Attribution analysis and multi-scenario prediction of NDVI drivers in the Xilin Gol grassland,China

Grassland degradation is influenced by climate change and human activities,and has become a major obstacle for the development of arid and semi-arid areas,posing a series of environmental and socio-economic problems.An in-depth understanding of the inner relations among grassland vegetation dynamics,climate change,and human activities is therefore greatly significant for understanding the variation in regional environmental conditions and predicting future developmental trends.Based on MODIS(moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer)NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index)data from 2000 to 2020,our objective is to investigate the spatiotemporal changes of NDVI in the Xilin Gol grassland,Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region,China.Combined with 12 natural factors and human activity factors in the same period,the dominant driving factors and their interactions were identified by using the geographic detector model,and multiple scenarios were also simulated to forecast the possible paths of future NDVI changes in this area.The results showed that:(1)in the past 21 a,vegetation cover in the Xilin Gol grassland exhibited an overall increasing trend,and the vegetation restoration(84.53%)area surpassed vegetation degradation area(7.43%);(2)precipitation,wind velocity,and livestock number were the dominant factors affecting NDVI(the explanatory power of these factors exceeded 0.4).The interaction between average annual wind velocity and average annual precipitation,and between average annual precipitation and livestock number greatly affected NDVI changes(the explanatory power of these factors exceeded 0.7).Moreover,the impact of climate change on NDVI was more significant than human activities;and(3)scenario analysis indicated that NDVI in the Xinlin Gol grassland increased under the scenarios of reduced wind velocity,increased precipitation,and ecological protection.In contrast,vegetation coverage restoration in this area was significantly reduced under the scenarios of unfavorable climate conditions and excessive h

Neuropathic pain is a major health problem affecting up to 10%of the general population,resulting from a lesion or dysfunction of the somatosensory nervous system,including peripheral nerve injury(PNI)^([1]).However,neuropathic pain is difficult to treat because of its obscure mechanisms.Diverse types of neuropathic pain have been modelled in rodents to study its underlying mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic targets.

A dynamic photoresponse model for a pinned photodiode in CMOS image sensors

A novel dynamic photoresponse model for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS)image sensors with pinned photodiode(PPD)structures is proposed.The PPD is regarded as the bonding structure of the two p-n junctions.The transient current equation of the two junctions is calculated by the current-voltage formula of the p-n junction,and the photoresponse curve of the PPD is calculated and drawn by the numerical solution.Simulation results show that the dynamic model successfully restores the entire process of the electron accumulation in the PPD.The difference between the full well capacity(FWC)values which were calculated by the proposed model and the simulation results is less than 5%,which is much smaller than the error of 40%for the traditional model.

Local-to-Global Causal Reasoning for Cross-Document Relation Extraction

Cross-document relation extraction(RE),as an extension of information extraction,requires integrating information from multiple documents retrieved from open domains with a large number of irrelevant or confusing noisy texts.Previous studies focus on the attention mechanism to construct the connection between different text features through semantic similarity.However,similarity-based methods cannot distinguish valid information from highly similar retrieved documents well.How to design an effective algorithm to implement aggregated reasoning in confusing information with similar features still remains an open issue.To address this problem,we design a novel local-toglobal causal reasoning(LGCR)network for cross-document RE,which enables efficient distinguishing,filtering and global reasoning on complex information from a causal perspective.Specifically,we propose a local causal estimation algorithm to estimate the causal effect,which is the first trial to use the causal reasoning independent of feature similarity to distinguish between confusing and valid information in cross-document RE.Furthermore,based on the causal effect,we propose a causality guided global reasoning algorithm to filter the confusing information and achieve global reasoning.Experimental results under the closed and the open settings of the large-scale dataset Cod RED demonstrate our LGCR network significantly outperforms the state-ofthe-art methods and validate the effectiveness of causal reasoning in confusing information processing.

Epigenetics focuses on DNA methylation,histone modification,chromatin remodeling,noncoding RNAs,and other gene regulation mechanisms beyond the DNA sequence.In the past decade,epigenetic modifications have drawn more attention as they participate in the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy despite tight control of glucose levels.The underlying mechanisms of epigenetic modifications in diabetic retinopathy still urgently need to be elucidated.The diabetic condition facilitates epigenetic changes and influences target gene expression.In this review,we summarize the involvement of epigenetic modifications and metabolic memory in the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy and propose novel insights into the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.

An Easily Implementable Algorithm for Efficient Projection onto the Ordered Weighted l_(1)Norm Ball

This paper concerns with efficient projection onto the ordered weighted l_(1)norm ball,which is equivalent to the problem of finding projector onto the intersection of the monotone nonnegative cone and an affine subspace.Based on Lagrangian relaxation and secant approximation method,we propose an easily implementable yet efficient algorithm to solve the projection problem which is proved to terminate after a finite number of iterations.Furthermore,we design efficient implementations for our algorithm and compare it with a semismooth Newton(SSN)algorithm and a root-finding(Root-F)algorithm.Numerical results on a diversity of test problems show that our algorithm is superior than SSN and Root-F.

Joint Beamforming for Delay Optimal Transmission in Cache-Enabled Wireless Backhaul Networks

This paper considers the problem of joint beamformer design for a two-tier wireless network,whereby a set of cache-enabled access points(APs)are connected to the base station(BS)via wireless backhaul links.The APs can prefetch and store the files requested by users,to serve users directly in the access links.Thus low-latency transmissions are enabled as the transmission in the backhaul links is saved.However,due to the limited cache capacity,not all requested files can be stored in the APs,some of the non-cached APs then should be utilized as long as their transmission delays in the access and backhaul links can be well addressed.Two delay optimal beamformer design(DOBD)problems are formulated to minimize the overall delay incurred in the backhaul and access link transmissions via a joint optimization of the beamformer at the BS and APs.We consider the DOBD problem under non-fragment and fragment caching policies,both involving nonconvex link rate constraints.The semi-definite relaxation(SDR)and sequential convex approximation(SCA)schemes are adopted to approximate the nonconvex problems into convex ones,which are then iteratively solved.Numerical results demonstrate the convergence and improved transmission delay performance of the proposed scheme under various network settings.

Wind direction forecasting plays an important role in wind power prediction and air pollution management. Weather quantities such as temperature, precipitation, and wind speed are linear variables in which traditional model output statistics and bias correction methods are applied. However, wind direction is an angular variable; therefore, such traditional methods are ineffective for its evaluation. This paper proposes an effective bias correction technique for wind direction forecasting of turbine height from numerical weather prediction models, which is based on a circular-circular regression approach. The technique is applied to a 24-h forecast of 65-m wind directions observed at Yangmeishan wind farm, Yunnan Province, China, which consistently yields improvements in forecast performance parameters such as smaller absolute mean error and stronger similarity in wind rose diagram pattern.

Quantum entanglement plays a key role in both understanding the fundamental aspects of quantum physics and realizing various quantum devices for practical applications. Here we propose how to achieve a coherent switch of optomechanical entanglement in an optical whispering-gallery-mode resonator, by tuning the phase difference of the driving lasers. We find that the optomechanical entanglement and the associated two-mode quantum squeezing can be well tuned in a highly asymmetric way,providing an efficient way to protect and enhance quantum entanglement against optical backscattering, in comparison with conventional symmetric devices. Our findings shed a new light on improving the performance of various quantum devices in the practical noisy environment, which is crucial in such a wide range of applications as noise-tolerant quantum processing and the backscattering-immune quantum metrology.

Tell health stories comprehensively and accurately: A case study of health edition of People's Daily

Objectives:People increasingly search for health information through the media and make decisions about their health based on these health stories.The mainstream media,including newspapers,are often the first source for the public to obtain health information.This study aims to assess the health stories reported in the health edition of People's Daily in 2019 with four tools of the Media Doctor Toolkit(MDT),which can be an effective tool to evaluate the quality of public health stories.Based on the results,we attempt to address the gap in media coverage in terms of reporting on public health issues,and promote media to display the image of medical staff objectively,both of which can improve relationship of doctors,nurses and patients.Methods:A prospective quantitative analysis of the quality of health stories reported in the health edition of People's Daily from 1 February to September 31,2019 was conducted.Forty-eight articles were collected and divided into four groups according to the MDT standards.Four rating tools were adapted from the MDT to assess the quality of the groups with corresponding criteria.Results:Forty-eight unique health stories were assessed with four MDT rating tools.The mean total satisfactory score was 80%.Health advice had the highest average satisfactory score,84%,compared with health policy group and public health problems and their solutions,at 80%and 77%,respectively.Health news group had the lowest score at 73%.Conclusion:This study provides a description of the quality of health stories on People's Daily.The overall quality of People's Daily was fairly good,although there was a wide range of quality between groups.The health edition of People's Daily covers a wide range of health topics such as new medical methods,doctorpatient relationship,advanced nursing practice,lifestyle change of health promotion etc.which promote excellence in providing the latest health information,representing medical staff image,resolve the disharmonious factors in the relationship between doctors and pati
