenum powder morphology was examined using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. The powder phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The tap density and apparent density of the molybdenum powder were investigated using a Hall flow meter and a Scott volumeter. The optimal process parameters for the spherical molybdenum powder preparation are 50 g/min powder feeding rate and 0.6 m^3/h carrier gas rate. In addition, pure spherical molybdenum powder can be obtained from irregular powder, and the tap density is enhanced after plasma processing. The average size is reduced from 72 to 62 μm, and the tap density is increased from 2.7 to 6.2 g/cm^3. Therefore, RF plasma is a promising method for the preparation of high-density and high-purity spherical powders.

Comparative analysis of robotic vs laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer

BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is the most common gynecological malignancy,ranking first in female reproductive malignancies with more than 500000 new cases and 275000 deaths each year.Traditionally,open radical hysterectomy is considered the standard surgical procedure for the treatment of resectable cervical cancer.The latest guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the European Society of Gynecological Oncology suggest that open surgery and laparoscopic surgery(using traditional laparoscopic or robotic techniques)are the main surgical approaches for radical hysterectomy for patients with stage IA2-IIA cervical cancer.Robotic surgery has been increasingly used in abdominal surgery and has shown more beneficial effects.AIM To analyse the perioperative conditions,complications,and short-term and longterm effects in patients undergoing robotic radical hysterectomy(RRH)and laparoscopic radical hysterectomy(LRH)to compare their clinical efficacy,safety,and feasibility.METHODS The perioperative data of patients undergoing RRH and LRH were extracted and collected from the database of surgical treatments for cervical cancer for statistical analysis.RESULTS Of the patients,342 underwent LRH for cervical cancer,and 216 underwent RRH.The total complication rate was 9.65%(20 patients)in the RRH group and 17.59%(60 patients)in the LRH group.The complication rate was significantly lower in the RRH group than in the LRH group.There was no significant difference in the follow-up period(P=0.658).The total recurrence rates were 15.7%and 12%in the RRH and LRH groups,respectively.The progression-free survival time was 28.91±15.68 mo and 28.34±15.13 mo in the RRH and LRH groups,respectively(P=0.669).The overall survival(OS)rates were 92.13%and 94.45%in the RRH and LRH groups,respectively(P=0.292).The OS time was 29.87±15.92 mo and 29.41±15.14 mo in the RRH and LRH groups,respectively(P=0.732).The survival curves and the progression-free survival curves were not statistically significantly different between the two

Self-assembly of a photoluminescent metal-organic cage and its spontaneous aggregation in dilute solutions enabling timedependent emission enhancement

Charged metal-organic cages generally produce aggregates with various morphologies and different properties through the multiple supramolecular interactions in solution. Herein, a luminescent hexahedral metal-organic cage containing pyrene chromophores is successfully constructed through coordination-driven subcomponent self-assembly. The cage exhibits novel spontaneous aggregation in a dilute solution and time-dependent luminescence enhancement behavior during the subsequent incubation process. Dynamic light scatter(DLS) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) results prove that the metalorganic cages can form blackberry-like aggregates in methanol dilute solution. Unexpectedly, the luminescent intensity of this system shows a linear increase with the extension of the incubation time in methanol, and this process is also reflected in the change in the quantum yield of the system(2% to over 80% after 5 days incubation time). Ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis),1 H nuclear magnetic resonance(1 H NMR) and mass spectra show that metal-organic cages can stably exist in dilute solution. Timedepended DLS and TEM data reveal that the aggregates of metal-organic cages are gradually changed from the dense state to the loose one, which may involve the transition of the system from an energy unstable state to a stable one, probably leading to the unusual time-dependent luminescent property. This unique time-dependent luminescent cage aggregate can be potentially applied as a “supramolecular time meter”.

A correlative classifiers approach based on particle filter and sample set for tracking occluded target

Target tracking is one of the most important issues in computer vision and has been applied in many fields of science, engineering and industry. Because of the occlusion during tracking, typical approaches with single classifier learn much of occluding background information which results in the decrease of tracking performance, and eventually lead to the failure of the tracking algorithm. This paper presents a new correlative classifiers approach to address the above problem. Our idea is to derive a group of correlative classifiers based on sample set method. Then we propose strategy to establish the classifiers and to query the suitable classifiers for the next frame tracking. In order to deal with nonlinear problem, particle filter is adopted and integrated with sample set method. For choosing the target from candidate particles, we define a similarity measurement between particles and sample set. The proposed sample set method includes the following steps. First, we cropped positive samples set around the target and negative samples set far away from the target. Second, we extracted average Haar-like feature from these samples and calculate their statistical characteristic which represents the target model. Third, we define the similarity measurement based on the statistical characteristic of these two sets to judge the similarity between candidate particles and target model. Finally, we choose the largest similarity score particle as the target in the new frame. A number of experiments show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed approach when compared with other state-of-the-art trackers.

Apigenin's anticancer properties and molecular mechanisms of action： Recent advances and future prospectives

Cancer is a major health concern and leading burden on economy worldwide. An increasing effort is devoted to isolation and development of plant-derived dietary components as effective chemo-preventive products. Phytochemical compounds from natural resources such as fruits and vegetables are responsible for decreasing the risk of certain cancers among the consuming populations. Apigenin, a flavonoid phytochemical found in many kinds of fruits and vegetables, has been shown to exert significant biological effects, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and most particularly anti-neoplastic properties. This review is intended to summarize the most recent advances in the anti-proliferative and chemo-preventive effects of apigenin in different cancer models. Analysis of the data from the studied cancer models has revealed that apigenin exerts its anti-proliferative effects through multiple and complex pathways. This guided us to discover some controversial results about the exact role of certain molecular pathways such as autophagy in the anticancer effects of apigenin. Further, there were cumulative positive evidences supporting the involvement of certain pathways such as apoptosis, ROS and DNA damage and repair. Apigenin possesses a high potential to be used as a chemosensitizing agent through the up-regulation of DR5 pathway. According to these preclinical findings we recommend that further robust unbiased studies should consider the possible interactions between different molecular pathways.

Many holo-and hemimetabolous insects enhance their eggshells during embryogenesis by forming a serosal cuticle(SC).To date,scholarly understanding of the SC composition and SC-related gene functions has been limited,especially for hemimetabolous insects.In this study,we initially performed transmission electron microscopic(TEM)observation and chitin staining of the SC in Nilaparvata lugens,a hemimetabolous rice pest known as the brown planthopper(BPH).We confirmed that the SC was a chitin-rich lamellar structure deposited gradually during the early embryogenesis.Parental RNA interference(RNAi)against Nilaparvata lugens chitin synthase 1(NlCHS1)in newly emerged and matured females resulted in decreases of egg hatchability by 100%and 76%,respectively.Ultrastructural analyses revealed loss of the lamellar structure of the SC in dsNlCHS1-treated eggs.According to temporal expression profiles,five cuticle protein coding genes,NlugCpr1/2/3/8/90,were specifically or highly expressed during the SC formation period,and NlugCpr1/2/3/90 were further detected in 72 h eggshells extract by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry.NlugCpr2/3/90 were likely three SC-specific cuticle proteins.TEM observations of the SC following parental RNAi against NlugCpr1/2/3/8/90 demonstrated that NlugCpr3/8/90 were essential for SC formation.The study provided an understanding of the SC formation process and SC-related cuticle proteins in BPHs,which offer potential targets for pest control in the egg stage as well.

Video Polyp Segmentation: A Deep Learning Perspective

We present the first comprehensive video polyp segmentation(VPS)study in the deep learning era.Over the years,developments in VPS are not moving forward with ease due to the lack of a large-scale dataset with fine-grained segmentation annotations.To address this issue,we first introduce a high-quality frame-by-frame annotated VPS dataset,named SUN-SEG,which contains 158690colonoscopy video frames from the well-known SUN-database.We provide additional annotation covering diverse types,i.e.,attribute,object mask,boundary,scribble,and polygon.Second,we design a simple but efficient baseline,named PNS+,which consists of a global encoder,a local encoder,and normalized self-attention(NS)blocks.The global and local encoders receive an anchor frame and multiple successive frames to extract long-term and short-term spatial-temporal representations,which are then progressively refined by two NS blocks.Extensive experiments show that PNS+achieves the best performance and real-time inference speed(170 fps),making it a promising solution for the VPS task.Third,we extensively evaluate 13 representative polyp/object segmentation models on our SUN-SEG dataset and provide attribute-based comparisons.Finally,we discuss several open issues and suggest possible research directions for the VPS community.Our project and dataset are publicly available at https://***/GewelsJI/VPS.

Preoperative serum lipid profile and outcome in nonmetastatic colorectal cancer

Objective: A large portion of non-metastatic colorectal cancers (non-mCRCs) recur after curative surgery. In addition to the traditional tumor-related factors, host-related factors are also required to accurately predict prognosis. A few studies have shown an association between the serum lipid profile and the survival and treatment response of patients with colorectal cancer. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the prognostic significance of the preoperative serum lipid profile [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] in patients with non-mCRC treated with curative surgery. The Spearman rank correlation test was used to analyze associations between lipid levels and categorical variables. Lipid levels were modeled as four equal-sized quartiles based on the distribution among the whole cohort. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate survival probabilities, and the log-rank test was used to detect differences between them. Multivariate fractional polynomial (MFP) analysis was used to model any non-linear effects and avoid categorization. To evaluate the added prognostic value of lipids, the predictive power of two models (with and without lipids as covariates) was compared by using Harrell's C-statistic and the Akaike information criterion (AIC). Results: A total of 266 patients with non-mCRC were enrolled in the present study. Spearman rank correlation test showed that TG levels inversely correlated with N stage ( r =-0.20, P = 0.00) and Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) stage ( r = -0.19, P = 0.00). HDL-C levels positively correlated with perineural invasion (PNI) ( r = 0.15, P = 0.02), and LDL-C levels inversely correlated with lymphovascular invasion (LVI) ( r = -0.12, P = 0.04).
