Do brood parasitic Common Cuckoos develop brood patches during the breeding season?

Many birds develop brood patches on their ventral apterium under hormonal regulation to effectively transmit body heat to eggs during *** developed patch has several characteristics,including de-feathering,vascularization,and ***,little is known about whether avian brood parasites that do not incubate their eggs exhibit brood patch development during the breeding *** this study,we measured the size of the ventral apterium in 114 Common Cuckoos(Cuculus canorus)captured in the field throughout the breeding season and examined the appearance of the ventral apterium to confirm the development of brood *** also examined whether morphological traits and various factors correlated with the size of the ventral apterium(sternal apterium and abdominal apterium)and how it changed during the breeding *** found no clear signs of brood patch development in Common Cuckoos captured throughout the breeding season,indicating that they likely did not develop brood patches on the ventral apterium during this *** also found that ventral apterium size was positively correlated with wing length and body *** addition,Common Cuckoos with newly growing feathers on the boundary of the ventral apterium with pteryla were frequently observed as seasons progressed to the *** conclusion,Common Cuckoos exhibit neither brood patch development nor the vestigial characteristics of ancestral brood patches,except for the growth of feathers on boundary the ventral *** studies examining brood patches across different groups of avian brood parasites are valuable for enhancing our understanding of the developmental and physiological adaptations of avian brood parasites.

A Study on the Influences of the COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Treatment-Crisis on Quality of Life in Cancer Patients - A Secondary Publication

Objective:To investigate the factors affecting the quality of life of cancer patients by examining the degree of the COVID-19 pandemic-related depression,anxiety,stress,and treatment ***:Data were collected from 132 cancer patients undergoing surgery,chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and hormone therapy at K University Hospital in D City using a structured *** period of data collection was from May 6 to May 28,*** collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,t-test,ANOVA,Pearson’s correlation,and stepwise multiple ***:The mean scores of quality-of-life,depression,anxiety,stress,and treatment crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic were 84.64±29.09,15.14±6.49,4.66±5.27,75.83±17.70,and 78.52±19.95,*** terms of factors affecting the quality of life related to the COVID-19 pandemic,COVID-19 pandemic-related stress(β=0.41,P<0.001)appeared to have the greatest impact,followed by COVID-19 pandemic-related treatment-crisis(β=0.28,P=0.002),anxiety(β=0.21,P=0.002),and gender(β=0.14,P=0.009),with a total explanatory power of 67.6%.Conclusion:To improve the quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic,COVID-19 pandemic-related stress,treatment-crisis,and anxiety should be periodically monitored and nursing interventions such as education on infection prevention,management,and emotional support programs should be provided to decrease the COVID-19 pandemic-related stress,treatment-crisis,and anxiety.

Contrast evaluation methods for natural color images in display systems: within- and cross-content evaluations

Contrast evaluation can be used as a criterion to evaluate performance of contrast enhancement algorithms and to compare contrast capability of display systems. This paper deals with contrast evaluation models for natural color images. Two separate models are defined for within- and cross-content evaluations. The former is to differentiate the perceived contrast of the images with the same content. The latter is to discriminate the differences in contrast among the images with different contents. Perception mechanisms are quite different for within- and cross-content evaluations. Local contrast plays an important role in within-content evaluation. In contrast, global contrast dominates the contrast perception for cross-content evaluation. Results of human visual experiments show that the proposed evaluation models outperform previous methods for both within- and cross-content evaluations.

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells （BMSCs） have been shown to promote the regeneration of injured peripheral nerves. Pulsed electromagnetic field （PEMF） reportedly promotes the proliferation and neuronal differentiation of BMSCs. Low-frequency PEMF can induce the neuronal differentiation of BMSCs in the absence of nerve growth factors. This study was designed to investigate the effects of low-frequency PEMF pretreatment on the proliferation and function of BMSCs and the effects of low-frequency PEMF pre-treated BMSCs on the regeneration of injured peripheral nerve using in vitro and in vivo *** in vitro experiments, quantitative DNA analysis was performed to determine the proliferation of BMSCs, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect S100 （Schwann cell marker）, glial fibrillary acidic protein （astrocyte marker）, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor （neurotrophic factors） mRNA expression. In the in vivo experiments, rat models of crush-injured mental nerve established using clamp method were randomly injected with low-frequency PEMF pretreated BMSCs, unpretreated BMSCs or PBS at the injury site （1 × 106 cells）. DiI-labeled BMSCs injected at the injury site were counted under the fluorescence microscope to determine cell survival. One or two weeks after cell injection, functional recovery of the injured nerve was assessed using the sensory test with von Frey filaments. Two weeks after cell injection, axonal regeneration was evaluated using histomorphometric analysis and retrograde labeling of trigeminal ganglion neurons. In vitro experiment results revealed that low-frequency PEMF pretreated BMSCs proliferated faster and had greater mRNA expression of growth factors than unpretreated BMSCs. Dear Editor, The LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN （LBD）/ ASYMMETRICLEAVES2-LIKE （ASL） genes （hereafter referred to as LBD） encode proteins containing a conserved plant-specific LOB domain and play roles in lateral organ development （Iwakawa et al., 2002; Shuai et al., 2002; Majer and Hochholdinger, 2011）. The LOB domain is approximately 100 amino acids in length and contains a conserved four-Cys motif （CX2CX6CX3C）, the Gly-Ala-Ser block （GAS）, and the leucine-zipper-like coiled-coil motif （LX6LX3LX6L）（Shuai et al., 2002）. The leucine-zipper-like coiled-coil motif in the LOB domain is predicted to function in protein dimerization. LOB, AS2, and LBD4 preferentially bind unique DNA sequences in electrophoretic mobility shift assays （EMSAs）（Husbands et al., 2007）. Role of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid in broiler chickens raised under high stocking density

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA)in broiler chickens raised in high stocking density(HSD)on performance and physiological responses.A total of 900 male broiler chicks(Ross 308)at 1 d old were assigned in a 2×2 factorial arrangement to 4 treatments(10 replicates per treatment)with stocking density,7.5 birds/m^2(low stocking density;LSD)or 15 birds/m^2(HSD),and dietary GABA,0 or 100 mg/*** raised in HSD exhibited a decrease in body weight gain in all phases(P<0.05)and feed intake in starter and whole phases(P<0.01),and an increase in feed conversion ratio in the finisher phase(P<0.01)compared with LSD-raised ***,dietary GABA did not affect growth performance nor interacted with stocking density on production *** HSD *** increased relative liver weight on d 35 whereas dietary GABA increased relative liver weight and decreased relative bursa weight on d *** stocking density and dietary GABA affected yield and quality of breast and leg *** GABA increased(P<0.05)width of tibia on d 35 and interacted(P=0.054)with stocking density on breaking stocking density on d *** HSD *** group lowered(P<0.05)feather coverage *** interaction between stocking density and GABA on surface temperature of shank on d 21 was noted(P=0.024).Dietary GABA exhibited an opposite effect on the concentrations of cecal short-chain fatty acids depending on stocking density leading to a moderate to significant *** density decreased alpha-1-acid glycoprotein whereas dietary GABA decreased heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and corticosterone in blood or serum *** biochemical parameters were altered by stocking density or dietary *** is concluded that dietary GABA alleviated stress indices including corticosterone and heterophilto-lymphocyte ratio,but failed to reverse stocking density-induced growth depression.

Role of oxygen free radicals in patients with acute pancreatitis

AIM:The generation of oxygen free radicals has been implicated in the pathogenesis of experimental pancreatitis. The aim of this study was to determine the role of oxygen free radicals in patients with acute pancreatitis. METHODS:The plasma levels of C-reactive protein(CRP), lipid peroxide(LPO),myeloperoxidase(MPO)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)were measured in 13 patients with acute pancreatitis and 14 healthy volunteers. RESULTS:Among the patients with acute pancreatitis,there were higher plasma levels of LPO and MPO and lower SOD activity in patients with severe pancreatitis than in those with mild ***,there was no significant difference in the serum marker of oxidative stress no matter what the etiology *** LPO level was especially correlated with the concentration of serum CRP and CT severity index. CONCLUSION:The oxygen free radicals may be closely associated with inflammatory process and the severity of acute ***,the concentration of plasma LPO is a meaningful index for determining the severity of the disease.

Effect of change of sand properties on travel distance of ricocheted debris

The debris from exploded buildings can ricochet after colliding with the ground,thus increasing the debris travel distance and danger from any associated impacts or *** reduce this danger,the travel distance of ricocheted debris must be accurately *** study analyzed the change in the travel distance of ricocheted concrete debris relative to changes in the properties of a sand *** shear tests were conducted to measure the change in internal friction angle as a function of temperature and water content of the *** element analysis(FEA)was then applied to these variables to predict the speed and angle of the debris after *** FEA results were compared with results of low-speed ricochet experiments,which employed variable temperature and water *** travel distance of the debris was calculated using MATLAB,via trajectory equations considering the drag *** the internal friction angle decreased,the shear stress decreased,leading to deeper penetration of the debris into the *** the loss of kinetic energy increased,the velocity and travel distance of the ricocheted debris *** in the ricochet velocity and travel distance of the debris,according to changes in the internal friction angle,indicated that the debris was affected by the environment.
