Promoting lacunar bone regeneration with an injectable hydrogel adaptive to the microenvironment

Injectable hydrogel is suitable for the repair of lacunar bone deficiency.This study fabricated an injectable,self-adaptive silk fibroin/mesoporous bioglass/sodium alginate(SMS)composite hydrogel system.With controllable and adjustable physical and chemical properties,the SMS hydrogel could be easily optimized adaptively to different clinical applications.The SMS hydrogel effectively showed great injectability and shapeability,allowing defect filling with no gap.Moreover,the SMS hydrogel displayed self-adaptability in mechanical reinforcement and degradation,responsive to the concentration of Ca2+and inflammatory-like pH value in the microenvi-ronment of bone deficiency,respectively.In vitro biological studies indicated that SMS hydrogel could promote osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by activation of the MAPK signaling pathway.The SMS hydrogel also could improve migration and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.Investigations of the crosstalk between osteoblasts and macrophages confirmed that SMS hydrogel could regulate macrophage polarization from M1 to M2,which could create a specific favorable environment to induce new bone formation and angiogenesis.Meanwhile,SMS hydrogel was proved to be antibacterial,especially for gram-negative bacteria.Furthermore,in vivo study indicated that SMS could be easily applied for maxillary sinus elevation,inducing sufficient new bone formation.Thus,it is convincing that SMS hydrogel could be potent in a simple,minimally invasive and efficient treatment for the repair of lacunar bone deficiency.

Adhesion-enhancing coating embedded with osteogenesis-promoting PDA/HA nanoparticles for peri-implant soft tissue sealing and osseointegration

Following dental implantation,the characteristic bacterial milieu of the oral cavity may lead to peri-implant inflammation,which can negatively impact osseointegration and cause implant failure.To improve soft tissue sealing around the implant,enhance osseointegration,and improve implant success rates,this paper proposes a composite multifunctional coating(PHG)prepared using gelatin and polydopamine/hydroxyapatite nanoparticles,investigates the effects of this novel coating on cell adhesion,proliferation,antibacterial activity,osteogenic differentiation,and evaluates its immune-related properties.The PHG coating was proved to have satisfactory hydrophilicity and wettability for cell attachment.Furthermore,it improved the expression of adhesion-related genes and proteins in human gingival fibroblasts,indicating its adhesion-promoting effect.Additionally,bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells exhibited strong osteogenic differentiation potential and mineralization on PHG-coated surfaces.Notably,the PHG coating exhibited antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans,as well as anti-inflammatory effects,potentially via the regulation of macrophages.Therefore,the proposed PHG coating may promote soft tissue sealing and bone bonding,providing a potential strategy for the surface modification of dental implants.

Space telescope set to open a new chapter in China's solar research

Distributed collaborative complete coverage path planning based on hybrid strategy

Collaborative coverage path planning(CCPP) refers to obtaining the shortest paths passing over all places except obstacles in a certain area or space. A multi-unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) collaborative CCPP algorithm is proposed for the urban rescue search or military search in outdoor environment.Due to flexible control of small UAVs, it can be considered that all UAVs fly at the same altitude, that is, they perform search tasks on a two-dimensional plane. Based on the agents’ motion characteristics and environmental information, a mathematical model of CCPP problem is established. The minimum time for UAVs to complete the CCPP is the objective function, and complete coverage constraint, no-fly constraint, collision avoidance constraint, and communication constraint are considered. Four motion strategies and two communication strategies are designed. Then a distributed CCPP algorithm is designed based on hybrid strategies. Simulation results compared with patternbased genetic algorithm(PBGA) and random search method show that the proposed method has stronger real-time performance and better scalability and can complete the complete CCPP task more efficiently and stably.

Adolescent suicide risk factors and the integration of socialemotional skills in school-based prevention programs

Adolescents are considered one of the most vulnerable groups affected by suicide.Rapid changes in adolescents’physical and mental states,as well as in their lives,significantly and undeniably increase the risk of suicide.Psychological,social,family,individual,and environmental factors are important risk factors for suicidal behavior among teenagers and may contribute to suicide risk through various direct,indirect,or combined pathways.Social-emotional learning is considered a powerful intervention measure for addressing the crisis of adolescent suicide.When deliberately cultivated,fostered,and enhanced,selfawareness,self-management,social awareness,interpersonal skills,and responsible decision-making,as the five core competencies of social-emotional learning,can be used to effectively target various risk factors for adolescent suicide and provide necessary mental and interpersonal support.Among numerous suicide intervention methods,school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence have shown great potential in preventing and addressing suicide risk factors in adolescents.The characteristics of school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence,including their appropriateness,necessity,cost-effectiveness,comprehensiveness,and effectiveness,make these interventions an important means of addressing the crisis of adolescent suicide.To further determine the potential of school-based interventions based on social-emotional competence and better address the issue of adolescent suicide,additional financial support should be provided,the combination of socialemotional learning and other suicide prevention programs within schools should be fully leveraged,and cooperation between schools and families,society,and other environments should be maximized.These efforts should be considered future research directions.

Unlocking the power of physical activity in easing psychological distress

The severity of the current global mental health situation and the importance of maintaining psychological well-being call for more powerful,convenient,and efficient solutions for addressing psychological issues and relieving mental stress.Physical activity not only effectively improves physical fitness and reduces negative emotions such as anxiety and depression but also increases the improvement of psychological health and sense of well-being.At the same time,physical activity interventions for mental health have unique advantages,including reducing the side effects of psychological interventions and increasing necessity,convenience,and cost-effectiveness,as well as flexible adaptability across multiple methods,groups,and age ranges,providing stronger support for relieving psychological stress and addressing psychological issues.Although physical activity is an important intervention measure in relieving psychological stress,its value and role in mental health care seem to have not yet received sufficient attention,and its potential remains to be further revealed.Given the significant advantages and effectiveness of physical activity in mental health intervention practices,it is necessary to stimulate its potential in relieving psychological stress through various means in future studies to better safeguard the public’s physical and mental health.Developing guidelines for physical activity for improved mental health,enhancing organic integration with other intervention measures,and providing necessary respect,encouragement,and support are important directions to consider.

Dysfunction of synaptic endocytic trafficking in Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is characterized by the selective degeneration of dopamine neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway and dopamine deficiency in the striatum.The precise reasons behind the specific degeneration of these dopamine neurons remain largely elusive.Genetic investigations have identified over 20 causative PARK genes and 90 genomic risk loci associated with both familial and sporadic Parkinson's disease.Notably,several of these genes are linked to the synaptic vesicle recycling process,particularly the clathrinmediated endocytosis pathway.This suggests that impaired synaptic vesicle recycling might represent an early feature of Parkinson's disease,followed by axonal degeneration and the eventual loss of dopamine cell bodies in the midbrain via a"dying back"mechanism.Recently,several new animal and cellular models with Parkinson's disease-linked mutations affecting the endocytic pathway have been created and extensively characterized.These models faithfully recapitulate certain Parkinson's disease-like features at the animal,circuit,and cellular levels,and exhibit defects in synaptic membrane trafficking,further supporting the findings from human genetics and clinical studies.In this review,we will first summarize the cellular and molecular findings from the models of two Parkinson's disease-linked clathrin uncoating proteins:auxilin(DNAJC6/PARK19)and synaptojanin 1(SYNJ1/PARK20).The mouse models carrying these two PARK gene mutations phenocopy each other with specific dopamine terminal pathology and display a potent synergistic effect.Subsequently,we will delve into the involvement of several clathrin-mediated endocytosis-related proteins(GAK,endophilin A1,SAC2/INPP5 F,synaptotagmin-11),identified as Parkinson's disease risk factors through genome-wide association studies,in Parkinson's disease pathogenesis.We will also explore the direct or indirect roles of some common Parkinson's disease-linked proteins(alpha-synuclein(PARK1/4),Parkin(PARK2),and LRRK2(PARK8))in synaptic endocytic trafficking.Additionall

Simulation and evaluation study of atmospheric aerosol nonsphericity as a function of particle size

Aerosol nonsphericity causes great uncertainty in radiative forcing assessments and climate simulations.Although considerable studies have attempted to quantify this uncertainty,the relationship between aerosol nonsphericity and particle size is usually not considered,thus reducing the accuracy of the results.In this study,a coupled inversion algorithm combining an improved stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithm and angular light scattering is used for the nonparametric estimation of aerosol nonsphericity variation with particle size,and the optimal sample selection method is employed to screen the data.Based on the verification of inversion accuracy,the variation of aerosol aspect ratio with particle size based on the ellipsoidal model in global regions has been obtained from Aerosol Robotic Network(AERONET)data,and the effect of nonsphericity on radiative forcing and dry deposition has been studied.The results show that the aspect ratio increases with particle size in all regions,with the maximum ranging from 1.4 to 1.8 in the desert,reflecting the differences in aerosol composition at different particle sizes.In radiation calculations,considering aerosol nonsphericity makes the aerosol cooling effect weaker and surface radiative fluxes increase,but hardly changes the aerosol absorption,with maximum differences of 9.22%and 22.12%at the bottom and top of the atmosphere,respectively.Meanwhile,the differences in radiative forcing between aspect ratios as a function of particle size and not varying with particle size are not significant,averaging less than 2%.Besides,the aspect ratio not varying with particle size underestimates the deposition velocity of small particles and overestimates that of large particles compared to that as a function of particle size,with maximum differences of 7%and 4%,respectively.

Evaluation of water management on arsenic methylation and volatilization in arsenic-contaminated soils strengthened by bioaugmentation and biostimulation

Arsenic(As) fate in paddy fields has been one of the most significant current issues due to the strong As accumulation potential of rice plants under fooded conditions. However,no attempt was done to explore As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions. Herein, we investigated the effects of water management on As methylation and volatilization in three arsenic-contaminated soils enhanced by biostimulation with strawderived organic matter and bioaugmentation with genetic engineered Pseudomonas putida KT2440(GE P. putida). Under fooded conditions, the application of biochar(BC), rice straw(RS)and their combination(BC+RS) increased total As in porewater. However, these effects were greatly attenuated under non-fooded conditions. Compared with RS amendment alone, the combination of GE P. putida and RS further promoted the As methylation and volatilization,and the promotion percentage under non-fooded conditions were significantly higher than that under fooded conditions. The combined GE P. putida and RS showed the highest efficiency in As methylation(88 μg/L) and volatilization(415.4 μg/(kg·year)) in the non-fooded soil with moderate As contamination. Finally, stepwise multiple linear regression analysis presented that methylated As, DOC and p H in porewater were the most important factors contributing to As volatilization. Overall, our findings suggest that combination of bioaugmentation with GE P. putida and biostimulation with RS/BC+RS is a potential strategy for bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils by enhancing As methylation and volatilization under non-fooded conditions.

Controllable nucleation and deformation of skyrmions on surface of magnetic nanotubular monolayer

Magnetic skyrmions emerge when the energy of ferromagnetic exchange interaction promoting parallel alignment of spins enters in competition with energies favoring non-collinear alignment of spins such as Dzy aloshinskii-Moriya interaction(DMI),long-rang dipole-dipole interaction(DDI),or higher-order exchange interactions.We perform an unbiased Monte Carlo simulation to study the DMI-based skyrmion nucleation and stabilization on the surface of magnetic nanotubular monolayer controlled by tuning constants of DDI(g) and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interaction(j') with appropriate balance.Without g and j',the loosely distributed skyrmions initially nucleate on the surface of nanotube approaching to the magnetic field(h) direction with increasing h in the intermediate range.Then,the skyrmion size,shape,density,distribution and crystal structure,as well as its driven field range,are tailored by g and j'.This work demonstrates the skyrmion nucleation mechanisms in three-dimensional magnetic nanostructures with curvature effect and multiple interactions,serving as a benchmark for a guide to experimentalists for preparation of samples in magnetic skyrmion states.
