To improve the current understanding of the reduction of tsunami-like solitary wave runup by the pile breakwater on a sloping beach, we developed a 3D numerical wave tank based on the CFD tool OpenFOAM in this study. The Navier Stokes equations were applied to solve the two-phase incompressible flow, combined with an LES model to solve the turbulence and a VOF method to capture the free surface. The adopted model was firstly validated with existing empirical formulas for solitary wave runup on the slope without the pile structure. It is then validated using our new laboratory observations of the free surface elevation, the velocity and the pressure around a row of vertical slotted piles subjected to solitary waves, as well as the wave runup on the slope behind the piles. Subsequently, a set of numerical simulations were implemented to analyze the wave reflection, the wave transmission, and the shoreline runup with various offshore wave heights, offshore water depths, adjacent pile spaces and beach slopes. Finally, an improved empirical equation accounting for the maximum wave runup on the slope was proposed by taking the presence of the pile breakwater into consideration.

FLOW PAST TWO ROTATING CIRCULAR CYLINDERS IN A SIDE-BY-SIDE ARRANGEMENT

Measurements were performed using Particle Image Velocimetry （PIV） to analyze the modification of flow by the combined effects of the rotation and the Reynolds number on the flow past two rotating circular cylinders in a side-by-side-arrangement at a range of 425 〈 Re ≤ 1130,0 ≤α ≤4 （ α is the rotational speed） at one gap spacing of T / d = 1.11 （T and d are the distance between the centers of two cylinders and the cylinder diameter, respectively）. A new Immersed-Lattice Boltzmann Method （ILBM） scheme was used to study the effect of the gap spacing on the flow. The results show that the vortex shedding is suppressed as rotational speed increases. The flow reaches a steady state when the vortex shedding for both cylinders is completely suppressed at critical rotational speed. As the rotational speed further increases, the separation phenomenon in the boundary layers disappears at the attachment rotational speed. The critical rotational speed and attachment rotational speed become small as Reynolds number increases. The absolute rotational speed of cylinders should be large at same critical rotational speed and attachment rotational speed in the case of large Reynolds number. The gap spacing has an important role in changing the pattern of vortex shedding. It is very different in the mechanism of vortex shedding suppression for the flows around two rotating cylinders and single rotating cylinder.

In Locusta migratoria, we found that two chitin biosynthesis genes, UDP N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase gene LmUAP1 and chitin synthase gene Lm- CHS1, are expressed mainly in the integument and are responsible for cuticle formation. However, whether these genes are regulated by 20-hydroxyecdysone （20E） is still largely unclear. Here, we showed the developmental expression pattern ofLmUAP1, LmCHS1 and the corresponding 20E titer during the last instar nymph stage of locust. RNA interference （RNAi） directed toward a common region of the two isoforms of LmEcR （LmEcRcom） reduced the expression level of LmUAP1, while there was no difference in the expression of LmCHS1. Meantime, injection of 20E in vivo induced the expression of LmUAP1 but not LmCHS1. Further, we found injection-based RNAi of LmEcRcom resulted in 100% mortality. The locusts failed to molt with no apolysis, and maintained in the nymph stage until death. In conclusion, our preliminary results indicated that LmUAP1 in the chitin biosynthesis pathway is a 20E late-response gene and LmEcR plays an essential role in locust growth and development, which could be a good potential target for RNAi-based pest control.

This paper focuses on deriving the stability condi- tions of interval type-2 fuzzy-model-based （FMB） control system formed by the interval type-2 T-S fuzzy model and the interval type-2 T-S fuzzy controller connected in a closed loop. To reduce the conservativeness of stability analysis, a fuzzy Lyapunov function, considering the property of membership functions, is adopted. The stability conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities （LMIs） are obtained. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed conditions.

ZG0Cr26Ni5Mo3Cu3 Duplex Stainless Steel （DSS） was solution treated at 1,060 ℃ for 3 h,followed by water cooling. Tempering treatments were conducted at 720, 750 and 780 ℃, respectively, for 16 h,followed by air cooling. The microstructures of ZG0Cr26Ni5Mo3Cu3 duplex stainless steel samples treated at different tempering temperatures were observed by scanning electron microscope （SEM） and energy dispersal spectroscopy （EDS）, and the phase consitutions were analyzed using X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The effects of the precipitation of sigma （σ） phase on the duplex phase percentage, hardness, impact toughness and corrosion resistance of the DSS were studied. Results showed that microstructures of ZG0Cr26Ni5Mo3Cu3 after solution treatment consists of ferrite （α） phase and austenite （γ） phase; after being tempered at different temperatures,σ phase appeared due to a eutectoid-type reaction of α→σ＋γ2 during tempering treatment. It was observed that σ phase distributed along the grain boundary. The volume fraction of σ and γ phases increased with increasing tempering temperature in the range of 720 to 780 oC, whereas the volume fraction of α phase showed the opposite trend. When the percentage of σ phase increased, the hardness of steel also increased. In the solution treated steel, hardness was measured to be only 244.0 HB, because σ phase did not appear. However, itincreased to 391.8 HB when the DSS was tempered at 780 oC because a great of deal of σ phase appeared. The impact toughness and corrosion resistance of DSS decreased when the percentage of σ phase increased.
