Objective: Chronic arsenic exposure causes skin lesions including skin cancers, pigmentary changes, and keratosis. Genetic polymorphism in arsenic metabolism may increase susceptibility to the development of arsenic-related skin lesions. This study was performed to determine whether arsenic metabolism-related gene variants are associated with arsenic-related pigmentary changes.Methods: This case–control study involved 189 patients with arsenic-related pigmentary changes and 103 controls. Thirty-eight polymorphisms in 10 genes determined by mass spectrometry assay served as candidate drivers of arsenic-induced pigmentary changes. Urine and plasma arsenic levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Hair arsenic concentrations were measured by nondispersive atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Arsenic metabolites in urine were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum folate was measured using a folate radio assay kit. Analysis of variance, nonparametric test, or the chi-square test was selected according to the data distribution. Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine the correlation between two parameters. Logistic regression was used to estimate the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms.Results: The arsenic concentrations in urine, plasma, and hair and the urine arsenic species were not significantly different between patients and controls. Logistic regression revealed that among the polymorphisms, the methionine synthase (MTR) rs1805087 polymorphism showed a protective effect against arsenic-related pigmentary changes. In the codominant model, the adjusted odds ratio for age, sex, and ethnicity was 0.41 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.21–0.80;P = 0.008) for the AG genotype and 0.11 (95%CI, 0.02–0.60;P = 0.012) for the GG genotype.Conclusion: MTR polymorphism showed a protective effect against arsenic-related pigmentary changes in the logistic regression model. Inflammatory cytokine storms can trigger disease exacerbation and even death and have reached a consensus in the clinical treatment of acute organ failure.However,the existing strategies remain a great challenge to efficiently suppress inflammatory cytokine storms for promoting organ repair and regeneration.Herein,fully human umbilical cord(UC)-derived adhesive materials(UCAM)that integrate decellularized extracellular matrix(ECM)nanofiber hydrogel and homologous mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are demonstrated to greatly suppress inflammatory cytokine storms,demonstrating high efficacy in treating acute liver failure(ALF)in rats with 90%hepatectomy.The UC-derived adhesive materials have the capacity to secrete a significant quantity of cytokines by MSCs to recruit activated immune cells to migrate into their ECM nanofiber networks,segregating them away from the infection area and thereby greatly suppressing the inflammatory cytokine storms.As expected,the UC-derived adhesive materials can significantly promote hepatocyte proliferation to achieve functional recovery and regeneration of the liver,significantly improving the survival rate in rats.Our fully human UC-derived adhesive materials provide a new avenue in suppressing inflammatory cytokine storms for promoting organ regeneration that would be really utility in clinical organ transplantation-related treatment.

Water pollution caused by global population growth,urban expansion and industrialization development is one of the urgent issues that need to be addressed in the 21st century.Up to now,it was challenging for metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)to be used in the actual water treatment due to that the powder MOFs suffered from difficult reuse,poor water stability and easy corrosion.It is an effective strategy to immobilize MOFs powder onto porous sponge foam carriers for accomplishing large flux,facile recycling,easy processing water treatment setups.In this review article,the fabrication approaches and applications of different MOFs/sponge composites were highlighted,in which the fluorescence detection of pollutants,adsorption and separation of pollutants,catalytic reduction and oxidation of pollutants were included.Finally,the future challenges and opportunities of MOF/sponge for water treatment are proposed,aiming to provide in-depth guidance for the future design and manufacture of the immobilized MOFs onto sponge foams.

Wnt signaling are critical pathway involved in organ development, tumorigenesis, and cancer progression. WNT7A, a member of the Wnt family, remains poorly understood in terms of its role and the underlying molecular mechanisms it entails in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). According to the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), transcriptome sequencing data of HNSCC, the expression level of WNT7A in tumors was found to be higher than in adjacent normal tissues, which was validated using Real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Unexpectedly, overexpression of WNT7A did not activate the canonical Wnt-β-catenin pathway in HNSCC. Instead, our findings suggested that WNT7A potentially activated the FZD7/JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathway, leading to enhanced cell proliferation, self-renewal, and resistance to apoptosis. Furthermore, in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) tumor model, high expression of WNT7A and phosphorylated STAT3 was observed, which positively correlated with tumor progression.These findings underscore the significance of WNT7A in HNSCC progression and propose the targeting of key molecules within the FZD7/JAK1/STAT3 pathway as a promising strategy for precise treatment of HNSCC.

Liquid hydrogen storage and transportation is an effective method for large-scale transportation and utilization of hydrogen energy. Revealing the flow mechanism of cryogenic working fluid is the key to optimize heat exchanger structure and hydrogen liquefaction process(LH2). The methods of cryogenic visualization experiment, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are conducted to study the falling film flow characteristics with the effect of co-current gas flow in LH2spiral wound heat exchanger.The results show that the flow rate of mixed refrigerant has a great influence on liquid film spreading process, falling film flow pattern and heat transfer performance. The liquid film of LH2mixed refrigerant with column flow pattern can not uniformly and completely cover the tube wall surface. As liquid flow rate increases, the falling film flow pattern evolves into sheet-column flow and sheet flow, and liquid film completely covers the surface of tube wall. With the increase of shear effect of gas-phase mixed refrigerant in the same direction, the liquid film gradually becomes unstable, and the flow pattern eventually evolves into a mist flow.

Dry eye disease(DED)is a major ocular pathology worldwide,causing serious ocular discomfort and even visual impairment.The incidence of DED is gradually increasing with the highfrequency use of electronic products.Although inflammation is core cause of the DED vicious cycle,reactive oxygen species(ROS)play a pivotal role in the vicious cycle by regulating inflammation from upstream.Therefore,current therapies merely targeting inflammation show the failure of DED treatment.Here,a novel dual-atom nanozymes(DAN)-based eye drops are developed.The antioxidative DAN is successfully prepared by embedding Fe and Mn bimetallic single-atoms in N-doped carbon material and modifying it with a hydrophilic polymer.The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate the DAN is endowed with superior biological activity in scavenging excessive ROS,inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation,decreasing proinflammatory cytokines expression,and suppressing cell apoptosis.Consequently,the DAN effectively alleviate ocular inflammation,promote corneal epithelial repair,recover goblet cell density and tear secretion,thus breaking the DED vicious cycle.Our findings open an avenue to make the DAN as an intervention form to DED and ROSmediated inflammatory diseases.

Exploring deep learning for landslide mapping:A comprehensive review

A detailed and accurate inventory map of landslides is crucial for quantitative hazard assessment and land planning.Traditional methods relying on change detection and object-oriented approaches have been criticized for their dependence on expert knowledge and subjective factors.Recent advancements in highresolution satellite imagery,coupled with the rapid development of artificial intelligence,particularly datadriven deep learning algorithms(DL)such as convolutional neural networks(CNN),have provided rich feature indicators for landslide mapping,overcoming previous limitations.In this review paper,77representative DL-based landslide detection methods applied in various environments over the past seven years were examined.This study analyzed the structures of different DL networks,discussed five main application scenarios,and assessed both the advancements and limitations of DL in geological hazard analysis.The results indicated that the increasing number of articles per year reflects growing interest in landslide mapping by artificial intelligence,with U-Net-based structures gaining prominence due to their flexibility in feature extraction and generalization.Finally,we explored the hindrances of DL in landslide hazard research based on the above research content.Challenges such as black-box operations and sample dependence persist,warranting further theoretical research and future application of DL in landslide detection.

Commonly afected in early-life population,the impact of allergic phenotypes on mid-or late-life health is less discussed.This study is to explore the association of allergic phenotypes including atopic dermatitis(AD),asthma,eosinophils count(EC),and sarcopenia.We conducted observational studies and mendelian randomization(MR)analysis based on UK Biobank(UKB),the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS)and data from genome-wide association study(GWAS).Based on the UKB data,AD,asthma and EC were positively correlated with pre-sarcopenia and decreased skeletal muscle mass index and hand grip in fully adjusted model.Asthma and EC were signifcantly associated with sarcopenia while AD was marginally associated(p=0.095).Based on the CHARLS cohort,asthma signifcantly added 109.4%risk for pre-sarcopenia in adjusted model(relative risk=2.094;p=0.002),respectively.Both asthma(β=0.100,p=0.006)and EC(β=0.023,p=0.017)exerted signifcantly casual efects on pre-sarcopenia.However,as for sarcopenia,merely EC exhibited a signifcantly casual efect(β=0.005,p=0.048).Signifcant casual efects of AD(β=–0.027,p=0.003),asthma(β=–0.029,p=0.027)and EC(β=–0.041,p<0.001)on decreased appendicular lean mass(ALM)were observed using the inverse-variance weighted method and the Mendelian randomization pleiotropy residual sum and outlier(MR-PRESSO)method.Our results revealed a contributory role of AD,asthma and EC on sarcopenia,especially in terms of decreased ALM,an indicator for sarcopenia diagnosis.The fndings of our study will raise the awareness of preventing aging-related disorders or geriatric syndromes among allergic populations.

This study evaluated the effects of flavonoids from mulberry leaves (FML) on plasma biochemical indices,serum activities of lipid metabolism-related enzymes,fat morphology,fatty acid composition,and lipid metabolism in different adipose tissues of finishing pigs.We used 120 Chinese hybrid barrows of Berkshire and Bama mini-pigs with an average initial body weight of 45.11±4.23 kg.The pigs were randomly assigned to five treatment groups and fed a control diet based on corn,soybean meal,and wheat bran or a control diet supplemented with 0.02%,0.04%,0.08%,or 0.16%FML.Each experimental group had six replicates (pens),with four pigs per pen.After a 7-d adaptation period,the feeding trial was conducted for 58 d.Blood and adipose tissue samples were collected from 30 pigs (one pig per pen)at the end of the test.The results showed that FML supplementation significantly decreased the feed intake to body gain ratio,the plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and free fatty acids,and the serum activity of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (linear or quadratic effects,P<0.05),and decreased the plasma triglyceride concentration (quadratic,P=0.07).Increasing FML supplementation increased the average daily gain and serum activities of lipoprotein lipase (linear and quadratic effects,P<0.05) and adipose triglyceride lipase (linear,P<0.05).Dietary FML supplementation decreased the adipocyte area in the dorsal subcutaneous adipose (DSA) tissue of finishing pigs (linear,P=0.05) and increased the adipocyte area in the visceral adipose tissue (quadratic,P<0.01).Increasing FML supplementation decreased the C20:1 content in DSA,abdominal subcutaneous adipose,and visceral adipose tissues of finishing pigs (P<0.05) and increased the C18:3n3 and n-3 PUFA contents(P<0.05).The lipid metabolism genes were regulated by the PPARγ-LXRa-ABCA1 signaling pathway,and their expressions differed in different adipose tissues.These findings suggest that FML improved growth performance,regulated lipid metabolism,inhibited fat production
