Ferroelectric domain walls differ from domains not only in their crystalline and discrete symmetry, but also in their electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties. Although domain walls provide a degree of freedom to regulate the physical properties at the nanoscale, the relatively lower controllability prevents their practical applications in nano-devices. In this work, with the advantages of 3D domain configuration detection based on piezoresponse force microscopy, we find that the mobility of three types of domain walls(tail-to-tail, head-to-tail, head-to-head) in(001) BiFeO3films varies with the applied electrical field. Under low voltages, head-to-tail domain walls are more mobile than other domain walls, while, under high voltages, tail-to-tail domain walls become rather active and possess relatively long average lengths. This is due to the high nucleation energy and relatively low growth energy for charged domain walls. Finally, we demonstrate the manipulation of domain walls through successive electric writings, resulting in well-aligned conduction paths as designed, paving the way for their application in advanced spintronic, memory and communication nano-devices.

Mechanical lithotripsy(ML) is usually considered as a standard treatment option for large bile duct ***,it is impossible to retrieve oversized stones because the conventional lithotripsy basket may not be able to grasp the ***,there is no established endoscopic extraction method for such giant stone *** describe a case of successful extraction of a 4-cm large stone using a gastric bezoar basket.A 78-year-old woman had suffered from upper abdominal pain for 20 ***-enhanced computed tomogram revealed a 4-cm single stone in the distal common bile duct(CBD).Endoscopic stone retraction was decided upon and endoscopic papillary balloon dilation was performed using a large *** attempt to capture the stone using a standard lithotripsy basket failed due to the large stone ***,we used a gastric bezoar basket to successfully capturethe *** stone was fragmented into small pieces and *** stone was completely removed after two sessions of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography;each of which took 30 *** complications occurred during or after the *** patient was fully recovered and discharged on day 11 of *** using a gastric bezoar basket is a safe and effective retrieval method in select cases,and is considered as an alternative nonoperative option for the management of difficult CBD stones.

Double layered self-expanding metal stents for malignant esophageal obstruction, especially across the gastroesophageal junction

AIM: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of double-layered self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) for treatment of malignant esophageal obstruction according to whether SEMS crosses the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ). METHODS: Forty eight patients who underwent the SEMS insertion for malignant esophageal obstruction were enrolled. Patients were classified as GEJ group (SEMS across GEJ, 18 patients) and non-GEJ group (SEMS above GEJ, 30 patients) according to SEMS position. Double layered (outer uncovered and inner covered stent) esophageal stents were placed. RESULTS: The SEMS insertion and the clinical improvement were achieved in all patients in both groups. Stent malfunction occurred in seven patients in the GEJ group and nine patients in the non-GEJ group. Tumor overgrowth occurred in five and eight patients, respectively, food impaction occurred in one patient in each group, and stent migration occurred in one and no patient, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups. Reflux esophagitis occurred more frequently in the GEJ group (eight vs five patients, P = 0.036) and was controlled by proton pump inhibitor. Aspiration pneumonia occurred in zero and five patients, respectively, and tracheoesophageal fistula occurred in zero and two patients, respectively. CONCLUSION: Double-layered SEMS are a feasible and effective treatment when placed across the GEJ for malignant esophageal obstruction. Double-layered SEMS provide acceptable complications, especially migration, although reflux esophagitis is more common in the GEJ group.

Development of PLGA micro-and nanorods with high capacity of surface ligand conjugation for enhanced targeted delivery

Sequence-related amplified polymorphism（SRAP） is a novel molecular marker technique designed to amplify open reading frames（ORFs） . Here,for the first time,SRAP was used to identify mulberry germplasm. Twenty-three mulberry accessions were screened using SRAP techniques,with 12 primer combinations selected for their reproducibility and polymorphism. Out of 83 PCR fragments scored,59（71.1%） were polymorphic,with an average of 4.9 polymorphic bands and 6.9 bands per primer combination. Mean gene diversity and PIC were 0.1611 and 0.1353,respectively. The genetic similarity coefficient ranged from 0.6905 to 0.9524,with an average of 0.8330. The phylogenetic tree was obtained using the UPGMA method using the total number of amplified SRAP fragments. The results from cluster analysis were in general agreement with our morphologic classification.

Particle shape has been recognized as one of the key properties of nanoparticles in biomedical applications including targeted drug *** ability of shape-engineered particles depends largely on targeting ligands conjugated on the particle ***,poor capacity for surface ligand conjugation remains a problem in anisotropic nanoparticles made with biodegradable polymers such as *** this study,we prepared anisotropic PLGA nanoparticles with abundant conjugatable surface functional groups by a film stretching-based fabrication method with poly(ethylene-alt-maleic acid)(PEMA).Scanning electron microscopy images showed that microrods and nanorods were successfully fabricated by the PEMA-based film stretching *** presence of surface carboxylic acid groups was confirmed by confocal microscopy and zeta potential *** the improved film-stretching method,the amount of protein conjugated to the surface of nanorods was increased ***-conjugated,nanorods fabricated by the improved method exhibited higher binding and internalization than unmodified ***,the PEMA-based film-stretching system presented in this study would be a promising fabrication method for non-spherical biodegradable polymeric micro-and nanoparticles with high capacity of surface modifications for enhanced targeted delivery.

AIM To clarify the prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection(OBI) and the association between OBI and liver disease progression, defined as development of liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), worsening of Child-Pugh class, or mortality in cases of chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection. METHODS This prospective cohort study enrolled 174 patients with chronic HCV infection(chronic hepatitis, n = 83; cirrhosis, n = 47; HCC, n = 44), and evaluated disease progression during a mean follow-up of 38.7 mo. OBI was defined as HBV DNA positivity in 2 or moredifferent viral genomic regions by nested polymerase chain reaction using 4 sets of primers in the S, C, P and X open reading frame of the HBV genome. RESULTS The overall OBI prevalence in chronic HCV patients at enrollment was 18.4%, with 16.9%, 25.5% and 13.6% in the chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis and HCC groups, respectively(P = 0.845). During follow-up, 52 patients showed disease progression, which was independently associated with aspartate aminotransferase > 40 IU/L, Child-Pugh score and sustained virologic response(SVR), but not with OBI positivity. In 136 patients who were not in the SVR state during the study period, OBI positivity was associated with neither disease progression, nor HCC development. CONCLUSION The prevalence of OBI in chronic HCV patients was 18.4%, and OBI was not associated with disease progression in South Koreans.
