Wide-bandgap semiconductors exhibit much larger energybandgaps than traditional semiconductors such as silicon,rendering them very promising to be applied in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics.Prominent examples of semiconductors include SiC,GaN,ZnO,and diamond,which exhibitdistinctive characteristics such as elevated mobility and thermalconductivity.These characteristics facilitate the operation of awide range of devices,including energy-efficient bipolar junctiontransistors(BJTs)and metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effecttransistors(MOSFETs),as well as high-frequency high-electronmobility transistors(HEMTs)and optoelectronic components suchas light-emitting diodes(LEDs)and lasers.These semiconductorsare used in building integrated circuits(ICs)to facilitate theoperation of power electronics,computer devices,RF systems,andother optoelectronic advancements.These breakthroughs includevarious applications such as imaging,optical communication,andsensing.Among them,the field of power electronics has witnessedtremendous progress in recent years with the development of widebandgap(WBG)semiconductor devices,which is capable ofswitching large currents and voltages rapidly with low losses.However,it has been proven challenging to integrate these deviceswith silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)logic circuits required for complex control functions.The monolithic integration of silicon CMOS with WBG devices increases thecomplexity of fabricating monolithically integrated smart integrated circuits(ICs).This review article proposes implementingCMOS logic directly on the WBG platform as a solution.However,achieving the CMOS functionalities with the adoption of WBGmaterials still remains a significant hurdle.This article summarizesthe research progress in the fabrication of integrated circuitsadopting various WBG materials ranging from SiC to diamond,with the goal of building future smart power ICs.

SHA: QoS-Aware Software and Hardware Auto-Tuning for Database Systems

While databases are widely-used in commercial user-facing services that have stringent quality-of-service(QoS)requirement,it is crucial to ensure their good performance and minimize the hardware usage at the same time.Our investigation shows that the optimal DBMS(database management system)software configuration varies for different user request patterns(i.e.,workloads)and hardware configurations.It is challenging to identify the optimal software and hardware configurations for a database workload,because DBMSs have hundreds of tunable knobs,the effect of tuning a knob depends on other knobs,and the dependency relationship changes under different hardware configurations.In this paper,we propose SHA,a software and hardware auto-tuning system for DBMSs.SHA is comprised of a scaling-based performance predictor,a reinforcement learning(RL)based software tuner,and a QoS-aware resource reallocator.The performance predictor predicts its optimal performance with different hardware configurations and identifies the minimum amount of resources for satisfying its performance requirement.The software tuner fine-tunes the DBMS software knobs to optimize the performance of the workload.The resource reallocator assigns the saved resources to other applications to improve resource utilization without incurring QoS violation of the database workload.Experimental results show that SHA improves the performance of database workloads by 9.9%on average compared with a state-of-the-art solution when the hardware configuration is fixed,and improves 43.2%of resource utilization while ensuring the QoS.

全面抗战爆发前后,丁玲多次随红军上前线,在复杂的战地环境中工作与写作,成为“打杂的人”和“组织家”。她在“一个一个的去认识人”的过程中,聚焦于思想和感情的细微波动处,以大量的“零碎”完成了战地“生活实录”,最终生成了一种可以有效捕捉战地生活经验的“杂写”形态。区别于一般的战地写作,丁玲的这些“杂写”没有进行类别摘录,其中既有大量的人物特写和工作记述,也包含序言、后记、公演说明和杂文等,完整地还原了工作、写作与生活之间的交织过程。丁玲一方面以“零碎”的写法打破了“印象记”式的表达模式,从而得以灵活呈现被战争搅动的革命历史实践经验;另一方面以“杂写”的方式挣脱了“作风”等观念机制的束缚,让写作重新接通了生活与工作。丁玲的战地经历和“杂写”实践由此可以视为一种特殊的生命历练,不仅重组了她的文学结构,也拓展了她对革命和生活的感知程度和范围。

Optical trapping capability of tornado circular Pearcey beams

We systemically investigate optical trapping capability of a kind of tornado waves on Rayleigh particles.Such tornado waves are named as tornado circular Pearcey beams(TCPBs)and produced by combining two circular Pearcey beams with different radii.Our theoretical exploration delves into various aspects,including the propagation dynamics,energy flux,orbital angular momentum,trapping force,and torque characteristics of TCPBs.The results reveal that the orbital angular momentum,trapping force,and torque of these beams can be finely tuned through the judicious manipulation of their topological charges(l_(1)and l_(2)).Notably,we observe a precise control mechanism wherein the force diminishes with|l_(1)+l_(2)|and|l_(1)-l_(2)|,while the torque exhibits enhancement by decreasing solely with|l_(1)+l_(2)|or increasing with|l_(1)-l_(2)|.These results not only provide quantitative insights into the optical trapping performance of TCPBs but also serve as a valuable reference for the ongoing development of innovative photonic tools.

Effect of endometrial thickness on the risk of ectopic pregnancy for frozen embryo transfer

Objective: Few studies have explored the suitability of endometrial thickness (EMT) as a predictor of ectopic pregnancy (EP) in frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. Our study aimed to investigate the association between EMT and EP and explore the cutoff value of EMT to predict EP.Methods: This retrospective cohort study included women aged 20-45 years undergoing FET between March 2015 and September 2021. The primary outcomes and measured variables were EP and EMT, respectively. The threshold effect of EMT on EP was calculated based on a constructed smooth curve fitting. The patients were divided into two groups based on the threshold for comparison. A subgroup analysis was conducted to examine whether the relationship between EMT and EP remained consistent across the different subgroups. Additionally, a generalized linear model was used to analyze the interactions between the treatment factors and EMT in EP.Results: In total, 27,549 FET cycles were included, with 27,086 intrauterine and 463 ectopic pregnancies. The risk of EP in the EMT ≤8.7 mm group was 3.36 times higher than that in the EMT >8.7 mm group (odds ratio [OR]: 3.36, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.57-4.05). Subgroup analysis further indicated that a thin EMT was a risk factor for EP, independent of other risks. We also noted that diminished ovarian reserve, tubal factor infertility, transfer of two embryos, or transfer of cleavage-stage embryos may further enhance the risk of EP in patients with thin endometrium.Conclusions: Thin endometrium was associated with an increased risk of EP. Patients with EMT less than 8.7 mm need close medical observation and management after embryo transfer. In addition, diminished ovarian reserve, tubal factor infertility, transfer of two embryos, or transfer of cleavage-stage embryos may significantly enhance the effect of a thin endometrium on the risk of EP.

Stalk strength increases resistance to stalk lodging,which causes maize(Zea mays L.)production losses worldwide.The genetic mechanisms regulating stalk strength remain unclear.In this study,three stalk strength-related traits(rind penetrometer resistance,stalk crushing strength,and stalk bending strength)and four plant architecture traits(plant height,ear height,stem diameter,stem length)were measured in three field trials.Substantial phenotypic variation was detected for these traits.A genome-wide association study(GWAS)was conducted using general and mixed linear models and 372,331 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs).A total of 94 quantitative trait loci including 241 SNPs were detected.By combining the GWAS data with public gene expression data,56 candidate genes within 50 kb of the significant SNPs were identified,including genes encoding flavonol synthase(GRMZM2G069298,ZmFLS2),nitrate reductase(GRMZM5G878558,ZmNR2),glucose-1-phosphate adenylyltransferase(GRMZM2G027955),and laccase(GRMZM2G447271).Resequencing GRMZM2G069298 and GRMZM5G878558 in all tested lines revealed respectively 47 and 2 variants associated with RPR.Comparison of the RPR of the zmnr2EMS mutant and the wild-type plant under high-and low-nitrogen conditions verified the GRMZM5G878558 function.These findings may be useful for clarifying the genetic basis of stalk strength.The identified candidate genes and variants may be useful for the genetic improvement of maize lodging resistance.

The Impact of the Numbers of Monitoring Stations on the National and Regional Air Quality Assessment in China During 2013-18

China national air quality monitoring network has become the core data source for air quality assessment and management in China.However,during network construction,the significant change in numbers of monitoring sites with time is easily ignored,which brings uncertainty to air quality assessments.This study aims to analyze the impact of change in numbers of stations on national and regional air quality assessments in China during 2013-18.The results indicate that the change in numbers of stations has different impacts on fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5))and ozone concentration assessments.The increasing number of sites makes the estimated national and regional PM_(2.5) concentration slightly lower by 0.6−2.2μg m^(−3) and 1.4−6.0μg m^(−3) respectively from 2013 to 2018.The main reason is that over time,the monitoring network expands from the urban centers to the suburban areas with low population densities and pollutant emissions.For ozone,the increasing number of stations affects the long-term trends of the estimated concentration,especially the national trends,which changed from a slight upward trend to a downward trend in 2014−15.Besides,the impact of the increasing number of sites on ozone assessment exhibits a seasonal difference at the 0.05 significance level in that the added sites make the estimated concentration higher in winter and lower in summer.These results suggest that the change in numbers of monitoring sites is an important uncertainty factor in national and regional air quality assessments,that needs to be considered in long-term concentration assessment,trend analysis,and trend driving force analysis.

Dear Editor,We present the reported case of Posner-Schlossman syndrome(PSS)treated by gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy(GATT).A 28-year-old male presented recurrent PSS in his left eye,leading to uncontrolled intraocular pressure(IOP)and thus glaucomatous optic neuropathy.Two years ago,the patient suddenly experienced swelling with impaired vision in his left eye with no obvious cause,and was diagnosed with the PSS in left eye in another hospital.

The conventional Ensemble Kalman filter(EnKF),which is now widely used to calibrate emission inventories and to improve air quality simulations,is susceptible to simulation errors of meteorological inputs,making accurate updates of high temporal-resolution emission inventories challenging.In this study,we developed a novel meteorologically adjusted inversion method(MAEInv)based on the EnKF to improve daily emission estimations.The new method combines sensitivity analysis and bias correction to alleviate the inversion biases caused by errors of meteorological inputs.For demonstration,we used the MAEInv to inverse daily carbon monoxide(CO)emissions in the Pearl River Delta(PRD)region,China.In the case study,60%of the total CO simulation biases were associated with sensitive meteorological inputs,which would lead to the overestimation of daily variations of posterior emissions.Using the new inversion method,daily variations of emissions shrank dramatically,with the percentage change decreased by 30%.Also,the total amount of posterior CO emissions estimated by the MAEInv decreased by 14%,indicating that posterior CO emissions might be overestimated using the conventional EnKF.Model evaluations using independent observations revealed that daily CO emissions estimated by MAEInv better reproduce the magnitude and temporal patterns of ambient CO concentration,with a higher correlation coefficient(R,+37.0%)and lower normalized mean bias(NMB,-17.9%).Since errors of meteorological inputs are major sources of simulation biases for both low-reactive and reactive pollutants,the MAEInv is also applicable to improve the daily emission inversions of reactive pollutants.
