To screen for new sources of salinity tolerance, 688 traditional rice varieties from the Philippines and Bangladesh were obtained, and their tolerance to hypersaline conditions at the seedling stage was examined. A total of 29 Philippine lines and 15 Bangladeshi lines were scored as *** assessment(plant height, biomass and Na-K ratio) revealed that among the 44 salt-tolerant accessions, Casibon, Kalagnon and Ikogan had significantly higher relative shoot length difference, relative shoot growth reduction and shoot Na-K ratio than the tolerant check ***, AC and Akundo exhibited significantly higher Na-K ratios than the other genotypes. The genetic diversity of the 44 genotypes was assessed using 34 simple sequence repeat markers. A total of 133 alleles were detected across all loci. Cluster analysis showed that AC, Akundo and Kuplod were clustered along with FL478, indicating a strong genetic relatedness between these genotypes. IR29(susceptible check) was singly separated. The haplotype analysis revealed that none of the 44 genotypes had a similar allele combination as FL478. These accessions are of interest since each genotype might be different from the classical salinity-tolerant Pokkali.

This study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with xylanase and protease on growth performance,digesta viscosity,apparent ileal digestibility(AID) of nutrients,and gut health in nursery ***-eight pigs(24 barrows and 24 gilts at 21 d of age with 7.2±0.4 kg BW) were randomly allotted to 4 dietary treatments(2 x 2 factorial arrangement) in a randomized complete block design and fed in 2 phases(phase 1 for 10 d and phase 2 for 14 d).Factors were xylanase(0 or45,000 XU/kg) and protease(0 or 300,000 U/kg).Feed intake and BW gain were measured on d 10 *** dioxide(0.25%) was added to all diets as an indigestible external marker from d 20 to *** d 24,all pigs were euthanized to obtain jejunal and ileal digesta to measure viscosity and apparent ileal *** jejunal mucosa was collected to measure immune and oxidative stress *** tissues were used to measure morphology and crypt cells *** phase 2,xylanase increased(P <0.05) the average daily gain(ADG) which was further increased(P <0.05) when combined with ***,combinational use of xylanase and protease increased(P <0.05) ADG compared with the use of xylanase or protease alone,whereas protease improved(P <0.05) feed *** jejunum,xylanase reduced(P <0.05) viscosity of digesta,mucosal malondialdehyde(MDA),crypt depth and crypt cells proliferation,and protease increased(P <0.05) villus height,and decreased(P <0.05) crypt depth and crypt cells ***,xylanase improved growth performance,digesta viscosity,and oxidative stress,whereas protease improved feed efficiency and gut *** combinational use of xylanase and protease enhanced growth performance of newly weaned pigs.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of antral exfoliative cytology method in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)infection in the ***: Fifty patients were submitted to upper digestivetract endoscopy due to complaints of dyspepsia. Thematerial for exfoliative cytology was obtained by extensive brushing of the gastric antral mucosa and Papanicolaou stain was used to identify the bacteria. The authors also performed gastric biopsies to collect material for urease tests and histologic studies, with hematoxylin-eosin and fucsin stains in order to identify the microorganism. The gold standard used to detect the presence of H pylori was an analysis of the combined results from the gastric biopsies by urease test and histological method. RESULTS: Antral exfoliative cytology method exhibited 90.3% sensitivity, 66.6% specificity, accuracy of 81.6%, positive predictive value of 82.3% and negative predictive value of 80.0%, in this population with a prevalence of 63.3%.CONCLUSION: Antral exfoliative cytology was demonstrated to be a sensitive, accurate and easy to perform method for investigating H pylori infection in the stomach.

METHODS:A 47-year-old male with an excellent clinical status and a previous cholecystectomy and an exploratory laparotomy for advanced gastric cancer was referred with obstructive jaundice.A preoperative CT scan showed a dilated bile duct and a small mass at the distal hepatic *** other signs of metastasis were found.A surgical bilioenteric anastomosis was *** surgery,a distal choledochal obstruction and a mesenteric retraction by a lymph node mass prevented the jejunum to ascend for a bilioenteric anastomosis. Surgically,an alternative bilioenteric bypass was performed by means of an ileal loop interposition between the bile duct and the jejunum. RESULT:The recovery of the patient was uneventful and his bilirubin levels normalized after one *** patient was then referred for systemic chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS:This alternative biliary bypass can be safely and easily performed,and may be a good alternative for patients already referred for surgery because of a better life expectancy and when the jejunum is not an alternative.

AIM:To compare the performance of different types of abdominal drains used in bariatric ***:A vertical banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was performed in 33 morbidly obese *** of the peritoneal cavity was performed in each case using three different types of drain selected in a randomized manner:a latex tubular drain,a Watterman tubulolaminar drain,and a silicone channeled *** permeability,contamination of the drained fluid,ease of handling,and patient discomfort were evaluated postoperatively over a period of 7 ***:The patients with the silicone channeled drain had larger volumes of drainage compared to patients with tubular and tubulolaminar drains between the third and seventh postoperative *** addition,a lower incidence of discomfort and of contamination with bacteria of a more pathogenic profile was observed in the patients with the silicone channeled ***:The silicone channeled drain was more comfortable and had less chance of occlusion,which is important in the detection of delayed dehiscence.

AIM: To investigate whether Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection is associated with hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection, presence of enteroparasites, and other surrogates of fecal exposure. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 121 children consecutively admitted at a pediatric hospital in Salvador, Brazil. H pyloriand HAV infection were identified by the presence of serum antibodies. Stool specimens were examined for the presence of ova and parasites. A structured questionnaire inquiring about sanitary conditions and life style was applied to each subject. RESULTS: Fifty-one of the 121 children (42.1%) were found to be seropositive for H pylori, and 45 (37.2%) for HAV. The seroprevalence of Hpyloriand HAV both increased significantly with age. Cross-tabulation of data showed that 26 (21.5%) were seropositive and 51 (42.1%) were negative for both H py/lriand HAV antibodies (x^2=7.18, OR=2.8, CI 1.30-5.97). The age adjusted OR for an HAV-infected child being H pylori positive was 2.3 (CI 1.02-5.03). The agreement between H pylori and HAV seropositivity was fair (k=0.24). After controlling for possible confounding, the variables remaining independently associated with seropositivity to H pylori were age, presence of Giardia lamblia in feces (OR=3.2, 95%CI, 1.1-9.5) and poor garbage disposal quality (OR=2.4, 95%CI, 1.1-5.1). CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that H pylori infection is associated with surrogate markers of fecal exposure. Thus, we conclude that the fecal-oral route is relevant in the transmission of HP among children in an urban setting of a developing country. The association observed between G. lamblia and H pylori infection may have several explanations. Further studies to investigate this relationship are warranted.
