Complex genesis of multiperiod fractures in the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation in the Pengzhou gas field, western Sichuan Basin, China

The cumulative expression of multistage deformation is complex multiperiod fractures,which are commonly seen in tectonic zones.The Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation in the western Sichuan Basin Depression,China,is a typical marine carbonate reservoir with natural fractures caused mainly by tectonic movements.According to outcrops,drill cores,image logging,and fluid inclusions,the fracture characteristics,types of natural fractures,and interactions of fractures are determined.In total,419 natural fractures in 493.2 m of cores from 7 wells are investigated,which are mainly shear and tensile fractures with a small number of weathering generated fractures.Meanwhile,the results of the stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ18O,as well as the flow fluid inclusion data,reveal four tectonic periods of fractures with different occurrences.Based on the history of regional tectonic evolution,indicating one period of weathering fractures ascribable to stratal uplift and three periods of structural fractures related to the sequential tectonic movements of the Longmenshan fault belt.By analyzing the interaction relationships of fractures,three types of fracture interaction relationships are observed:cutting,restraining,and overlapping.The four stages fractures are chronologically assigned to(1)the early Indosinian N-S trending compression,(2)the late Indosinian NW-SE compression,(3)the middle Yanshanian NE-SE compression,and(4)the early Himalayan E-W compression.The influence of natural fractures on gas migration and well production in marine carbonates is discussed,and indicates that tectonic fractures could provide seepage channels for gas migration and accumulation from near or distant hydrocarbon source rocks into the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation.This study utilizes a pragmatic approach for understanding the fracture genesis mechanism in oil and gas field with multiperiod fractures.

Morphometric study of the testis and reproductive tract （including sperm granuloma） after vasectomy in mature rats

By utilizing the rabbit model, previous studies have found good evidence indicating that vasectomy-induced spermatogenic damage is pressure-mediated： the damage occurs when the occluded reproductive tract is unable to accommodate additional spermatozoa produced by the testis. More studies with the more commonly used rat model have shown, however, controversial results on whether and why the damage occurs. In this study, 12 mature male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to unilateral vasectomy： double ligation （without severing） of the vas deferens exposed via a small inguinal incision; 37 days after the operation, the testes, epididymides, vasa deferentia （juxta-epididymal segments）, and sperm granulomas （at the vasectomy site） were removed to obtain methacrylate resin-embedded sections and morphometric studies carried out with light microscopy. Marked spermatogenic damage with spermatids and spermatocytes depleted in the seminiferous epithelium in 43% of the seminiferous tubule profiles was demonstrated in 5 of the 12 testes on the vasectomized side, and the damage was associated with smaller or absent sperm granulomas; in the other 7 testes with essentially normal spermatogenesis, there was an increase （by 111% on average） in the volume of the tubule lumen, associated with larger granulomas or granulomas containing more spermatozoa. There was an overall increase （by 66%） in the thickness of the rete testis in the 12 testes; the epididymis or vas deferens showed no distension. It seems therefore that the spermatogenic damage induced by vasectomy in rats is pressure-mediated as well, and that variation in the damage depends mainly on the postoperative development of the sperm granuloma.

Owing to its excellent high-temperature resistance and high conductivity,zirconium diboride(ZrB_(2)) has been applied as an infrared suppression coating.However,ZrB_(2)is susceptible to hydrolysis under high-moisture conditions and even under mild working temperatures.The improvement in the hydrophobicity of the ZrB_(2)surface effectively reduces wetting by water and suppresses hydrolysis reaction,particularly under high-temperature and high-moisture conditions.Herein,we report a novel,easy,and highly reproducible method for producing a fully coated ZrB_(2)surface by developing a nanoscale hydrophobic layer of glassy LaF_(3)on the surface of ZrB_(2)powder particles in situ(i.e.,during the carbothermal synthesis of ZrB_(2)).Through the tests carried out at 200 ℃for 100-300 h in a hydrothermal reactor,the produced powders displayed remarkably high long-term hydrolysis resistance and pronounced chemical stability.Compared with treated ZrB_(2),ZrB_(2)@LaF_(3)remained lower infrared emissivity when continuously intensifying hydrolyzation process.The results suggest that a nanoscale surface modification strategy can be applied to stabilize the infrared emissivity of ZrB_(2)in a water-oxygen coupling environment.

Emergence of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza in Democratic People's Republic of Korea

In the past decade,there has been extensive global surveillance for highly pathogenic avian influenza(HPAI)infection in both animals and humans,however,few studies on epidemiology of avian influenza in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK)were published.During the period 2013–2014,HPAI H5N1 viruses were detected with outbreaks in domestic poultry in DPRK.Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the hemagglutinin gene of all samples belonged to clade 2.***.2.1c with high homology.The HPAI H5N1 virus found in ducks at the Tudan Duck Farm in 2013 was might introduced by migratory birds and then led to the outbreaks on neighboring chicken farms in 2014.These data provide direct evidence for the transmission of avian influenza viruses from wild birds to waterfowl to terrestrial birds.Therefore,the monitoring and control of influenza virus in ducks must be given top priority,which are essential components to prevent and control HPAI.

Mineral Intake in Urban Pregnant Women from Base Diet,Fortified Foods,and Food Supplements:Focus on Calcium,Iron,and Zinc

In the Chinese national nutrition surveys, fortified foods were not investigated separately from the base diet, and the contribution of fortified foods to micronutrients intake is not very clear. This study investigated the diet, including fortified foods and food supplements, of urban pregnant women and analyzed the intake of calcium, iron,and zinc to assess the corresponding contributions of fortified foods, food supplements, and the base diet. The results demonstrated that the base diet was the major source of calcium, iron, and zinc, and was recommended to be the first choice for micronutrients intake. Furthermore, consumption of fortified foods and food supplements offered effective approaches to improve the dietary intake of calcium, iron, and zinc in Chinese urban pregnant women.

In-situ fabricated perovskite nanocrystals in polymeric matrix provide new generation composite materials for plenty of cutting edge technology. In this work, we report the in-situ fabrication of copper halide perovskite(MA_2CuCl_4, MA:CH_3NH_3^+) embedded poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) composite films. The optimized MA_2CuCl_4/PVDF composite films exhibit greatly enhanced piezo-response in comparasion with pure PVDF films. The enhancements were invesitgated and explained by applying piezo-response force microscopy(PFM) measurements and density functional theory(DFT) caculations. We proposed that the high piezoelectric properties of MA_2CuCl_4/PVDF composite films could be related to the large Cu off-centering displacement, the strong interactions between MA_2CuCl_4 and PVDF as well as large stress concentration around the MA_2CuCl_4 particles in the films. These piezoelectric composite films are expected to be suitable functional materials for flexible and/or wearable piezoelectrics.

Dear Editor Cardiovascular disease(CVD)is the leading cause of death around the world(Truelsen,et al.,2015).Atherosclerosis,the dominant underlying cause of CVD,is a chronic inflam-matory disease characterized by lipid accumulation and immune cell infiltration in plaques and vessels(Weber,et al.,1950).The immune microenvironment is critical for the development of atherosclerosis.Homocysteine(Hcy)is an intermediate product of methionine metabolism,and its ele-vation in plasma(>15μmol/L),known as hyperhomocys-teinemia(HHcy),is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis.HHcy is more common in Asia because of genetic factors and dietary habits(Huo,et al.,2015).folic acid supplement is one of the most important way to treat HHcy in clinic.Although HHcy potentiates atherosclerosis mainly through endothelial injury and inflammatory activa-tion(Luo,et al.,2016),a comprehensive understanding of the immune microenvironment and potential mechanisms in HHcy-accelerated atherosclerotic aortas(HHcy-AA)is still lacking.

Tissue distribution of deoxynivalenol in piglets following intravenous administration

Contamination of deoxynivalenol（DON） in grains is common worldwide and pigs are particularly susceptible to this mycotoxin. The distribution of DON in porcine tissues following intravenous administration was investigated in this study. Fifteen pigs were randomly divided into three groups. Animals in groups A and B were administrated with DON at the dose of 250 and 750 μg kg–1 body weight, respectively, while group C served as blank control. Plasma, bile and 27 tissues were collected at 30 min post-administration. DON concentrations in all samples were tested using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry（HPLC-MS/MS）. To observe the distribution of DON in tissues, these samples were further subjected to the immunohistochemical analyses. Totally, the bile and 13 tissues were sampled for DON-based detection, including kidney, mesenteric lymph nodes, muscle, stomach, jejunum, colon, plasma, spleen, rectum, cecum, liver, ileum, and duodenum. No significant difference was observed for the concentrations of DON in duodenum, ileum and liver samples between groups A and B; while the DON concentrations in cecum and rectum of group B were significantly higher（P-value 〈0.05） than those in group A. In addition, the DON concentrations in stomach, jejunum, colon, mesenteric lymph nodes, muscle, kidney, spleen, bile, and plasma of group B were remarkably higher than those of group A（P-value〈0.01）. Levels of DON in other 14 tissues including medulla oblongata, midbrain, diencephalon, pons, tip and tongue body, tongue, soft palate, tonsils, pharyngeal mucosa, oral buccal mucosa, thymus, thyroid, esophagus and adrenal gland were all below the limit of detection. The results of immunohistochemistry showed that 11 tissue samples（medullaoblongata, tonsil, adrenal medulla, thyroid gland, thyroid, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, kidney, spleen, and mesenteric lymph nodes） were positive and DON was mainly distributed around blood vessels in these tissues. The rising global prevalence of metabolic diseases has increased the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),leading to an increase in cases of NAFLD-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).To provide an updated literature review detailing epidemiology,risk factors,pathogenic pathways,and treatment strategies linked to NAFLD-related HCC,we conducted a literature search on PubMed from its inception to December 31,2021.About 25%of the global population suffers from NAFLD.The annual incidence of HCC among NAFLD patients is approximately 1.8 per 1,000 person-years.Older age,male sex,metabolic comorbidities,unhealthy lifestyle habits(such as smoking and alcohol consumption),physical inactivity,genetic susceptibility,liver fibrosis,and degree of cirrhosis in NAFLD patients are important risk factors for NAFLD-related HCC.Therefore,low-calorie diet,moderate-intensity exercise,treatment of metabolic comorbidities,and cessation of smoking and alcohol are the main measures to prevent NAFLD-related HCC.In addition,all patients with advanced NAFLD-related fibrosis or cirrhosis should be screened for HCC.Immune suppression disorders and changes in the liver microenvironment may be the main pathogenesis of NAFLD-related HCC.Hepatic resection,liver transplantation,ablation,transarterial chemoembolization,radiotherapy,targeted drugs,and immune checkpoint inhibitors are used to treat NAFLD-related HCC.Lenvatinib treatment may lead to better overall survival,while immune checkpoint inhibitors may lead to worse overall survival.Given the specific risk factors for NAFLD-related HCC,primary prevention is key.Moreover,the same treatment may differ substantially in efficacy against NAFLD-related HCC than against HCC of other etiologies.
