The role of human rhinovirus in immunology, COPD, and corresponding treatments

The common cold is most often a result of human rhinovirus （HRV） infection. Common cold symptoms including rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction frequently occur during HRV infection of the upper respiratory tract. Conversely, HRV may also infect the epithelial cells of the lower respiratory tract. Symptom severity associated with HRV infection ranges from mild to potentially serious depending on a person＇s susceptibility and preexisting condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. An over active host immune response is believed to be the primary contributor to HRV pathogenesis. Enhanced activity of various host cell cytokines and granulocytes mediate specific cellular pathways inducing many of the symptoms associated with HRV infection. There are over 100 serotypes of HRV which can be further categorized based on the specific characteristics of each type. The two main categories of HRV consist of the maj.r and minor groups. The unique host cell receptor is the distinguishing factor between these two groups. Yet, these viruses may also differ in mechanism of infection and replication. Due to the high frequency of hospital and clinical visits and the corresponding economic burden, novel therapies are of interest. Several different treatment options varying from herbal remedies to anti-viral drugs have been studied. However, the vast number of HRV serotypes complicates the progress of developing a universal treatment for attenuating HRV infection.

Ischemic and hypoxic preconditioning protect cardiac muscles via intracellular ROS signaling

Oxidative stress can cause extensive damage to cardiac tissue under reperfusion conditions. However, preconditioning the myocardium may diminish these negative effects and alleviate reperfusion inj.ry. There are a variety of preconditioning therapies, such as ischemic preconditioning （IPC） and hypoxie preconditioning （HPC）, each targeting specific channels, receptors, and/or intracellular molecules. Ischemic preconditioning involves brief periods of ischemia followed by brief periods of reperfusion, thus strengthening the cardiac resistance for a longer period of ischemia. IPC involves complex mechanisms, some of which are still not completely understood today. Nevertheless, many studies have already established models of IPC. In addition, similar to IPC, HPC has also been recognized as preventing reperfusion inj.ry. Reactive oxygen species （ROS） are known mediators of IPC and HPC. Particularly, mitochondria-generated ROS initiate activity of several beneficial preconditioning pathways. The role of ROS is paradoxical; low levels of ROS are key factors in signaling IPC/HPC, but high levels of ROS can contribute to increased oxidative stress on cardiomyocytes. Therefore, it is important to determine the molecular mechanism of IPC and HPC to avoid excessive accumulation of ROS to prevent cardiac inj.ry. In this review, we will outline IPC and HPC, explaining the putative role of ROS in both pathways. We will also discuss preconditioning efficacy in certain conditions such as exercise and how the aging myocardium responds to preconditioning therapies.

When early explorers first crossed the Platte River in what is now Nebraska (USA), it was said the river was “a mile wide and an inch deep”(Mokler, 1923;Smith, 1971). This phrase was used to describe not only the difficulty in crossing the river but also in navigating its length. The trouble with a river being too wide is the risk that it won’t provide the depth necessary to be useful. The same thing can be said of multidisciplinary scientific j.urnals. While a j.urnal can claim to be multidisciplinary, there is a risk of it being so broad that its articles can only engage the reader at a superficial level. Nothing could be further from the truth with Geoscience Frontiers. Over the past ten years, this j.urnal has successfully navigated the wide breadth of geoscience while providing a level of depth and detail that rivals discipline-specific j.urnals.

Transcriptional Control of SET DOMAIN GROUP 8 and CAROTENOID ISOMERASE during Arabidopsis Development

Carotenoids are pigments required for photosynthesis, photoprotection and the production of carotenoid- derived hormones such as ABA and strigolactones. The carotenoid biosynthetic pathway bifurcates after lycopene to produce epsilon- and beta-carotenoids and this branch is critical for determining carotenoid composition. Here, we show how the branch point can be regulated by the chromatin-modifying histone methyltransferase, Set Domain Group 8 （SDG8） targeting the carotenoid isomerase （CRTISO）. SDG8 is required to maintain permissive expression of CRTISO during seedling development, in leaves, shoot apex, and some floral organs. The CRTISO and SDG8 promoters show overlapping tissue-specific patterns of reporter gene activity. Interestingly, CRTISO showed atypical reporter gene expression in terms of greater variability between different lines compared to the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus 35S promoter （CaMV35s） and ~LCY promoters, potentially due to chromosomal position effects. Regulation of the CRTISO promoter was dependent in part upon the presence or absence of SDG8. Knockouts of SDG8 （carotenoid and chloroplast regulation （ccrl）） and CRTISO （ccr2） result in altered carotenoid composition and this could be restored in ccr2 using the CaMV35s or CRTISO promoters. In contrast, varying degrees of GUS expression and carotenoid complementation by CRTISO overexpression using CaMV35S or CRTISO promoters in the ccrl background demonstrated that both the CRTISO promoter and open reading frame are necessary for SDG8-mediated expression of CRTISO.

Characterization of coal using electron spin resonance： implications for the formation of inertinite macerals in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa

Coal contains a significant concentration of free radicals as a result of the coalification process. One of the experimental methods sensitive to the presence of radicals is electron spin resonance （ESR）, and differences in ESR spectra for different macerals may provide insight into coal-forming processes. In this study, ESR data along with the H/C atomic ratio （to infer the aromatic fraction） are used to characterize coal samples with the aim of assessing a fire-origin for dominant inertinite macerals. A medium rank C bituminous Witbank No. 4 Seam Upper coal （the parent） was density- fractionated to create vitrinite-rich and inertinite-rich samples. The parent sample consists of 42 vol% vitrinite and 49 vol% inertinite. The density-fractionated samples comprise of 81 vol% total vitrinite （dominated by collotelinite and collodetrinite）, and 63 vol% total inertinite （dominated by fusinite, semifusinite, and inertodetrinite）. The H/C ratio is 0.74 for the inertinite-rich sample, and 0.85 for the vitrinite-rich counterpart, suggesting the former sample is more aromatic. The ESR spectra obtained for the three samples were found to fit best using a Lorentzian distribution. The fit is noticeably better for the aromatic inertinite-rich sample, for which the spectrum is symmetric. This is attributed to pronounced electron mobility and exchange interactions. The higher radical content of the inertinite-rich and parent samples is attributed to the presence of specific inertinite macerals, namely： fusinite, semifusinite, and inertodetrinite. And, owing to the greater radical content of the inertinite-rich sample, the dominant inertinite macerals are interpreted to have formed through charring of plant matter.

Optimal and interactive keyframe selection for motion capture

Motion capture is increasingly used in games and movies, but often requires editing before it can be used, for many reasons. The motion may need to be adj.sted to correctly interact with virtual obj.cts or to fix problems that result from mapping the motion to a character of a different size or, beyond such technical requirements, directors can request stylistic ***, editing is laborious because of the lowlevel representation of the data. While existing motion editing methods accomplish modest changes, larger edits can require the artist to "re-animate" the motion by manually selecting a subset of the frames as *** this paper, we automatically find sets of frames to serve as keyframes for editing the motion. We formulate the problem of selecting an optimal set of keyframes as a shortest-path problem, and solve it efficiently using dynamic programming. We create a new simplified animation by interpolating the found keyframes using a naive curve fitting technique. Our algorithm can simplify motion capture to around 10% of the original number of frames while retaining most of its detail. By simplifying animation with our algorithm, we realize a new approach to motion editing and stylization founded on the timetested keyframe interface. We present results that show our algorithm outperforms both research algorithms and a leading commercial tool.

Geochronological constraints on the metamorphic sole of the Semail ophiolite in the United Arab Emirates

The Semail ophiolite of Oman and the United Arab Emirates （UAE） provides the best preserved large slice of oceanic lithosphere exposed on the continental crust, and offers unique opportunities to study processes of ocean crust formation, subduction initiation and obduction. Metamorphic rocks exposed in the eastern UAE have traditionally been interpreted as a metamorphic sole to the Semail ophiolite. However, there has been some debate over the possibility that the exposures contain components of older Arabian continental crust. To help answer this question, presented here are new zircon and futile U-Pb geochronological data from various units of the metamorphic rocks. Zircon was absent in most samples. Those that yielded zircon and futile provide dominant single age populations that are 95-93 Ma, partially overlapping with the known age of oceanic crust formation （96.5-94.5 Ma）, and partially overlapping with cooling ages of the metamorphic rocks （95 90 Ma）. The data are interpreted as dating high-grade metamorphism during subduction burial of the sediments into hot mantle lithosphere, and rapid cooling during their subsequent exhumation. A few discordant zircon ages, interpreted as late Neoproterozoic and younger, represent minor detrital input from the continent. No evidence is found in favour of the existence of older Arabian continental crust within the metamorphic rocks of the UAE.
