Material research from the viewpoint of functional motifs

As early as 2001,the need for the ’functional motif theory’ was pointed out,to assist the rational design of functional materials.The properties of materials are determined by their functional motifs and how they are arranged in the materials.Uncovering functional motifs and their arrangements is crucial in understanding the properties of materials and rationally designing new materials of desired properties.The functional motifs of materials are the critical microstructural units(e.***.constituent components and building blocks)that play a decisive role in generating certain material functions,and can not be replaced with other structural units without the loss,or significant suppression,of relevant functions.The role of functional motifs and their arrangement in materials,with representative examples,is presented.The microscopic structures of these examples can be classified into six types on a length scale smaller than ～10 nm with maximum subatomic resolution,i.***.crystal,magnetic,aperio dic,defect,local and electronic structures.Functional motif analysis can be employed in the function-oriented design of materials,as elucidated by taking infrared non-linear optical materials as an example.Machine learning is more efficient in predicting material properties and screening materials with high efficiency than high-throughput experimentation and high-throughput calculations.In order to extract functional motifs and find their quantitative relationships,the development of sufficiently reliable databases for material structures and properties is imperative.

Assessment of Wet Season Precipitation in the Central United States by the Regional Climate Simulation of the WRFG Member in NARCCAP and Its Relationship with Large-Scale Circulation Biases

Assessment of past-climate simulations of regional climate models(RCMs)is important for understanding the reliability of RCMs when used to project future regional climate.Here,we assess the performance and discuss possible causes of biases in a WRF-based RCM with a grid spacing of 50 km,named WRFG,from the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program(NARCCAP)in simulating wet season precipitation over the Central United States for a period when observational data are available.The RCM reproduces key features of the precipitation distribution characteristics during late spring to early summer,although it tends to underestimate the magnitude of precipitation.This dry bias is partially due to the model’s lack of skill in simulating nocturnal precipitation related to the lack of eastward propagating convective systems in the simulation.Inaccuracy in reproducing large-scale circulation and environmental conditions is another contributing factor.The too weak simulated pressure gradient between the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico results in weaker southerly winds in between,leading to a reduction of warm moist air transport from the Gulf to the Central Great Plains.The simulated low-level horizontal convergence fields are less favorable for upward motion than in the NARR and hence,for the development of moist convection as well.Therefore,a careful examination of an RCM’s deficiencies and the identification of the source of errors are important when using the RCM to project precipitation changes in future climate scenarios.

Improving Performance of LDPC-Coded Links via Partial Superposition Retransmission

In this paper,we propose a transmission scheme for uplink and downlink transmissions,where the fifth generation(5G)low-density parity-check(LDPC)codes are implemented for error correction.In the proposed scheme,the acknowledgment(ACK)or negative acknowledgment(NACK)feedback information is transmitted along with the payload data by cyclically shifting coded sequence,while the re-transmitted codewords are superimposed(XORed)partially on the current codewords.The distinguished feature of the proposed transmission scheme is that it requires neither extra transmission bandwidth nor extra transmission power.We also propose to truncate the error patterns for the purpose of reducing the implementation complexity and reducing the error propagation.Numerical results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms conventional LDPC-coded transmission.For the 5G LDPC code with length 1920 at the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of 1.3 dB,the word error rate(WER)of the data transmitted by the proposed scheme is about 10^(−4),while that of the conventional LDPC-coded transmission is about 10^(−2).

Ferroptosis,a type of regulated cell death named one decade ago,is a unique type driven by lipid peroxidation in an iron-dependent manner.Ferroptosis differs radically from apoptosis and other regulated forms of cell death in both morphology and molecular underpinning.Ferroptosis can be triggered by a variety of physiologic conditions and pathologic stresses.There has been growing interest in ferroptosis in recent years,and research on ferroptosis is productive.

Numerical Study on the Pulsation Characteristics of An Attached Air Bubble Under A Nearby Oscillating Bubble

Numerical simulations of the non-spherical evolution of a pulsating bubble interacting with a stationary air bubble attached to a fixed structure were performed using a three-dimensional boundary integral method by implementing the mirror image method to simplify the processing of the numerical model. Code validation was accomplished by comparing the numerical results with the laboratory experimental data obtained in our previous study. Complex phenomena were observed, including three types of bubble jet forms, which depended strongly on the distance parameter with respect to the initial location of the bubble from the plate, the bubble strength parameter and the initial air bubble radius parameters. The results of the simulations provide detail insight into interesting bubble jetting phenomena,such as bubble splitting, jets moving away from the plate, and bubble shedding. The dimensionless distance parameter and the initial air bubble radius parameter play a major role in determining the shapes of two bubbles and the jetting direction. The air bubble strength parameter did not change the bubble jet direction but influenced the bubble shape.The detachment of the attached air bubble under oscillating bubble suction was easily observed for a small initial air bubble. These results showed that bubble jetting toward the plate was manipulated through the effect of attached air bubble, and that cavitation-based applications and underwater explosion bubble may benefit from this erosion mitigation approach.

Five undescribed sesquiterpenoids(1–5),and nine known sesquiterpenoids(6–14)were obtained from the fruits of Litsea lancilimba Merr.by LC-MS/MS molecular networking strategies.Litsemene A(1)possessed a unique 8-member ring through unexpected cyclization of the methyl group on C-10 of guaiane.Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques including IR,UV,NMR,HR-ESI-MS,and their absolute configurations were assigned by ECD calculations.All isolated sesquiterpenoids were analyzed by bioinformatics and evaluated for their neuroprotective effects against H_(2)O_(2)-induced injury in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells.

Diet,serving as a vital source of nutrients,exerts a profound influence on human health and disease progression.Recently,dietary interventions have emerged as promising adjunctive treatment strategies not only for cancer but also for neurodegenerative diseases,autoimmune diseases,cardiovascular diseases,and metabolic disorders.These interventions have demonstrated substantial potential in modulating metabolism,disease trajectory,and therapeutic responses.Metabolic reprogramming is a hallmark of malignant progression,and a deeper understanding of this phenomenon in tumors and its effects on immune regulation is a significant challenge that impedes cancer eradication.Dietary intake,as a key environmental factor,can influence tumor metabolism.Emerging evidence indicates that dietary interventions might affect the nutrient availability in tumors,thereby increasing the efficacy of cancer treatments.However,the intricate interplay between dietary interventions and the pathogenesis of cancer and other diseases is complex.Despite encouraging results,the mechanisms underlying diet-based therapeutic strategies remain largely unexplored,often resulting in underutilization in disease management.In this review,we aim to illuminate the potential effects of various dietary interventions,including calorie restriction,fasting-mimicking diet,ketogenic diet,protein restriction diet,high-salt diet,high-fat diet,and high-fiber diet,on cancer and the aforementioned diseases.We explore the multifaceted impacts of these dietary interventions,encompassing their immunomodulatory effects,other biological impacts,and underlying molecular mechanisms.This review offers valuable insights into the potential application of these dietary interventions as adjunctive therapies in disease management.

As a promising manufacturing technology,three-dimensional(3D)printing technology is widely used in the medical field.In the treatment of osteoarticular defects,the emergence of 3D printing technology provides a new option for the reconstruction of functional articular surfaces.At present,3D printing technology has been used in clinical applications such as models,patient-specific instruments(PSIs),and customized implants to treat joint defects caused by trauma,sports injury,and tumors.This review summarizes the application status of 3D printing technology in the treatment of osteoarticular defects and discusses its advantages,disadvantages,and possible future research strategies.

Breast cancer screening and early diagnosis in Chinese women

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in Chinese women,and its incidence is increasing.Regular screening is an effective method for early tumor detection and improving patient prognosis.In this review,we analyze the epidemiological changes and risk factors associated with breast cancer in China and describe the establishment of a screening strategy suitable for Chinese women.Chinese patients with breast cancer tend to be younger than Western patients and to have denser breasts.Therefore,the age of initial screening in Chinese women should be earlier,and the importance of screening with a combination of ultrasound and mammography is stressed.Moreover,Chinese patients with breast cancers have several ancestry-specific genetic features,and aiding in the determination of genetic screening strategies for identifying high-risk populations.On the basis of current studies,we summarize the development of risk-stratified breast cancer screening guidelines for Chinese women and describe the significant improvement in the prognosis of patients with breast cancer in China.

Quassinoids from the Root Barks of Ailanthus altissima:Isolation,Configurational Assignment,and Cytotoxic Activities

Main observation and conclusion Quassinoids,a class of highly oxygenated triterpenes,have been isolated as bitter principles from the plants of Simaroubaceae family.Five new quassinoids,chouchunlactone A-E(1-5),and two known ones were identified from the root barks of Ailanthus altissima Swingle(Simaroubaceae).The chemical structures of the new compounds were deduced by spectroscopic data analyses,NMR calculations and DP4+probability analysis.The absolute configurations were defined by comparison of their experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism(ECD)spectra data,and compounds 1-2 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.Biologically,compound 5 showed potencies equivalent to sorafenib(IC50 value,9.70μmol·L–1)against HepG2 cells.The Hoechst 33342 staining,JC-1 fluorescent dye and Annexin V/PI analysis studies demonstrated that 5 can induce apoptosis and attenuate mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP)in HepG2 cells.
